Pope John Paul IIA Saint for CanadaFR. THOMAS ROSICA, C.S.B.
An engaging and insightful reflection by one of Canadas leading priests on the Canadian experience of a modern-day saint, Pope John Paul II.
No other pope in history traveled as widely as Pope John Paul II. Although commemorative and memorabilia books abound on his life and travels, few offer such an intimate portrait and reflection from a Canadian perspective of this remarkable papacy. Women and men across Canada were deeply moved by Pope John Paul IIs three visits. His words and witness penetrated the hearts of all, and shaped the Canadian Church for decades to come.
Now from Fr. Thomas Rosica, a man who spent countless hours with the pope and knew him well, comes this remarkable reflection on Pope John Paul IIs visits and teachings to Canadians. Fr. Rosica invites us to deeply ponder the words that Pope John Paul II shared with us and to consider the implications of those teachings for those of us who continue to proclaim the joy and vitality of the Gospel. As we embrace and live out the work of the New Evangelization, Fr. Rosica shows us how Pope John Paul IIs message and witness provide us a guide and way for being the salt of the earth and light of the world.
All women and men, lay and ordained, committed to renewing the Canadian Church will find this book to be of inestimable value and a source for future reflection as we live and work for the New Evangelization.
Fr. Thomas Rosica, C.S.B., serves as Chief Executive Officer of Salt and Light Media Foundation in Toronto, Canada. Ordained a priest in 1986, Fr. Rosica has advanced degrees in theology and scripture. Most notably, he served as the coordinator of World Youth Day 2002 in Toronto and continues to collaborate with the Vaticans Press Office.

Clothed in the Word of GodFR. RMI BOURDON WITH PIERRE GUNETTE
A prayerful and engaging reflection on the lives and witness of Canadian saints, blesseds and venerables.
Canadas history has been shaped, formed and marked by the lives and witness of women and men who sought to live and proclaim the Gospel in all that they did. From the Canadian Martyrs and Kateri Tekakwitha to Andr Bessette and Vasyl Velychkovsky, women and men opened themselves to be clothed and transformed by Gods Word.
Compiled in this one-of-a-kind collection are the stories of the holy men and women listed in the Churchs book of saints, blesseds and venerables. Yet more than a biographical account of outstanding witnesses of faith, this treasury of Canadian saints invites us to reflect on their lives and consider how we may be transformed by Gods calling. Through exercises of meditation, reflection and prayer, we are led to a discovery of our own role in Gods divine plan.
Whether alone or in small groups, women and men of all ages will find these stories to be a source of inspiration and invitation to live the Gospel more fully in our lives and work today.
Fr. Rmi Bourdon is a priest of the Diocese of St-Jean-Longueil, Quebec and serves as the director of catechesis. With an extensive history of pastoral ministry in schools, he is interested in the contribution of various pedagogical approaches to catechesis and sharing of our faith.
Pierre Guenette is a longtime contributor to Novalis publishing, having authored several books in French and articles for Prions en glise, the French-language version of Living with Christ.

The People's Revolution24 Stories from a Scarboro Missionary's JournalFR. CHARLES GERVAIS, S.F.M
A collection of lively and dynamic stories of a Scarboro Missionary, sure to inspire the faith of all Catholics.
More than 50 years ago, Fr. Charles Gervais embarked on a journey to share the Gospel and proclaim the faith to the people of the Philippines. He soon discovered it was the people who would proclaim the faith to him.
Through widely engaging stories, Fr. Gervais recounts his experience as a Scarboro Missionary living and working in the Philippines. Shaped and formed by a Canadian missionary community rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and committed to living in solidarity with the poor, he tells of the long journey to the Philippines, the impact of a Church transformed by the Second Vatican Council and a nation torn by violence and injustice that has left many of its people wounded. Yet it is in the women and men with whom he ministers and serves that Fr. Gervais experiences the stunning witness and joy of faith.
Readers will be moved by the powerful stories he shares. Each account draws us deeper and deeper into his experience, yearning to discover the gift that he received throughout his many years of ministry. Through the lens of one missionary, we realize that true transformation and conversion comes about only in communion with all our brothers and sisters, particularly the least among us.
Fr. Charles Gervais, S.F.M., is a member of the Scarboro Foreign Mission Society, a community of priests and lay people serving women and men in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Over the course of many years of ministry, Fr. Gervais has lived in solidarity with the poor and marginalized in the Philippines and Ecuador.

