News-Herald Office To Relocate in Clearing The Southwest News- Herald newspaper, which is part of the Vondrak Pub- lishing Co. chain that has been located at 6225 S. Kedzie Ave., Chicago, since 1974, will be moving to a new location in the city’s Clearing neighbor- hood. The News-Herald office will now be at 5639 W. 63rd St., Chicago, just down the street from the western edge of Midway Airport. The company is in the process of making the move, which should be completed by Monday, Nov. 28. James Vondrak, one of the current co-publishers of the city and suburban editions of the News-Her- ald and Clear-Ridge Re- porter, said the move was made in an effort to be ac- cessible to more of its readers. “The city edition of the News-Herald covers as far west as Harlem Avenue, as far north as 47th Street, east to Western Avenue and 87th Street south,” said Vondrak. Bob Gusanders, co-pub- lisher and general man- ager, felt that the move brings the current News- Herald closer to its overall readers. “We felt it was necessary to be more centrally lo- cated for our readers in not only the city, but our sub- urban edition as well,” said Gusanders. Vondrak said that the Kedzie location is larger than necessary. The Clear- ing office has two floors and the space for all de- partments is used more ef- ficiently, he added. While the move is the first for the News-Herald in 37 years, readers will notice lit- tle difference in coverage of the city and suburban edi- tions of the News-Herald. The office phone number, (773) 476-4800, will remain the same. The office fax number, (773) 476-7811, also will not change. The city edition of the Southwest News-Herald was first printed on Oct. 10, 1946. The newspaper was cre- ated under the guidance of the late pioneer publishers Ed and Daisy Vondrak, whose son is James. The paper was due to the consolidation of the Gage Park Herald, which the Vondraks purchased previ- ously, and the Southwest News. However, its history actu- ally dates back to 1924 when a paper was created with the flippant banner of Ain’t We Got Fun. The tongue-in-cheek name was given because its creators thought they would never put out another edition. The paper was created over what was deemed a controversial issue at the time: Should ve- hicular traffic be allowed through Marquette Park? Wisdom denotes the pursuing of the best ends by thebest means.

–Francis Hutcheson

The following is dedi-cated to Nance Dulaj, ournews correspondent inWest Lawn:

Not long ago, it seems, atiny child sat in an ele-vated chair confused bythe sights and sounds ofThanksgiving — so manystill unfamiliar faces talk-ing, smiling, laughingaround the table, filled tooverflowing with steam-ing dishes of all colors, shapes and smells. Andthen, suddenly, silence.Heads bow while onevoice speaks softly ofthanks. And the tiny childlooks on in wonder.

Then the child is anadolescent — the familyof faces grown familiarwith time, the steamingdishes, named and clas-sified, the quiet commentrecognized as prayer.

And the adolescentwaits with bowed headfor the serving to begin. Then the adolescent is anadult, parent of the tinychild, who watches wide-eyed from the same ele-vated chair, one or twomembers no longer there.

The traditional menunow is comforting in itsabundance as the lovethat fills the room. Andthe adult hears newmeaning in the Thanks-

giving prayer. Then theadult is a senior, moved tothe head of the table, witha grandchild in the ele-vated chair. As it has eachyear, the harvest of oneseason fills the table. Butas never before, the har-vest of a lifetime sur-rounds it. And the seniorunderstands the prayer ofThanksgiving.

On this ThanksgivingDay, may you and yoursfeel the wonderment ofchildhood, the anticipa-tion of adolescence, therealization of adulthood, and the understanding ofmaturity.

Black Fridaycontinued from page 3

If there isn’t one posted,it should be taken as a redflag that personal infor-mation may be sold toothers without permis-sion.

• Beware of deals thatsound too good to be true.

Offers on Web sites andin unsolicited e-mails mayoften sound too good to betrue, promoting especiallyextremely low prices onhard-to-get items.

Consumers should al-ways go with their in-stincts and not be afraid topass up a “deal” thatmight cost them dearly inthe end.

• Confirm your online

purchase is secure.Shoppers should always

look in the address box forthe “s” in https:// and inthe lower-right corner forthe “lock” symbol beforepaying.

If there are any doubtsabout a site, the BBB rec-ommends right-clickinganywhere on the page andselect “Properties.” Thiswill let you see the realURL (Web site address)and the dialog box will re-veal if the site is not en-crypted.

• Pay with a credit card. It’s best to use a credit

card, because under fed-eral law, the shopper candispute the charges if heor she doesn't receive theitem.

Shoppers also have dis-pute rights if there areunauthorized charges ontheir credit card, andmany card issuers have“zero liability” policiesunder which the cardholder pays nothing if

someone steals the creditcard number and uses it.

• Keep documentation ofyour order.

After completing the on-line order process, theremay be a final confirma-tion page or the shoppermight receive confirma-tion by e-mail.

The BBB recommendssaving a copy of the Webpage and any e-mails forfuture reference and as arecord of the purchase.

* * *Don’t forget those less

fortunate this holiday sea-son.

If deciding to donate anitem to a charity or cause, make sure items are ingood condition and the re-cipient organization ac-cepts such items to helpfurther its cause.

