Born, probably, April 4, 1677 (see Drymen Baptisms) ; married, November 25, 1700, Beatrix Smith (Glasgow Marriages) ; died, Jan. 21, 1732 (Glas. Com. Rec. Tests, vol. 51, fol. 88), and was buried in the New (or Blackfriars’) Churchyard on the 25th (Glasgow Rec. of Mortality). Had a half share in the “ Hatt factory ” in Glasgow. Born about 1683 (see Trades’ House, p. 254) ; married, first, April 14, 1704, Janet Buntine (Glasgow Marriages), eldest daughter of George Buntine by Grizel Anderson (Glasgow Burgh Sasines, July 11, 1719), who died in March, 1725, and was buried on the 5th (Glasgow Rec. of Mortality) ; married, secondly, about 1727, Sara Gilhagie, who died in June, 1734, and was buried on the 15th (Glasgow Rec. of Mortality) ; married, thirdly, January 16, 1735, Margaret Gilhagie (Glasgoiv Marriages), youngest daughter of William Gilhagie of Easter Craigs (Merchants’ House, pp. 527, 528), who died in September, 1776, at Duntreathhill, Strathblane. Testament dative recorded, October 24, 1776 ; the executrix dative qua nearest in kin being her sister-german, Jean Gilhagie, relict of George Bogle, merchant in Glasgow (Glasgow Com. Rec. Tests, vol. 67, p. 303). By his first marriage he had only one surviving son, Walter Buchanan (124), writer in Glasgow (Glasgow Burgh Sasines, Aug. 7, 1741). Janet Buchanan, his daughter, who was enrolled a pensioner of the Society, February 24,1767, was probably also by this marriage. Andrew Buchanan, the father of Walter Buchanan (284) and Andrew Buchanan (276), was probably a son of the second marriage. He died in June, 1758, and was buried on the 12th (Glasgow Record of Mortality). His will, dated May 26, 1758, was recorded in the Glasgow Commissariot, July 27, 1759 (vol. 60, p. 368),George Buchanan, youngest, merchant in Glasgow, being nominated executor, whom failing, the latter’s spouse, Margaret Buchanan. Admitted Burgess and Gild Brother as second lawful son to Walter Buchanan, Burgess and Gild Brother, May 28, 1702. Admitted a member of the Incorporation of Maltmen, May 29, 1702. Subscribed to Auchmar’s book, 1723. Was “ of Meadow Park” about 1738 {Merchants’ House, p. 529). See Auchmar, 1723, p. 111 ; and Strathendrick, p. 297. [His age as given in the Record of Mortality is 68, but this must be an error for 75.]

Married Isobel Miller, March 13, 1706 (Glasgow Marriages), who died in June, 1736, and was buried in the N.W. Churchyard on the 12th (Glasgow Rec. of Mortality). Subscribed to Auchmar’s book, 1723. Died in July, 1731, and was buried in the N.W. Churchyard on the 27th (Glas. Rec. of Mortality). His testament dative was recorded, August 26, 1731 (Glas. Com. Rec. Tests. vol. 50, p. 647). His third son, George, was apprenticed by the Society to a bookbinder in 1732. See Auchmar, p. 115.

Father of John Buchanan (197). Preses, 1729. Treasurer, 1727. Director, 1725, 1726, 1728, 1729, 1730, 1731. Born about 1687 ; married, January 22, 1723, Catherine Graham (Killearn Marriages), daughter of John Graham of Killearn ; died in May, 1757, and was buried on the 14th in he N.W. Churchyard (Glasgow Rec. of Mortality). Subscribed to Auchmar’s book, 1723. A sister, Jean Buchanan, was enrolled a pensioner in 1764. She was born about 1690, and died in November, 1765, being buried in the High Churchyard on the 23rd !Glasgow Rec. of Mortality). His daughter, Margaret Buchanan, succeeded her brother, and was the last of the family. She died, January 10, 1792 (Scots Magazine, vol. 54, p. 50). Is designated “ John Buchanan of Middleton W.S .” in 1741 {Stirlingshire Sasines, vol. xix. fol. 120). Afterwards merchant in London. Father of George (194)- Brother of George B. (1), Andrew B. (19), and

