Lesson 4.6: FunctionsAnother way to determine whether a relation is

Function Notation – another way to evaluate an expression.f(x) “f of x”

The f is just the name of the function. It is not a variable that is multiplied by x.Example 3: If f(x) = 2x – 1, find f(4)

Substitute x = 4, then simplify.

Page 5: November 15, 2012 Function notation

PracticeIf f(x) = -2x + 5 and g(x) = x2 – 8, find each value.

1. f(-4) 2. f(8)

3. g(8) 4. g(-5)

5. f(x + 3) 6. g(2) + 3
