It is w ith pleasure that we call the attention of our readers to this excellent

institution for the deaf and dumb attached to the University of Notre Dame.

The unfortunate class of our fellow-creatures has been in this country almost

debarred hitherto from any advantage of Catholic education; yet, the impor

tance to them of a sound religious training is greater, i f possible, than to

others, from their entire dependence on their instructors. W hen their

minds have once received, by the efforts of their teachers, the ideas commun

icated to them, they retain these impressions with a tenacity which, as

experience proves, is not subsequently overcome. The religious ideas there

fore communicated to them by non-Catholic teachers remain w ith them.

How can parents and guardians undeceive them, therefore, on their return

home, after perhaps a long absence from anything that speaks to their sense

of the ancint faith, after years of instruction b y those whose sentiment and

belief are either more or less directly opposed to it ? On Catholic parents of

such children we urge the duty of sending them where their spiritual life

will be fostered and encouraged, while their morals and intellect are cultivated , and we trust that the action of the Society of Holy Cross, in supplying this great want hitherto existing, in the noble efforts our country has made for the instruction of deaf mutes, will also be nobly responded to.

Pupils for this department will be received in the University or in the Manual Labor School, and a good common or a collegiate education will be given as parents or guardians may prefer. School begins on the first Tuesday of September and closes on the last Wednesday of June. Pupils are at liberty to spend their vacation in the Institution. A catalogue containing full particulars will be sent to any person on aplication to Very Rev. E. Sorin, C, SS. C., President of the University, or to G\ O’Brien, C. SS. 0., Principal of the Deaf and Dumb Department. There is a similar Institution for females at St. Mary’s Academy, beautifully situated at a distance of one mile from the University.