Archibald B. (12). He was the third of the four brothers as in “ Auchmar/’ though the pedigrees in Burke and elsewhere make him the youngest. Director, 1728. Bap¬ tized, May 3, 1698 {Glasgow Baptisms) ; married (con¬ tract dated Nov. 5), 1719, Anna Rae, daughter of George Rae, merchant in Glasgow; died, February 13, 1744 {Scots Magazine, vol. vi. p. 98). Anna Rae, his relict, died April 19, 1779 {Scots Mag. vol. 41, p. 221). M.P.’ for the Glasgow Burghs, 1741-1744. Was “ of Hilling- ton.” Subscribed to Auchmar’s book, 1723. Father of Peter B. (238), George B. (203), and Andrew B. (204). Brother of George B. (1), Andrew B. (19), and Neil B. (11). Was the youngest of the four brothers. Treasurer, 1729. Director, 1728, 1730 (described as “Merchant above Cross”). Baptized, July 20, 1701 (Glasgow Baptisms) ; married, Dec. 5, 1728, Martha Murdoch, daughter of Provost Peter Murdoch (born, February 21, 1702 ; died, October, 1764) ; died, March 13, 1761 (Glasgow Journal, March 19, 1761), [March 12, 1761 (Merchants’ House, p. 587)]. “ An eminent mer¬ chant of this place who with a feir character acquired a plentiful estate which he has left to his family ” (Glasgow Journal). 13. John Buchanan, elder, merchant, Glasgow.

Father of Robert B. (127). Probably elder brother of Walter B. (4), and Thomas B. (26) ; and brother-in-law of Robert B. (29), whose sister was his wife. If he was identical with the eldest son of Walter Buchanan, baxter, he was admitted Burgess and Gild Brother, Dec. 11, 1719 {Act Book, Dean oj Guild Court). Evidently the same as Campsie John, who married, probably, June 5, 1705 {Glasgow Marriages), Margaret Buchanan (born about 1691, died in March, 1761, and was buried in the Black- friars’ Churchyard on the 13th) ; died in November, 1741, and was buried in the Blackfriars’ on the 30th {Glasgow Rec. oj Mortality). His testament dative was recorded, Nov. 28, 1752, Robert Buchanan, merchant in Glasgow, his son, executor dative, given nearest in kin {Glas. Com. Rec. Tests, vol. 58, p. 514). Besides Robert Buchanan of Blantyre Park he had another son, William Buchanan, merchant in Glasgow, who succeeded his brother in Blantyre Park, and two daughters, Jane Buchanan and

Margaret Buchanan, wife of Dugald Buchanan of Craigie- vairn. Merchant in Bell’s Wynd. Acquired one-half of the 40s. lands of Blantyre Park in 1724, and one-half the 40s. lands of Little Udston, 1725 (.Lanarkshire Sasines, vol. xni. pt. 2, fol. 278, 390). " Maltman ” possibly an error for " merchant.” There was a William Buchanan admitted a member of the Incorporation of Maltmen, August 19, 1696, and another, May 28, 1703, but they died in 1717 and 1718, and the above William is described on April 15, 1725—a few days after, his admission—and always thereafter as

merchant, and in 1731 as “ Elder, merchant.” Direc- i73i- Probably brother of Gilbert Buchanan

