NWO readers expressgratitude for this year’s blessings
Tis the season when giving thanks is especially on our minds. In keeping with tradition, we re-cently reached out to our readers and asked them to share what they are especially thankful for this year. The following are some of the com-ments we received, with more to follow in our Dec. 5 issue.
• • • • •I am blessed not just at this season
of the year but each day that I can arise from my bed and see the sun, walk around, and at night snuggle down in a
warm blanket to sleep. I thank God for each year He has given me, and am appreciative, in light of the many homeless people, that I have a roof over my head.
Just life itself is a priceless gift.
Helen LedfordOAK RIDGE
Not only at Thanksgiving, but every day I have an endless list of things to be thankful for. I am so thankful for my hus-band Phillip, our daughter Savannah and our son who is due in January. This De-cember I will celebrate my 6th anniversary of being cancer-free. I am so thankful for my family, our health, our home and what a great year this has been.
I am also thankful that Jesus died for
us and that God has forgiven my sins and saved my soul.

I am thankful for the wonderful family God has entrusted me with and for the blessings He has given my family this year. I’m also thankful for His gifts of good health and great friends.

I’m thankful for the opportunity to help so many people in our community to have an exercise routine in their lifestyle and for them to feel better and have more energy. It truly warms my heart to see our members reach their goals. We
have been blessed with a wonderful com-munity to share our new adventure with and the smiling faces and laughter we share together are priceless.

NEWS in brief
Boat driver sentenced in deaths of pregnant mother, sonDAVIDSON COUNTY – McLeansville resident Michael Greene, 54, was driving a speed boat on High Rock Lake on May 25, 2013, when he crashed into a pon-toon boat in which Oak Ridge residents Melissa Chambers Britt, her husband Clay and their 3-year-old son Jaiden, along with Melissa’s brother, Michael Chambers, were riding. Jaiden and Me-lissa, who was pregnant at the time, were killed as a result of the crash and Cham-bers suffered critical head injuries.
On Nov. 20, Greene pled guilty to
three counts of involuntary manslaugh-ter. According to an article in the News and Record, under the plea agreement, the three counts were consolidated into a single count of involuntary manslaugh-ter, a Class F felony.
A Davidson County Superior Court judge issued Greene a suspended sen-tence of 16-29 months in prison, along with 12 months of house arrest. He also received supervised probation of 32 months, was fined $500 and ordered to complete 50 hours of community service.

Why in the world did N.C. Department of Transportation go to all the trouble and
expense to move the East Harrell Road entrance off N.C. 68 and not put in a right turn lane while they were at it? And while we’re on the subject, how much did this project cost?
According to NCDOT’s website, the purpose of this project was to improve safety along N.C.
68, between East Harrell Road and Bartonshire Drive, by constructing left-turn lanes for these intersections with
N.C. 68. The project is expected to reduce the number of rear-end collisions that crash data indicates were associated with left-turn movements from N.C. 68 onto East Harrell Road and West Harrell Road, immediately north and south of

the Haw River culvert.
Bobby Norris, district engineer with NCDOT, offered several factors which were considered during the redesign of the N.C. 68 and East Harrell Road intersection:
• West Harrell Road was closed because there was a good and viable detour to connect to the closed portion. The crash history showed accidents as a result of vehicles waiting to turn left on to West Harrell Road.
• Relocation of the East Harrell Road section was shifted to provide more sight distance and to allow the needed room for the addition of the left turn lane. This was another historic factor from crash data.
• Bottom line: both directions had issues of vehicles stopped while waiting to make left turns.
• Based upon the crash data, the right turns on to both of these roads were not an issue and traffic data indicated there are only 200 vehicles a day on average making the right turn onto East Harrell Road from N.C. 68. This reflects only 20 vehicles a day during the peak hours when traffic is the heaviest. Vehicles making the right turn onto this road only have to slow down to make the turn, whereas from the other direc-tion, it was necessary to stop and cross a lane of traffic.
• Based upon the crash history data, all of the issues that contributed to the accidents were addressed with the current design.
As for the cost of the project, Norris says it was bid at $1,819,807.14 and DOT is “on course to come in close to this cost for construction.”
Proceeds from craft and raffle sales will be donated to local mission groups.

