the whole group, who were not only enjoying what they were doing, but were having a great time encouraging and supporting others in their musical and performance endeavours. That they were doing this in wooden huts in some of the worst weather we have experienced did in no way dampen their enthusiasm or commitment, although probably did cost the camp a significant amount of firewood. It was a humbling and affirming experience, and such a joy to witness the talent, courage and enthusiasm of our students and staff.

Community Based Health ProjectUnder the strong and persistent leadership of Cherry Chan in Year 12, and a committed band of other students, our CBHP group has been running a number of small fundraising events and awareness raising activities during the past few years.

This project came about as the result of an approach by a group of young medical students from Melbourne University and the Nossal Institute of Global Health, who thought that, since we shared a relationship and name with Sir Gus, we could be working together for the benefit of the broader community.

This is an impressive group of young people, most of who are now in their first placements as qualified doctors in the Australian Health system. They are excellent role

models for our students and have followed a similar pathway to that sought by many of our students. Most impressively these young people care deeply about making a bigger contribution to world health, so have been working with a very inspirational doctor from India to support him with the outstanding work he has instigated in some of the very poor and rural villages in central India. We were privileged to meet and share morning tea with Doctor Moses Kharat (the founder and instigator of this project) and Dr Bharat Ramakrishnan (one of the original Nossal Institute students who came to meet with us originally to help develop a partnership).

Dr Moses was brought up in a very poor village in India and was one of the ‘untouchable’ caste. Following the death of his grandfather (due to non-existent health services, support or knowledge) he was inspired to complete his education and work as a doctor. With strong support from his parents, he did so, completing his medical training in New Zealand where he could have remained to become well paid and comfortable while working as a Medical Doctor. Instead he chose to return to his home village and set up a growing health and education program, that is now expanding to other villages and is having startling success. The program is addressing huge and challenging, medical, health and community issues from within the community, by educating and supporting the members of the community to make a difference. He draws no wage, works seven days a week, all year, and is making a huge difference to the lives of many. He presented us with some very confronting statistics and images of life in these small rural villages where there is extreme poverty, ignorance, malnutrition, and situations and circumstances that we found quite horrifying and very moving. It really did open our eyes to the privileged environment and lifestyle we enjoy here. He was most appreciative of the support of the Nossal community and the medical students, as it gave him both financial and moral encouragement to continue with his excellent work.

We were greatly inspired by the work and attitude of this very talented, but humble and self-effacing man and wish to further support and build this project where we can. The Nossal High School student team were very enthused and have been making plans to find creative ways to fundraise for the project. Some of the suggestions we have been toying with involve raising funds to help Dr Moses purchase buffalo to provide sustainable nutrition (milk) for the villages (about $1000 each); directly sponsoring the education of village children (at $120 each child per year) or donating funds to help build a school (currently their school is a wooden shelter, smaller than our classrooms) and goods such as school materials (for the students to use at school). We also hope to actually visit the villages and assist in the program, as the medical students do, in the longer term.

Cherry and her team will generate ideas and activities to help us to help him; I think this is an enormously inspirational program, and one that we should become more heavily involved in as a school community. Stay tuned for more information.

Coming Events• Thank you to all who have sold and purchased raffle

tickets – we are doing well, but still have quite a number of books remaining and only one week left before they need to be returned. Please take some more if you are able so we don’t have to send many (if any) back, and to assist your House to gain some points (Pegasus and Phoenix in particular!).

• Please book your tickets for the PFA Trivia night. We still have a few spots to fill and it will be an excellent night. I am very keen to see the Science team lose their crown this year, so come along and help us to defeat them.

Please remember to send any auction donation items in too – goods or services would be much appreciated. If you are unable to attend the actual event you may assuage your guilt by donating a prize for the evening.

• Please also book your tickets to High School Musical – it too promises to be a most enjoyable event, and the staff and students have been working really hard during the holidays – please support them by making the show a sell-out.

Welcome back to Term 3I hope everyone is feeling rested and rejuvenated from their break over the holidays. I spent 8 days in Thailand, with mostly perfect weather, even though it was their rainy season. It was lovely to spend some time doing nothing other than reading, swimming and catching up with a few friends who were also there at the same time. I was pleased to talk to some of the Year 12 students earlier in the week who told me they had had a great rest over the holidays and that they were ready to embrace the four and a half months until the end of their final exams.

