It has been a busy year for

PWNPWDC this year. We

had a grooming seminar,

a water workshop to

teach those new to water

work and a one day trial,

a supported entry for con-

formation, a two

day water trial with a

practice day for volun-

teers, a picnic and don't

forget the upcoming Holi-

day party - date and time

will be announced on the

website.

The new slate of officers

for next year will

be introduced at the

Holiday party so come

and meet them. You will

also have some input into

the next year's schedule of

events- tell us what you

would like to see happen-

ing with our club. Come

and volunteer to learn

about any of these tasks

and meet other PWD

owners and those who

compete with their dogs

in agility, obedience, con-

formation, water work

and other venues. If you

are interested in learning

about activities with your

PWD this is a great club

with members who do it

ALL!

I would also like to give

HUGE THANK YOU to

all the volunteers who

have done a GREAT job

of putting together all the

wonderful activi-

ties PNWPWDC put on

this year. Without these

volunteers these activities

wouldn't happen.

Thanks for giving me the

opportunity of being the

past president and I hope

to see you out and about

with your dogs.

Catalogues are full of

nifty holiday gifts,

but this one's super cute!

It’s an authentic L.L.

Bean 8" high canvas boat

tote, with red canvas han-

dles.

Inside: a flexible

treat holder shaped like a

green Christmas light

bulb--too funny!

and plush red squeaky

balls embroidered

“Naughty" and “Nice".

Also in there: a Euro car

sticker ( paw print) and

small sack of peanut but-

ter treats. The press re-

lease says the toys are

recyclable but those puff

balls will not hold up with

a puppy!

Probably a wee bit over-

priced at $29.95 but

it's a classy gift from a

quality house.

See it

at www.llbean.com or

It’s Team Spirit ! by Suzanne Malick

the scene for our per-

formance.

The basic concept of team

obedience is to perform

the exercises in the best

synchronization possi-

ble. Exercises are heel on

lead, figure eight (lots of

posts!), group stand for

exam, heel free, drop on

recall and a sit stay and

down stay. We were

hanging in there pretty

well through the stand for

exam, although several of

the dogs got a little con-

fused about who they

were heeling with

(Decker thought perhaps

he should heel on Barb’s

right instead of CJ’s left,

if you can envision

it…). The heel off-lead

seemed quite a bit more

“free” than usual from my

standpoint and it took

quite a bit of extra verbal

encouragement to keep

Chili where she be-

longed. Our drop on re-

call, always the hardest

team exercise, was really

quite good. Unfortu-

nately, by the time we got

to ‘stays’, the dogs had

decided that they were

done cooperating for the

day and two of our dogs

broke their stays.

Our team took second

place to the “beach boys”

team, but we enjoyed

ourselves im-

mensely. The teams gen-

erated so much enthusi-

asm and enjoyment that I

think we were all winners

in the end.

idea of doing a team this

year, but Lauri was kind

enough to invite Chili

and I on board for the

fun, with Decker and CJ

as alternates. We spent

several months exchang-

ing e-mails before hitting

on our team “uniforms”

and music. We were

probably a bit biased, but

we thought our outfits of

Red and White striped

French Sailor’s shirts,

sailors caps, black slacks

and shoes looked pretty

snazzy, especially paired

with our dog’s red sailor

collars complete with

sequined anchor. A rous-

ing rendition of

On my journey home from

my first Portuguese Water

Dog Club National Specialty, I

thought about all the accom-

plishments I saw during the

week; the beautiful ribbons

and awards, the new titles and

certificates, the proud owners

and handlers, the examples of

strong teamwork between

dogs and people.

Even though my first Portu-

guese Water Dog, RainCity

Stillwater Serendipity, a.k.a.

Scupper, was a pet, I felt as

though I let her down because

she did not have a string of

titles after her name when she

died this summer of a rare

tumor at just six years old.

