LIGHT NIGHT RESEARCH
Date: Friday 8th March Time: 6:00pm – 9:00pm The sixth annual Light Night event is being held on Friday February 8th with some exciting new entertainment, music, installations and projections and the return of some family favourites. Light Night transforms the city and truly brings it to life after dark with a blend of entertainment suitable for all ages. Many activities are unique to Light Night so don't miss your chance to explore and experience the city in a new perspective. Whatever your tastes, there's bound to be something to entertain you and your family. Light Night gives Nottingham a real buzz with lots happening indoors and outdoors and special offers in restaurants and other venues. This year's highlight will be Elemental Force, a projected animated performance using Nottingham Castle as a backdrop. This spectacular is brought to Nottingham by The Arts Council East Midlands and Experience Nottinghamshire. For one night only Nottingham Castle plays host to a celebration of history in the form, of a feast of film light sound and fire. Elemental Force is a series of free spectacular large-scale outdoor shows which put historic buildings centre stage and use light, sound and film to celebrate the rich heritage of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Building on the themes that made the Opening Ceremony of London 2012 Olympic Games so memorable, these events will capture the drama and excitement of the region’s past, present and future. Some of the area’s most significant historic buildings have been chosen as the backdrop for these events. The stories of these sites will be brought to life by some of the country’s leading outdoor artists in a way that audiences have never seen before, using a combination of giant digital projections with stunning visual special effects and pyrotechnics.

PREVIOUS LIGHT NIGHT REVIEWS, PREVIEWS
AND IMAGES
After discovering that Light Night was a forthcoming event in Nottingham I decided to conduct
research to gauge public opinion on the successes of previous Light Night events to determine
whether it would be a suitable subject for my VT.
http://www.designjuices.co.uk/2012/03/nottingham-light-night/
This reviewer was extremely positive and posted some spectacular images. She refers to several
events in close proximity to each that are all part of Light Night which indicates there will plenty
to film. The closeness of each event indicates that it will be feasible to cover with a small
production team. Below are some of her images that she posted; I think they look great as still
shots and could potentially look fantastic on film.

This is a preview to the upcoming 2013 Light Night which highlights some of the mini events
happening around Nottingham. It also suggests that weather is forecasted to be dry for the
event but if that does change it also mentions the fact that there are both indoor and outdoor
displays. This means that if it does begin to rain on the night of the event then we can still film
the indoor events.

The above link was a preview to the 2012 event and hinted that Light Night had received
increased funding since the 2011 event suggesting it is a very popular event with both the public
and Nottingham City Council. This preview also indicates that local businesses are getting
involved with Light Night meaning increased trade. This could be an angle to come at when
planning my VT.

‘Definitely one of the city’s finest events, Light Night is making a triumphant return to Nottingham
for its fifth consecutive year. Puppeteers, buskers, artists and a whole host of weird and wonderful
things will be taking to the streets around the city to enthral young and old alike.’

DETAILS OF EVENTS
Looking at the outdoor events, the main ones are within a reasonable proximity to each other. As
I only have a few hours to cover a number of events, I have highlighted the ones I think will be
not only the most spectacular but also the ones that will be easy to travel on foot to and from.
There are a number of events going on in Bulwell and Hyson Green which, although they may be
great, will be a little too far to travel to. Elemental Force is the main event and must be included
in the VT, there are performances at 6:30pm and 8:30pm, both of which I have booked advance
tickets for in case of it becoming fully booked. I feel this is where I am going to get the most
spectacular footage from I have also only selected events that are free in order to keep costs to a
minimum.
Outdoor (Weather Permitting) Indoor (In case of rain)
Elemental Force Nottingham Castle 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Lace and Light with Stella Corrall Debbie Bryan Shop 5:00pm to 9:00pm

MARKET RESEARCH
Light Night appears to be a viable event to cover for the DTN Spotlight Nottingham project
however, to make doubly sure there is public interest in the event I conducted some market
research. There are three ideas that I currently have in mind for the VT; Light Night, Nottingham
Festival of Words (which is on between the 9th and the 24th February) and a piece on the Canoe
Club at Holme Pierrepont.
As the Spotlight Nottingham target audience is a broad demographic I made sure that I covered a
broad cross section of society when surveying the public. Below are the categories and the
respective number of people that took part in the survey and also the results. I tried to make the
participants from each category even to make the survey representative of the population.
I surveyed 50 members of the public on which event/topic they would most like to watch using
the following descriptions:
Light Night: ‘Nottingham's Light Night will brighten up the city centre in spectacular fashion as it's set for a return on Friday night. Light Night will give you the opportunity to see the city sights transformed by beautiful light shows.’
Festival of Words: ‘Do you like to read crime or noir? Do tales of love, sex and desire get you hot
under the collar? What about reading comics? The main Nottingham Festival of Words weekend
takes place at Nottingham Trent University's Newton Arkwright Building, featuring authors from
across the spectrum.’
Holme Pierrepont Canoe Club: ‘At Holme Pierrepont you will find a warm welcome and a group of
paddlers who are ready to help and inspire you. Whether it is getting started, learning the latest
freestyle moves, serious training for competitions or cruising the waterways in an open boat or
kayak, there will be something for you’

LIGHT NIGHT PITCH

LIGHT NIGHT PITCH: THE VERDICT
I delivered the pitch to the other team members today and received a good reception from both
my colleagues and from Andy. It was generally agreed that Nottingham Light Night would be a
good event to cover. Andy stated that visually it could potentially look amazing and that since the
event is free and is taking place at locations around the city centre it was agreed that logistically
and financially it would be a viable idea.
I felt that my pitch covered a lot of detailed information. I gave an overview of the event,
highlighted a number of events that were happening, gave reasons why it would be a good idea
to cover the event, highlighted particular locations around the city where I would be filming,
gave a breakdown of the rough narrative structure of the VT and listed the required equipment
and potential costs.
There were questions raised about what angle the VT would come from. It was suggested that as
it was public money that was being spent there may be a backlash from some viewers unhappy
that public funding was being spent on an artistic event. A counter argument to this would be
that local bars and restaurants would benefit from the increased trade from attendees to Light
Night, thus pumping money back into the local economy.
The only other questions that were raised were that of the weather (as most of the events will be
outdoors) and the issue of hiring equipment over the weekend as Light Night occurs on a Friday
evening.
I will be booking equipment tomorrow for the shoot; hopefully there shouldn’t be any
problems….
