Call for Volunteers
An Open Letter from Jessie Campbell, 5th District Commander
Calling for Volunteers: American Legion Post 160 Hi Legionnaires and Legion Family:
Legionnaires: I need you to Legion-Up and come forward and help revitalize American Legion Post 160.
Elections to fill key positions on the executive board will be held in two weeks.
WE NEED CANDIDATES to step forward support those who have had their names put forward to fill key
position on the executive board. American Legion Post 160 can revive and thrive with a solid team of ex-
ecutive board members and volunteers that will pitch in to run the post and to make decisions in best interest
of the membership.
I, the 5th District Commander, have done everything within my Authority during the past year to keep post
160 open and running as an American Legion Post and I have assisted to carry out programs. Post 160’s Ad-
jutant has circulated several news articles requesting participation by and help from the membership and re-ceived very few responses. While thankful for those who have responded, we need more assistance!
Post 160 has over 800 members on its green bar and over 600 have renewed their membership. I am very
hopeful that those that have volunteered to fill the slate of candidates for leadership will be actively support-
ed by other members as many hands make light work. If on election night Post 160 cannot fill all positions
on the executive board, the District will be left with no other choice but to recommend to Department of Georgia to Suspend Post 160 charters for lack of participation by the membership.
This is my final plea for each of you to stand up for this Post by participating in the upcoming elections and
show leadership. Remember why we joined the American Legion: to serve veterans, their families and the community, God and Country.
IT IS NOT TO LATE TO SAVE AMERICAN LEGION POST 160
Thank you (let's Legion up),
Jessie Campbell
5th District Commander

General of the Army Dwight “Ike” Eisenhower’s
ranking as our 34th President of the United States of
America in 1962 was 22nd
. This grew in 2017 to a
ranking of 5th
, largely due to an increasingly favor-
able view of his crisis leadership. He inherited a
strong competitive streak from his parents, plus a
bad temper, along with unquestioning love, stern
discipline, ambition, and religion. They made him
study, read the Bible aloud, do chores. His parents
instilled in their son Ike, a series of controls over his
emotions, his temper most of all.
Politics was not the favorite game of President Ei-
senhower; in fact, what he witnessed in Washington
almost drove him to the point of nausea. Ike
worked with the system as it was thrust upon him
and became quite adept with politics. The media
did not understand that President Eisenhower did
not care who got the credit for the job getting done
– just so it got done – and that it was always for the
good of the Nation.
In a speech to the American Legion for the Legion’s
“Back-to-God” program 2-20-1955, Ike is quoted,
“Without God, there could be no American form of
government, nor an American way of life, recogni-
tion of the Supreme Being is the first - the most
basic - expression of Americanism, thus the found-
ing fathers saw it, and thus, with God’s help, it will
continue to be”. That morning of the same day he
gave that speech, he had been baptized in a Wash-
ington D.C. church – the first President to be bap-
tized while in office.
In 1954 President Eisenhower would sign the bill
letting “one Nation UNDER GOD” be placed in our
Nation’s Pledge of Allegiance. In 1956 he signed
the bill to have, “In God We Trust,” displayed on
America’s currency and to be our national motto.
Sherman Bruce
Post 160 Chaplain
After President Eisenhower left public office for
retirement, he asked President Kennedy for a favor
– he wanted his “General of the Army” title re-
stored. He wanted to be called General instead of
Mr. President.
In General Eisenhower’s final months of his life, he
was confined to Walter Reed Medical Center. One
of his last visitors he summoned was Billy Graham,
whom he asked to recite the plan of salvation Gra-
ham had first shared with him 14 years earlier. Gra-
ham did so, to which the General responded, “I’m
ready.”
Each one of us must ask ourselves that same ques-
tion, “Am I / you ready?”

Memorial Day Ceremony
May 29th at 9:30 AM On Monday, May 29, 2017, at 9:30am, the City of
Smyrna, Georgia will hold its annual Memorial Day
ceremony.
Of special interest is that this year marks the 100th
anniversary of America’s entry into World War I.
World War I created the notion of the United States
of America as a superpower. Not because the Unit-
ed States hadn't previously won wars. It had. Not
because we hadn't beaten European powers before.
We had.
