Notes from the Artistic Director
Though the music we present at Early Music Vancouver comes from many different historical periods and cultures, the common thread of human expression and creativity can make music written from even our most distant past seem like it was written yesterday. All of the music on our 2016-17 season is designed to disarm and inspire you; if you open your ears, intellect, and spirit, it can be as powerful now as when it was first written. While I am fascinated by facts and history, I believe that live performance is the best tool we have for demonstrating that, though modes of artistic expression change, human nature remains the same.
This season sees a number of exciting collaborations, including our first exploration of contemporary music for period instruments as part of the Vancouver Symphony’s New Music Festival, two collaborations with Coastal Jazz, and the continuation of our close relationship with the Pacific Baroque Orchestra and Alexander Weimann for a number of large-scale Baroque Masterworks programmes featuring many of our region’s best artists. We are thrilled to be returning to Christ Church Cathedral for our first summer Festival centred downtown, as well as for much of our Main Series. The warm acoustics and stunning architectural beauty of the space are a perfect fit for much of the repertoire we present.
Seeing our attendance grow so dramatically over the last year has been extremely encouraging. It suggests that there will always be an audience for great music of any era performed by gifted and committed artists.
Thanks to José Verstappen for his help in gathering the charming images included in this calendar, and warmest thanks to you, our audience, volunteers, and closest supporters, for transforming EMV into one of the jewels of our region’s performing arts scene.
I look forward to seeing you at a concert soon,
Matthew White Executive and Artistic Director

Pacific Baroque Ensemble led by Alexander Weimannand Alan Matheson Septet
Two ensembles. Two starkly different genres. In this remarkable project, a baroque ensemble led by JUNO Award-winning harpsichordist/organist Alexander Weimann and a brilliant jazz septet led by trumpeter/composer Alan Matheson explore threads running from the 1600s through today’s creative jazz scene. Bringing together disparate musical communities, the two groups will perform works from their respective fields as well as pieces written for the “common ground” of both. In this timeless meeting place, the long melodic lines of Ellington and Strayhorn echo Handel and Bach, while the endlessly creative practice of “theme and variation” is a keystone of jazz improvisation, of the Baroque and, one could argue, of life. London’s famed viol consort are heard in a selection of the Cries of London, in which music for viol consort is overlaid – sometimes comically, sometimes poignantly – with the raucous voices of 16th-century London’s street-vendors, mendicants, tradesmen and river-taxis.
“A fascinating, beautifully played programme … Fretwork addressed all this music with an easy-going virtuosity. In variation sets, the principal lines moved smoothly and easily from one instrument to the next, and in chordal music, the players produced a well-tuned, fully balanced sound with a delightfully tangy character.”– The New York Times

Alexander Weimann leads five internationally-renowned soloists, a full baroque orchestra, 3 trumpets, and timpani in a performance of the original version of J.S. Bach’s Magnificat in E flat major.Written for Christmas Vespers in 1723, this version includes four rarely-heard and delightful inserts that illuminate the Nativity story. Join us for a fascinating new slant on a familiar masterpiece. The programme also includes Telemann’s Concerto for Three Trumpets in D major (twv 54) and Bach’s beloved Cantata “Wachet auf” (bwv 140).
“… an engaging blend of scholarship with honest sentiment plus all the bells and whistles that the early Baroque could muster in service of religious music. The result was nothing less than splendid, one of the best musical treats of the holiday season.”

“Lion playing vieille”, illumination from the Breviary of Renaud Marguerite de Bar (Metz, c. 1302-1305)
Le Mozart Noir – Symphonies by Chevalier St. Georges, Mozart and HaydnSaturday February 4, 2017 at 8:00 pm (6:30 documentary screening on the life of Chevalier St. Georges featuring Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra)Vancouver Playhouse (600 Hamilton Street at Dunsmuir)Pacific Baroque Orchestra | Alexander Weimann music directorMonica Huggett violin soloist
One of the greatest composers of the early classical period was Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. Known as ”Le Mozart Noir”, he was one of the earliest musicians of the European classical tradition to have African ancestry. Incredibly, this son of a slave overcame adversities of class, race and prejudice to become a major musical star all over Europe and inspired both Mozart and Haydn. Today, he is almost entirely forgotten. This programme includes several of his violin concertos, orchestral works by Mozart and one of Haydn’s Paris Symphonies. This concert will be preceded with a screening of a Canadian-made documentary on St. George’s life featuring Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra.

Hieronymous Bosch (c.1450-1516): “The Concert in the Egg” (1480, detail)
Stile Antico: In a Strange LandElizabethan Composers in ExileSunday March 5, 2017 at 2:00 pm Christ Church Cathedral (690 Burrard Street)
Queen Elizabeth I may not have wanted “to make windows into men’s souls”, but faced with threats at home and abroad, her regime dealt increasingly harshly with supporters of the old Catholic religion. Torn between obedience and conscience, several of England’s most talented musicians (Philips, Dering and Dowland) chose a life of exile abroad. Those Catholic composers who remained in England – chief amongst them William Byrd and Robert White – expressed their spiritual exile in music of astonishing intensity and emotional impact.
“Anything but antique… their sound has the urgency and freshness you get from young voices, and an amazing rhythmic vitality.” - The Daily Telegraph
The Choir of King’s College Cambridge Stephen Cleobury Director of MusicSunday March 26, 2017 at 2:00 pm Chan Centre for the Performing Arts (6265 Crescent Road, UBC campus)
The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge is undoubtedly one of the world’s best known choral groups; every Christmas Eve millions of people worldwide tune into A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, a service that has been broadcast by the BBC since 1928. While the Choir exists primarily to sing the daily services in King’s College Chapel, its international fame and reputation, enhanced by an extensive recording catalogue, has led to invitations to perform around the world.
“Moments of iridescence… creating vividness in restraint through the unadorned splendour of this superbly polished vocal sound.” – Sydney Morning Herald

Karina Gauvin with Les BoréadesWorks of Henry PurcellFriday April 21, 2017 at 7:30 pm Christ Church Cathedral (690 Burrard Street)
Canada’s very own superstar soprano Karina Gauvin has impressed audiences and critics the world over with her luscious timbre, profound musicality and wide vocal range. The Globe and Mail calls her “one of the dream sopranos of our time.” A regular collaborator with conductors as diverse as Dutoit, Nagano, Nézet-Séguin, Bichkov, Norrington, Hogwood, Rilling, Labadie, Rousset, Curtis and Haim, Karina is one of the most respected sopranos of her generation and a national treasure.
“At the very heart of Alcina, Karina Gauvin opens an abyss, transcending a hallucinating vibration and signs with this interpretation of the title role, the most deeply moving without any doubt, since Arleen Auger...” – Diapason
Vancouver Summer Early Music Programme & Festival 2017The Summer Courses and Concert Series of the Vancouver Early Music Programme and Festival 2017
start in the month of July and continue in August.
CONVERSIONS | TRANSFORMATIONS | METAMORPHOSISThe summer of 2017 will see the beginning of a one-year association between EMV and the “Early Modern Conversions Project”. This theme of conversions | transformations | metamorphosis will inform all of the programming choices on our 2017-18 Season. Our involvement will be closely connected to Green College at UBC as well as to a much larger-scale international initiative organized by the McGill Institute for the Public Life of Arts and Ideas (IPLAI), and funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation.