Student ReportsWe completed our second round of student reports at the end of Term 2 and we are very pleased with the way the new reports have taken shape. Over the next fortnight, staff will be talking one on one about reports with the students they still teach in semester two. These discussions about the similarities and differences between their ratings will yield further information for students and help them to see where they can make even further progress in the future.

At the end of Term 3 there will be a further progress reports and our second Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences. These will be held on Thursday 17 (2.00 - 8.30 pm) and Friday 18 September (9.00 – 2.00 pm). Bookings will be made via Compass at the same time as reports are released on Thursday 10 September.

Careers and Pathways Expo We look forward to seeing parents and students at the Careers and Pathways Expo next week on Wednesday 22 July. We have an extensive list of Universities attending as well as guest speakers from a range of professions and members of the Alumni. There will be tea/coffee and snack foods available for purchase from the kitchenette near the lecture theatre, and more substantial food offerings available for purchase from the canteen. This evening is the formal beginning to our annual Course Selection process for 2016.

Course Counselling DayThe following week, Wednesday 29 July we have our Course Counselling Day. There are no scheduled classes on this day. Each student will be expected to attend an appointment with their parents/guardians (it is not essential for Year 11s moving into Year 12 to have their parents with them). Information about booking appointments on Compass will soon be sent out to parents. All students and parents should be consulting the Senior School Handbook and Year 10s and 11s their Morrisby Reports to assist them to make decisions about which subjects they wish to study in 2016 (and beyond).

Congratulations We are pleased and impressed with Rebekah Papp in Year 12, who recently sat her Grade 8 Piano Exam and achieved an A.  This is an outstanding result considering the work load of Year 12s.

Assistant Principal News Continued...

Let me introduce myself...In this my, first Nossal Newsletter, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Keith Butler and I am the newly appointed Assistant Principal. It is early days for me as a member of the school community, but already I am pleased to say I feel very welcome and excited by the opportunities that lay ahead. I have been pleased to greet and be greeted by students and staff as I have moved around the campus during this week.

I come to Nossal with over 20 years of experience in an Assistant Principal role in two very different schools. One was a very large, diverse secondary college, the other a smaller school with a range of different challenges. In each case however, the features or nature of the institution were irrelevant because the core purpose was to provide an educational environment where students could achieve their personal best. I see my role at Nossal in the same light. I am a facilitator and role model, working with teachers and education support staff to ensure that our students have the best

possible learning environment we can provide, one where they can grow and excel.

A school community also comprises parents and the wider community. Another key part of my previous experience has been to engage with these groups and work towards the provision of a stimulating learning community. This is the aspect of my work that I am looking forward to further developing at Nossal.

This week I was fortunate to attend to some important events that took place at Nossal. Our Year 9s took part in being “Aboriginal for a Day” while the Year 11s participated in the “Fit to Drive” program. Not only were both programs informative and engaging, for me it was an opportunity to see how well Nossal students participate in this type of important event that helps in the development of the whole person.

Aboriginal for a DayYear 9s took part in sessions led by Alan (Big Al), an elder from the Noongar tribe of Western Australia, and his two sons, Tristian (Pancakes) and Azlan (Aza). Students participated in workshops on traditional aboriginal art, dreamtime stories and history as well as dance. Big Al told the students his tribe comes from the Margret River District of WA and that the history of his people is recorded in a very large and well-hidden cave. The record in the cave dates back many hundreds of years and continues to grow even now with the elders gathering every two years to record the latest events in the history of the tribe. Big Al explained to us that because of his and his sons’ attendance at Nossal High School this week, the record of the visit will be perpetuated with it being added to the tribe’s evolving history. The program concluded with a celebration of what had been learned during the day including presentations of dances about the waitch (emu), bunjil (eagle), karda (goanna) and marloo (kangaroo).

Fit to DriveThe Year 11s took part in the very relevant “Fit to Drive” program. Like the Year 9s, the presentation involved

both group sessions and smaller workshops. Students actively participated in discussions about safe driving practices and were challenged to look at and think about their own experiences in cars especially in relation to what they thought were both “Low Risk” and “High Risk” distractions. The program included a presentation by members of the Victoria Police who further emphasised the importance of awareness of potential distractions while driving. A clear example they highlighted was the presence of mobile phones in cars. The audience was told that it is now common practice for the police to acquire the telephone records of any driver involved in an accident to check whether there was any activity on the phone at the time of the accident and if there was, how that would automatically change the outcome when related to potential charges against a driver. The importance of seat belts, blood alcohol levels and the number of passengers in “P-Plated cars”, drowsy drivers and hoon drivers were other topics covered during the presentation. The ‘Fit to Drive’ program is extremely relevant and valuable for Year 11 students and I congratulate those who took part.

