Message from Deacon Nick Danze, Pastoral Associate

Dear Parishioners,

Today is the Feast of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit in tongues of fire descended upon the disciples and

Mary in the upper room fifty days after the Resurrection. Like Easter and the Ascension, this is a monu-

mental day in our Church. Without the Holy Spirit, we do not have the Church; we do not have the abil-

ity to intimately relate to God.

The period of time between the Lord’s Ascension into heaven and the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pen-

tecost Sunday has always been observed as a special time of prayer. Scripture tells us that Jesus ascend-

ed to heaven 40 days after Easter and Pentecost occurred 50 days after Easter.

The Lord instructed His disciples to spend the nine days between those events praying. This is the origin

of the Catholic practice of the “novena” (from the Latin word for “nine”.) A novena consists of praying

for some particular intention for nine consecutive days. It’s just another example of one of those

“Catholic things” that we didn’t just make up, but comes from the scriptures and the practice of the early

Church.

The Solemnity of Pentecost marks the end of the Church’s observance of the Easter Season.

Consider this beautiful prayer to the Holy Spirit, known as the Veni Creator. Perhaps you might pray it at some point today.

Come, O Creator Spirit blest, And in our souls take up Thy rest, Come with Thy grace and Heavenly aid, and fill the hearts which Thou hast made.

Great Paraclete! To Thee we cry, O highest gift of God most high!

O fount of life! O fire of love! And sweet anointing from above.

Far from us drive the foe we dread, And grant us Thy true peace instead; Oh, may Thy grace on us bestow The Father and the Son to know,

All glory while the ages run Be to the Father and the Son

Who rose from death; the same to Thee, O Holy Ghost, eternally. Amen.

At Pentecost, something was set in motion that is still reverberating today. Just like when we peel an arti-

choke, it is only when we reach the heart that we get to taste the best part. My friends, because we call

ourselves Christian, we know it first hand, we saw it in action this morning, we tasted the goodness of

the Holy Spirit, the power of God's love!

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love!

In HIS Peace! Deacon Nick

Stewardship

June 9, 2019 Stewardship Guidance Pentecost Sunday

“The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.” (J 14:26) The materialism of our society lures us to concentrate more on what we want than on what God wants for us. The relativism of our world tells us that we should be tol-erant of all things, that there is no absolute truth. Pray to the Holy Spirit for Stewardship to transform our lives and to guide our thoughts, words and actions.

Family Reflection Corner

Weekly Readings Reflections Pentecost Sunday

Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:

Jesus entrusted his disciples with the mission of

forgiving sins. When have you needed for-giveness from the members of your family? Talk about ways your family can continue the disci-ple’s mission of forgiving sins.

The gift of the Holy Spirit enables us to grow in acceptance and understanding of one another. Each evening at the dinner table, discuss one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and ways that your family can live out that gift.

Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. To help celebrate, bake a birthday cake for dessert. Dec-orate the cake with the color red, to symbolize the Holy Spirit.

What keeps your family from being one in Christ? Where is reconciliation needed? What can you do to help heal your family? Where do you see the presence of the Spirit?

Would you be interested in memorializing a new Paschal Candle Holder and Altar Candles for St. Ann Church? If so please call Jon Delgado at the parish office 609.522.2709, x. 219

Pentecost Sunday Happy birthday to the Catholic Church! Happy birthday to you, who are the body of the Church! We're all familiar with our own birthdays, and we celebrate them because they mark the day of the year in which we entered into this life. But did you know you have a second birthday? Because you are part of the body of the Church, Pentecost is the Church's birthday, and yours as well. And like any birthday, it's a cause for celebration. The word Pentecost is Greek and it means "50th day." Fifty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers, and the beginning of their Earthly ministry to make disciples of all nations. Pentecost is also a Jewish holiday, which the Jews use to celebrate the end of Passover. Jews cele-brate the gift of the law to Moses at Mt. Sinai on this day. But we, as Catholics celebrate the birth of our Church. At Pentecost, the Apostles and their followers were gathered in a room. Jews from all over the world were gathered with Peter, the leader of the Apostles and the Eleven. At this time, a great wind blew and a flame appeared as a tongue of fire, which split itself into many individual flames above the heads of all those present. The Holy Spirit came upon these people and each began to speak in tongues. Despite the fact many had no common language, they were perfectly able to understand one another. Others who were not so blessed, accused those speaking in tongues of being drunk, but Peter arose and addressed the crowd, explaining that it was only 9 o'clock, and that this phenomenon was not intoxication, but rather this was the work of the Holy Spirit, prophesized in the scripture. Peter then called all those present to be baptized and about three thousand people were baptized that day. These people were among the first Catholics, and Peter is the first pope of the Catholic Church. The symbols of Pentecost are the flame, wind, and the dove, which represents the Holy Spirit. The color of Pente-cost is red and the priest wears red vestments on this day. Parishioners are also invited to wear red on this day. Red decorations as well as celebrations are appropriate, similar to any other birthday. Special prayers are often said just for Pentecost.

We are Currently at 83.70% of our Parish Goal