What changed was that in this war the United States
fought against a major, world class adversary,
alongside others of the world's best armies, held its
own and was the primary force for victory.
World War I started in August 1914, as France,
Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, Serbia, the
British Empire and others went to war. What was
expected to be a quick, decisive war became a long
and costly stalemate, where millions died or were
wounded.
The United States joined the fight on April 6, 1917.
A year passed before the American Expeditionary
Forces saw real action. But fight it did: at
Seichepry (April 1918), Cantigny (May 1918), Bel-
leau Wood and Chateau Thierry (June and July
1918), St. Mihiel (September 12-15, 1918) and in
the large Meuse-Argonne Offensive (September 26
- November 11, 1918) - all in France.
US Air Service (USAS), US Navy (USN) and US
Marine Corps (USMC) fought in the skies, while
the USN escorted ships and hunted U-boats in the
Atlantic. World War I finally ended at 11:00 am on
November 11, 1918. Over 21 million died; 11,700
of whom were Americans. Another 21 million from
all nations were wounded. Everyone's life was
changed; the world changed.
In all the wars in which the United States of Ameri-
ca has participated, there have been 651,008 battle
deaths and about 1.2 million deaths overall. About
42 million of our men and women have served in
the military during wartime. About 2% (1/50th) of
the people serving during a time of war have died.
When we gather on May 29th
, we gather for the sole
purpose of honoring all who gave their lives in ser-
vice to the United States of America and the de-
fense of freedom.
We invite you to attend our ceremony, enjoy dis-
plays of military equipment which will include cur-
rent and vintage military and security vehicles and
weaponry, a US Marine Patrol Boat, H3 Hummer
and Rock Wall and other attractions. The Georgia
Army National Guard Band, Campbell High School
JROTC, and USAF Honor Guard will participate in
the ceremony. This year’s featured speakers will be
MG (Select) Jesse Simmons, Jr. and CPT Donna
Rowe, Vietnam Theater US Army Nurse Corps.
Ceremony sponsors include The City of Smyrna,
Smyrna Veterans Committee, Veterans Memorial
Association of Smyrna, American Legion Post 160,
Northwest Speakers, Smyrna Rotary Club, Jonquil
City Kiwanis, Chick-fil-A of South Cobb, and JWC
Real Estate.
The event will be at the Smyrna Veterans Memorial
at 2800 King Street (between Smyrna City Hall and
the Smyrna Library). The event and parking are
free. The rain location is the Smyrna Community
Center.
The American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 160, will
distribute poppies Memorial Day Weekend: Sat-
urday (5/27) & Sunday (5/28) from 10 AM - 4 PM
at Kroger at South Cobb & Concord; Wal-Mart on
East West Connector; and Kroger on Atlanta Road.
In additions poppies will be available on Memorial
Day (5/29) at the Ceremony from 9:30 - 10:30AM
Sign-up sheets to assist with poppy sales are on the
Bulletin Board in the club room.

National Poppy Day
May 26, 2017
The American Legion Family
has called upon Congress to
designate the Friday before
Memorial May as National Poppy DayTM
to expand
awareness and provide support everywhere for all
who have served and sacrificed in the United States
Armed Forces.
“The American Legion is pleased to bring Poppy
Day to the United States, joining countries around
the world that use the symbolic flower to remember
their fallen and support their living,” American Le-
gion National Commander Charles E. Schmidt said.
This year, the Boeing Company is premier sponsor
helping The American Legion, American Legion
Auxiliary, Sons of The American Legion and Amer-
ican Legion Riders increase public understanding of
the poppy, its meaning and the ways in which it can
be used to help veterans today and remember those
who have served in the past.
The American Legion, led by the American Legion
Auxiliary, annually distributes poppies with a re-
quest that the person receiving the flower make a
donation. This raises over $6 million annually to
provide support for veterans, military service mem-
bers and their families.
“By wearing poppies on May 26, 2017, we honor
every U.S. service member who has given his or her
life in the name of liberty, freedom and democra-
cy,” Schmidt wrote in the May issue of The Ameri-
can Legion Magazine. “At the same time, by wear-
ing this simple red flower, we show our support for
veterans of generations to come.”
