Dear students,

THERE’S no better time to join the School of Business with SkillsFuture opening up new paths for you.

In line with the SkillsFuture national initiative, we are working hard to make polytechnic education more vibrant and relevant than before, and students can expect more structured internship opportunities and support such as career guidance.

This is “the next chapter of Singapore’s development as a nation”, the Ministry of Education said when it launched the ASPIRE initiative that led to SkillsFuture, and signals the country’s new emphasis on developing skills among all Singaporeans in looking beyond academic qualifications.

It’s what the School of Business has been doing for 25 years now, in offering an education that is Real, Relevant and Rewarding.

We have a broad range of courses designed to equip you with real skills and relevant knowledge to prepare you for your chosen career, in a rewarding environment providing a holistic education that’s not just about hitting the books.

The School of Business is as old as Temasek Polytechnic itself, as one of the first two schools launched in 1990, and the timing couldn’t have been better as we celebrated our Silver Jubilee during SG50 last year.

We invite you to be a part of the TP experience as we prepare you for a bright future.

There’s no better time to join us.

Wei Yang was disinterested in studying and he only enjoyed arts and music classes. It was

at his part-time sales job that he began to be intrigued by how marketing played a very important role in

conducting business. While studying in ITE, Wei Yang tried to include animation

and interactive elements into his presentations. He was brimming with ideas and wanted to make his projects stand out. He worked on scripts and storyboards, and even engaged videographers to execute them. But while the videographers were technically sound, they were unable to carry out his ideas fully because they did not understand the marketing concepts behind them.

Wei Yang enrolled into TP to study marketing and branding in greater depth. The senior student is also a partner at Art House Videos, a company that produces commercial and corporate videos.

Studying at the School of Business has helped polish the businessman in him. Wei Yang said he is using what he has learnt to grow his company.

“The knowledge and skills I’ve acquired in the Diploma in Marketing has helped me to understand my clients’ needs better. Because of that, I’m able to produce videos that add value to their business.”

You’re the president of tp-cd and spend a great deal of effort organising emergency preparedness courses for other tp students. Why are you passionate about spreading the knowledge of safety awareness?I feel that it’s important for everyone to know how to protect themselves and their loved ones. Knowing what to do during an emergency can make a difference, and being equipped with the right first aid skills can potentially save lives.as an eXco member, you also coordinate orientation programmes, community service projects and overseas community trips for your peers. What satisfaction do you get out of organising all these activities? It’s my passion and goal in life to give back to society and organising such events is merely an extension of what I love doing (i.e. helping others).

One recent example is the overseas community trip to Bintan where we built sewage systems for the villagers. Knowing I’ve made a difference is extremely motivating. You participated in a private tea session with pm lee recently. how was the experience like?I was genuinely very excited and felt very privileged to be given the chance to meet him in person. it certainly looks like you’ve made the best out of your poly years. do you have any advice for your juniors?Aim to graduate a better individual than you once were – with knowledge, skills, friendships and memories that will accompany you for the rest of your life.

Participate in activities which are enriching and can contribute to the community. Seize opportunities to get to know more people, and ultimately know yourself better. Do not be afraid to try something new and move beyond your comfort zone!

BUSINESS SENSETan Wei Yang had many marketing ideas but did not have the knowledge or skills to execute them. Currently a Diploma in Marketing (MKg) senior student, he is learning how to turn his ideas into reality.

As President of the Temasek Polytechnic Civil Defense (TP-CD) Lionhearters Club and EXCO member for the Logistics & Operations Management (LOM) Interest group, Lew Jia Yun is making a difference to lives through the various programmes she organises. Her commitments notwithstanding, the 19-year-old maintains a perfect 4.0 CgPA and has even sipped tea with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

CULTURAL

IMMERSION

It’s no surprise to see a mix of salons, pet shops and hardware stores seated alongside each other in the neighbourhood of mature towns. You’d expect the same in Bedok ... but not until you see the FATCAT Ice Cream Bar.

Warm lights emitting from tasteful glass windows, a wooden bench perched on the corridor and a chalkboard easel set with promises, this ice cream bar is one you can’t miss. Walking through the black framed doors is no different — you’ll find a fascinating world of palatable visual arts.

Tan Yichao, a Diploma in Culinary & Catering Management graduate, is the brain behind FATCAT’s mind-blowing ice cream flavours and one-of-a-kind plated desserts, and he shares with us his motivations and how his creations won the affection of heartlanders.

