The History Behind the Thanksgiving

Turkey

Why Turkey?

The Oregonian noted that, while we can’t be sure of when the turkey came into the mix, there is one key figure who advocated for the bird to be served on Thanksgiving — Sarah Josepha Hale (1788-1879). Not only did Hale, a well-known writer (she penned “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” among other works), urge families to adopt certain foods like turkey, but she was also the driving force behind pushing the U.S. government to adopt Thanksgiving as an official holi-day. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln obliged —

and here we are today.

Fall is finally upon us and the weather is turning cooler. Sharon and I are looking forward to the Leaf Peeping trip since we have not been able to go before. We have been to Eureka Springs be-fore but not to check out the fall colors. We also have enjoyed the ride to Toad Suck Park and the fellowship with the other chapters and the memories of those who have passed on. Of course we ate too much especially the des-serts. Thanks to all that attended from Chapter E. I think we had the most from our chapter

there

Sharon and I would like to commend all the offi-cers and people who have volunteered to make Chapter E the best AR Chapter. Speaking of volunteers as you may remember the e-mail I sent asking for someone to take Skips job as Ride and education coordinator and the MEC position. We have two people that have come forward and said they would take the positions. Those two being O J and Jan Miles. Jan will be the new Ride coordinator and OJ will be the MEC. Thank you two for stepping up and volun-

teering. I know you will do a great job.

Ride Safely and have a good time!

Pompei was a city in Italy near present day Naples. When Mt. Vesuvius erupted in AD79 the town was buried under 13-20 feet of volcanic ash and pumice. Our guide stated that there were around 13,000-15,000 people in the town. In walking the city you realize that this was a good size town. They

are still uncovering new areas even today.

This photo shows the main square.

This persons last moment alive.

This photo is from Pompeii showing Mt Vesuvius in the background.

From the south side of the gulf of Naples it’s a jet boat ride to the Isle of Capri. This photo shows the harbor in Capri. The other main town, Anacapri is at the top of the mountain. This photo was taken from a tour boat and shows some of the “Sea Stacks”) just off the coast of the main island.

This photo is from the Ancient Theatre in Taormina Sicily. It shows the coast line including

Taormina and other towns. Mt Etna is in the upper right.

This is the theatre built in the 3rd century BC. They still use it today as seen by the rebuilt stage, modern seating and electronics. It’s typically used for theatrical, operatic and concerts. The photo below is of Taormina on the East coast Sicily. Population of this town is around

12,000.

Photo from the ferry boat coming into Sicilia (Sicily). Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterra-nean Sea. One of the prominent features of this island is Mt Etna an active volcano which is just short of 11,000 feet high. The capital of Sicily is Palermo which has over 5 million inhabitants.

Palermo is the 5th largest city in Italy.

These 2 photos are of Matera Italy. These homes started out as caves. Structures were added later usually onto the top of the caves. For the longest time this town was the black eye of Italy because of the squalor. Matera is one of the oldest continuous inhabited cities in the world be-

ing inhabited since the 10th millennium BC.

This photo is of the Lecce Cathedral in Duomo Square originality built in in 1144. Lecce in the

main city in this region ( the boot heel of Italy) it’s over 2000 years old.

This photo is a typical street in Cefalù Sicily and for that matter for most small towns in Italy. Don’t know if you can see it but all over Italy people hang their laundry out to dry from their bal-conies. It’s not that they don’t have clothes dryers it’s that they

think it’s too expensive to use them.

This is the Cathedral of Cefalù. Construction started in 1131. It was rebuilt around 1400. Cefalù is a town of over 14,000. It is a major tourist destination receiving millions of visitors not only from Sicily but from all over Europe.

This is a shot of the main part of the church.

These photos are of the Royal Palace of Palermo (Sicily). Oldest part on the right and an newer ex-

tension on the left.

This is the courtyard inside the Palace. During WWII the Palace was used by Gen

Patton as his HQ.

This photo is of the Palatine Chapel. It’s located within the Royal Palace. The pictures of religious figures in this photo as well in the next photo are not painted but are mosaics. Tiny pieces of col-ored tile placed by expert craftsman. The art is absolutely amazing. That being said the entire chapel is way way over the top in terms of opulent decoration.

This art is done by mosaics! The chapel was started in 1130 and was fin-

ished 13 years later- amazing.