MADD GivesState 5-StarRanking

Illinois has earned amajor award from Moth-ers Against Drunk Driv-ing, five-stars, for thestate’s efforts to combatdrunk driving, said Illi-nois Secretary of StateJesse White.

“I am pleased thatMADD has recognizedIllinois as a nationalleader in the fight againstdrunk driving,” saidWhite.

“My top priority as Sec-retary of State is to makethe roads of Illinois assafe as possible,” Whitesaid.

Under White’s leader-ship, the state BAIID pro-gram requires allfirst-time DUI offenderswho want to obtain driv-ing relief to install this de-vice in their vehicle.

Drivers are required toblow into the device whenentering their vehicles.

There are currently12,000 BAIID devicesbeing used in the state.

MADD’s rating systemfocuses on state’s adopt-ing a series of provendrunk driving counter-measures, such as requir-ing BAIIDs for allconvicted drunk drivers, conducting sobrietycheckpoints and creatingbigger penalties for thosewho drive drunk withchildren in the car.

Healthy Ways To Handle Water Around The House

(NAPSA)-Water is a won-derful thing-except whenyou need to move it or it’swhere you don’t want it.Then it can be heavy, messy, and even hazardous to yourhealth.

For example, an 18-inchfish tank holds seven gallonsof water-which weigh morethan 58 pounds. That’s goingto be tough to lift when it’stime to clean the tank. Con-sider these facts and figures:According to the Occupa-tional Safety and Health Ad-ministration (OSHA), overhalf of all back injuries resultfrom improper lifting, andback injuries are cited as themost common reason for ab-senteeism in the generalworkforce, after the commoncold. Some 80 percent ofadults will experience a backinjury in their lifetime andabout 10 percent will suffer areinjury. While no way hasbeen found to totally elimi-nate back injuries caused bylifting, many of them can beprevented.

For example, rather thanlifting and moving that fishtank you can empty it

Whether you’re cleaning the aquarium or doing manyother water chores, a new device can have you feelingpumped.

quickly and easily with thehelp of a cordless waterpump. You can even get onethat runs on a safe, low-volt-age battery, is fully sub-mersible and can be used onfresh or salt water, likeAquaChargeTM. With arechargeable battery andcharging station, an eight-foot hose (or any standardgarden hose if you needmore length), and a 200-gal-lon-per-charge pump capac-ity, this light, compact pumphandles both maintenance ofhousehold water pumpingtasks and emergency needseasily with the simple turn ofa knob.

Given the portability andcompact nature of theAquaCharge pump, anyonewith a large aquarium, hottub, outdoor water feature ora child’s pool to empty willfind it a big conveniencecompared to the usual“bucket brigade” technique. It can also come in handy ifthe plumbing overflows inyour kitchen, bathroom, basement or laundry roomand you have to undertakethe back-breaking task of

getting that water up off ofthe slippery floor. Even wa-tersport enthusiasts and fish-ermen have to occasionally“swab the deck” and find iteffective in removing waterfrom their kayaks, dinghies, canoes and sailboats.

Taking care of water-mov-ing chores doesn’t have tohurt your back when you’vegot a tool that helps you per-form those tasks more pro-ductively and safely, andtakes handling water aroundthe house from hazardous tohealthy.

No More Important Job Than Being A Father

(NAPSA)-”The smallestmoments can have thebiggest impact on a child’slife.”

That’s the message of newpublic service advertise-ments (PSAs) aimed atAmerica’s dads. Accordingto the U.S. Census Bureau,an estimated 24 millionchildren (34 percent) in theU.S. live apart from theirfathers.

The PSA campaign is aneffort between the U.S. De-partment of Health andHuman Services’ (HHS)Administration for Childrenand Families, Office ofFamily Assistance and theAd Council to show fathersthe irreplaceable role theyplay in their children’slives.

From the time the Re-sponsible Fatherhood cam-paign began three yearsago, the PSAs have fea-tured different segments ofthe population each year.Created pro bono by Camp-bell Ewald (CE), this year’s

The Responsible Father-hood campaign urges dadsto take the lead and sug-gests ways to spend time to-gether. Don’t wait for yourchildren to ask to read abook or go for a walk.

campaign focuses on mili-tary and Hispanic fathers.

“The President has saidthere is no more importantjob he or any other man canhave than being a father,”said Joshua DuBois, specialassistant to the Presidentand Executive Director ofthe White House Office ofFaith-based and Neighbor-hood Partnerships.

According to the NationalResponsible FatherhoodClearinghouse (NRFC),children who live withouttheir biological fathers areon average at least two tothree times more likely toexperience educational, health, emotional and be-havioral problems, to bevictims of child abuse andto engage in criminal be-havior than their peers wholive with their married, bio-logical (or adoptive) par-ents.

Whether they live together

or just see each other occa-sionally, research showsthat kids benefit greatlywhen their fathers are ac-tively involved in theirlives. Spending time to-gether can energize the re-lationship and create astronger bond between a fa-ther and child.

