Northwest Outward Bound School Training _____________________________________________________________________________

Overall Training Objective:

Northwest Outward Bound School’s training objective is to instruct, mentor, and assess staff at a high standard to insure that

all courses have competent, qualified staff. The culture of open communication, shared learning and assessment is

incorporated in our training environment to ensure that all staff will have an accurate assessment in their technical,

interpersonal and educational skills. Throughout training the Outward Bound mission, values, design principles and outcomes

will be implemented and demonstrated so staff not only manage risk appropriately, but are able to instruct a value-forming

Outward Bound course.

Big Picture Field Staff Training Progression:

Prior to being hired, all new staff will be designated to one wilderness Basecamp. Upon completing three years at designated

Basecamp and promotion to Instructor, NWOBS staff will have the opportunity to work out of both wilderness Basecamps. All

new Assistant Instructors will attend United New Staff Training and Student Management Skills Training at one wilderness

Basecamp, then Assistant Instructors will continue the rest of their trainings out of their designated Basecamp. Upon

successful completion of Trainings, new staff will be assigned different courses based on their assessment during trainings.

Assistant Instructors will be promoted into the Instructor role based on the following criteria: experience with a number of

NWOBS courses, successful completion of Instructor Trainings, completion of Evaluation and Development Checklist, accurate

self-assessment, and the ability to run quality courses in conjunction with mentoring new staff.

ought to have experience working with youth populations 12 – 18 years old, fostering effective group dynamics and facilitating

cooking along with meeting the minimum qualifications in 3 of our technical activities (listed below).