of Greensboro, this season will be one to remember. Liberty Mutual Insur-ance recently announced that GUSF will receive $2,500 as part of its “Play Positive Pledge” program. Over the course of the fall season, GUSF rallied its parents, coaches, and supporters to visit PlayPosi-tive.com/Pledge and confirm their com-mitment to promote good sportsmanship. This effort enabled the group to earn one of 10 awards given to youth sports organi-zations around the country.
“The Play Positive program is a won-derful way to demonstrate how a diverse group of individuals can work together to achieve a shared goal, and we are thankful to the Greensboro community for supporting us in our commitment to sportsmanship in youth sports,” said David Trapp of GUSF. “We are grateful to Liberty Mutual Insurance for giving us the oppor-tunity to earn this $2,500 – it will go a long way in helping our organization develop an urban soccer pitch for a low-income area in Greensboro so that more youth athletes have the opportunity to participate.”
Liberty Mutual Insurance introduced
the Play Positive Pledge to shine a light on the value of sportsmanship and instill a re-newed spirit in positive play in youth sports. A recent Liberty Mutual Play Positive sur-vey of 2,000 coaches and parents identi-fied a perceived decline in sportsmanship since their days as youth athletes. Parents and coaches considered “teamwork” and “sportsmanship” the two most important lessons learned through youth sports; yet approximately 50 percent of parents and coaches believe that sportsmanship in youth athletics is worse today than when they participated as children, compared to only 12 percent who feel it has improved.
“Liberty Mutual Insurance believes that the experiences and lessons learned at a young age serve as the foundation for the future,” said Antho-ny Storm, Liberty’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer. “We are proud to applaud Greensboro United Soccer Foundation, as well as the Greensboro community for pledging their commitment to sportsmanship, integrity and an overall positive experi-ence in youth sports.”

new son-in-law this year, who married my oldest daughter this past October. They have kept God as the center of their rela-tionship and that is all I could ask for.
And finally, my dad has beat all odds against pulmonary fibrosis for over six years now – even though he was told he only had six months to three years to live. He actually is playing golf again and shot his age –a 73 – and made a hole in one this year! My dad says “Just enjoy life doing what you love,” and he is a blessing from God that my sister and me are very thankful for.

I’m so thankful for my wonder-ful dad, Lawrence Wilson. These past couple of years have been hard on him. Through all the illness, my dad has continued to be there for others, helping them make it through hard times and not thinking once about himself or his health. I suppose that is why he is so tough – he never stops loving, caring and being there for us. This Thanksgiv-ing I want him to know how grateful we are to have him. As long as he’s around, our lives are full of joy and love.

During my recent travels abroad, it was easy to recognize that I too often take our relatively comfortable American lifestyle for granted. Even considering significant cultural differences, we are indeed a blessed nation when measured against others. Comparing simple things, like hotel television program-ming, public manners or negotiating foreign streets and highways, I noticed considerable differences in expecta-
tions and behavior. We certainly aren’t perfect, but in many aspects, I believe that we compare very favorably to our international friends.
I also recognized and considered that preservation of the physical beauty of our country, state, town and neigh-borhood is an important and meaning-ful indication of our expectations as a society, reflecting on our national identity. I am therefore proud and quite thankful to be an American.

I am thankful that the doctor found my husband’s cancer early and was able to get it all out of his body. Everyone told us we should be thankful that the type of cancer he had was very treatable and I am thankful for that, but what people who have not been through this do not understand is that even though the cancer is gone, my husband still has a lot of issues he is dealing with. Still, I am very grateful that he is cancer-free and we are looking forward to a long life together. I have loved him for over 38 years and hope to have him to love for another 38 or more.

I have just a general observation of ongoing events of 2014 that I have a good feeling about. The way this area is growing and attracting new residents, merchants and visitors is a good thing for northwest Guilford County.
Also, I am especially happy for the completion of the “East Harrell Road In-terchange Relocation” project. Hopeful-ly, there will be no more accidents with devastating and sorrowful outcomes.

I have so much to be thankful for that it’s hard to name it all. First, I’m thankful for the health of my mother, who’s 88. I’m thankful for my church and pastor and my wonderful husband, children and grandchildren. God has been so good to us.

This has, fortunately, been a dull year for me. At 63, I have retired from a 14-year stint on the Summerfield Town Coun-cil with all its craziness and crazy people.
Our significant event for 2014 has been the wedding of my youngest son, Adam and his long-time girlfriend, Emma Boyette, on June 14. Mamie and I are now the happy grandparents of a golden retriever, Beaufort, and a cat, Tanner. It could not be anything better for now. We are blessed this Thanksgiving.