Together We HealARCHBISHOP SYLVAIN LAVOIE, O.M.I.
A compassionate and resourceful guide for ministers journeying with victims of sexual abuse and violence.
In his nearly forty years as a priest and archbishop, Sylvain Lavoie journeyed with victims of sexual abuse. Particularly in his ministry among the Aboriginal community, and those who suffered greatly in Indian Residential Schools, Lavoie heard first-hand the profound and unfathomable grief and pain that victims experience. Moved by those stories, he sought to create ways for victims of sexual abuse to experience healing and relief from their pain.
Attentive to the uniqueness of each persons story, Lavoie proposes a 12-step healing model focused on forgiveness, healing and moving on. Offering recommendations for pastoral care and creating safe spaces for victims, Lavoie helps ministers facilitate this process and provides a way for victims to experience healing from the tragic abuse that they have experienced.

What God Has Joined: Preparing for Marriage in the Catholic Church
Facilitators' and Couples Guides
DR. MONA-LEE FEEHAN
An interactive and accessible marriage preparation program to help couples grow in understanding of each other and the Churchs teaching.
Deeply grounded in the Churchs sacramental understanding of marriage, What God Has Joined offers couples all the resources they need to grow in understanding of each other and the centrality of faith to their marriage. Written and prepared by Dr. Mona-Lee Feehan, theologian and pastoral minister with an expertise in formation programs for marriage and adult learning and development, the program invites couples to reflect upon the key elements of a healthy relationship as well as the rich and abundant Church teaching on the sacrament of marriage.
Drawing from Scripture and the teachings of Pope John Paul IIs Theology of the Body, this program will empower and assist facilitators in leading couples through marriage preparation. In addition, couples will discover that the engaging, full-colour magazine-style couples guide will ignite their own conversation and reflection on marriage and faith as they continue their journey together.
Mona-Lee Feehan, Ph.D., is a wife and mother of four children. With a doctoral degree from St. Stephens and St. Andrews Theological College in Edmonton, Alberta, she continues to teach at the college and works with marriage preparation programs.

Via LucisThe Way of LightDR. GLENN BYER
A stunning and vivid meditation on the Stations of the Resurrection through word and image.
For several centuries, Christians have traversed the way of Christs passion and death. To this day, Lenten Fridays are marked by communal prayers and devotions in honour of this holy and prayerful tradition. Yet in recent decades, a growing awareness of the significance and equal importance of Christs resurrection has given rise to a prayerful meditation upon the resurrection stories of Jesus. Originally written by Father Sabino Palumbieri, the Via Lucis, or Way of Light, has grown in popularity in the past two decades. Like the Way of the Cross, the Way of Light marks each important story of Jesus resurrection appearances with prayers, scripture readings and reflections.
Presented here for the first time is a uniquely Canadian presentation of the Via Lucis, drawing from powerful images that speak deeply to all Canadians. Combining the rich prayers of the Via Lucis with stunning depictions of light and provocative reflections, we discover the beautiful stories of Jesus appearances to his disciples and their meaning for us today.
Whether used individually or in communal prayer, this prayerful meditation on the Way of Light will be sure to draw all people more fully into the Paschal Mystery and the joy of the new life in Christ.
Dr. Glenn Byer, M.A., S.L.D., serves as Associate Publisher for Novalis. With an extensive history of ministry in parishes, a seminary and the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, Byer seeks to engage women and men more deeply in the public prayer of the Church.

