Advancing NMCsstrategic directions

Lie at NMC, as on most campuses,

has a regular rhythm. But mixed into

the everyday grind o taking and

teaching classes, homework and the

hunt or a parking space, some special

projects are underway.

Undertaken as part o NMCs

recently-adopted strategic directions,

these projects are happening in

classrooms, laboratories, oces and

o-campus. Teyre engaging tra-

ditional and non-traditional NMC

students, aculty and sta. And theyre

sharing a commitment to NMCs

recently-adopted strategic directions.

Here we spotlight three projectsthat advance one o those directions:

Establishing national and international

competencies in select areas (see p. 2)

connected to the regional economy.

Hybrid Dune Buggy

Pull the engine out o a oyota

Prius, drop it into the rame o a

dune buggy, and what do you get?

A road-worthy vehicle that allows

students to install, test and observehybrid systems in preparation or

careers in the automotive industrys

ast-growing hybrid sector.

Under the direction o instructor

David Bajema, the work-in-progress

buggy eventually will allow students

to install and test the electric battery

pack, computers and associated wiring

under actual driving conditions.

Besides establishing NMCs competencyin renewable energy and the entrepre-neurial angle Bajema believes the buggyis a rst-o-its-kind vehicle the projectalso aligns with the strategic goal otranscribing learning into credentials.

Tis vehicle and its technology appeal toourstudents,Bajemasaid.Itsbecomeacarrot, motivating them to sign up or theprerequisite classes needed or the hybridelectric vehicle class.

Predictions are or 35 percent o vehiclestobehybridby2014,Bajemasaid.Tanks to the dune buggy project,his students will have an edge in thejob market to service those vehicles.

New Jobs Training Actagreements

By2015,twoTraverseCitymanufac- turers will create nearly 50 new jobsbetween them, thanks to trainingavailable at NMC.

Inthelastsixmonths,thecollegesignedagreementstoprovidetrainingfor13employees at Electro-Optics echnology,Inc.,whichsuppliescomponentsanddiagnostic equipment or manuacturersand users o high power laser systems, and35atCenturyInc.,whichmanufacturesprecision steel components.

Te agreements take advantage o astatewide program that works as aregional economic development tool.

Community colleges oer training thatenables companies to expand and createnew jobs that pay well. raining costs arepaid by a diversion o the payroll taxesgenerated by the new jobs.

NMC has long been committed toworking with local employers to diversiyand improve the economy and workorcein the Grand raverse area, said Margue-rite Cotto, vice president or Lielong andProessional Learning at NMC. Tanks

Patrick H. Symons, law enorcement, 2009,

Nicole Gorton, NMC 2000, GVSU-UniversityCenter 2004, is a 2011 recipient o the Kohl

McCormick Early Childhood Teaching Awardor her work as special education preschool/

Linda Root, RNC, Nursing, 1975 has been

LaMott, Wol named NMCs 2011 Outstanding Alumni

Breast cancer advocate and NMC retireeRuthAnnLaMottandartistGlennWolaretherecipientsofNMCs2011Outstanding Alumnus award.

Createdin1988,theawardrecognizesalumnior proessional achievement, community andproessional leadership or donations o time,talent and resources to NMC.

LaMott, o raverse City, attended NMC in1965-66andhastakennon-creditclassescontinuouslyeversince.Sheworkedatthecollegeasaninternandbeganherprofessionalcareerin1974.Cumulativelysheworkedformore

than30yearsatNMC,retiringin2009astheocemanagerinthe Humanities Academic Area.

A breast cancer survivor, LaMott is best known in the raverseCity community or her 25 years o advocacy and support orwomen diagnosed and treated or the disease. LaMott has beenrecognized with many local and national awards or her work,which ranges rom personal to public roles. On the personalend, she serves as and trains other Navigators to work one-on-one with newly-diagnosed women. On the public end, sheco-chaired the undraising committee or Munson MedicalCentersSmithFamilyBreastHealthclinic.Openedin2008,

the clinic oers state-o-the art digital mammography.

Wol, also o raverse City, earned hisassociateofartsdegreein1973andwentontoearnaBFAfromtheMinneapolisCollege o Art and Design. Known or histableaux style comprised o a central imagesurrounded by borders and insets, Wolinitially worked as an illustrator, contribut-ing to publications including Te New YorkTimes,SportsIllustrated,SportsAeldandAudubon magazine.

Wol now ocuses on ne art. His commissioned workappearsintheStateeatreindowntownTraverseCityand

the collections o institutions including NMCs DennosMuseum Center, Munson Medical Center, the University oWisconsinArboretum,theInternationalCraneFoundation,theInlandSeasEducationAssociationandtheCentralPark(New York City) Conservancy.

Pro bono clients have included the Dennos, the raverse AreaArts Council, Northern Michigan Environmental ActionCouncil,WingsofWonder,theMichiganLandUseInstituteandtheGrandTraverseRegionalLandConservancy.

Wol is also a bass player who perorms locally with theNeptune Quartet.