Crowned second runner-up in the National Climbing Championship 2015 Women’s Open Speed category, Zhang Bin Bin added this latest achievement into her growing list of accolades. She is now part of the national team representing Singapore in upcoming international competitions.

While some may feel overwhelmed by the amount of time and energy required to handle both their studies and interests, it was through conscious deliberation that helped Bin Bin sail through her poly years.

“I was clear about what I wanted. I knew which competitions I should focus on, which to forgo and which assignments to give my all. More importantly, I knew that whatever I do or don’t do, it would have a positive impact on my future,” she said.

The lithe climber also put much of what she had learnt from her diploma to good use. In fact, the production house at which she was an intern, is her current workplace.

“CMM has taught me both the hard and soft skills which I think are relevant to this industry. I went for the interview; got the internship role, and then I went back to school, graduated and got the job.”

So how does she juggle work commitments and rock climbing now?

“Working at PixelMusica gives me a lot of flexibility to manage my time and productivity. So while I get my work projects done, I have ample time to train for the upcoming competitions. I’ve been enjoying every second of my time here and I couldn’t ask for any better.”

SEA games, World Youth Championship, Asian Youth Championship and the National Schools Championship series — Diploma in Communications & Media Management (CMM) graduate Zhang Bin Bin has conquered them all. Focused and goal oriented, the avid rock climber is scaling heights (quite literally) in both the sport and her career.

DYNAMIC CCA DEVELOPMENT

Hi Yichao, do share with us how FATCAT started out.My sister and I noticed a gap in the industry — no one was making artisanal ice cream. So we thought we could bring something into the whole ice cream scene.Tell us more about your food. Which is the most popular dish? From sourcing of organic ingredients to exploring modern cooking techniques, we take pride in creating unique flavours from scratch. Research & development is very important to us and we’re constantly exploring new ideas. The best selling item is our charcoal waffle with salted egg yolk sauce and the mojito lime sphere. How does the School of Business help graduates like yourself in the real world? My diploma gives you an overview of the F&B industry. It gets you in the kitchen, and opens your eyes to the service line. You’ll get to experience actual interactions with guests — be it students or the public, and have a better understanding of what will entail as the curriculum covers all areas.

Even though there’s a certain stereotype that people who do technical cooking will not be the most successful ones, so long as you pursue your interest with passion, there’re plenty of opportunities ahead. Is there a reason why you chose to be at the heartlands?Over here, the rent is lower so we like the idea of transferring the cost savings into procuring top quality ingredients. The location makes us stand out, and it’s family-oriented too -—everyone loves ice cream!FATCAT is a pretty whimsical name for an ice cream bar. How did you come up with it?FAT is synonymous with us using generous ingredients and amplifying the richness of natural flavours with our cooking techniques. CAT represents sophistication, curiosity and playfulness. The combination of both captures who we are.

A&F students can now enrol in the ACCA Accelerated Pathway Programme (AAPP) which allows them to begin their ACCA papers even before graduation.

Besides enjoying conditional exemptions from five ACCA Fundamentals Level papers, eight of our graduating A&F students also received awards comprising fee waivers and course fees discounts under the AAPP.

One of the graduates, Kelly Chua, passed all three papers she sat for. Kelly commented, “With a flexible schedule, the AAPP provides independent-learning for students and allows them to choose the number of papers they wish to take in an exam sitting. To excel, the key is to attend classes regularly and revise consistently.”

Upon successful completion of the ACCA Fundamentals Level papers, students will obtain an ACCA-Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) Advanced Diploma in Accounting and Business to complement the diploma.

TP collaborates with stock broking house UOB Kay Hian to promote realism of the trading game.

Seinor students from A&F and Diploma in Business (BUS) are equipped with hands-on skills to analyse stocks, manage portfolio risk and measure portfolio performance through the Security Analysis and Portfolio Management (SAPM) module.

An extension of the partnership gave students the opportunity to participate in UOB Kay Hian Singapore Inter-Polytechnic Real-time Investment & Trading (USPRINT) Game held from 6 July to 6 August 2015. The top two traders from TP, being SAPM students, reflect the rigour and relevance of knowledge and skills learnt in the subject. Kudos to Tan Jun Wei who was the best TP trader and also the first runner-up amongst 1,800 participants from participating polytechnics!