of Bankell (37), and father of Gilbert B. (57), and Wil¬ liam B. (89). William Buchanan [merchant in Glas¬ gow]^ married, June 24, 1686, Janet Allan (Glasgow Marriages), who died, July, 1690, her testament dative being recorded, September 10,1691, her husband executor dative, and Robert Buchanan, maltman in Glasgow, his brother-german, cautioner for him {Glas. Com. Rec. Tests, vol. 45). William Buchanan, merchant in Glasgow, mamed, about 1696, Janet Colquhoun, and their eldest son was Gilbert Buchanan, merchant in Glasgow (Glas. Cow. Rgc. Tests. Feb. 25, 1738). He had also a daughter Elizabeth, by Janet Colquhoun, who married Robert Donaldson; contract dated April 23, 1733 {Glasgow Com. Rec. Tests, vol. 53, p. 32). William Buchanan was a calenderer in Blackfriars’ Wynd. William Buchanan, merchant, died in May, 1738, and was buried on the 23rd {Glasgow Rec. of Mortality). His testament dative was recorded, November 17, 1738, Janet Colquhoun, his relict, being appointed executrix dative {Glas. Com. Rec. Tests, vol. 53, p. 179). Father of John B. (132) and Colin B. (191). Boxmas- ter, 1726, 1727. Director, 1733, 1736. Was enrolled as a pensioner, August 18, 1758 (see Minute Book, vol. i. p. 113). Born about 1685 (Regality of Glasgow, Act Book, No. 2, July 6, 1741). Died in June, 1759, and was buried on the 6th (Glas. Rec. of Mortality), his age being recorded as 78 (that is, born about 1681). Usually designated “ Peter ” in the Society’s books. Admitted Burgess and Gild Brother by Act, September 25, 1717.

Boxmaster, 1732,1733. Enrolled as a pensioner, 1761. Married, June 4, 1716, Margaret Dougald (Glasgow Marriages), who died in October, 1744, and was buried in the N.W. Churchyard on the 29th (Glasgow Rec. of Mortality). Admitted Burgess and Gild Brother, Feb¬ ruary 25, 1720. Deacon of the Barbers, 1726, 1727. He had a sister, Catherine, who had a grant from the Society in 1757.

Brother of Thomas B. (8). Boxmaster, 1729, 1730. Director, 1733, 1734. Treasurer, 1735. “ Andrew Bu¬ chanan, junior, merchant taylor in Glasgow,” married Lilias Russell, and died in May, 1741 (Glasgow Com. Rec. Tests, vol. 53, p. 632, and vol. 55, p. 411). Described as ” widow of Andrew Buchanan, junior, tailor, alias Gar- tocharn.” Lilias Russell had grants from the Society, on various occasions, 1754 to 1762. A daughter, Isabell, had a grant in 1762. Admitted notary, April n, 1688. Succeeded to Nether Gartin- caber, 1719. Bought Craigievaim, 1741. Described as John Buchanan, senior, writer in Edinburgh. Father of James B. (116). John Buchanan, wright in Drumglass, married a daughter of James Logan, feuar of Drumglass, and had a son, James, and a daughter, wife of Donald Buchanan, in Legnaline of Leny (see Dunbartonshire Sasines, vol. x. fol. 473, June 7, 1773). He married, secondly, Isobel Currie (born about 1685), who died in November, 1767, and was buried on the 24th (Glasgow Rec. of Mortality).

26. Thomas Buchanan, shipmaster.

Brother of Walter B. (4), and probably of John (B. 13). Only son of Walter Buchanan, baxter, by his marriage to Grizel Wallace {Glasgow Com. Rec. Tests, vol. 51, p. 221) ; the other brothers being by a former marriage. Married, February 9, 1727, Margaret Gibson, daughter of John Gibson of Nether Newton {Barony Marriages), with a “ tocher ” of 2000 marks {Glasgow Com. Rec. Tests. vol. 51, p. 221). Besides several sons, who died young, they had a daughter, Isobell, who married James Muir, surgeon in Glasgow {Services of Heirs, July 19, 1744), and was the eventual heiress of Nether Newton, which she sold. Margaret Gibson died in March, 1733, and was buried on the 14th ; and Thomas Buchanan died in October, 1735, and was buried on the 6th {Glasgow Rec. of Mortality). Subscribed to Auchmar’s book, 1723. Born 1694-5 ; married Mary Arbuckle, who survived him, and, dying about November 1, 1760, was buried

