November Little Sir Message:

The November Luncheon is the last lunch meeting for 2019. I want to thank everyone who helped me fill the Little Sir position throughout the year. The Barbecue would not have happened without all the support from the members. The Program Committee found key people to speak during the luncheons sometimes at the very last minute. The many projects and activi-ties don’t just happen by themselves. The members step up to make Sir 98 a great branch where we have fun and friendship. Thank you to all who volunteered, gave assistance, chaired activities and made it a great year. In the same vein, Bill Warfield heads the Christmas Party Committee and has given us all a long list of things yet to be done. The Big SIR Message for November

Gentlemen: Historically in America, November is a month of giving thanks for our bless-ings. Thanksgiving was made a national holiday by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. Imagine that, Lincoln asked people to look at their blessings during the bloodiest conflagration in American history. Thankfully we are in a very different situation now and this month is a good time to celebrate again our freedoms and our bounty in Ameri-ca.

At the October luncheon we presented Branch 98's highest honor to Len Sampaio for his service to community, Branch 98, friends and with Len, he helped all that he surveyed. Len is a man of great faith who puts that faith into action. We salute you Len and many thanks for blessing us with your presence and your hard work to assist us all.

Luncheon attendance has been dipping and I am not quite sure why. We went to Loree’s Little Shack in Rocklin in October. There were 10 SIR burg-er testers for this outing. We had a great time, however, Loree’s was not so great. The food was tasty but the décor was BAD (a dive) & service was slow. The burgers over all rated 3.97 out of 5.0 stars. Next month is our last burger lunch for the 2019 year & it will be at the Granite Rock Grill located at 5140 Pacific St., Rocklin on November 19. Come join us for a fun time and hopefully some good food. You can RSVP me at [email protected] or just show up.

Great news on bocce ball this month. I've also at-tached two photos as discussed in the copy with cap-tions listed below. Hope this helps.

Branch 98 is the 2019 Regional Bocce Ball Cham-pions!!!!!!!!! After playing against 7 other SIRS branches throughout the summer, Branch 98 made it to the regional fi-nals. On October 10

th we played in Au-

burn against Branch 95 from El Dorado Hills. We WON the regional champion-ship by defeating Branch 95 2 games out of 3. We actually won the first two games so didn’t even have to play the third game. Congratulations to the win-ning team consisting of Sam Kemp, Joe Pellegrini, Joe La Pira and Ramesh Thadani. (see attached photo of Gordon Badovick, acting as the Regional Bocce Ball Coordinator, presenting the traveling trophy to the team).

Branch Bocce Ball Tournament: After the last SIRS luncheon on Octo-ber 9

th, we held the annual branch boc-

ce ball tournament as a fitting close toward the end of the bocce ball sea-son on October 31

st. The weather was

great and the competition was strong. In the end the 1

st place win-

ners were Sam Kemp and Ramesh Thadani and the 2

nd place winners were Joe Pelle-

grini and Steve Cooper. For those who couldn’t participate this year you missed a great tournament. (see attached photo of the branch winners). If you have any questions or interest in bocce ball, please don’t hesitate to contact Gordon Badovick at (916) 773-5504 or [email protected].

Couples Welcome

The Antelope Greens season ending awards luncheon was held on Oct. 18th at Timber’s Restaurant. The Backyard BBQ Buffett was enjoyed by all attendees. Our AG club distributed $433.00 in cash winnings for the season, 10 golf certificates for 18 holes with cart, 15 gift certificates for various restaurants and 7 envelopes with cash for the raffle drawing. In all a total of $1,169.00 was awarded in prize money and gifts to our players. Antelope Greens is well underway on the construction of their new club house, which should be completed by the time we start our 2020 Spring & Summer League. We encourage all our SIR members to watch the Rooster Tale next February & March for news of our starting date and how to sign up to play. Our league is for early risers who want to play at 7:30 a.m. and be done by 11:30 a.m., which leaves time for a nice lunch and a delicious nap in the afternoon. Our winter program continues each Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. on a walk up, sign up, pay and play with groups formed at random. As a courtesy to the course and members, please 15 to 20 minutes prior to tee time. Thanks. Submitted by: Len Sampaio; AG Coordi-nator