FINANCIAL HEADSTART

Fighter. Overcomer. Survivor. Through the years, these are some of the many labels Shalom Lim has been given for overcoming his challenges. While Shalom, who suffers from a progressively degenerative muscle disease known as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, feels humbled by these titles, he attributes his victories to the people around him.

how did you decide to take the plunge and become an entrepreneur? It actually just happened after a random conversation with Jerome. We decided to think seriously about what we wanted to do with our lives and dived in with much at stake!

I couldn’t see myself in a regular desk-bound job and Jerome wanted to venture into F&B. This, together with my background in HTM where I learnt quite a great deal about the service line, gave us the direction. What did you learn at the school of Business which you could apply in real life?Studying at HTM was really enjoyable and the outgoing school culture helped imbue me with interpersonal skills. I had awesome lecturers who were very good role models with lots of experiences to share, which we can’t learn from books. What advice would you give to graduates hoping to strike it out like you guys did? It’s a misconception that you need a degree to succeed. What’s more important is that you be true to yourself, do what you like with passion, and you’ll excel.Set short- and long-terms goals for yourself and make sure you achieve them. A successful business is all about handling conflicts, taking chances, and a little bit of luck. Also, the customer is always right!

Nestled in a corner of Icon Village in Tanjong Pagar is Two Men Bagel House, where the crew keep busy in the open kitchen but never fail to greet customers.

Making patrons feel at home is just as important as serving up good food for the co-founders, Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) graduate Jereborne Lam and professionally-trained chef Jerome Lam (no, they’re not siblings).

Although his diploma was in hospitality and tourism, Jereborne never felt like his career options were limited. In fact, the School of Business expanded his horizons and helped prepare him for entrepreneurship, Jereborne explained over a cup of coffee.

GROOMING FOR SUCCESS

6

“I was able to do so only with the love and support of my parents and helpers,” he shares, also citing his family members as his greatest inspirations.

The O-Level 8-pointer from Victoria School came to TP to pursue a Diploma in Business. While his condition did not make schooling easy for him (he lost his ability to write in Year 1), Shalom managed to defy his personal limitations and graduate with a 3.81 CGPA. For his achievements, he was presented the 2015 Ngee Ann Kongsi Most Outstanding Overcomer Award that commends resilience and academic excellence.

Shalom has enrolled into the Singapore Institute of Technology to study Criminology and Security. Motivated by his desire to have a deeper understanding of society, he hopes to be an influencer of good and an advocate for social justice.

Shalom also has another aspiration. He wants to be a teacher.

“At the School of Business, I’ve had the privilege of meeting some excellent people among the teaching staff. They came alongside me and made a difference in my life. I’m deeply impressed by them and would like to touch the lives of future generations the way I’ve been inspired. From their example, I’ve learnt how to be compassionate and proactive in helping those in need,” he said.

Calling it a “fruitful journey”, he reckons his time at TP has moulded him into the young adult he is today.

“My experience at TP has enabled me to know more clearly what my strengths and weakness are. I feel that this is where I’ve matured: by learning how to overcome my greatest challenges.”

INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT

Despite their hectic teaching schedules, some full-time lecturers still keep themselves up to speed with their industries through part-time or freelance work.

Take for instance Mrs Felica Nah, Mr Ignatius Teo and Ms Lilian Khoo of the Communications & Media Management (CMM) diploma.

Lilian Khoo and Felicia Nah are part-time deejays with local radio stations Capital 95.8FM and 938LIVE, respectively. While radio hosting is part of their commitment, their work also involves programme production, voice-overs and conducting corporate workshops.

HANDS-ON LECTURERS

These lecturers are passionate about their second jobs. While it’s an added responsibility, they say their industrial experience helps with their classroom teaching. Being aware of the current job market dynamics, they are able to incorporate the latest trends and practices in the curriculum.

Fellow lecturer Ignatius Teo agreed and added: “Being involved in real world work allows me to stay in touch with the latest broadcasting trends and processes. These updates are useful as the experience and knowledge gained can be imparted to the students taking TV production modules. I get to share with them how classroom theories play out in real life.”

A 15-year veteran in the TV broadcast industry, Ignatius specialises in producing multi-sport events like the Olympics and SEA Games. He rides on the adrenaline rush that comes from working on ‘live’ productions.

Likewise, Lilian relishes the dynamism of the media industry.“It gives me the chance to speak formal Mandarin which

I hardly get to do,” she enthused.

