We’re starting off this year with our new General Manager, Dale Snellman. Dale has been on property for about a month now and he’s already making high marks communicating and coordi-nating with staff and directors. We’re fortunate to have the PGA and club management back-ground in our Mobile native GM. Welcome Dale! We have a new operator at the Stables. Daphne Vaughan is taking over the lease and already mak-ing plans for improvements. The Stables, a unique and hidden jewel, adds value and character to our neighborhood. Welcome Daphne! We have hired a new contractor with a new scope of work to take over the maintenance of our common areas and entrances. Braxton’s Landscape and Lawn Care did such a tremendous job at the Montclair Pool, we’re happy to announce that they will not only maintain that property, but all of it. We get complaints on a weekly basis on the appearance of our entrances. Braxton’s contract will include that maintenance and seasonal flora. Welcome Braxton’s! Our new website is very close. We’ve been collaborating with our department managers, making sure we have relative and useful information for all of our amenities. We’re working with repre-sentatives of our accounting software, Jonas, to bring our member accounts online and accessible through our website. We’ll have a comprehensive calendar of all of our programs and schedules. The member log in section will have useful and relevant information and documents that contain too sensitive of information to put out in the public. Our lease with the city of Daphne at the boat launch is going to allow the city to make significant improvements to the boat ramp and dock. They’ll also make improvements on the shore line East of our A dock, and in the parking area East of the harbor shack. This lease will also give Lake Forest an infusion of $150,000 to make improvements on our property down there that isn’t in-cluded in the leased land with the city. The first order of business will be to replace our bulk head that has been blown out since last summer. Plans are underway for that bulkhead and other im-provements around the Yacht Club. Our plans are to renovate the Ridgewood Pool after the swim season this year. Plans are being drawn up for improving the entire site. We’d love some input here. We get numerous complaints about some activity that goes on around the basket ball court. In the renovation, do you think a basket ball court should remain a component? If so, should it be fenced in and protected by the same electric gates we have at the pool entrances? We’ve got some time on this one, so let us know what you think at a board meeting or send us an email. We’re commencing a new portrait of Lake Forest this year, but the paint is still fresh from last year. Hundreds of thousands of dollars of our dues was spent on some great projects. Hundreds, even thousands of man hours of our board of directors and management were poured in to make it all happen. We’ve got a great team that’s dedicated to making Lake Forest the best it’s ever been. I’m proud to be a part of the team. From discovering a 40 year old septic tank at the Montclair Pool and getting the sewage tied into city sewer, to discovering that Lake Forest owned and was respon-sible for maintaining 14 aids to navigation in the Blakeley River, coordinating with the USCG to get them discontinued, to 2 show - stopping irrigation pump failures for the golf course, finding a way to get them replaced, and so many other challenges I’d just love to forget. We still managed to pull off one of the best face lifts we’ve ever seen at the Montclair Pool. We got all of our internal signage and entrance signage replaced, along with replacing another round of road signs with deco-rative posts. We negotiated and entered into a lease with the city of Daphne, for some great im-provements at the marina. Bravo ladies and gentlemen! Not to harp in the past, but our December 2015 stated meeting was one of the best meetings we’ve ever had. We had close to 20 residents that attended the meeting. Thank you to every one of you who attended. Thank you for your questions, your suggestions, your concerns, and your com- ments. Your board of directors needed that input and interaction. Let’s not stop there. This com-munication will lead to members that are more informed about their neighborhood and directors that are more informed about the needs and wants of the membership. We’ll be there at the same time and the same place every month. Please come back and try to bring your neighbors. This neighborhood and the nearly $3,000,000 gross annual revenue cooperation belong to all of us. 2017 will be what we make it. With our 40 year old properties, catastrophes are inevitable. They will make their mark on our portrait. What will paint this canvas successfully will be the hard work, communication, and cooperation of the people that get their hands dirty and make their im- pression on the portrait. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, but I’m even more excited about what is to come. I’m inviting all of you to get involved, reach out, communicate, and make your impression on the picture we’re painting for the future of Lake Forest. Steve Sasser Presidents Comments Let's Paint The LFPOA Board of Directors has approved a special $50 assessment for 2017. They are splitting the $50 assessment into two $25 payments, one due in January 2017 and the other due in February 2017. This assessment goes to capital improvements only. It is reflected in your 2017 coupon book, which is your annual statement. If you are already on auto draft, we will continue to pull the amount due each month. NOTICE

