Norwell Arts and MusicNorwell Arts and MusicNorwell Arts and MusicNorwell Arts and Music The NHS Music Department is putting the finishing touches on a successful
year. On the heels of the April 28th Spring Concert, the Chorus performed this past
week at the Council on Aging, while, earlier in May, students from the Jazz Ensem-
ble performed at the first two nights of the 55th Annual Art Show at Second Parish
in Hingham. Students participated in performances at Fine Arts Fest and Gradua-
tion .
Also, fourteen NHS Jazz students traveled to New York City this past weekend to
attend the finals of Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington competition,
where they saw performances by three of the top high school jazz bands from
across the country and by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, featuring renowned
trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. While in the city, they also visited the NYU Music
Technology program's spring semester open house, to learn about some of the cut-
ting edge work being done to incorporate technology into music performance and
research.
We'd like to thank everyone--especially those who have helped behind the scenes--
who made this year possible, and we're excited about things to come!
The math team had an amazing year. After winning their fourth consecutive division champi-
onship, the team advanced to the SMML playoffs and then to the state invitational meet in
Shrewsbury, where they finished seventh out of fifteen schools. This was the first time in
school history that the math team reached the state level. This year Norwell placed first in
Plymouth County for NEML. A new competition was introduced this year called Log 1.
Norwell placed sixth in region 3 and Peter McDonald and Kevin Luo were honored for their
individual results. Graham van Goffrier and Peter McDonald both advanced in national math
competitions. Norwell also received a charter for Mu Alpha Theta, a national math honor soci-
ety and inducted eleven charter members.

The Halyard editors put together a beautiful magazine that contains the poetry and artwork of over forty students. The
staff had the opportunity to attend a journalism conference at Boston University where the publication received a highest
achievement rating from the New England Scholastic Press Association. The 2011 Halyard is still available for five dol-
lars.

This year the NHS Latin Club tie-dyed togas as a way of bringing some
extra color and excitement to the annual Saturnalia celebration. Forty
five students participated in the December festival which included
sacrificing a lamb (cake), banqueting, exchanging gifts, and playing
Fructus. Many members of the Latin Club were able to travel to Italy
over April vacation as part of the High School’s trip to Italy. The Latin
Club concluded the year by organizing Latin Fest which is a series of
games and contests such as gladiatorial combat, the three-headed race,
and of course Fructus. Also congratulations to our Latin Scholars who
won the following awards: Liam Dennigan, silver medal, Latin I;
Michael Bevilacqual, cum laude certificate, Latin V; Kitt Miller, gold
medal, Latin V; Nathan Kingston, cum laude certificate, Latin VI; Corbin
Foucart, magna cum laude certificate, Latin VI. Thank you to Jim
Whelton, Latin teacher for arranging the Italy trip and advising the Latin
Club.

The Norwell Navigator, the school newspaper, published its fourth issue of the year recently. The lead article was about the two school trips over spring break: the Latin students to Italy and the Spanish students to Spain,
with a two-page photo spread. Four editors (Julia Kirslis, Kanika Rajiv, Tiffany D'Souza, and Katie Joseph) and faculty
advisor Tim Hanke attended a conference for student journalists at Boston University on May 6.
This year the Fourth Wall Players have continued to bring outstanding performances to the high school stage. In the winter season, the Fourth Wall
Players competed at the Massachusetts State Drama Guild Festival with the
play Five Down, One Across. The actors made it to the semi-final round and
the cast achieved six all star acting awards. The festival play was also accom-
panied by two student directed plays: the comical Mistress of Wholesome
Directed by VyVy Lareson and Babel in Arms directed by Molly Broderick.
The spring season has been dedicated to a Monologue Night in which the ac-
tors have been perfecting monologues in the absence of Chris Lacy. Thank
you to Mr. Jason Ward who stepped in this spring for Mr. Lacy. This year the
Fourth Wall Players will be saying good-bye to some of the most talented
actors on the high school stage as well as inducting graduates: Conor Kane,
Elysia Ridner and Patrick Kelly into the Fourth Wall Players Hall of Fame.

The "Our Towns" installation was greeted with great interest and enthusiasm by observers both before and during the Cohasset Festival weekend. We were delighted to receive a great write-up by Bob Knox in the Globe South section of the Globe last Thursday and another wonderful article appeared in the Cohasset Mariner. We were also the topic of the "Around New England" feature on WBZ Radio last Sat. a.m. Our sponsor, Rockland Trust Bank, was so enthusiastic about the installation that they've asked if some of the Norwell canvases can be displayed in their branches this summer.

This past month the student government of the junior class was reconfigured after
going through annual elections. The resulting student government for the 2011-2012 season is a
strong group that has already accomplished a lot. The new student government helped set up and
direct graduation on Saturday the 4th, and at the recent student government meeting, picked up the
mantle as the leaders of the organization. The themes for next year's Spirit Week, and Homecom-
ing have been chosen, leaving all grades pleased. There was a bake sale on Saturday the 11th out-
side of Stop and Shop in order to raise money for next year. We were all sad to say goodbye to this
year's seniors, but we have high hopes for next year, and the upcoming freshmen.

GSA/diversity had a very strong end to the year. April 15 was the annual Day Of
Silence; this year 85 students participated. On May 14, four students attended Youth
Pride in Boston, which featured informational booths from local nonprofits and live
entertainment from Kiss 108 and a local taiko drumming ensemble. On May 18, we
began a new tradition with a vegetarian pot luck dinner held at the school.
Our freshmen year is coming to a close. We wrapped up this year with our freshman movie night on June 10th. This was a night for the entire class to relax and spend some quality time together before the year ended. This year has been a great one and we are sad to see it end. We hope everyone has a great summer and we will see everyone next year! Sincerely, The Class of 2014 Katie Maguire, Secretary

The sophomore class has big plans for this upcoming month and we would like to
continue our ideas into the summer. We know we have to start thinking about prom
soon and to start our preparation. We want prom to be better than ever, so we plan on
having some great fundraisers to make this happen. Last year we were able to hold a
bake sale outside the cafeteria during the week of finals. This was very successful and
our peers liked this as well, however we are unable to do that this year. But we plan
on moving to the bake sale to other local places. We would like to host bake sales
outside super markets or youth sporting events. We also plan on hosting a movie
night sometime in the month of June. We know as juniors that we have a big respon-
sibility in student government and we look forward to the upcoming year.
The Environment Club is helping to launch
PuraVitaH2O at Norwell High School. The
Energy and the Environment class strung the
plastic water bottles, deposited in the recycling
binds, and hung them outside the cafeteria to see
how much plastic we consume each day. Both
the class and the club are hoping
to encourage more NHS students to bring their
own water bottle to school and refill with either
the bubbler or
PuraVita water.