I am thankful for many everyday things. A big thing that comes to mind is my aunt’s breast cancer was detected early, she is doing well and is now cancer-free!
I am currently in Asheville, which makes me think of another thing I am thankful for. Every year we take our kids on a trip somewhere the week of Thanks-giving to get away for a couple nights. I am thankful we can create these memo-ries with our children and enjoy time to slow down during this busy time of year.
I am thankful for my new job. I started a year ago as a personal trainer

DAVID COLE POTTERYOwners: David and Lori Cole
A little business background: I (David) have been making pottery since 1986 when I was in college. My first round of business was from 1990-1992. My pottery studio opened in Oak Ridge in 2004 and remained open through 2008; after almost a six-year break, we decided to re-open our retail pottery gallery this month.
What is offered for sale at your studio? Hand-made, functional and contemporary pottery in the Southern traditional style.
What is unique about it? Having a working studio onsite at my gallery al-lows the customer to see pottery as it is being made.
Your business philosophy? Beautiful pottery should prompt the viewer or user to pause and smile.
On a personal note: Lori and I have two sons, Nolan and Jake. We are members of Central Baptist Church in Oak Ridge. In my spare time, I enjoy working in my garden and orchard, antiquing, and spending time with my family.

Fike gets a ‘Northern welcome’Northern 14 | 28 | 9 | 7 || 58Fike 14 | 7 | 0 | 7 || 28
It’s Friday, Nov. 21, with only minutes until Northern (12-1) and Fike (12-2)kick off the second round of the 3-AA NCHSAA football playoffs in Wilson.
Congregated in Fike’s crammed visitors’ locker room, Northern head football coach Johnny Roscoe demand-ed the floor as he prepared to deliver his pregame speech.
“Give them a ‘Northern welcome,’” said Roscoe.
With that, the players went nuts.
And that was the beginning of a 58-28 rout of Fike … and a proper ‘North-ern welcome.’
During the coin toss, the Fike Demons elected to play defense first, which turned out to be a mistake for the home team.
On the game’s second play from scrim-mage, junior running back CJ Freeman corralled a handoff from quarterback Cam Harris, darting straight up the middle, untouched, for a 60-yard touchdown.
About one minute later, Northern’s defense forced and recovered a fumble on Fike’s 23-yard line. Three plays later, Freeman waltzed 11 yards into the end zone for his second score in less than three minutes into the first quarter.
Northern led 14-0.
With everything on the line, the De-mons battled back with a couple of big pass plays. Northern let their lead slip away as Fike went on a 21-6 run, taking a 21-20 lead with under seven minutes
Smith’s fourth quarter rally downs Northern on opening nightby L.A. LOGAN
While each team struggled to find an offensive rhythm, Smith used a late fourth quarter rally to get the win over visiting Northern, 66-57, at the boy’s basketball game on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
With fewer than six minutes remain-ing in the fourth quarter, Northern center Josh Gibson received a low post
entry pass and backed down a Smith defender with two dribbles when the whistle blew. Gibson picked up his fifth foul, eliminating him from the game.
Prior to the foul, the Nighthawks were down by three points, but without their senior captain protecting the paint, the defense fell apart. Smith outscored

remaining in the second quarter.
But after letting off the gas pedal, Northern lit up the scoreboard with a 22-0 run directed by Freeman, heading into halftime with a 42-20 edge.
Notable stats | Freeman rushed for 231 yards on 15 carries and five touchdowns – all in the first half. But the highly recruited running back was not satisfied with his or his team’s performance.
“I couldn’t capitalize on certain things,” said Freeman. “I had too many mental mistakes.
“Our performance was good, but … we’re better than the way we played.”
Harris threw three touchdowns to wide receivers Mook Reynolds, Tre Marsh and Tucker Hord. Hord’s 84-yard touchdown reception was the longest of his career.
Harris also nabbed his 10th intercep-tion, which tied a school record previ-ously set by his older brother Maurice, who plays wide receiver for the Univer-sity of California.
Shout-out to all the family and fans who made the drive to Wilson. Although tem-peratures weren’t as cold as they were the previous week, it was still a chilly night and you didn’t let that deter you from cheering louder than the home team’s crowd. Coming up on Nov. 28 | No. 7 seed Northern Nighthawks hit the road for a third round matchup versus No. 6 seed Or-ange Panthers (13-1) at 500 Orange High School Rd., Hillsborough on what they hope will be “Purple Friday.” Orange’s only loss this year was to No. 1 seed Southern.
“We can beat anybody, no matter the seed,” said Reynolds confidently.