General Managers Report

Dale SnellmanGeneral Manager

Personal IntroductionI would first like to thank

my fellow co-workers, members and property owners that have extended a warm welcome to me during my first month of employment at Lake Forest. My name is Dale Snellman and I am your new General Manager. I was born and raised across the bay in Mobile and grew up playing golf at Skyline Country Club. After attending the University of Southern Mississippi, I had great hopes of playing golf competitively for a living but after realizing making 2 footers for grocery money was a little more than I bargained for so I became a PGA member.

The last 6 years I have spent my career working for a medium sized golf course management group. My

experience with Touchstone Golf literally took me across the country to work at multiple facilities which helped me go from a seasoned golf professional to a tried tough general manager. Working with many POA/HOA’s has helped me in accomplishing my goal of finding a home at Lake Forest.

I look forward to the challenges that managing a multi-amenity facility has to offer. I will utilize my entire skill set to make Lake Forest the model community on the Gulf Coast.

Wishing everyone a safe and prosperous New Year!

Dale SnellmanGeneral Manager

Golf Course reminders:All golfers must register in

the golf shop prior to playing golf. This is required so we can properly manage our tee sheet and to track rounds for forecasting purposes. It also helps the golf shop communicate with the golf course maintenance staff about where all our golfers are on the course.

If anyone sees non golfers

on the golf course please contact the golf shop at 251-626-9324 immediately so we can keep an accident from occurring. This will also help us keep damage to the golf course at a minimum.

Golf tip of the month: Grip pressure-constant grip

pressure is a must during the golf swing. Whether it is firm or light both hands should remain on the club to prevent regripping at the top of the backswing. Ben Hogan taught us that a correct grip was vital to a good golf swing because the hands were the only part of our body connected to the club which put them in control.

Open door policy: Let us know how we can

better serve you, the LFPOA members. My goal is to get more community involvement at all the amenities the neighborhood has to offer. Golf & tennis clinics will be targeted for Lake Forest residents, special events at the yacht club catered to youth and adults and lunch specials at the 19th hole are on the agenda for 2017. So let us know your ideas on how to make Lake Forest the place to be in Baldwin County.

Regardless of the dollar value of a person’s assets, it is essential to have a well-drafted and all-encompassing estate plan in order to avoid unnecessary costs and complexities in the event of death or incapacity. Creating an estate plan could be as simple as preparing a last will and testament, powers of attorney, and living will or be more complex and include a variety of trusts agreements.

A comprehensive estate plan drafted by a competent estate planning attorney can (i) coordinate what happens to real estate, investments, and personal property in the event of death or incapacity; (ii) ease the transfer of assets to heirs; (iii) exempt the personal representative of the estate from statutory requirements such as purchasing a bond and filing inventory, accounting or settlement during probate; (iv) ensure that assets are distributed in accordance with personal wishes; (v) anticipate and mitigate disputes between loved ones; (vi) provide for succession considerations for businesses; and (vii) provide protection for minors and those with special needs.

Most simple estate plans consist of a last will and testament, a durable power of attorney for health care, a durable power of attorney for property, and a living will. The

purpose of the last will and testament is to provide for the distribution of estate assets after death through the probate court. A durable power of attorney for health care designates a person to make health care decisions in the case of incapacity or the inability to provide informed consent. Durable powers of attorney for property appoint a person to act and manage financial matters in another’s absence, or incapacity. Likewise, a living will provides doctors and hospitals with instructions in the event of permanent incapacity.

