“Give ‘till it hurts? NO!

Give with no strings attached!

We have two wonderful scripture examples in today’s readings that unfold the

possibilities of being generous…with no strings attached. Our Old Testament

widow of Zerephath, is asked by the prophet Elijah for some bread and water for

himself. She tells him that it’s all that she has for son and herself. He tells her to

share the little that she has, and God will reward her. She listens, she shares, and

she has an abundance that will never run out. She shared at Gods request through

the prophet.

Then we have the widow, that Jesus sees paying her temple tax, and whom He

does not speak to. He observes her behavior and points it out to His disciples. She

gave all that she had to the temple, and we do not hear of her receiving any reward

for doing what she did. The implication seems to be that she acted on her belief

that God would take care of her and maybe her neighbors would assist her on His

behalf. What faith she had to make such a presumption. Is Jesus praising her

action or passing judgement on the others who contributed to the Temple from

their abundant resources? Maybe both!

And what does this have to do with all of us? It should give us the opportunity to

consider our own generosity to God, towards one another, and to those most in

need. It should make us consider how we might pattern ourselves on the widow’s

example and Gods generosity. How do reflect generosity in our speech and

actions? Is there anything else that we might do for those in need? In a few weeks

the call for generosity will be upon us as we approach the Christmas Season…yes,

the signs of it are already upon us. Let’s not let generosity be a seasonal

obligation. If it is then it’s with strings attached…we are doing it because it’s

Thanksgiving and the Christmas time. Generosity is what we Christians do.

Generosity is what we Christians live. Generosity is doing God’s work. Be

generous for the right reason.

Agnus Day, Mark 12:38-44

Stewardship Corner Lesson 125

Stewardship at Holy Trinity Catholic Church

Pillars of Stewardship

“Our Vision: To be a welcoming parish committed to serving others.” (from Holy Trinity

Church Master Plan)

You may wonder why the stewardship banners are being displayed in church. They

represent ways we can make stewardship a way of life. HOSPITALITY: we welcome the

least of our brothers and sisters, we welcome Jesus and see the face of Christ in one

another. PRAYER: teaches us to receive the abundant graces from God and improve our

relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. FORMATION: offers an educational

opportunity to learn the stewardship way of life. SERVICE: allows us to serve in one of the

various ministries within our parish.

We’ve turned the calendar to a new month...the month of November where we pause to

give thanks to the Lord for His gifts and talents. It also offers us an opportunity to

consider parish service and share our talents with one another and by doing so, to

celebrate and give thanks to God and use His gifts for His greater glory.

So as you see the photos of ministries in action this week, picture yourself in one...check a

box...give thanks and service.

You Can’t Out Do God’s Generosity”

SANTA IS ARRIVING EARLY TO THE ANGEL TREE AT HOLY TRINITY!!!

This year, we are so delighted to be able to help our students that are being sponsored for Catholic

Education by the PWH/Augustine Foundation of our Diocese. These students come from very needy

families, go to our local Catholic schools, and receive tutoring and guidance. We are hoping that

through your generosity, we will help them have a very Merry Christmas.

On December 8th, the students will be having a gathering to wrap and gather gifts for their parents

and grandparents. Their requests for their families appear on each ornament on our angel tree. We

will be kicking off this campaign at our Thanksgiving Mass and subsequent masses until December

5th. In addition, we will be gathering requests for children through the HUGS organization. Their

needs will also appear on ornaments on our tree. This doesn't give us much time, but you have

always come through so generously, and we are confident we can pull this off.....won't you help us get

this done? Please bring your gifts unwrapped, and leave them at the back of the church for pickup.

Mahalo!

Women’s Correctional Facility. We’ll try to brighten their

Christmas also.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development-CCHD Collection

Please respond to Pope Francis’ call for the World Day of the Poor the weekend of November 18.

Please be generous in the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development-CCHD. In the

US, one in six people lives in poverty. With this collection you support programs that address the

causes of poverty and help vulnerable people across our country struggling to overcome persistent

poverty.

Here in Hawaii CCHD has supported a wide range of projects, working with the most vulnerable,

including HOPE Services Hawaii, Inc., which has been instrumental in responding to the needs of the

homeless and victims from the lava flow on the Big Island. Please remember that 25% of the

collection’s proceeds stay in our diocese to hear and respond to the cry of the poor and some of the

most vulnerable in our own islands.

Please prayerfully consider contributing to the CCHD collection .

A National World War I Remembrance – Bells of Peace

This year our nation is commemorating 100 years since World

War I. The National WWI Commission is encouraging all

churches nationwide to participate in the “Bells of Peace”, a

simple way to honor the 116,516 Americans who died in “The

War to End All Wars.”

On November 10th and 11th, at the end of Mass but before the

closing prayer, our church bells will toll 21 times followed by a

moment of Silence and a prayer for Peace.