His relict, who was born about 1792, died in August, 1758, and was buried on the 29th in the N.W. Churchyard (Glasgow Rec. of Mortality). Was father of Dr. John Buchanan, baptized December 12, 1723 (Glasgow Baptisms), and Christian Buchanan, married Thomas Napier, watchmaker in Glasgow, a donator to the Society. Andrew Buchanan, merchant, Bo’ness.

Probably son of Andrew Buchanan in Shirgarton, 1678 (see Wodrow’s Church History, Burns’ edition, vol. ii. p. 482), and Janet Cunninghame {Information from Mr. W. M. Hunt). Andrew Buchanan in the parish of Carriden and Mary Murray in the parish of Borrow- stouness were proclaimed in order to marriage, July 18, 1710 {Carriden Proclamations). Mary Murray died before December 27, 1728, when her testament dative was recorded in the Edinburgh Commissariot (vol. 92). She was probably Andrew Buchanan’s second wife, and left no children, as her nephews and nieces were her heirs. By her marriage contract, dated July 26, 1710, £1000 Scots was settled upon her. “ Andrew Buchanan, mer¬ chant Dyed Deer. 13” [1749], buried Jan. 1st {Bo’ness Deaths). De¬ scribed as “ Gardener in Barrowfield,” he had a sasine of lands in Calton, recorded July 3, 1723 {Renfrewshire Sasines, vol. viii. fol. 30). He married, July 6, 1725, Marion Wilson (born about 1699), who died in December 1764, and was buried on the 12th {Glasgow Rec. of Mortality). He was admitted Burgess and Gild Brother October 7, 1735, as married to Marion Wilson, daughter to umqll. Mathew Wilson, gardener. From the testament dative of Professor James Buchanan we find that the latter had three sisters—Jean Buchanan, spouse of William Lindsay, innkeeper, Glasgow ; Mary Buchanan, spouse of Allan M‘Allan, gardener there ; and Margaret Buchanan, spouse of Andrew Harvie, weaver in Calton {Glasgow Com. Rec. Tests, vol. 61, p. 289). Mary Buch¬ anan, born about 1730, died in 1764, and was buried on November 2 {Glasgow Rec. of Mortality). Her husband was Deacon of the Gardeners, 1735, 1736. Born probably about 1702 ; married, June 2, 1732, Elizabeth Donald (Cardross Marriages). Irving states [Book of Dunbartonshire, vol. ii. p. 309) that he acquired the lands of Geilston by marriage in the beginning of the 18th century, but it is probable that he succeeded to them through his mother. He was also proprietor of half the lands of Little Tulliechewan, which he sold to William Buchanan of Ladrishmore. Geilston he sold to the Donalds. James Buchanan, portioner of Little Tulliechewan (see Auchmar, p. 73), married, 1700, Margaret Bontine [Cardross Proclamations, Nov. 10,1700 ; Bonhill Proclamations, Nov. 16, 1700), daughter of John Bontine of Geilston. The marriage contract was dated December 11, 1700. Their son was John Buchanan, afterwards of Geilston. James Buchanan died in February, 1704 [Glasgow Com. Rec. Tests, vol. 49, p. 296). James Buchanan and Margaret Bontine had also a daughter, Barbara, baptized, September 8, 1703 [Bonhill Baptisms), who married, February 26, 1730, William How, merchant in Port-Glasgow [Cardross Marriages).

Appointed Officer of the Society in 1764; retired in 1770, being “ old and infirm,” and was enrolled as a pensioner.

A James Buchanan, vintner, born about 1728, died in 1764, and was buried on the 4th June, aged 36 (Glasgow Rec. of Mortality). His testament dative was recorded, June 28, 1764, his executive dative being the relict Ann Buchanan, and James Buchanan of Craig- endmuir, parish of Barony, cautioner (Glasgow Com. Rec.

