Northern Lights• Norway is far north.• In the winter in the northern parts of Norway
the sun never rises. It is cold and dark all day!• But sometimes you can see the Northern
Lights!

Midnight Sun• In the summer in the northern parts of
Norway the sun never sets. It is bright and sometimes sunny all day and all night!
• Because the sun may shine at midnight it is called the Midnight Sun.

• Oil was discovered under the ocean floor of the North Sea. Big oil platforms drill for oil, and the oil is transported in pipelines to land where it is refined and sold.
• Norway has become a rich, but expensivecountry.

Famous Norwegians• Roald Amundsen(1872-1928) was
the first person to reach the South Pole, in 1911.
• He used dog sledsto reach the pole.
• Edvard Munch (1863-1944) is Norway’s most famous painter. He painted “The Scream”.

Sports• Most kids play football (soccer). But winter sports
like skiing and hockey are also very big.
• And the Norwegian women have been World Champions in both handball and soccer.

Norwegian people
• Norwegians truly love nature, their mountains,, forests and sea . It is very popular to own a simple, wooden cottage (called hytte) in the mountains, sometimes in very remote places, even without electricity and running water.
• Many people cross-country ski.

Brunost (Brown cheese)
• is a “national treasure” and is loved by old and young alike
• it is made from goat’s milk which is boiled for hours until most of the water has evaporated and the sugars have caramelised.
• Brunost is always served using a cheese slicer.

The Viking Age
• Between the years 800 and 1100 the Vikings lived in Norway and in other Northern countries.
• They were famous for sailing huge distances and raiding and plundering people in other countries.
• But they also traded with people from other countries.

Vikings on sea
• The Vikings were very good sailors. They built boats that were very long and narrow.
• They were called longships or dragonships, because they had giant wood carvings of dragons.
• Each longboat could carry over 100 people.• They were sailing vessel, but also had oars,
which made it easier to navigate.

Viking discoveries
• Norwegian vikings sailed to England, Scotland, Ireland, Iceland and Greenland.
• Around 500 years before Christopher Columbus ‘discovered’ the American continent, Vikings had visited its shores, landing in what is now Canada in around AD 1000.

Helmets with horns?
• Many people think of the Vikings as always wearing big helmets with horns. Actually, there was only one Viking helmet found in Norway, and it didn't have any horns.

Viking Longhouses
• Viking homes were long rectangular buildings. Often one end of the longhouse was used as a barn.
• Country homes throughout the Viking World range from 30-60m long by 5m wide.

Inside of a Longhouse
• There weren’t any beds in an average Viking Longhouse. People would sleep wrapped in furs on benches which were attached to the walls of the dwelling.
• A fireplace would be somewhere in the middle of the floor.

Viking weapons• The Vikings were greatly feared
for their strength and skill in battles.
• They mostly used swords, axes and shields.