All the PSAs direct fa-thers to visit www.father-hood.gov or call (877)4DAD411 for programs, re-sources and a series of“Take Time Tips.” Here area few:

• Create small momentsthat bring big rewards-Gofor a walk, read a story, cook dinner, play a videogame or board game, colora picture or do a crosswordpuzzle with your child.

• Be a digital dad-Sendyour child a text messagefor no reason at all, otherthan to say, “I love you” or“Great job on the test.”

• Come and get it-Eatmeals with your children.Breakfast, lunch and dinnercreate an opportunity togive your child your full at-tention. Share news aboutyour lives, have discussionsand make plans for yourfamily.

Digging Up Savings With Geothermal

(NAPSA)-Homeownerssearching for ways to savemoney are digging deep-butnot in their pockets, in theiryards. More and more con-sumers are taking advantageof the free, renewable energysource that lies just beneaththe earth’s surface to effi-ciently and economicallyheat and cool their homes.

A geothermal home comfortsystem taps into the abundantsource of free solar energystored in the earth and uses aseries of pipes (an earth loop)buried in the ground to movethat energy into the house.During the cooling cycle, ageothermal heat pump ex-tracts heat from the air insideand moves it to the earthloop. In the heating mode, theheat pump uses the earth loopto extract heat from theground and distribute itthrough the building, using aconventional duct system. The same heat energy canalso be used for a radiantfloor system or domestic hotwater heating.

According to the experts atWaterFurnace, using this freeenergy source can savehomeowners as much as 70percent on their cooling bills. What’s more, the averagesystem life span exceeds 24years-compared to 15 yearsfor a more traditional heatingand cooling system.

During that extended lifespan, the geothermal systemcan provide a host of addi-tional benefits to homeown-ers, including:

• Efficiency ratings up tofive times higher than thoseof traditional heating andcooling systems

• Even distribution of heat-ing and cooling for improved

Many families enjoy savingmoney on heating and cool-ing their homes.

comfort• Improved indoor air qual-

ity• Quiet operation, with no

noisy outdoor units to disturbthe environment or neighbors

• Safe operation that re-quires no open flame or fuelstorage tanks

• Little to no maintenance• A reduced carbon foot-

print, since the system burnsno fossil fuel.

Another plus: - Homeown-ers who install a geothermalsystem before December 31,2016 can take advantage of afederal residential renewableenergy tax credit of 30 per-cent of the total investmentfor the system. Part of theAmerican Recovery andReinvestment Act, this tax in-centive is retroactive to Janu-ary 1, 2009 and can be usedin combination with utilityrebates and state tax incen-tives, where available, tomake geothermal systemsmore affordable than ever.

To find a geothermal systemthat fits your needs, you canvisit www.waterfurnace.comor call (800) GEO-SAVE.

In Kentucky, it is illegal tocarry ice cream in your backpocket. Tips On Managing Good Cholesterol

(NAPSA)-When it comesto managing your choles-terol, low isn’t always thegoal. Higher levels of“good,” or HDL (high-den-sity lipoprotein), cholesterolmay help protect againstheart disease, while havinglow levels (less than 40mg/dL) may increase therisk.

Medical experts think HDLcarries cholesterol awayfrom the arteries and back tothe liver, where it’s passedfrom the body and protectsfrom heart disease. Some ex-perts believe that HDL re-moves excess cholesterolfrom arterial plaque, slowingits buildup.

Dr. Richard Karas, Directorof Preventive Cardiologyand Co-Director of theWomen’s Heart Center atTufts Medical Center, sayswomen in particular need topay attention to HDL levelsas it’s typically 10 pointshigher in women than inmen. Furthermore, low HDLis a more significant risk fac-tor for heart disease thanhigh LDL (“bad”) choles-terol in women.

Although women may notbe diagnosed as aggressivelyas men, more women die ofheart disease each year. Infact, in the U.S., heart dis-ease is the leading cause ofdeath in women and 38.2million women (34 percent)are living with the disease. The population at risk is evenlarger.

Fortunately, even smallchanges to daily habits canhelp both men and womenincrease their HDL. Here aresome tips:

• Aerobic exercise. Regularexercise that raises yourheart rate (walking, joggingor bike riding) is one of themost effective ways to in-crease HDL levels.

• Lose weight. Obesity canboth increase LDL and lowerHDL cholesterol. If you’reoverweight, losing even afew pounds can improveyour HDL.

• Stop smoking. Giving uptobacco can increase yourHDL cholesterol by up to 10percent.

• Eliminate trans-fattyacids. Trans-fatty acids arepresent in many preparedfoods-anything with “par-tially hydrogenated veg-etable oils” on the nutritionlabel. Removing them fromyour diet, while not easy, will

almost certainly raise HDL. • Increase monounsaturated

fats. Monounsaturated fats-such as canola oil, avocadooil and olive oil, and fatsfound in peanut butter-canincrease HDL without in-creasing your total choles-terol.

• Moderate alcohol con-sumption. While excessivealcohol puts you at increasedrisk for heart disease, moder-ate alcohol consumption canactually increase HDL asmall amount.

If your HDL level remainslow despite diet and exercisechanges, there are prescrip-tion medicines that mayhelp. People with cholesterolissues should speak withtheir physician about treat-ment options.
