Thank you for emphasising the importance of coming to school and ensuring their punctuality. Nan Chiau Primary is committed to nurturing future-ready leaders with values. Besides providing opportunities through school programmes to meet the school’s vision for our students, we want our students to be self-directed to take action too. At the first assembly talk for 2018, we set the tone with three vision words – Discover, Kindness and Care. Our teachers continued the conversation using these three words with their students in the classroom. We shared these same words with you too at the Principal’s briefing for all levels. Our hope is to gather the entire village’s support to help nurture confident children who are gracious citizens and active contributors. Kindness starts at home and in school, with words and actions. Let’s all be the role models for our children. As we will be celebrating Chinese New Year soon, everyone at Nan Chiau Primary wishes all our Chinese parents and students a Happy Lunar New Year!

This year, the Primary 6 students had an exhilarating 3days and 2 nights camp at the Outdoor AdventureLearning Centres (OLAC) located at Jalan Bahtera, offLim Chu Kang Road. In an idyllic setting unlike theurban surroundings of our school campus, the OLACexudes a rustic charm, facing the sea andencompassed by much greenery.

The students truly enjoyed themselves. They learnt todevelop their social and emotional competencies andhone their leadership skills as they interacted with oneanother while engaging in a range of activities like thehigh challenge course, rock climbing wall, abseilingand the zip-line tower. At the end of the camp, notonly were the students more confident and resilient, they were also more united as a class and as a level.

Handwritten letters are a novelty toour children who are immersed in thedigital age. Many of them have never received aletter via postal mail. 160 students from NaruwaJunior High School in the city of Kanazawashi, led bytheir teacher, Mr Tomonobu Tsuchida, initiated aletter writing exchange programme with our school. The Japanese students, aged 14 to 15 years, wroteletters that included a self-introduction and a shortintroduction of Kanazawa. Our Primary 5 studentswere elated to open the envelopes to read theseletters. They were eager to reply to their newfoundoverseas friends. With much thought and effort, theytoo crafted lovely letters. It is such a meaningful andauthentic activity as they communicate withstudents from another country and learn aboutanother country’s culture. We hope that this will bethe beginning of a beautiful friendship.

“Here in Japan, learning English is not easy because

we don’t have much opportunities to talk with

English speaking foreigners in our town.”

Mr Tomonobu Tsuchida

The pen pal writing activity is very exciting as I get to make a new friend.

I hope he will reply to me soon!

-Wong Wee Hern, 5KN

I was excited to find out more about Japan and my new pen pal. I hope that we can continue to write to each other

and become good friends in the process.