It wasn’t that Scupper wasn’t

smart. She knew 47 com-

mands and tricks, and we

were always working toward

new goals. I think she just

preferred to do things her own

way, on her own terms, which

was usually more about hav-

ing fun rather than following

rules.

As much as I wanted her to,

Scupper never really liked the

water. When she was nine

months old, I entered her in

the water trial at Flowing

Lake. I was naive to think that

either of us had the skills to

pass Junior Water Dog level.

After retrieving the dummy,

Scupper had quite a party

parading her prize to the spec-

tators while I followed in des-

perate pursuit. Most of our

water training sessions were

just like that. Scupper pre-

ferred to zoom around the

beach.

Over the years we attended

several clicker training

classes– me learning how to

use a clicker and Scupper

learning human gestures and

words. When she passed her

Canine Good Citizen (CGC)

test, I thought she might be

ready to do some water work

again.

One day, at a little cove on

Lake Sammamish, I threw

several of her favorite objects

in the water and she retrieved

them successfully. I rewarded

her from the bait bag that was

hanging from my shorts. Then

we swam together. She began

to lose interest, so I reached

for some bait and found the

bait bag wide open. All of the

treats were at the bottom of

the lake! Returning to the

beach, I placed all our items in

a pile a few feet from shore--

her life jacket and mine, the

articles she had retrieved, and

the empty bait bag.

The last exercise to practice

was the underwater retrieve.

When Scupper stuck her head

under the water and brought

up the item successfully, I

yelled, “YES!”(The exclama-

tion “YES” was my replace-

ment word for the sound a

clicker makes.) So Scupper

expected a treat.

As she bounded out of the

water I just knew I had lost

her attention and she was

going to zoom around the

beach. However, she stopped

at the pile of objects. I saw her

pick up the bait bag and

thought, “Oh, dear, she’s going

to shred that to pieces.”

Much to my surprise, Scupper

trotted back into the water,

holding the bait bag by the

belt clip. The opening of the

bag was facing me and with a

little flip of her head she pre-

sented me with the bag as if to

say, “Now, where’s my treat?”

I was so impressed, so hum-

bled, and so proud of my girl.

No title, medal, or certificate

could have made that mo-

ment more precious or

memorable. The moments we

spent together, learning how

to communicate and how to

live one day at time are more

important than having a list of

titles at the end of her name.

Scupper touched a lot of lives

with her wit and humor.

She will be missed.

The Pacific Northwest Portu-

guese Water Dog Club had a

splendid three-day weekend at

a brand new site for us--Deep

Lake, Nolte State Park, Wash-

ington. We have been wanting

to secure a site where we can

hold workshops and trials dur-

ing the busy (and sometimes

warmer) summer months,

and thanks to a contact in the

Newfoundland world, I found

a great spot at Deep Lake. It is

a lovely woodland park with a

very private beach and shore

area, and wonderfully helpful

and supportive park staff.

PNWPWDC held a two day

training workshop with Julie

Asbed, followed by a one day

trial with Sarah Kahn as judge.

The workshop was just fantas-

tic, with loads of information

on building a strong founda-

tion for training in water work,

and lots of specifics on training

each exercise at all the levels. I

know all of the 20 workshop

participants

and the many

auditors left

with renewed

optimism and

determina-

tion, and I'm

sure we'll be

seeing the

fruits in the

next year as

everyone's training progresses.

Thanks so much to Julie for

the seminar. It was such a

pleasure to have her here.

Following the workshop we

held a one day trial with club

member Sarah Kahn as judge.

Many thanks to Sarah for giv-

ing us her time and expertise

for this one day trial. It is so

nice to have an extra chance to

compete in the Pacific North-

west each year, and great to

have her as our judge. Many

thanks are also due to Sarah as

well for helping get this new

site approved by PWDCA for

our water trials. I hope we can

continue to take advantage of

it in the future to allow us two

local trial sites for CWDX

competitors.

