November14,2017TO: HSSEASFacultyExecutiveCommittee FROM: JeffEldredge,Professor Mechanical&AerospaceEngineering RichardWirz,AssociateProfessor Mechanical&AerospaceEngineering MitchellSpearrin,AssistantProfessor Mechanical&AerospaceEngineeringRE: ChangestotheRequirementsforB.S.inAerospaceEngineeringTheMechanical&AerospaceEngineeringDepartmentproposestochangetherequirementstoreceiveaB.S.inAerospaceEngineering.ThechangedcurriculumwasapprovedunanimouslybytheMAEfaculty.Weproposethatthenewcurriculumplanandrequirementswillapplytostudentsstartingtheirthirdyearin2018-19.Thecurrentrequirementsconsistof183units—arelativelylargenumber—andinvolveacumbersomesequenceofsixclassesthatofferlittleleewayforastudentwhofallsofftrackorseeksamorediversecurriculum.Anothernegativeaspectisthatthecurriculumisslantedmoretowardaeronautics(e.g.aircraftdesign)andonlyoffersastronautics(e.g.spacecraftdesign)coursesaselectives.Butmanystudentsareinclinedmoretowardcareersinthelatter,andtheastronauticscoursesarequitepopular.Surveystakenofseniorsandalumnireflecttheseaspects.ItshouldbenotedthattheABETstandardsonlyrequirethatanaerospaceengineeringprogramprovideknowledgeofeitheraeronauticsorastronautics,alongwithsometopicsfromtheotherarea.Ourproposedcurriculumaddressesalloftheseaspects.Theprincipalchangesintheproposedcurriculumwillbeto• Reducethenumberofrequiredunitsto180• Offertwopossible‘tracks’attheupperdivision:oneinaeronauticsandonein
astronautics.Thesetrackswillconsistoffourcourses,allofwhichalreadyexistand
areofferedyearly.Astudentwillchooseoneofthesetwotracks,butwillberequiredtoapplyoneoftheirtwotechnicalelectivestowardacoursefromthealternatetrack.
• RequirestudentstotakeMAE105DTransportPhenomena(i.e.heattransfer).ThisclassusedtoberequiredforAEmajors(beforetheintroductionofthetechnicalbreadthrequirement),buthassinceonlybeenofferedtoAEmajorsasaclassintheEngineeringScienceTBA.ItisarequiredclassforMEmajors.
• RequirestudentstotakeMAE1UndergraduateSeminar,aone-unitP/NPclassthatiscurrentlyoptional(butisnonethelessverywellattendedbyMAEstudents).
• EliminatetherequirementforMAE154BDesignofAerospaceStructures.• ChangethenameoftherequiredclassMAE166Afrom“AnalysisofFlightStructures”
to“AnalysisofAerospaceStructures”andmakeasmalladjustmentincontent.ThisclassisaprerequisiteforMAE154B,but,withtheeliminationofthisrequirement,MAE166Awillnowserveasastand-alonerequiredclassonthetopic.
