    THE PRESIDENT

Hi to all the NWCA members!

We had a good meeting last Friday. It was hot but we made it through ok. I have two boxes of the prospectus to get out to the people who want to enter the NWCA show. Please call me and I will deliver some to you. I will be dropping some off at Sumner Woodworking and take some to the other woodworking stores in Seattle and the one near SouthCenter mall. Don't forget to get your entries ready for the show. If you know anyone who can volunteer to do something at the show please ask them. Happy Birthday to everyone born in September that includes me! (Your editor says me too! ) Don't forget the club has a library for your use . Keep your carving tools sharp and ready to use at all times!

    Your President,

  • General Meeting Minutes

General Meeting Notes August 12, 2016

Meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm

Thank you to all who showed up in the toasty weather we are having! Truly dedicated members.

The picnic was a great success, thanks to everyone who attended and the cost was fully covered by all

who donated to the raffle. If you were unable to attend you missed a great time!

We received a thank you letter from Ellensburg carvers, thanking us for sharing the insurance. Everyone

    wins with co-operation.

Betty Miller has written to Good Day Northwest to possibly get some members to do a live show on

carving, it would be great publicity. It is a television show on channel 5. Even if we cant get on the show,

she may be able to get some tickets to allow members to sit in the audience and display carvings or

advertisement. She has also put a video in face book and twitter. She is putting in a huge amount of

effort to help out the club, and is looking for ideas for publicity. Any ideas would be welcome. Please step

up and help her out, she cant do it alone!

Keith Preece is encouraging people to enter carvings in the Puyallup fair, he said the judge is easy!

One thing that has been suggested to bring in more attendees to our show, is bringing in some antique

cars. The Grange will only allow twelve, if you know of anyone who would be interested, please contact

    Ron Dyer.

    Show and Tell

Richard LaPlante Basswood Sunflower and a Jeutong relief carving of Canadian geese.

Walt Biddell Intarsia lighthouse, several different woods which I cant spell!

Meeting was adjourned early, no auction this week.

    Secretary, Robin McDonald

Also, thanks to Tom and Lynn Flora for taking our NWCA banner over to the

Ellensburg Show and bringing it back.

From Betty: Please watch this video for information about our Show.

https://youtu.be/VBiAodAqs-g . Help us advertise our show by inviting

your friends and neighbors. Spread the word as we have a new location

and a new date so even the regulars need to be reminded.

Editor: The video has also a nice sampling of some of our entries last year!!

    https://youtu.be/VBiAodAqs-g

  • If you dont know who carved these deep relief pieces, then you

just havent been paying attention!!!! (What am I going to do??) Of

course, Richard LaPlante strikes again. Those Geese are not carved

separately and then glued in!! And yet if you reach in and feel

behind the head and wings you wonder How did he do that??

    .

    SHOW AND TELL

Then he gets that little smile on his

face that says Wouldnt you like

    to know?? Well we know---lots

of hard work and lots of time

trying all the tools he has and lots

    of sanding!

Great work, I bet we will see it in

    several shows these coming

months. Cant wait to see it all

    painted and finished! Are you

going to get it done in time for the

fair?? From Editor: I know not all of the readers can attend our meetings and

share with us personally your carvings or other wood projects. If youre

working on some projects, for fun or on a Honey-do list, feel free to send

me some pictures. ([email protected]) Maybe I can feature some of

them in future letters. Im always looking to fill in a few blank spaces.

    mailto:[email protected]

  • And, not to be outdone by Richard, we have

Walt Biddell with his latest Intarsia project.

Again with a wonderful eye for choosing the

right woods. No dyes or paints ever touch a

good intarsia! Ill bet well see it in the

coming show, and maybe at the fair.

Well, thats the end of this months show and tell. Slim

pickins as they say in other parts of the country.

However, Ill have to admit the quality outweighed the

    quantity!

I met these two gals at Renton River Days. Even though Jim

Ploegman died this Spring, his son and others are keeping

    the classes alive.

  • If you are familiar with our latest show in Puyallup, just find W. Pioneer street,

then head West. It will turn into 72nd then turn right onto Waller Rd. When you

get to 64th, turn West for about block. There is a sign indicating the driveway to

the Grange. Piece of cake. Of course there are other routes that get you there,

but thought Id give a little perspective to its location. Im sure there is a slightly

    different map on o