It is sometimes advisable to have a more complex estate plan which may include living trusts. Living trusts are formed when one party (“settlor” or “grantor”) during his or her lifetime transfers real and/or personal property to a second party (“trustee”) for the benefit of a third party (“beneficiary”). This trust relationship is governed by a “trust agreement” or “trust declaration”. The trust agreement outlines the identities of the settlor, trustee and beneficiary, and governs how the trustee is to manage and distribute the property placed into the trust. Furthermore, the same person can be the settlor, trustee and beneficiary of a living trust.

A great advantage of a living trust is that the settlor is able to pass assets seamlessly to beneficiaries upon death while avoiding probate. Passing assets outside of probate is accomplished by re-titling assets

in the name of the trust rather than in a person’s individual name. Consequently there are no probate assets and no need to open an estate in the probate court at the settlor’s death thus avoiding expensive and protracted legal proceedings.

Because of the myriad of issues that may be of concern, estate plans should be customized to the needs of the individual. Therefore, when developing an estate plan it is highly advisable to discuss estate planning goals and objectives with a licensed attorney who practices estate planning law.

The law firm of Caldwell Wenzel & Asthana, PC is proud to represent and draft estate plans for numerous residents in our community. C. Randall Caldwell Jr, Drew Wenzel and Dee Asthana are the partners at Caldwell Wenzel & Asthana, PC and practice primarily in the areas of estate planning, estate litigation, elder law, probate, personal injury and general litigation. The Lake Forest Women’s Club held t h e i r D e c e m b e r meeting on December 15, 2016, at the Lake Forest Yacht Club. The club was beautifully d e c o r a t e d f o r Christmas and hostess Connie Mahoney made a lovely red cranberry punch for all to enjoy in the spirit of the season.

The new Lake Forest General Manager Dale Snellrman came to introduce himself and wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Our members voted to make another annual contribution to Prodisee Pantry and individual members gave donations to Jean Wildenhaus to purchase items for Women Helping Women which provides

such things as diapers and intimate hygiene products to Prodisee Pantry for their clients. It was also announced that Prodisee Pantry is in need of donations of peanut butter. All members joined in singing Christmas songs and Betty Ellenberg won a beautiful Winter Rose Poinsettia as a door prize. Everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch and

fun social time. Please join us on January 19, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. for our January meeting

and luncheon. All members are invited. New members and guests are always

welcome! We look forward to seeing you in the new year!

Connie Mahoney was asked to put together a committee for decorating the Clubhouse, 19th Hole & Yacht Club several years ago. We had 20 volunteers at that time but when we tore down the Clubhouse the committee began to get smaller.

Every Christmas Connie asks her friends to volunteer and she proceeds to organize the group. They start the decorating process at 9:00 a.m. in the 19th Hole. Once that is complete, they go and decorate the entrances to Lake Forest, followed up by the Yacht Club. There’s always plenty to do at the Yacht Club where they do the Chart Room, bar area and dining room.

The committee works for hours and usually finishes up around 2:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. Then after Christmas, they take the decorations down and put them in storage for next year!

The Club serves a light lunch since the committee has been working with Connie for the past 10 years. She will be looking for younger helpers next year, so if you are newly retired or single and would like to volunteer please let us know. It’s not only fun and rewarding, but it’s also a great way to meet some of the other residents here at Lake Forest! The committee needs your help. Please call the office at 251-626-0788 if you would like to volunteer to help Connie and the Christmas

Decorating Committee next year!

We would like to thank the Christmas Decorating Committee volunteers for all of the hard work they put into decorating and making Lake Forest look so beautiful and festive. These special volunteers help bring a bit more happiness and cheer each Christmas season and we want to thank the following for their dedication to Lake Forest. A special thanks to Connie & Dave Mahoney, Ginny & Bruce Peterson, Connie & Tony Bono, Nancy Henderson, Jackie Kearney and Ron Simon. We appreciate your efforts so very much!

