W hen barely fve years old, St. Thomas Aquinaswas given to the Benedictine monastery atMonte Cassino, Italy with his parents hopes thathe would become a monk and later the abboto the said monastery. In 1239 he was sent toNaples to complete his studies.

By 1243, Thomas abandoned his amilysplans or him and joined the Dominicans, muchto his mothers dismay. The Dominicans alongwith the Franciscans were the poorest o thereligious orders at that time. They were beggars, mendicants who to survive had to beg or theirood. That turned o his noble and rich amily. Onthe order o his mother, Thomas was captured byhis brothers and kept at home or over a year.

Once ree, he went to Paris and then toCologne, where he fnished his studies withAlbert the Great. He held two proessorshipsat Paris, lived at the court o Pope Urban IV,directed the Dominican schools at Rome andViterbo. His eloquence made him the most wellknown preacher o his time.

The Summa Theologiae, his last and, unortunately, uncompleted work, deals with thewhole o Catholic theology. He stopped work onit ater celebrating Mass on December 6, 1273.When asked why he stopped writing, he replied,I cannot go on All that I have written seems tome like so much straw compared to what I haveseen and what has been revealed to me. I I cannotimitate you in the brilliance o your studies,I can ollow you in the humility and charitywhich marked your lie. As St. Paul said, charityis the greatest git, and it is open to all.