For us here in the PNW, a July

trial is early in the season, but

we had a nice entry of 23 dogs

with lots of up-and-coming

Junior and Apprentice entries,

many of them getting their

feet wet for the first time.

What a pleasure to see so

many teams working so well

together despite a wet and

rather chilly day (what can I

say--this IS Washington!) We

had lots of "almost-there" near

qualifiers, and four qualifying

teams:

Junior:

Booty and Janet Boyd

(Stowaway Jeweled Pirate)

Apprentice:

Tusk and Alex Scott

(Stargazer's Ace of Hearts)

Alee and Tammy Hibberson

(Eauchien's Trial Run)

Working:

Stoker and Suzanne Malick

(Lookout's Stokin' the Fire)

Alee and Tammy Hibberson

(Eauchien's Trial Run)

Congratulations to the qualifi-

ers, and kudos to all who got

out there to enjoy working with

their dogs.

Many thanks are due of course

to our volunteers. I am so ap-

preciative of all who pitched in

and helped, especially since

Jim Smith wasn't able to at-

tend this trial. He has been our

most capable and proficient

equipment master, and it was

difficult indeed to fill his shoes,

particularly since we were trial-

ing here for the very first time.

If you want a laugh, ask a

PNW'er about the sinking

markers (they don't call it Deep

Lake for nothing!), diving hu-

mans, and a true working wa-

ter dog that delivered extra

chain, life jackets and chain

clips out to to the boat so

we wouldn't have to come in

and lose sight of the sunken

marker. And, yes, we did keep

laughing!

Usually towering over the show site, Mt.

Rainier chose to not make an appear-

ance today for the Pacific Northwest

Supported Entry.

Instead, we were greeted with a day full

of, what we are known for here in

Washington, gray skies, rain and cooler

temperatures - did I mention the rain?

Despite these, unlike summer, condi-

tions, the spirits of those present were

not dampened. Needless to say, the

agility teams were dealt a challenging

day!

Sweepstakes and regular class judging

were followed by a complimentary

lunch provided by the PNWPWDC.

Fortunately, members (angels), Angela

Harding and Val Tangen offered up

their tents for our use, letting us gather,

huddle and eat undercover! Also step-

ping up to help with the set-up, were

Theresa Zorad and Pam Coffeen. To all

of you, THANK YOU! It's members like

yourselves that allow club events take

place. Planned or in a pinch, volunteers

are always needed.

And thank you to everyone who came

out - as a spectator or participant - sup-

porting your club!

class. What fun to watch

our PNW pals! Monday,

Sydney ran open, Excellent

B Standard and JWW. She

finished clean except for a

slip off the dog walk, won a

beautiful 1st ribbon 1st in

JWW. JoJo ran (and I

mean RAN) in Open, Nov-

ice B Standard and JWW.

Later we watched team

obedience, shopped, had

blood drawn for the Ca-

nine Behavior Genetics

Project, went to boutiques,

dinners, membership

meeting, bid on auction

items and won a raffle bas-

ket. (Thanks Cathi Jzyk for

drawing my name!!) and

saw the Retrospective slide

show / narrative by Mary-

anne Murray about the

early days of the PWD in

America. JP (my husband)

joined us for the trip home

from a wonderful first Spe-

cialty. (I don’t count one

day at the Silverdale Na-

tional as really attending a

specialty.)”

Our Club's donations to

the auction were 11x14

pictures from Creative In-

dulgence of the Sliger's

dog. It is a mirror image of

Lucy with her head in the

water. The photographic

copy sold for $550 and

the other, using a process

to mimic water color,

brought $800. Hurrah for

us!

drove their Dodge Cara-

3 dogs (in Vari-Kennels), 4

wire crates, 1 tent crate, an

supplies, hair dryer, case

of water, luggage, 2 cool-

but a little space for hu-

Oh, and Stan’s bicycle! all

packed INSIDE the van

Angela tells us: “After a

lovely sunny week, we

brought back: 1 leg in Rally

Advanced (Torrie), 2

CGC’s (Torrie and Roxie),

one 3rd place in Veteran

Bitches, 10 and older

(Chiqui). Roxie made first

cut in BOB and showed

behind her daddy for 1st

place in Stud Dog. Torrie

drew a lot of notice with

her “half and half” “punk”

haircut– shaved on just

the right side for the

judges’ education seminar.

