A noun phrase includes anouna person, place, or thingand themodifierswhich distinguish it.
You can find the noun dogin a sentence, for example, but you don't know which canine the writer meansuntil you consider the entire noun phrase: that dog, Aunt Aud rey 's dog, the dog on the sofa, theneighbor 's dog that chases our c at, the dog digg ing in the new f lower bed.
Modifiers can come before or after the noun. Ones that come before might include articles, possessivenouns, possessivepronouns,adjectives, and/orparticiples.
Articles:adog, t h edog
Possessive nouns:A u n t A u d r e y 's dog, the n e i g h b o r ' s dog, the police o f f i c e r ' s do g
Possessive pronouns:o u rdog, h e rdog, t h e i r dog

A subordinate clausealso called a dependent clausewill begin with asubordinate conjunctionorarelative pronounand will contain both asubjectand averb. This combination of words will notformacomplete sentence. It will instead make a reader want additional information to finish the thought.
