Steps to stay calm while driving a car:1. When you feel you are losing your self-control, take 3 deep breaths before reacting
2. If there is a slow car in front of you, imagine that you are VIP, and the car in front of you is guarding you and paving the way for you.
3. Always start driving early enough, so that you have enough time to arrive without hurrying.
4. Focus on driving. Put your full attention on the driving. Don't let worries or thoughts occupy your mind at this time.
This will keep everyone safer!
Mission Statement: “Create a safer environment for students and families in Cupertino to travel to and from school actively.”
Safe Routes to School: “sustained efforts by parents, schools, community leaders and local, state, and federal governments to improve the health and well-being of children by enabling and encouraging them to walk and bicycle to school.”
We are: an active working group coming together to prioritize campus and adjacent roadway/sidewalk programs in order to make the above happen. This includes infrastructure, enforcement, education, evaluation, and encouragement.
Our meetings are: Venues for SR2S group members (that’s us) to meet, choose projects, and move them along at different school sites, district-wide, or City-wide.

What: Safe Routes Map-Creation Workshop
Who: SR2S Coordinator, school staff, parents, SRO’s, City Traffic Engineer, City GIS Department
Where: Stand-alone event or combined with another school event
When: Whenever is most convenient for your school. We are waiting on attendance boundary maps to be created for non-pilot schools (projected to be finished by January)
Why: Grass-roots approach to finding what routes are best for each school to walk/bike
Result: A suggested-route-to-school map tailored to your school community

Next Steps:1. Review maps with City traffic team2. Create draft route maps and present to Working

What: Bright flags stationed at corners of crosswalks for pedestrians to use when crossing the street
Why: Increases safety and visibility for pedestrians Current Locations: City of Los Gatos, City of Redwood
City, City of Glendale, City of Seattle, etc. Scheduled Cupertino Pilot Locations: McClellan and Linda Vista McClellan and Byrne McClellan and Orange Finch and Phil Tilson and Tantau

Why: 1) To spread awareness about sharing
the road2) Reminders to drive and cycle safely3) Because students are amazing artists!

What: Observations of school drop-off and pick-up followed by a discussion and map-marking with members of the City, schools, and Alta consulting
Why: To help influence future infrastructure changes and attain grant funding. To improve trafficflow and safety around school sites.
Needs: Volunteers! Parents and staff at each school where walk audit is happening

Safe Route Maps Safe Routes to School Maps for every Cupertino school by July 2017 Modeled after Los Altos and Palo Alto Safe Routes Maps Will include safety tips, suggested routes to each school, estimated travel
times for each mode based on distance
Needs: From CUSD: enrollment boundary data from remaining seven schools From Remaining CUSD School Sites: schedule a map-creation station at your
school site (once enrollment boundary data is received) From Remaining FUHSD School Sites: volunteers to help host multiple map
creation stations on-site in order to survey maximum students (Homestead example)
Vision: Integrate bike safety education into class time in Cupertino elementary and middle schools (follow City of Palo Alto’s model)
Program Scope: Formal training at the 3rd, 5th, and 6th
grade levels
Program Resources: All curriculum created and provided to schools by Cupertino SR2S program and presentations provided by Sheriffs Department
Implemented Fall 2016 Pilot: 6th grade education assemblies at all middle schools
Proposed Spring 2017 Pilot: Formal bike/ped. education for all 3rd graders inside the classroom
Details: All 3rd grade students would receive two separate bicycle/pedestrian education presentations by their teacher during class time Total Class Time Needed: Two class periods per school year Presented by: 3rd grade teachers Materials provided by: Cupertino Safe Routes 2 School Program (materials
include powerpoint presentations and teacher guides)
Purpose: To prepare 3rd grade students to walk, bike, and share the road with other users safely and to prepare them for their 6th grade education assemblies