Thank you for the welcome I have received. I look forward to meeting more members of the Nossal High School community over the coming days and weeks.

Course Counselling Day for students in Years 9, 10 and 11 is on Wednesday 29th July from 8am to 8pm. This is a pupil free day; students only need to attend for their scheduled appointment. Bookings for this day will open on Compass at 9am on Monday 20th July and close at midnight on Monday 27th July.

Aboriginal For a DayOn Wednesday July 15 the Year 9 students were involved in a ‘Cultural Infusion’ program called “Aboriginal for a Day”. The students were entertained by stories from Alan (Big Al), taught to dance by Azlan (Aza) and taught to draw by Tristian (Pancakes).

It was a very educational day and also highly enjoyable. The students were supported by the Arts teachers Ms Stoppa, Ms Cilia and Ms Crust.

The highlight of the day was the closing ceremony where Pancakes played the didgeridoo and Aza painted up and danced. Several of the Nossal students also joined in show casing the dances that they had learned during the day: the eagle, the kangaroo, the emu and (everyone’s favourite) the goanna!

English CompetitionYear 9 students will all participate in the UNSW ICAS (University of New South Wales International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) English Competition at school on Tuesday July 28.

The competition requires students to read and respond to various extracts of different types, testing their reading comprehension and their understanding of the function of written language in a range of contexts. The questions are multiple choice, and the competition will take an hour to complete.

ICAS has run competitions of this style in schools for more than thirty years; ICAS awards High Distinctions to the top 1% of students; Distinctions to the next 10% of students and Credits to the next 25% of students.

The competition allows students an excellent opportunity to develop and hone their reading comprehension skills, in a test situation, invaluable practice for their ongoing study of English.

Briony SchroorDomain Leader English

Plain English Speaking Award FinalsOn June 19, Maatharan Maheswaran participated in the semi-finals of one of the most prestigious competitions in Victoria; the VCAA Plain English Speaking Award, which encourages students from government, Catholic and independent schools to speak to their peers from other schools on topics they are passionate about.

The competition consists of one prepared speech lasting for 4 minutes on a topic of the contestants’ choosing, and an impromptu speech lasting for 3 minutes on a set topic, with 4 minutes of intensive planning.

Maatharan’s prepared speech on ‘the power of conflict

on human interaction’ consternated the audience, with the overarching portrayal of conflict not being a thing of strife but of empowerment being embedded in an analogy and visual imagery of the popular game of chess.

He demonstrated the three virtues of universal harmony, self-development, understanding and knowledge being able to be attained when the three types of conflict, internal conflict, conflict of beliefs and conflict between relationships are overcome. These conflicts were depicted through the rooks, the queen and king, and with each conquering of each conflict in the “game of war,” a virtue is achieved, and the opponent is put in check. Inevitably, if all virtues are accomplished, the opponent is put in checkmate, the game of war is won and conflict is surmounted.

After a short break, it was time for the impromptu speech’s and the revelation of the contestants’ topic; ‘Think Big’. This is exactly what Maatharan did, captivating the audience with an hourglass analogy, that each and every one of us are minute grains of sand tumbling through time, and through the act of coming together and thinking big, we grains of sand have the capacity to accomplish great things. He further concluded by saying that without thinking big and putting our thoughts “on the table”, time will continue to march on, and we will never be able to be more than simply grains of sand.

It was time for the adjudicators’ decision, and we were all on the edges of our seats. It was one of the hardest decision’s they made that day, and certainly not one any of us watching could make. And although Maatharan did not advance to the final round, we would like to congratulate him on an incredible effort in representing our school and the City of Casey.

SEN Debating TournamentWhat do you get when you put the best speakers of the best schools in the state all in one room? Some pretty interesting debates. And that’s exactly what went down on Tuesday June 23, when Nossal’s two Year 9 debating teams, along with the debating captains and some senior debaters, made their way to Melbourne High to participate in the first ever Selective Entry Schools Debating Tournament. The tournament was organised and run by Melbourne High students, and in which students from Melbourne High, MacRobertson Girls, Suzanne Cory and Nossal High participated.