A new website at www.legion.org/poppyday offers
multiple ways The American Legion Family can
expand awareness locally and regionally. Included
on the site are media tools, message points, sample
proclamations for elected officials and easy access
to the American Legion Emblem Sales “Poppy
Shop,” which offers an assortment of affordable
items including the new National Poppy Day pin,
kits for making lapel poppies for distribution, fund-
raising containers, charms, scarves and more.
Also through the website, National Poppy Day do-
nors can make safe, secure contributions with their
credit cards and dedicate their gifts to personally
honor veterans now living or in memory of those
who have passed. All donations directly support
military veterans and families through American
Legion programs.
The site also provides, under the heading “Get In-
volved,” a new set of media tools and promotions
that can be modified for local use, including press
releases, sample social media posts and down-
loadable high-resolution graphics. The “History”
section of the site has a full-color, downloadable
poster featuring the poem “In Flanders Fields,”
which led to the red poppy’s emergence as an inter-
national symbol of military sacrifice.
American Legion Family members who plan poppy
distributions and similar commemorations around
May 26 and the week leading into Memorial Day
are urged to use the hashtags #PoppyDay and
#LegionFamily so activities can be shared on Face-
book, Twitter and other social media channels.
American Legion Riders participating in their annu-
al Run to Thunder event in Washington, D.C., as
well as chapters conducting local rides heading into
Memorial Day weekend, are also planning to make
the red poppy a visible symbol of sacrifice and en-
couraging the public to wear or otherwise display
poppies to honor those who have served.
The American Legion designated the red poppy as
its official flower at the organization’s second na-
tional convention, Sept. 27, 1920. Since then, mem-
bers of The American Legion Family have raised
awareness in communities, inspired by the 1915 po-
em, "In Flanders Fields", by Canadian Lt. Col. John
McCrae, M.D., who saw firsthand from the front
lines of World War I the emergence of red poppies
around the graves and in the battle zones where
blood was shed to protect freedom and democracy.

Expression of Hope: The Mel Pender Story The strong legs, and quick feet, attached to Melvin Pender's five-foot,
five-inch frame, have taken him to first-place finishes as a world-class
sprinter. His gift of speed reached a pinnacle when he won a Gold Medal
as a member of the 4 x 100 relay team in the 1968 Mexico Olympics. The
feat was accomplished while Army Captain Pender was a combat soldier
who was pulled out of the fighting in Vietnam which was an unpopular
war. The story of Pender’s life will cause hearts to pound with joy, sad-
ness, anger, and pride, as he chronicles his life's journey from childhood to
pre-teen years idolizing the military and his decorated war hero, Audie
Murphy, while growing up in two different impoverished and segregated
worlds in the South. He was not limited by his surroundings, though, and
found good and bad in them.
Determination was etched into Pender’s DNA, and he wanted to do something
to make his family proud, and "be somebody!" His, is a story of the American Dream. He owns it, and he em-
braces it. He was scarred by the racial challenges of the 1950s and 1960s, but Pender found better angels, black
and white, and kept his dream from becoming a racial nightmare. The United States Army and track propelled
him into an historic figure. For some, Pender is the track world's "Black Knight," not because of his color, but
because he befriended and helped others in his profession as a big brother, father-figure, and as a friend.
There will be a book-signing on Saturday, May 13th at the Breakfast from 9:00 - 10:00 AM.
The price for paperbacks is $22 and they are set up to take bank cards as well as cash.
Mel has been a member of Post 160 since April 2015.

Wade Lnenicka: Hat in Ring for Commander My Fellow Legionnaires:
You know now that I am offering myself as a candidate for Post Commander
in the May election. Thank you for the support. My goals are simple:
Maintain unity among the Legion Family (AL, ALA, SAL)
Restore the Post to financial solvency
Remove the Post from probation by Department.
I cannot do this alone. I ask that all Legionnaires help and cooperate in the
spirit of doing what is best for the American Legion, Post 160, and the com-
munity and Veterans we serve. One thing I keep hearing is that "I've done
my part in the past, and I don't have to do any more." That is wrong. The
American Legion is a volunteer-driven private club...Like all private clubs,
the American Legion depends upon its members. We need your help.