The December meeting of the Lake Forest Garden Club was held on December 1, 2016, at the Lake Forest Yacht Club with 23 members present. President Dana Sawyer called the meeting to order and Judy Baust gave the Inspiration. First Vice-President Janet Pruitt

introduced Jodie Trabue owner of Windsor Florist who gave a demonstration of Christmas crafts and decorations. She began by making a large candy cane on a metal frame using Deco Mesh which was poofed and tied onto the candy cane metal frame. She then added Christmas ornaments and other decorations. Next she showed us how to

make mailbox covers using premade frames decorated with greenery and ornaments and brightened with battery lights. Her creations were highlighted with lovely bows which she taught us how to make stressing the importance of twisting the ribbon after each loop and using five loops on each side of the bow. It was so much fun watching her work and she made her creations look easy! Be sure to visit her shop Windsor Florist to

decorate your home! She also sells the deco Mesh ribbon and accessories.

We appreciate the effortsof our residents to improvethe image of Lake Forest. One way this can be done is by replacing old and dilapidated maiboxes. If for any reason you would like to purchase a mailbox like the one pictured above, or have a leaning Vandalet Mailbox straightened, please email [email protected] or call 626-0227. This service provides removal of the old post and box, installation of the cast iron post in concrete and placement of the house number on the mailbox.

TheFishing Hole

By Billy HarrellHarbor Master

I hope everyone had a safe and prosperous Christmas and New Year holiday. Between the food and the football, I am just about ready to start fishing again. But first I have to change the line on 10 reels, clean and lubricate them, wipe off salt and build-up on the rods, lubricate the eyes on the rods, change the oil in the motor, change the oil in the lower unit, clean bilge in hull of boat, wash and wax boat, lubricate the trailer, check and replace lights on the trailer, check and replace tackle, and renew license and decals if necessary. Heck, I think I’ll just go deer hunting since I have a

month left to hunt and take advantage of the cold weather.

For you devoted and brave souls, my January fishing report reveals the water temperatures have dropped into low- 60’s. The fishing has been fair and the weather was good until the strong winter fronts showed up. The bay and rivers are muddy due to the wind and rain, but the salinity of

the water is about .05 ppt in the Delta. This means flounder are back down to the gulf and the redfish are all alone in the Delta and trout have moved to the deeper channels of the creeks and rivers. What this really means is the cooler weather makes for cooler water temperatures and the fish bite becomes slower, making live bait harder to find. Also, be aware of the tide changes this time of year because the water levels can drop quickly and leave you stranded on a sand bar or a mud flat which is not very pleasant this time of year.

Till next month, stay warm and keep a tight Line.

January is here and it is the start of a brand new year at Lake Forest. Our goal is to get more residents out to the courts playing tennis and being involved. Our first step is to run a beginner co-ed adult tennis class. See below:

Attention to all Lake Forest residents. The racquet club will be hosting a co-ed adult beginner tennis class starting March. If you ever wanted to learn how to play tennis now is the time. Seize this opportunity and come out to learn a new sport. The class starts Thursday March 9th at 7:00 PM and will run for 8 weeks. There will be one class a week for a total of 8 classes. You will learn the fundamentals and be able

to play a match at the end on 8 weeks. Check out our flier on this page or go to www.lakeforestpoa.org to download it. The cost of this program is only $50 for all 8 weeks. The deadline to sign-up for this class is March 1st. Email Mike Albrecht at [email protected] to sign up or call him at251-648-3952 for any questions. Beverages will be provided every week.

The men played for the area championship at the

3.5 level on December 12 and came up a little short. They ended fighting hard but taking second place in the Mobile/Eastern Shore area. Thanks again to captain Johann for another great job leading the team. We truly do have a great group of guys out here playing tennis. If anyone is ever interested in getting on a men’s team or playing with the guys please let us know. Email or call Michael Albrecht at [email protected] or 251-648-3952.

Tennis TipOF THE MONTH When hitting an approach shot in doubles try to move forward through the swing. You can accomplish this by stepping forward with your normal foot first, swing second, and then let your other foot carry you through the shot. It is almost as if you are walking through the shot. This move will bring you to the net faster and have you prepare for the first volley earlier.

If you are interested in joining a league, please contact Mike Albrecht at 251-648-3952 or email him at [email protected].

Have you ever wanted to learn how to play tennis? Here is your chance. An adult Co-ed night time beginner tennis program is starting Thursday March 9th, at 7:00 PM, at the LFRC in Daphne, AL.