School of Business graduates bring more than valuable career skills with them into the workforce, with their ties formed on campus growing into valuable professional networks.

And the LAW network is especially strong as the diploma is the only one amongst Singapore’s polytechnics to prepare its graduates for successful careers in the legal industry or law school.

In fact, the LAW alumni forms the backbone of the Legal Aid Bureau (LAB). Seven graduates, who received their diplomas between 1997 and 2003, work at the LAB which is run by the MInistry of Law.

“Our shared school background, was a starting point to a solid working relationship,” said Noor Omairah Bte Azahari, who graduated with a law diploma in 2013.

Seven Diploma in Law & Management (LAW) graduates are now working alongside each other at the Legal Aid Bureau (LAB).

LEGAL NETWORK

Did you know that Australia was the first country to forge diplomatic ties with Singapore when we gained independence in 1965? To celebrate the longstanding partnership as well as SG50, ACM organised a series of fun and contemporary activities last May that included public art, puppetry performances and mass BBQs.

Tasked to be roving Student Photographers (SPs) and Social Media Ambassadors (SMAs), CMM freshmen and junior students got to experience the thrill of being media professionals. Dashing from venue to venue, they were assigned to cover the fringe activities within the heartlands. While the SPs went around with their cameras, the SMAs were conducting on-the-spot interviews and cajoling sound bites out of those in attendance. Handling their jobs with aplomb, the resourceful students even scored exclusive interviews with Ministers Lawrence Wong and S. Iswaran.

Diploma in Communications & Media Management (CMM) students were at the heart of all the action at the Australian High Commission (ACM) 50 Bridges event.

JOURNEY OF TRAINING

Do you cycle? When you have to change lanes, how do you

communicate your intentions to the person behind?A quick guess is that you would lift your hands off the

handlebar to gesture your move to the left or right. But Team Scalar, comprising BSG Diploma students Anuar and Cherie, felt this technique leaves cyclists vulnerable on the road. At this year’s YES organised by NTUC Youth Wing, nEbO, they had to convince a panel of judges that their “Left Right Light” (LRL) device was the answer to safer riding.

“Hand signals are pretty tricky,” said Cherie. “They can cause cyclists to lose their balance. Also, it might not be the clearest indication to other road users especially when it’s dark and visibility is poor.”

“LRL is designed to allow cyclists to communicate their intention to turn, slow down or stop with a switch on the handlebar,” she added.

Their idea eventually won them a cash prize of $1,000, a trophy and a mentorship.

Their experience at YES has only added to the entrepreneurial knowledge they have gained from their diploma. Sharing some words of wisdom, Anuar said: “In this world, 80% of people would probably say that your ideas won’t work. But, there’s still a 20% chance that it might. Focus on that 20% and make the best out of it.”

Anuar Hassan and Cherie Lim Hui Shi from the Business Studies grouping (BSg) beat more than 80 teams nationwide to emerge champions at the Youth Entrepreneurship Symposium (YES) 2015.

KNOWLEDGE APPLICATION

Said one student: “50 Bridges has been an amazing experience! We were challenged to think on our feet while covering the events, and again when we had to quickly produce and publish content afterwards. This journey has definitely prepared us for the media industry.”

For alumnus Teong Feng Ming who graduated from the Diploma in Logistics & Operations Management (LOM), this 12-month structured training programme which includes on the job training, and facilitated e-learning (with 120 hours of company-based projects) is nothing less than fruitful. Since May 2015, Feng Ming has been with Toll Global Logistics as a Logistics Executive. She is currently on rotational learning to understand the different roles and responsibilities within the company.

As a full-time staff, she enjoys employee benefits the company offers. Feng Ming is eligible for the Specialist Diploma in Supply Chain Management, and can receive sign-on incentives and a competitive starting salary at the end of the programme.

SkillsFuture Earn & Learn is a work-study programme designed to give fresh Polytechnic and ITE graduates a headstart in careers related to their studies. It provides them with more opportunities to build on the skills and knowledge they acquired in school, and to better support their transition into the workforce.

OPERATIONAL KNOW-HOW

TP reaches out to secondary school students through various ways — one of which is holding workshops to give them a taste of the different subjects and modules being taught here. In March 2015, HSCS Infocomm Club students spent half a day at TP to learn about data analytics through the SAP Lumira Workshop. Junior students of the Diploma in Business Information Technology (BIT) were given the chance to lead the workshop, and had previously undergone a two-day “Train-the-Trainer” program to learn about the software and Design Thinking Facilitation skills.