Branch 98 Christmas Party

This year’s party is shaping up to be another fun affair. Tickets will be sold at the November luncheon as well as at the golf outing at Sierra View on October 21. If you don’t bring your check book, take a flyer and follow the directions. If you want to reserve a table, 5 couples, or desire to sit with another couple, indicate it some-where on your form and will accommodate you. We need raffle prizes. Now is the time to clean out your liquor cabinet and find a good home with another SIR for that bottle of whiskey or Scotch or whatever that you don’t drink anymore. Gift baskets are always popular. Make one up yourself with some of your favorite things, or just buy one and donate it. A time share weekend that you are not using, tickets to an event or even a special, hosted dinner at your house are suggestions of things which are crowd pleasers. See Don Noyes (Raffle Chairman) at Sierra View and let him know that you are donating. If you are not a golfer, then get with Don at the November luncheon. Volunteers are needed as well. People can help with set up, tear down, selling tickets, stuffing envelopes and generally making sure that everything is done right. Tickets are selling fast so reserve your place now! Food, social time, dancing and an opportunity to win some great gifts should make you want to attend but if that is not enough, then come for the Holiday Celebra-tion with some good friends. There is a lot of buzz about the latest meatless burg-ers. I personally have not eaten a veggie burger that didn’t disappoint. Have you really found one you liked in the past? They have tried with tofu burgers, quinoa burgers, cauliflower, lentil & black bean burgers but none of them tasted like what we love. “So I was interested in trying the new “bleeders”, those plant-based ground meats that bleed on the grill like ground beef does.” Says Jeff Csatari, author for Eat This, Not That” Enter the next generation of meatless burgers. The

Impossible Burger by Impossible Foods is currently

only available in restaurants (over 1,000 across the U.S.)

and now offered by Burger King, White Castle and Red

Robin. Beyond Burger Beyond Meats is available at

Carl’s Jr., and A&W and in some supermarkets like

Walmart, Wholefoods, Target, Amazon, & Publix. So if

you want to eat better you might want to check these

meatless burgers out.

"Well it is that time again-time to pay our Annual Branch Dues for 2020. Annual Dues collections are required from Jan. 1 - March 31 per Branch 98 Rules; however, those wishing to get a jump on their dues payment are welcome to do so stating in November 2019. Several members did pay their 2020 Annu-al Dues during the October luncheon! The Branch annual dues will be held at $25 per member in spite of an announcement by the SIR State organization that Branch Assessments will in-crease in 2020 by $1.00 per Branch member. The BEC is try-ing to hold costs on other Branch activities such that we can absorb this increase within the Branch 98 operating funds. Therefore, please submit your $25 check (made out to SIR Branch 98, with a note that it is for 2020 Dues) or cash, to the Treasurer (Bill Kemper, 3466 Paseo Mira Vista, Lincoln, CA 95648) either by US Mail, or during the luncheons. I recom-mend mailing your checks to the Treasurer as it will minimize the lunch line delays. And, as a reminder, per Branch 98 Rules, all 2020 dues payments are required by March 31, 2020."

An Inspirational Message 6 Ways To Save Your Knees

by Stacey Colino, AARP, September 20, 2019

With the passage of time, a certain amount of wear and tear on your joints is inevitable. But it doesn't have to affect the way your knees feel, function or move. If you experience a clicking or popping sensation in the joint when you walk, bend or lunge, but there's no pain or swelling, you don't need to worry about it, says Dennis Cardone, D.O., an associate professor of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine at NYU Langone Health in New York City. On the other hand, if you have pain or swelling with that clicking or popping, it's best to schedule a visit to your doctor. 1. Maintain a Healthy Weight Toting around excess

weight places tremendous pressure on your knees. “For every pound of weight you put on, the knees will have four more pounds of force on them and even more than that when you go up or down stairs,” says John-Paul Rue, an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore.

2. Keep Moving. Regular physical activity helps maintain joint function, including strength and range of motion in the knees, which “means less force gets applied to the knee.

3. Strengthen the Muscles that Support the Knees. De-veloping strong thigh muscles — especially the quadri-ceps, hamstrings and abductors — improves range of motion, protects knee cartilage and reduces the stress you place on the knee, says Richard Willy, an assistant professor of physical therapy at the University of Mon-tana School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sci-ences. Get in the habit of doing squats and lunges twice a week

4. Perfect your posture. “People often slouch or get more stooped over as they get older,” Cardone says. This is problematic because poor posture changes your body's center of gravity, placing added stress on your knees and hips. So make a point of standing tall, with your head in line with your shoulders, your shoulders directly over your hips, your hips aligned with your knees, and your knees aligned with your feet.

5. Choose the right shoes. Wearing supportive, comforta-ble shoes promotes proper alignment of the joints in your lower extremities as you move, explains Barton Branam, M.D., an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Cincinnati it's a good idea to get profession-ally evaluated and fitted by someone at a top-notch run-ning or sporting goods store, Branam suggests.

6. Listen to your knee pain. If you develop pain and swelling in your knee, take a break from walking, running or any other high-impact activity you're doing. Give your knee the RICE treatment — rest, ice, compression and elevation — and take an anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen, Rue advises, If it doesn't respond in a week or two, have it looked at by a doctor.

The FLU season is here. Be safe, get your flu & pneumonia

shots. Tell your friends.