FerialRoman Missal 182; Lectionary 215
Entrance Antiphon(Cf. Jn 1) In the beginning and before all ages, the Word was God and he humbled himself to be born the Saviour of the world.
CollectO God, who through your Son raised up your eternal light for all nations, grant that your peo-ple may come to acknowledge the full splendour of their Re-deemer, that, bathed ever more in his radiance, they may reach everlasting glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Reading (1 John 4.19 5.4)My dear children, we love be-cause he first loved us. Those
who say, I love God, and hate their brothers or sisters are li-ars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sis-ters also. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child.
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his com-mandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his com-mandments are not burden-some, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith.
Gospel (Mark 6.45-52) After feeding the five thousand with the loaves and fish, Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the oth-er side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. After say-ing farewell to them, he went up on the mountain to pray.
When evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and Jesus was alone on the land. When he saw that they were straining at the oars against an adverse wind, he came towards them early in the morning walking on the sea. He intended to pass them by. But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out; for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.
Then Jesus got into the boat with them and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astound-ed, for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.
Prayer over the OfferingsO God, who give us the gift of true prayer and of peace, graciously grant that, through this offering, we may do fitting homage to your divine majesty and, by partaking of the sacred mystery, we may be faithfully united in mind and heart. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Preface (Nativity, p. 10 or Epiphany, p. 11)
Communion Antiphon(1 Jn 1) That life which was with the Father became visi-ble, and has appeared to us.
Prayer after CommunionMay your people, O Lord, whom you guide and sustain in many ways, experience, both now and in the future, the rem-edies which you bestow, that, with the needed solace of things that pass away, they may strive with ever deepened trust for things eternal. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gospel (John 1.35-42)John was standing with two of
his disciples, and as he watched
Jesus walk by, he exclaimed,
Look, here is the Lamb of
God! The two disciples heard
him say this, and they followed
Jesus. When Jesus turned and
saw them following, he said to
them, What are you looking
for? They said to him, Rabbi
(which translated means Teach-

said to them, Come and see.
They came and saw where he
was staying, and they remained
with him that day. It was about
four oclock in the afternoon.
One of the two who heard
John speak and followed him was
Andrew, Simon Peters brother.
He first found his brother Simon
and said to him, We have found
the Messiah (which is translat-
ed Anointed). He brought Simon
to Jesus, who looked at him and
said, You are Simon son of John.
You are to be called Cephas
(which is translated Peter).
Prayer over the OfferingsO God, who give us the gift of
true prayer and of peace, gra-
ciously grant that, through this
offering, we may do fitting hom-

SUNDAY JANUARY 5
Epiphany of the LordIve often pondered whether
the wise men were surprised
by what they found at the end
of their journey. They had left
behind homes and safety and
comfort, spending months fol-
lowing the star. And for what?
To finally meet a mighty king
living in a magnificent palace?
Not even close. Instead, they
found a child lying helpless
in his mothers arms, living in
the humblest of dwellings. Yet
somehow the magi were able to
see beneath the childs poverty
and vulnerability to recognize
the one whom they had sought.
It makes me wonder how
many times God comes to us in
ways that may at first seem un-
expected or even contradictory.
While I certainly expected to
feel Gods presence in the birth
of my child, I had no idea that I
would sense that same presence
when I sat with my mother as
she took her final breaths.
The feast of the Epiphany
challenges us to be seekers as
the wise men were seekers, to
search for God and recognize
Gods presence wherever and
whenever God chooses to re-
veal himself. When we discov-
er one way God is present to
us, wonderful! But we need to
keep looking, always and every-
where, for other ways, too. To-
day we journey forth into the
New Year with the magi as our
guides, always seeking and al-
ways searching for Gods pres-
ence in the unexpected.Teresa Whalen Lux, Regina, SK