Students from Hai Sing Catholic School (HSCS) learnt to perform data analysis at the SAP Lumira Workshop conducted by School of Business students.

NEW TECHNOLOGY EXPOSURE

Marking her 20th year of graduation from the Diploma in Marketing, Irene Tan has made her grand return to the School of Business in 2015. With 19 years of experience under her belt, she is back to impart her knowledge as a lecturer.

MENTORSHIP

A 1995 graduate, Irene had scored a degree sponsorship from employer Global Yellow Pages in 2001, and graduated with a double major in Marketing and Advertising two years later.

It was her dedication and positive attitude that helped Irene excel in her career. Coupled with a diverse background in Telecommunications, Digital Media, Online Search Directory, eCommerce and Personal Computer products, she held key roles in major corporations and companies.

During her career, Irene spearheaded the development of marketing strategies, boosted revenue growth and advanced in the internet and digital media industry. She also created headlines for SingTel with her key achievement of launching the SingTel 4G mobile broadband service in 2011.

Passionate about sharing her marketing experiences and nurturing young marketers to lead and shape the future of marketing, Irene hopes to be an influential role model to her students. She encourages them to strive towards greater excellence through knowledge, application and experience in their poly education.

Chew Wanting from the Diploma in Retail Management (RMT) appreciates that with SkillsFuture Earn and Learn, she can now acquire knowledge and relevant work experiences in just 18 months, all the while still studying. In fact, within the first couple of months, Wanting has already gained much insight thanks to the detailed and comprehensive training provided by retailer Charles & Keith.

As a Customer Service Fashion Associate, she has been tasked to look into the company’s service standards. Earn & Learn offers her a good head start upon graduation and sets her in the ‘express lane’ of her learning journey.

The top five to 10 students will spend their first seven weeks in the sales department before attaching themselves to a retail business department of their choice for another next three weeks; allowing themselves to build relevant skills while being exposed to the inside workings of one of the world’s most successful retail operations.

Course manager for RMT, Mr Samuel Tan, also said he hoped the course would show the professional and exciting side of retail, “more than just folding clothes and selling things – it is very professional, very exciting.”

For Lee Chuan Jie, a second-year RMT student, he expressed his yearning to learn more about furnishing retail, “which requires a higher level of service as compared to other sectors.”

Following a signed Memorandum Of Understanding between the School of Business and IKEA in June 2015, RMT students will get hands-on experience with the home furnishings retail giant as part of their course.

RETAIL MASTERCLASSES

What have you gained through your internship at gold 90.5 Fm?I managed to go on air, control the console live, meet celebrities and do work that improved my technical and design skills. It was an eye opener, and it showed me the ropes of the industry and what went on behind the scenes of a radio station. I also discovered what was necessary to succeed.

The opportunities that I received during internship was beyond what I could have imagined! And I think the biggest impact that it had on me was that I learnt a lot of life skills from the different people I worked with and who shared their life experiences with me. I am confident that these intangible skills are the things that will stay with me long after I have graduated. What did juggling studies, performing in the tp 25th anniversary musical and running the tp dance ensemble teach you?It taught me to get rid of my procrastinating habits, and be more focused whenever I needed my tasks to be completed. “There is a time for fun and there is a time for work” was a phrase that kept me in check. I would be focused on my studies whenever I had to study; and when I was dancing or performing, I would be fully focused on what I was doing. What is life in the school of Business like?Life here is a roller coaster ride, filled with incredible highs doing modules you enjoy with the friends you meet in the course, and also with the lows of stresses and deadlines. But at the end of the day, it has been an incredible and unforgettable experience.

Diploma in Communications & Media Management (CMM) senior student Samuel-Roy Supramaniam managed to juggle internship, studies and school projects with his passion for dance and performance.

QUALITYEXPERIENCES

12 13

Attending networking sessions, meeting influential industry players, interning at acclaimed agencies before graduation… these are on the wish list of many aspiring to gain a foothold into the world of public relations. For a number of Diplomas in Business (BUS), Communication & Media Management (CMM) and Marketing (MKG) students, these have been translated to reality with the formation of the IPRS Student Chapter.

