An Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You
are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace
You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be
separated from You. Amen.

That takes you back to your abode...”-PHISH
You know, Technology is a great thing. But it has led me to be less aware than I used to be. I wish I paid more a en on to things around me, as some mes I’ll miss some details. Usually it happens when I am watching something on TV, could be a show or a game, and I’ll either be trying to mul -task, or I’ll get distracted… and I miss some key part. But the good thing is, I can now pause or rewind to see what I missed. That’s pre y amazing when you think about it. Which sounds great, but is it? My keen powers of observa on and awareness have dulled. Why? Because I don’t have to pay close a en on very much anymore. And so, I’ll miss some things, some mes right under my nose.
This weekend, it’s s ll Easter Sunday in the Gospels, the first day of the week, and Jesus appears to two disciples on the road to Emmaus from Jerusalem, my second favorite resurrec on account in the Gospels. Here, Jesus shows us his sense of humor and also the message for us to be aware. Aware of others, and aware of his tangible presence among us. He becomes their traveling companion for that seven mile trip. At first, they do not recognize him. Not un l the breaking of the bread. Then they were aware, or made aware, of who was really with them. Imagine that… what a road trip!

NOTES FROM THE PASTOR How about me? Am I aware of God’s presence with me? While I’m on the road? How about during the stay-at-home order? During Mass? Is my heart burning within my soul?
I invite you to pray this prayer of Spiritual Communion during these days, especially to help become more aware of the Lord and his presence.
My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself en rely to You; never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

The Gospel reading describes the profound disappoint-ment of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. They are approached by a traveler whom they do not recognize, but whom we know to be Jesus. When Jesus asks what they are discussing, Cleopas retells the story of Jesus’ passion, ending with the most amazing news: the tomb in which the body was placed was found empty! The stranger now chastises them for not believing what the prophets had announced. He begins to recount the passages of the Old Testament that referred to Jesus. In telling this story, the Gospel’s author, Luke, stresses that without recourse to scripture, no one could have anticipated the Resurrection. In fact, in order to understand Jesus’ true identity and his Messiahship, one must begin with scripture. Then in the course of breaking and blessing of the bread, the two disciples recognize Jesus. “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?”
RESPONDING IN PRAYERLord Jesus, be present among us as you were present
to your disciples at Emmaus, so that you might open our minds to understand the scriptures and empower us to bear witness to your resurrection.

SPEAK TO US, FEED USAt every Sunday Mass we re-enact today’s Gospel as we
come together to walk with Christ, to hear him speak, and to recognize him in the bread broken and the cup poured out.
INSIDE THE READINGSPeter is the chief spokesperson for the newly reconsti-
tuted Twelve (Acts 1:15–26). After the coming of the Spirit, he addresses those Jews who have gathered in Jerusalem for the feast of Pentecost. He provides a summary of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, but the focus remains on God’s action. It is God who sent Jesus. God worked through him to effect miracles, wonders, and signs. The purpose and plan of God led to Jesus’ being delivered to pagans and crucified. But God freed him from that death and raised him to new life. As his scriptural support, Peter refers to David, who acknowledged that God is “ever before me.”
The reading from First Peter shares with Acts the focus on God’s actions. As a father, God will judge justly. This same God delivered believers from their former ways, not by paying in silver or gold, but by offering Christ’s blood as the Passover lamb. First Peter is a circulating letter, meant to be read among various communities (1 Peter 1:1). These believers are sojourners in a strange land (1 Peter 1:17) because their faith now sets them apart from the pagan society of which they were once members.
In fact, in order to understand Jesus’ true identity and his Messiahship, one must begin with scripture. THE STRANGERImagine meeting a stranger, a fellow traveler, who butts into the conversation you’re having
with your friend. The two disciples in today’s Gospel are heading to Emmaus, seven miles away from Jerusalem, heartbroken and disillusioned. It’s the day of Jesus’ resurrection, but no one knew it when these two set out on their journey, maybe going home to resume their pre-Jesus lives because it seemed as if everything was over.
In the middle of trying to make sense of the tragedy, some eavesdropping guy asks them about their troubles. After telling their story, the disciples are amazed to find this stranger able to piece together the fragments of the broken image of their master using scripture as the glue. Then it happens—at dinner they recognize Jesus in the breaking of bread, just before he vanishes. With their hearts burning with love and inspiration, they run back to Jerusalem—at night—to tell the others their new story.
The stranger in this story who turns out to be Jesus is reminiscent of the Gospel images of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. He seeks out his “lost sheep” who have strayed from the faith community, and the experience of the risen Lord transforms them into perhaps the very first evangelists, shar-ing their Good News with their friends back in Jerusalem.
Are we transformed by the time we leave Mass? We should be! Our hearts should be burning within us from our experience of Jesus in word and sacrament. Yet how often life breaks our heart and clouds our mind! We stumble toward our own Emmaus, unaware that Jesus is with us. We are privileged to experience Jesus in every Eucharist through the breaking open of scripture and by the breaking of the bread. Like the disciples of the story, that transforming experience can compel us to go forth and tell everyone the Good News. Today’s Readings: Acts 2:14, 22–33; Ps 16:1–2, 5, 7–8, 9–10, 11; 1 Pt 1:17–21; Lk 24:13–35