If you want to be "waited on" where you don't have to do anything, visit a private restaurant. If you want to
be doted on by snooty people, join a ritzy fancy club where dues are thousands of dollars a year. But, if you
want to serve Veterans, to be a part of the community, to help people in need, and to be with your best
friends, then renew your membership in the Post 160 family and remain active in it. And, help us recruit
new members to the AL, the ALA and the SAL.
I have been a member of Post 160 for 24 years, soon to be 25. My late father (a WW II Veteran) was a Post
160 member. My late maternal grandfather (a WW I Veteran) was a member and Commander of Post 312 in
Broadwater NE. Being involved in the American Legion and its activities has always been part of my life. I
love the American Legion and what it stands for. Let's work together to keep Post 160 a great part of our
community.
Thank you for your support.

Queen of Hearts Game Starting in May The Board is firming up the Rules for a Queen of Hearts Game to begin at Post 160. They
will be approved and brought to the General membership for final approval in May.
All members of the American Legion Family (AL, ALA, SAL, ALR) from any legion
post, as a member in good standing with a valid membership card, will be eligible to
play. Guests who are signed in by members are not eligible to play.
Tickets are $2.00 each with no limit on the number of tickets purchased. Tickets may be purchased immediately after the weekly drawing and up until the next drawing.
All tickets sold are single stub tickets. You must legibly print your name and telephone
number on the back of each ticket. There can be only one name per ticket. Once your name is on the ticket, return it to the Bartender or person running the Queen of Hearts for
that drawing, to be placed in the raffle drum.
If you will not be present for the drawing, you also need to designate a card (envelope) number from 1through 54 to be
turned if your entry is picked. If you would like to donate your winnings, you can use any reference to Post 160 organiza-tions (i.e. Post 160, ALA 160, SAL 160, or future Riders 160). If you are not present, and have not designated a card (en-
velope) number to be turned, a card chosen at random will be turned.
The Queen of Hearts drawing will occur every Wednesday at 7 PM. (Exception: When the game first begins, tickets will be sold for 2 weeks before the first drawing.) The draw will be from the tickets purchased since the last drawing.
Tickets will be drawn by the bartender, a member of the Post 160 Executive Committee, or a designee of the Staff.
If a ticket is drawn with no name on it, it will count as the allowed draw for that session. If you show up at 7:01 PM, and
your name was called 3 times, you will be considered not present. Being considered not present it will have an effect, per
on the payout. Drawings will not be held on any Wednesday that fall on a National Holiday (e.g. Christmas) and / or
whenever the Social Quarters are closed. THE CLUBROOM CLOCK IS THE OFFICIAL CLOCK.
If your name is drawn, you will have the opportunity to search for the Queen of Hearts on the game board. You will se-
lect a card (envelope) from the game board noted on the back of your card or open at random. If the card chosen is the
Queen of Hearts, the winner, if present, will receive fifty percent (50%) of the jackpot. Of the remaining fifty per-cent (50%), thirty percent (30%) goes back to the jackpot, ten percent (10%) goes to support programs at the Post, and ten
percent (10%) goes to the Post 160 General Fund. If the winner is not present, the winner will receive twenty-five
percent (25%) of the jackpot. Of the remaining seventy-five percent (75%), fifty-five percent (55%) goes back to the jackpot, ten percent (10%) goes to support programs at the Post, and ten percent (10%) goes to the Post 160 General Fund.
Additional prizes will be awarded as follows, but only for players who are considered Present for the Drawing: JOKER –
$ 50.00; ACE OR ANY FACE CARD – $ 25.00; ALL OTHER CARDS – $ 5.00
Each card selected and turned will have the winning ticket attached and that card will remain on the board. Once the “Queen of Hearts” is selected, the board will no longer be in play and will be placed in storage, with the attached win-
ning tickets for a period of three years. A new board will be placed in play. Once a card is selected, it will be removed
from play. This will be done by placing the card face up on the board. Each week, after the drawing, all non-winning tickets will be destroyed.
All winners are responsible for payment of any and all taxes. Prizes over $600.00 will be paid by check and the win-ner will be issued a W2-G (1099). NO prize over $600.00 will be paid until the W2-G (1099) information is com-
pletely filled out. If a winner is unwilling to fill out a W2-G (1099), the prize will revert back to Post 160.