Established in July 2012, the collaboration between IPRS and TP aims to equip the new generation of communicators with an understanding of the industry. Through this partnership, students are provided with purpose-filled experiences through lunchtime talks, media visits, awards ceremonies and networking events. Involvement in campaigns (“Love Yourself”) and corporate social responsibility events (“Bright Vision Charity Walk”) also allow students to experience various aspects of communications.

Furthermore, the Chapter’s unique mentorship scheme gives students opportunities to be mentored by industry practitioners from agencies like Golin, Tate Anzur and PRecious Communications.

The Chapter also provides valuable leads for students looking to land internships. Phillson Rajan, former Chapter President, secured his internship with top PR agency Weber Shandwick through networking.

“It was a dream come true to meet with the who’s who in the industry. As a student, it’s something I would never have been able to do alone,” said Phillson.

From internships to mentorships, the birth of the Institute of Public Relations of Singapore (IPRS) Student Chapter is giving students a headstart in the communications industry.

Following formal discussions in 2004 between the Diploma of Communications & Media Management (CMM) of TP’s School of Business, and UWA’s Faculty of Arts, the TP-UWA exchange programme was established. To date, 170 students from CMM and 200 students from UWA have taken part in the study exchange.

“Celebrating the University of Western Australia – Temasek Polytechnic Partnership — 10 Years & Beyond” is also a renewal of ties between both institutions. Highlights of the event included student sharings by Sarah Ison from UWA and Dazale Choy, a TP CMM senior, and a video montage showcasing reflections of previous cohorts of UWA students. Mementos between UWA and TP were exchanged on the same day.

Gracing the commemorative occasion was guest of honour, His Excellency, Mr Phillip Green, Australian High Commissioner for Singapore and Professor Krishna Sen Dean of UWA’s Faculty of Arts, Programme Coordinator. Deputy Principal Mr Edmond Khoo, School of Business Director Mr Daniel Yeow, and deputy directors from the School of Business were also in attendance.

Some 100 guests, senior staff and students gathered in February 2015 to celebrate the 10-year partnership between the University of Western Australia (UWA) and TP.

PATA is the leading authority for the development of Asia Pacific’s travel and tourism industry. It provides leadership and advocacy to the collective efforts of nearly 100 government, state and city tourism bodies and over 55 airlines and cruise lines.

In 2015, HTM acquired the PATA Singapore Student Chapter mantle. Together with the official launch of the Temasek Tourism Academy (TTA), this establishment of the student chapter will position TP at the forefront of hospitality and tourism education.

Students will find themselves learning from industry experts through site visits to various hotels and attractions, overseas exchange programmes, networking sessions and industry talks. Not only will they benefit from these industry connections, they can hone and develop their leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Offering Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) students invaluable insights into the travel industry, the new Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Singapore TP Student Chapter was officially launched in September 2015.

TOURISM INROADS

They say that charity begins at home. A&F IG embarked on a mission to help the less fortunate

through an eco-conscious initiative titled “Rings for Life” from May to September 2015. The Community Involvement Project (CIP) saw the involvement of the entire A&F cohort, where students were responsible for collecting used ring tabs from aluminium cans. Initially challenged to collect 10,000 ring tabs, they quickly surpassed the target from the publicity and support garnered through the clever use of social media.

Gloria Lai, A&F IG Vice-President who was in charge of the project, said: “When we started Rings for Life, we weren’t sure if we could reach our initial goal. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise, to receive the ring tabs by the thousands almost every week!”

Through their collective efforts, the students were able to double the total number of tabs to 20,000. The tabs were later donated to the Prostheses Foundation of H.R.H. The Princess Mother, Thailand, and recycled into prosthetic limbs for amputees. These prostheses are given out free to those in need regardless of nationality or religion. The project had been deeply rewarding in many ways! Not only did it promote camaraderie amongst the A&F students, it also instilled in them a sense of responsibility towards the community and the environment.

The Accounting & Finance Interest group (A&F Ig) collected more than 20,000 ring tabs and recycled them into artificial limbs for underprivileged amputees.

WORK ABROAD

You’ve mentioned that emotions are what inspire you to cook. is that what separates a good chef from a great one?Every dish, every ingredient holds a different meaning to different people. If you cook with your heart and soul, it’ll reflect in that dish. I believe that’s how you use your food to connect with people. Someday, I hope that I’ll be able to evoke memories and stir emotions through my food.Your prize for winning was a trip to France. has that experience given you better insights into the culinary world?Oh yes, the trip to France was really eye-opening! Chef Sebastien from Les Amis brought us to dine at different establishments (i.e. simple bistro and brasserie, classical fine-dining, contemporary fine-dining) and we observed how they were run.

