I sent it her and she just said, ‘Oh, no, no, no. Nobody cares about me this much. That’s got to be cut down. No- body wants to know that much about me.’ ” – Cinnamon Ramer, parent “We were singing the song Old Joe Clark . . . right before the concert. Mrs. Krehbiel was direcng dramacally and we were all doing well when it got to the end and Mrs. Epp was to wait a certain amount of me and then play a chord at Mrs. Krehbiel’s direcon. But, totally ignoring her sister, (Mrs. Epp) pounded out the final chord in total dis-synchroni- zaon. Mrs. Krehbiel jumped in horror and gaped at her sister, and Mrs. Epp smiled at Mrs. Krehbiel and promptly announced, ‘I’ve been waing to do that all year.’” – Kolby Van Camp, student “She brings a lile atude . . . to whatever we’re doing. She really says what’s on her mind and what really needs to be fixed, and then she makes a joke about it, too.” -- Morgan McReynolds, student “I always really enjoyed the sibling rivalry, quote unquote, thing that Marilyn and Mrs. Krehbiel had.” – Maggie Carar, student “She likes joking around, but she’s sll really insighul about all the music. She gets every- one to listen to her.” - Amy Nystrom, student “She kind of just inspires me with her piano playing ability . . . seeing her be able to play this music, somemes just sight reading it like, perfectly, is kind of amazing. Plus she puts feeling and emoon into her music.” –Tucker Click, student “Since 1991 (with a brief hiatus several years ago) Marilyn has been a steady guide, play- ing beaufully, accompanying as though she can read directors’ minds, running seconal rehearsals, catching incorrect notes, creang original arrangements, and keeping us laugh- ing with her understated but sharp wit.” - Carolyn Welch, LCC arsc director MARILYN EPP RETIREMENT CONCERT Sunday, April 13, 3:30 PM at Free State High School Tickets available at www.lawrencechildrenschoir.org or at the door.

“I was tasked to write a feature article about Marilyn for the newsletter, years ago, so of course I embellished and . . . talked about how really great she was. I sent it her and she just said, ‘Oh, no, no, no. Nobody cares about me this much. That’s got to be cut down. No-body wants to know that much about me.’ ” – Cinnamon Ramer, parent

“We were singing the song Old Joe Clark . . . right before the concert. Mrs. Krehbiel was directing dramatically and we were all doing well when it got to the end and Mrs. Epp was to wait a certain amount of time and then play a chord at Mrs. Krehbiel’s direction. But, totally ignoring her sister, (Mrs. Epp) pounded out the final chord in total dis-synchroni-zation. Mrs. Krehbiel jumped in horror and gaped at her sister, and Mrs. Epp smiled at Mrs. Krehbiel and promptly announced, ‘I’ve been waiting to do that all year.’” – Kolby Van Camp, student

“She brings a little attitude . . . to whatever we’re doing. She really says what’s on her mind and what really needs to be fixed, and then she makes a joke about it, too.” -- Morgan McReynolds, student

“I always really enjoyed the sibling rivalry, quote unquote, thing that Marilyn and Mrs. Krehbiel had.” – Maggie Carttar, student

“She likes joking around, but she’s still really insightful about all the music. She gets every-one to listen to her.” - Amy Nystrom, student

“She kind of just inspires me with her piano playing ability . . . seeing her be able to play this music, sometimes just sight reading it like, perfectly, is kind of amazing. Plus she puts feeling and emotion into her music.” –Tucker Click, student

“Since 1991 (with a brief hiatus several years ago) Marilyn has been a steady guide, play-ing beautifully, accompanying as though she can read directors’ minds, running sectional rehearsals, catching incorrect notes, creating original arrangements, and keeping us laugh-ing with her understated but sharp wit.”- Carolyn Welch, LCC artistic director

Yoo Hoo! News You’ll Want To Hear About

When Singing Really Pays Off: LCC Alumna Hunter Ramer Earns Full Scholarship

Matt Rood was chosen for a star-ring role in the Tech N9ne video for the song, Fragile. “My character is a new kid in a town who plays an instrument,” said Rood. “The other kids bully him and don’t really understand. They tease him about the violin.”

“It’s surreal to see my face on television,” said Rood. “I turned on MTV U while visiting to audition at Indiana University, and my face was on! I still don’t believe it’s true.”

Rood, now a member of Chorale and the president of A Cappella Choir at Lawrence High School, plans to continue singing and performing. Cyndi Rood, Matt’s mother said, “I can remember chaperoning the trip to NYC that Matt took as a 5th grader and watching his face when we saw Wicked on Broadway. I think his desire to perform and work as an actor was sparked that night. He loved performing with the choir and appreciated working with people who took it as seriously as he did. He gained leadership skills, and most importantly a sense of self and confidence.”

Rood agreed that his experience in LCC helped him. “LCC taught me valu-able skills of self-sufficiency and taking direction. Janeal Krehbiel’s policy of relying on students to learn their music and do their share of work made me able to work independently and solve issues without having to run to other people for help immediately.”

2,000,000 hits& counting!

LCC alum Matt Rood stars in national video

LCC alumna Hunter Ramer will be singing her way through her first years of college, as she is a recipient of a full two-year vocal scholarship. Next fall, she will begin her college journey at Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) with a full class schedule, and a new choir.

Ramer chose KCKCC because it offers unique scholarship opportunities for kids who want to continue with choral music. John Stafford, KCKCC Choral Director, was impressed with Ramer’s overall vocal skills including her ability to read music, stay on pitch, and mimic complex tone memorization exercises—skills he said placed her above her scholarships competition. Stafford expressed his pleasure to have a former LCC member join his choral program, which includes Ensemble, Acapella , Jazz and Gospel choirs.

Ramer’s background in music began with LCC in 2005 when she auditioned for Tour Choir as a shy and timid 5th grader. Having been encouraged by her school music teacher to audition, Ramer put on her favorite dress, took

countless deep breathes, and nervously walked into her audition. The rest is history.

Ramer would go on to perform with LCC for the next five years and tour nationally and internationally including Carnegie Hall and Lithuania.

“LCC has given me opportunities that other kids haven’t had. It has not only made me a better singer, it has made me a better person. LCC makes kids responsible, more disciplined and overall well-rounded people,” Ramer said. Although she aged out of LCC after 9th grade, she continued singing through high school and is now prepared to experience choral music at the college level.

“I learned everything I know about choral music from being in LCC,” Ramer said. “It has given me skills and experience that I am so grateful for, and truly think it has enhanced my life. I made many close friends, went on so many fun trips, and made some of my best memories in LCC.”