In Glasghu Facies he is called “ Bailie," but the Buchanan Society Minute Book shows that it was Andrew Buchanan, junior, afterwards of Ardenconnal, who was Bailie in 1778. The Buchanan Society made an allowance of

64 ten guineas a year to his five children from 1785 to 1795, through George Coats, a relative. Four daughters are mentioned in Frances Innes’s testament dative (Glas. Com. Rec. Tests, vol. 75, p. 452). Frances, born January 3> *775 (Glasgow Baptisms) ; Janet, Mary, and Ann, born September 1, 1782 {Ibid.). The fifth child would probably be John Oswald, born October 24, 1780 {Ibid.). He was the original projector of Buchanan Street, Glas¬ gow, which was named after him. Lindsay, innkeeper, had a grant from the Society in 1772 ; Margaret Buchanan, married A. James Buchanan, " servant to Blythswood,” who became a member of the Maltmen’s Incorporation, was married to Ann Buchanan, daughter of James Buchanan, maltman, Nov. 20, 1761 {Minute Book of the Maltmen). In 1768, in the register of burial of a child in the Glasgow Record of Mortality, he is described as “ Vintner, late Porter to the University.” He died before January 8, 1779, when his two daughters, Jean (Mrs. Allan) and Mary, are served heirs portioner general to him {Services of Heirs). He married Margaret Buchanan {Buchanan Baptisms), and was father of Thomas Buchanan. Ann Buchanan, relict of deceased John Buchanan, late hatter, was enrolled a pensioner of the Society, October 25, 1799. The Directory for 1783 gives his address as Trongate, and from the Minute Book it appears that he was then a tenant of the Society. In 1787 and 1789 he appears as “ hatt-manufacturer, shop head Gallowgate No. 9." John Buchanan & Co., hatters, were sequestrated, Janu¬ ary 18, 1794 {Scots Magazine, vol. 56, p. 64). His daughter, Agnes, born December 5, 1763 {Glasgow Baptisms), died at Bothwell Park, Nov. 6, 1815 {Scots Magazine, vol. 77, p. 959). In the Services of Heirs she is described as milliner, and a sister, Isabella, born 1765 {Glasgow Baptisms), is served heir to her, December 20, 1815. Isabella Buchanan, daughter of John Buchanan, hatter in Glasgow, was enrolled a pensioner of the Society in 1821, and died before Nov. 11, 1839. The Misses Buchanan, milliners, were at 92 Hutcheson Street in 1803 ; 9 Virginia Street, 1807 ; and 59 Queen Street, 1813 and 1815.

The Society made a grant to him January 18, 1793, three days before his death. Gaelic poet and astronomer. Had nine sons and three daughters. Of the seven sons who came to maturity, five were ministers of the Church of Scotland. The eldest son, Robert B. (330), succeeded George Jardine as Professor of Logic and Rhetoric in the University of Glasgow in 1827. His son, Thomas, after¬ wards minister of Logierate and Methven, was the Society’s Bursar in 1815. His youngest son, Hamilton, afterwards minister of Strathblane, was a candidate for the Bursary in 1819. See Strathblane, p. 225 and notes.

Neil Snodgrass, writer in Paisley, born about 1661, married, about 1690, Jean Buchanan, daughter of Robert Buchanan, fourth cadet of the family of Spittal, and died in 1718. Their only son was John Snodgrass of Cuninghamehead, writer in Edinburgh, who married, in 1737, Anne Nisbet, daughter of William Nisbet of the Dirleton family. The oldest son was Neil Snodgrass of Cuninghamehead, who married, in 1773, Marion Macneil, eldest daughter of James Macneil of Kilmorie, and had with other issue the above David (Paterson’s History of Ayr and Wigton, vol. iii. pp. 209, 210).