From this trip, I’ve learnt that food alone does not complete the whole dining experience. An affordable place with simple but good food might be better than a more expensive place with complex dishes.

Service also plays an important part in enhancing a diner’s experience. As our Diploma also provides us with service training, it was amazing to see that what we’ve learnt in school is being practiced in the industry.do you think ccm has prepared you well for the industry? All the subjects that were taught are definitely valuable. It’s relevant to the outside world, and we’ll use the skills eventually. Amongst others, we were taught how to prepare food, how to run a kitchen, how to dress right and how to be a professional. CCM has provided us with an all-rounded knowledge that’s necessary for the working world.

There’s a star in the midst of CMM’s 260-plus cohort, but nobody bats an eyelid. It suits freshman Jermaine Leong just fine.

Jermaine was crowned winner of MediaCorp TV’s reality singing competition The Final in October 2015, earning a Hype Records recording and artiste management contract and a S$50,000 prize.

Simply put, she has the X-factor.Back on campus and away from her screaming fans,

however, Jermaine looks a little embarrassed by hearty congratulations from schoolmates in the School of Business concourse. While she’s happy being a stand-out performer, she’s happy just hanging out with her classmates and working on her next assignment.

“Honestly speaking, I get really shy when it comes to titles,” Jermaine told campus newspaper Stop Press.

Enrolling in CMM was a natural choice for Jermaine, who turned 17 in December.

“Media is so important when it comes to any career, especially music as it is involved with the media on so many platforms,” she said.

Her advice to anyone unsure about whether to pursue their passion?

“It is true when they say that you’ll never know until you try,” she mused. “So just go do whatever your heart desires.”

What is that special ingredient separating a good chef from a great one? Winner of the 2015 Les Amis Awards Culinary Challenge and Diploma in Culinary & Catering Management (CCM) student Poh Zhe Kai spills the beans.

Hey Zhe Kai, let’s talk about Les Amis. The finalists prepared the same dish but yours impressed the judges. how did you come up with the winning recipe? The recipes were a collaborative effort between my teammates and our chef instructors. With only one week to prepare for the finals, we incorporated our chefs’ experiences into the recipes and referred to books to understand the traditional methods of cooking them. I think the whole process was a team effort. Without their input, I wouldn’t have been able to win the challenge. how has ccm helped you along the journey of becoming a better chef?Studying in CCM has helped me understand the various food cultures and history, cooking techniques and also taught me a substantial amount about food and ingredients — knowledge that a good chef should possess. Plus the

opportunity to take part in competitions has improved my techniques and added to my knowledge.

Students from the School of Business get to put what

they’ve learnt in the classroom to use in the real world

through internships, major projects and participation

in major events.

For Diplomas in Leisure & Events Management

(LEM) and Communications & Media Management

(CMM) students, for instance, getting behind the scenes

of the SEA games was an invaluable chance to learn

first-hand about how the regional sporting event is run.

Dear future student,

Congratulations on entering the next exciting phase of your life Amid the relief and excitement, I’m sure you would also have queries about what your next step might be. The conventional is only deemed so by our society. Listen to your heart and ask yourself what truly inspires you, because it will no longer be a job or work, if we do what we love!

I was blessed to be part of TP’s Culinary & Catering Management (CCM) family. It has been the most enriching and memorable phase of my life to date, and future students like yourself can expect nothing less! Like me, you’ll be fully prepared for the industry upon graduation thanks to the balance of theory and practical exposure. What’s more, there’ll always be further opportunities presented to better yourself. I’ve had the privilege of representing CCM at various culinary competitions and those opportunities have shaped me into a better chef.

In the School of Business, you will be supported by remarkably humble lecturers and instructors; it was truly a blessing to have been shaped and nurtured by them. I remember once when my peers and I were

Both athletic and intelligent, Shermaine epitomises the meaning of an all-rounder. Not only does she excel academically (she was on the Directors’ List, was granted several scholarships, and qualified for the Diploma Plus programme), she also happens to be a national basketball player.

But luck has nothing to do with her accomplishments. Optimistic and disciplined, Shermaine juggled her responsibilities with dexterity during her three years in TP. As the TP Women’s basketball team captain, she led her girls to win a historic first-ever Polytechnic-ITE gold medal in 2013 and 2014. During her reign, the team also clinched one bronze and two silver medals at the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic Games.

