A fraction is a proper fraction if it isless than 1. It is an improper fractionif it is greater than or equal to 1. Animproper fraction greater than 1 canbe rewritten as a mixed number.
Examples:To change 8/5 to a mixed number,divide 8 by 5, then write the remain-der over 5. Reduce the fraction ifnecessary. 8/5 = 1 3/5.
To change 3¾ to an improper fraction, multiply the whole number3 by the denominator 4, and then add the numerator 3. Finally, putthat number over 4, the originaldenominator. 3¾ = 15/4.
To write 3¾ as a decimal, write 3.and then change ¾ to a decimalBy dividing the numerator by the denominator. 3¾ = 3.75.
