2152.—Abbreviated Titles and other Abbreviations in Common Use(M. 0449/43.—27 Apr. 1944.)

The following list of abbreviations has been prepared as an aid to the understanding of naval communications and may be used in substitution of Appendix I I to Signalling Instructions, P art I. I t does not aim a t containing all abbreviations in use, and certain categories, e.g., Admiralty Departments and titles, have been deliberately excluded. This list is not to be regarded as containing abbreviations authorized for use in signals on any occasion, and in view of its limitations, the abbreviations used in signalling are not restricted to those contained therein. Attention is drawn to A.F.O. 6295/43, and to the desirability of not using in signals or letters any abbreviation which is unlikely to be readily understood by the recipients.

2. Numerous abbreviations in use in the U.S. Navy have been included and are . indicated, where the fact is not otherwise obvious, by the addition of U.S. in

brackets. Many of these are common to both British and U.S. Services.3. Naval authorities may, if they desire, forward for consideration amendments

or additions. These should be addressed to the Secretary of the Admiralty (M. Branch), Whitehall, S.W.l.

4. The present list is not to be regarded as superseding any former lists of short titles, which retain their validity. Any contradictions should however be brought to notice as in the preceding paragraph.