After weeks of intense preparation, which included lots of missed lunchtimes and the occasional English class, we put all that hard work into action. It was a day full of challenging, increasingly difficult debates, some of which we won, others which we didn’t, but nonetheless, it was a great opportunity for us to receive crucial advice and gain tips on how to improve on not just our debating, but our public speaking as well. The Year 9 debaters, particularly, had a lot to gain out of this experience. It was also a great chance to meet other students from the other schools. We made many friends and had lots of fun, despite the rivalry.

In the end, Nossal did not come first, but Cree, one of our Year 10 debaters, was awarded Best Speaker overall,

out of all the speakers from all four schools. Furthermore, her team remained the only undefeated team out of the 12 that competed. Nevertheless, everyone put up an amazing effort to do the best they could.

All in all, the day, and the competition, was a massive success, and we all had lots of fun, got to meet so many more people, and improved our public speaking skills greatly.

Japanese News - Japanese Events at NossalApril 22 & June 4: Years 9 through 10 students trip to Japan, in MelbourneOn April 22 Students in Year 9 Advanced Japanese and year 10 Japanese and on June 4th Beginners year 9 Japanese students experienced a Day in Japan- In Melbourne, with Ms Warner, Mr Bramley and Ms Chappel.

Students were rotated through activities in Melbourne including: a Tour (race) around Melbourne’s Japanese Food and Cultural outlets, a one hour talk at the Consulate General of Japan (which is actually Japan) on Life in Modern Japan and using Japanese as a global citizen, and a Tour of the Japanese art and artefacts at the National Gallery of Victoria. Students were split into three groups and rotated through these activities. We had a Japanese lunch Bentou or Teishoku at Chocolate Buddha Japanese restaurant. This was an unforgettable and unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in Japanese language and culture in Melbourne and give them insight into local places they can revisit to learn and engage more with the study of Japanese.

Ms Warner

The Japanese Excursion

It was wonderful to see our Year 9 and 10 Japanese language students collaborate together and plan for this special excursion. Our main aim was to provide opportunities for students to reflect on cultural differences between Japanese and English-language communicative styles and on how these affect intercultural interactions. Through programs such as this, Language Day and the upcoming Bushido exhibition, our students are actively encouraged to develop new ways of seeing and being in the world. Visiting the Consulate General was also a rare chance for

us to experience a medical robot called Harpo the Fur Seal in action. In addition, going to the Kimono Shop, the Daiso Department Store and The Pauline Gandel Gallery of Japanese Art at the NGV were opportunities for us to prepare mentally to host our first Chosei High School students in August, as well as a chance to explore just one part of the rich splendor of Asian culture and cuisine found throughout Melbourne. Eating our bento packed lunches was definitely a fun time, as we explored Japanese meal manner and etiquette in a real world setting.

Mr. Bramley

“I was one of the lucky students to go on the Japanese excursion. I was in Bramley-sensei’s group, and our first stop was the Japanese consulate. There, we learnt about Japan’s exciting culture through informative videos showing various Japanese festivals and cities. After, we went to Daiso which is similar to a dollar shop, except it had absolutely everything! From gardening tools to かわいい stationery, Daiso was an experience not to be missed. Our group then travelled to the Kimono House, a shop which sold beautiful materials, crafts and kimonos. We then met up with all the other groups at the Chocolate Buddha, a Japanese restaurant with delicious food! I had a beef teishoku, which was amazing. Our final destination of the day was the National Gallery of Victoria, where we admired the Japanese artwork in the Japanese exhibition. Overall, the day was eventful and fun, I definitely recommend to go if you have the opportunity.” Jasmin O

Although the constant walking may have been tiring, the visits to the Japanese Consulate and to the exhibition centre made the experience well worth it. The explanation on Japanese culture and customs coupled with historical insight of Japan using artefacts from many different time periods allowed us to appreciate Japan that much more. However, the questions given to us to answer during the time in the exhibition centre were a little difficult to answer in the allotted time and also not all the information was available for us to fill in the sheet of questions. Overall, the experience was worthwhile and enjoyable.

