Director’s Notes: New Hours, New Services

This is turning out to be a big year for WestlakePorter Public Library. It is perhaps fitting that some ofour biggest changes in a long time come in the year ofthe tenth anniversary of our building. Since 1884 thelibrary has been housed in four different buildings, andon July 23 we celebrated a decade in our currentedifice.

A significant change this year is to the library’shours of operation. Beginning on August 5 we will beopen every Sunday in August. Traditionally we havebeen closed on Sundays in the summer, but this yearwe will be opening a month sooner. The Board ofTrustees approved this change at their June meetingwith an eye toward being open on Sundays throughoutthe summer in 2013. In addition, Friday and Saturdayhours have been extended an extra hour to 6 p.mstarting on Friday, August 10.

In May we rolled out a new service by joiningSearchOhio and OhioLink. SearchOhio and OhioLink are

resource sharing consortiums that allow us to get youmaterials from public and academic libraries aroundOhio much easier and faster. If you search our catalogand can’t find what you need, a link is provided tothese new resources. Our staff is also available to helpyou try out this new service.

LibALERTS is another very cool innovation. Throughthis service you can be notified when we order the latest release from your favorite author, allowing youto place a hold right away.

I’m happy to report that on this ten-year anniver-sary of our current building and our 128th year ofcontinuous service that Westlake Porter Public Librarycontinues to fulfill the vision of Leonard G. Porter. Ihope you’ll enjoy the additional hours and terrific new services!

Westlake Porter Public Library’ssecond annual Science Week willtake place August 6-11. Sponsoredby the Friends of Porter PublicLibrary, Science Week is intendedto emphasize the importance of

science and technology in today’seconomy while encouraging peopleof all ages to expand their knowl-edge of scientific concepts andideas. Programs planned coversome of the S.T.E.M. (Science,

Technology, Engineering and Math)objectives included in the WestlakeCity Schools’ curriculum.

Here are the programs we’veplanned:

Now you can get holds placedon new books by your favoriteauthors sooner. The library hasintroduced a service calledLibALERTS that notifies libraryusers when the library has ordereda new book by their favoriteauthor(s).

Register for LibALERTS atwww.westlakelibrary.org/libalerts/and select the author(s) you wishto receive notifications about.Notifications will be sent to youre-mail account or cell phone, andcontain links you can follow to thecatalog to place holds.(Unfortunately, the system does notautomatically place a hold on thetitle.) There is a mobile version ofthe service which allows users toaccess it via their cell phones.

LibALERTS grew out of libraryusers’ requests for a way to findout when their favorite authorsrelease new books. Rather thanlook for a vendor to provide such a

service, Web Librarian Matt Weaverdeveloped LibALERTS himself usingDrupal, the open source softwarethe library’s other sites are builton, augmented with some customcode. While developing the pro-gram, he decided to go one betterby setting it up to notify patronswhen we order new books so thatthey may get holds placed sooner.

Anyone who opts to receivealerts on their cell phone via textmessage should be aware that mes-sage and data rates for your cellu-lar carrier apply. Due to restrictionsfrom the library’s carrier for textmessages, LibALERTS users canreceive a maximum of five alertsper month via text message, sovoracious readers should considerreceiving their notifications viae-mail.

Authors included in the servicesrepresent a variety of genres, bothfiction and non-fiction, and includepopular, best-selling luminaries likeJohn Grisham, Nora Roberts,Stephen King, and Janet Evanovich.

LibALERTS also includes young adultand childrens authors. If usersdon’t find a particular author, theycan submit it to the site and a staffmember will attach a subscriptionto the user’s account.

For more information about thisservice, including video tutorials,go to the “How it Works” page atwww.westlakelibrary.org/libalerts/?q=howitworks.