At the same time, she was playing in the National youth basketball team, and subsequently in the National Senior Women’s basketball squad. Last year, she represented Singapore in the 28th SEA Games against Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines.

Basketball may be her life, but Shermaine prioritises her studies above all else. The Diploma in Business (BUS) alumnus graduated with a 3.87 GPA, and is furthering her studies at the Nanyang Technological University. For her ability to balance her studies and sports, she won the Lee Kong Chian Award for All-Round Excellence in 2015, proving that with dedication, it is possible to have it all.

Up-and-coming chef Lisa Tang is now studying at the Culinary Institute of America after graduating from the Diploma in Culinary & Catering Management (CCM) in 2015. She writes an open letter to you, the future student of the School of Business, and tells you about the exciting times ahead.

good with studies? Check! good at sports? Check! Is there anything at all which Shermaine See can’t do?

ZEST FOR LIFE

training for the Les Amis Culinary Challenge, our competition Chef Trainter actually stayed past midnight with us and even cleaned alongside with us - not because he needed to, but because he wanted to. Trust me, there will be exhausting and stressful times where you’ll have to juggle everything at once. But going through tough times with people you admire and doing what truly inspires you outweighs any other challenges you’ll face along the way!

My own culinary journey has not ended even after graduation as numerous other doors were opened thereafter! With the desire to give back to our society, my peers and I organised a charity dinner - TrueBites Charity Dinner 2015 “Inspiring Locals with a Heart” — with the support of CCM. Similarly, your own visions can be made possible with this family.

All in all, you and I are without doubt blessed to be surrounded by numerous education choices in Singapore, but I’ve found that perhaps the best way is to let the beauty of what you love, be what you do. I wish you all the best.

Sincerely,Lisa

“The Overseas Community Project (Cambodia) opened my eyes and made me realise how fortunate I am. De-spite living in poverty, the children there seem so happy all the time. It goes to show that happiness lies in simplic-ity. Personally, it was the children who had brought me the most joy during the trip. Their smiles and laughter nev-er failed to warm my heart.”

“I’m getting old and sweeping is tiring, but I enjoy taking a break by drinking coffee with my friends here.”

“ What I love most about the School of Business is the peo-ple you get to meet. People are so friendly and you get to meet many different people that will teach you to be more open minded and it makes coming to school more fulfilling. I feel that LEM has taught me to be more outgo-ing and socialise more with others. We are taught to be open with others and I feel that this lesson is also a life skill. It was exciting and interesting to learn about how peo-ple of different races live their lives and how they view certain things during my overseas study trip in Australia. I had also learnt that I had so much more to learn from the other tourism industries which LEM had given me the opportunity for.”

“I admire the graciousness of people in Germany espe-cially for their forest preservation works. Through the over-seas study trip with my diploma, I learned that as long as you put in effort together as a community, you will be able to make a huge difference.”

“I love the people here, it’s really lively and I’m glad to be recognised as a School of Business student. I have ben-efited a lot from the hospitality & tourism sector through my course, and my interest in this subject is definitely still growing. Our teachers also taught us how to build up our character, and be strong as a person mentally, emotionally and all other aspects. We had a first hand experience in spa & wellness before everyone else and the effort my teachers put in to make the Bintan study trip possible did not come to nought. It was a great ex-posure! I feel that business students are more versatile in terms of thinking, like instead of a step-by-step approach, they adopt many viewpoints and apply them according-ly. We are also more receptive of ideas and suggestions.”

“Being selected for regional advertising festival Spikes Asia 2015’s Young Creative Academy was a huge priv-ilege. I got to meet so many talented individuals from around the Asia Pacific region which was a huge eye opener. The speakers at the festival were extremely inspi-rational and the Creative energy in the room was con-tagious. I have learnt so much more than I would have imagined. My greatest takeaway is to ‘Inspire and be inspired’.”

“My family and I moved to Singapore in 2012. Having only been in Singapore for a little over two years, the first month in TP was a challenge. I found it difficult to adapt to the education system and the polytechnic environment be-cause in Russia, the education structure focuses largely on individual work and little on group projects. With good peers and tutors, I began to enjoy group discussions more and learnt to apply teamwork in sports (I’m hooked on volleyball) in the classroom.”