During the Japanese excursion around Melbourne, I was given the opportunity to hold a PARO robot after winning a quiz at the Japanese consulate. A PARO is a robotic baby harp seal, designed to be very cute as it needed to have a therapeutic effect on the people who use it. We were taught that it is commonly bought for hospitals and nursing homes, as well as for elderly who are isolated from others, as a companion as well as for a type of therapy. It is designed as a harp seal, rather than

a dog or cat, as it would seem more realistic to people, as harp seals are not animals you see often. It responds to its name, and its tails and fins move excitedly when it is being pet. I was able to hold and pet the PARO at the Japanese consulate. PAROs can be given names by their owners, and the one at the Japanese consulate was named Harpo. It was a little heavy and its fur was very soft. While the speaker at the Japanese consulate was explaining what Harpo was and what it did, I petted its fur. It was very cute and holding it was a wonderful experience.

Languages Day 2015Japanese students were treated to an amazing day of Japanese cultural and martial arts. The day began with a welcome assembly with our Natasha Aulia introducing Wadaiko Rindo and the students enjoyed a stirring performance and workshops in traditional drumming. Then students rotated through 5 additional events; Ikebana – where they learned the traditional art of flower arrangement and made beautiful flower arrangements in the upright and slanting style with Roses and greenery, Sumie and shodou- where they learned to use ink and brush to create characters and pictures on Japanese paper, Manga-where they learned to create fun characters in comic style, Kendou- where they learned to fight with bamboo sticks in the style of training Samurai and some very special students (10 French and 10 Japanese) were dressed in the traditional Summer Kimono-called Yukata.

French students were also very lucky to be able to join the Japanese students and share the art of Tea Ceremony

with Master Adam Wojcinski who speaks fluent French and Japanese and currently practices Tea Ceremony while living in Paris and travelling to Japan and around the world.

Natasha Aulia gave the following welcome speech:

Hello everyone , it’s a pleasure for me to welcome you all to Nossal High School’s language day !

It is no doubt that NOSSAL is a school full of cultural diversity and it’s absolutely great to see that we are promoting the spirit of language and the impact it has on our lives.

Although today we are focusing on the language and culture of Japan and France specifically, all languages are empowering. Its a great skill to have- a skill that can take you many places and hopefully today will give you an insight into the culture of the language that you currently learn at school.

In the future, we are planning to expand Language Day into Multicultural Day- a day which embraces all nationalities from all around the world. I’ll leave someone else to talk about the specifics of that later on, but for now, please sit back and relax. We have a very special Japanese drumming performance for you all. Please give a warm round of applause to Wadaiko !!

LANGUAGES DAY FEEDBACKCongratulations on the successful Language Day. You must be so tired but so happy. Thank you for the opportunity. I enjoyed the day with your students. Special thanks go to the fantastic helpers, Hiro & Jay. They helped me to run the workshop easier and smoothly.

Chieko Yazaki (Ikebana Instructor)

I just wanted to let you know I had one of the best teaching days in my life as a teacher. I had so much fun and enjoyment plus, learning from the presenters. I was working with the Year 901 students who were fantastic in their behaviour and respect to the presenters and, the tasks they were demonstrating. They participated with

enthusiasm and enjoyment. You and your staff should be proud of such lovely students to have at Nossal.

My thanks go out to both Rohan and Shelly for giving me the opportunity to help alongside them. I wish there could be more days like to day.

Telsa (Volunteer Teacher at Nossal)

Best event for me: Tea ceremony

How it was run: It was really well, because all the activities were fun and interesting to do. We had more variety of things to learn.

Improvements for next year: Maybe the activity time should be a bit longer.

It would be wonderful if we can try out things like tea ceremony ourselves.

Sarah

This year, Language Day was quite fun and interesting. My favourite activity of Language Day would probably be the manga class. It was a really enjoyable session as the teacher explained how certain features of the character described their personality. For e.g. a more

angular face is quite macho and could be portrayed as evil meanwhile a softer face shape are quite feminine. A session I found the most interesting was the tea ceremony. This session explained the significance of tea and why it is an important aspect of the Japanese culture.  The session on kendo was also quite cool but I had hoped we had more time.

Reshma

The Language Day yesterday was very interesting.

I got to learn so much cultural and historical information about Japan like the samurais and how they effected the growth of the tea ceremony, hopefully next time we are able to all participate in a tea ceremony and are able to learn about the tea ceremony in further detail.

Alicia

Language Day was very insightful, I got some pretty interesting tips from the manga lesson and I only wish that we could all have swung bamboo swords during the kendo lesson. The taiko drumming was a great way to start off the day. Not just through listening but we could literally feel the drums. Overall very exciting and at this point in time I’m not sure of any suggestions.