People asked why her front

leg was shaved – not notic-

ing that it wasn’t just the

leg, but the whole side!“

Sandy Lappi, Linda Adams

and Janet Lankester flew

to the specialty together.

They’d rented a suburban

for 3 dogs, crates, wheels

and 6 suitcases. The

rental car company didn’t

have one, so substituted

something "similar, a

got one of his Rally Novice

competed in BOB. What a

thrill to watch! I attended

all the dinners, thought the

food and service was great.

Nice, at the gala to see the

old dogs and the breeders

that started it all. At the

auction I bought a ceramic

dog head with clothes on

it. Everyone thought that it

was hideous, but I have an

eclectic type of house, so it

will fit in. I attended the

If braving the mucky dampness of the Great Northwest Outdoors isn’t your cup

of tea, you probably have a Portuguese Water Dog who is climbing the walls for

entertainment.

With twenty plus weeks of rain in the offing, braving the precipitation to amuse

your dog is a challenge. Your brain tells you it’s good for doggie health, but

you’ve run out of dry towels and shoes. What’s a parent to do?

Well, you can gather the Gore-tex and out you go. But let’s look at alternatives between

your sodden sojourns. You and a cohort of practically any size or gender, or a neighbor

child hired for a small fee, can have some indoor fun. Take opposite ends of the hall, toss-

ing a toy between you as the dog plays “monkey in the middle”: of course, you have to let

the dog win now and again! Lots of whoops and hollers keep up doggie interest.

Next, human hides out: under the covers, in the closet or bathtub whilst you hold the dog’s

collar, not using a “stay” command. Person calls out “Ready!” After a few easy “finds”,

complicate the task by covering ears and eyes (the dog’s, not yours). “Finds” accompanied

by claps and cheers can be a cheap thrill for your dry Water Dog—the key is your enthusi-

asm. Solo owners find creative ways to play games, scattering tiny treats or carrot bits for

an Easter-egg type hunt. Don’t always make this an obedience exercise—sometimes dogs

just wanna have fun!

Tossing toys up or down stairs can exercise a stir-crazy PWD without expending much

energy yourself. This is not a game for a still-developing puppy; nor is racing and chasing

on slippery floors. We’ve forgone fashionable hardwood at our house, keeping carpets for

good paw traction. Teach your dog to go backwards up the stairs...to play “sleep” in be-

tween games...to stalk, not rush, the squirrels outside the window. (You do this by making

a total fool of yourself, tiptoeing s-l-o-w-l-y towards the glass, keeping the dog at your

side. They soon get the picture and will creep dramatically towards the prey.)

Request objects by name for him to fetch, and try odd things like car keys or tools. Know-

ing how to find and bring a hand-held telephone could save your life some day.

If all else fails, get out a good book, cookies and tea (or beer and pretzels) and invite your

dog to cuddle up!

**Mark your 2008 calendar for the annual TV treat -- the Westminster Kennel Club

dog show. This year the dates are February 11 and 12, but for the first time in decades,

Working Group will be on Tuesday, not Monday. USA channel airs the show 8 p.m. to

11p.m both nights, and then repeats each day's coverage the next morning. Several Pacific

Northwest dogs have competed at the Garden in other years. Jonah, Pickles and Dazzle

were entered in 2006 and 7; Toby won Best of Breed in 2000; and Bo'sun won Best of

Breed in 2003 & 4. Visit www.westminsterkennelclub.org.