Northern 17-11 in the final five minutes.
“Losing Josh in the fourth quar-ter was definitely a huge factor in the game,” said Northern head varsity bas-ketball coach Bill Chambers. “We are not the same team without him.”
Despite forcing a couple of turnovers late in the fourth quarter, Northern’s offense was colder than the freezing temperatures outside and time and time again the team failed to take advantage of available opportunities.
Northern’s size on the interior altered shots on defense early in the first half, forcing Smith to take jump shots. Unfor-tunately, the Nighthawks were unable to secure defensive rebounds, giving the Golden Eagles multiple scoring chances.
“We seemed a little tight and anx-ious,” said Chambers. “We hung with
Smith most of the game. They were very athletic, (which) ended up hurting us on the offensive boards.”
In his high school debut, Northern freshman guard Andy Pack scored 10 points. Sophomore guard Jarrett Boy added 9 points, and senior guard Matt Graham tallied 7 points.
Chambers expected another chal-lenging game on Nov. 25, when North-west was to host Northern at 7:30 p.m. “Northwest will be a real challenge for us because they are so talented, especially at the guard positions,” said Chambers. “Jalen Gore and Jalen Spicer are difficult to stop … We are confident, though, that if we play our game and use our advantages we can be successful.”

Northern freshmen light upscoreboard in season openerby L.A. LOGAN
Northern Nighthawks’ freshmen Kassie Robakiewicz and Elissa Cunane launched their varsity basketball career with a bang, combining for 33 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds, as Northern blew out Smith 68-36 in a non-confer-ence game on the season’s opening night, Nov. 18.
Northern raced to a 22-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. At halftime, the Nighthawks were in complete control with a 30-14 advantage.
“I am impressed with my team’s unselfishness,” said Northern girls head varsity basketball coach Kim Furlough. “They just looked for the open player and shared the ball extremely well.”
The second half proved no different as Furlough’s squad forced Smith into shooting tough, contested shots, leading to fast break opportunities for the Night-hawks. Northern registered 23 steals
and five blocks, but turned the ball over 21 times.
Senior forward Kasey Johnson fin-ished with a double-double –15 points, 10 rebounds – and recorded 6 steals.
Furlough said the upperclassmen embraced the freshmen and helped the newcomers transition to the varsity level.
“We played together all last summer, so I felt that experience helped them adjust,” said Furlough.
Northern was scheduled to face Northwest on Nov. 25; the Nighthawks have won six out of the last seven meet-ings between the two teams.
“I know Northwest is a very good team,” said Furlough. “I’m glad that we were able to get our first game jitters out before playing Northwest. We will need to cut down the number of turnovers for that game.”

Treasures amidstlife’s rubble
by MICHELLE HOLTSTOKESDALE – Yes, 1-2-3. On Jan. 23, 2014, we lost a huge part of our lives when our outbuilding burned to the ground. From the outside looking in, it was just an outbuilding. But it was so much more – it was a part of the grand tour you got if you came to our house. Built in 1994 as a storage building and man cave for my husband, Steve Holt, it quickly turned into the center of any event at our home. We got married in 1998 in our back yard. The building had a shelter, and our wedding reception was held there.
Inside were all the collectibles we found at yard sales, flea markets, etc., as well as tools, mementoes, my son’s first bike and tricycle that my dad bought him – and a little red Coca Cola
wagon. The walls were covered with license plates, photos, posters, auto-graphed NASCAR plates, die-cast cars, Hot Wheels and bottles – Pepsi, Moun-tain Dew, old and new. It had somewhat of a country store appeal.
At the same time, it was the work-shop. If a car, mower, bike, etc., needed attention, it got it there at the building.
Although devastating at the time, the building burning was minor compared to the rest of our year.
1). My husband rebuilt 90 percent of the outbuilding himself – in a way, I feel it was therapeutic for him. Cold, gray winter days couldn’t tear him away. As he worked on rebuilding his man cave, much of it to the original appearance, I didn’t say much, except to give it time.

2). I lost my best friend of two years within weeks of our outbuilding burn-ing down. Linda Alberty, my co-worker and dear friend, had a neck fusion last
October and returned to work in Janu-ary, only to be somewhat “not herself” – headaches, black spots, blurred visions, etc. An MRI was scheduled on a Mon-

After his beloved outbuilding and man cave burned to the ground in January, Steve Holt constructed a new building, and family and friends helped him furnish it.

Counting our blessingsMost of us agree we should
count our blessings daily, yet we often spend far more en-ergy focusing on all the things that are less than perfect in our lives versus all the things, big and small, that we have to be grateful for.
As we typically do during the Thanksgiving season, we recently
reached out to members of the northwest community and asked “What are you especially thankful for this year?” Many of the answers we got were both deeply sincere and thought-provoking … like the response we received from Casey Stone, who we wrote about six years
ago when, as a 22-year-old newlywed,

day, but a few days before that she was rushed to the hospital and had a stroke, from which she didn’t recover. She was removed from life support on Sunday, and we lost her the following day.
It had been Linda’s idea to have a get-together to celebrate our new out-building. Since April was Linda’s birth-day month, my coworkers and I had the celebration then; although Linda was gone, she would have wanted it this way.
3). As I wrote earlier this year (North-west Observer, Feb. 21-27, 2014 issue), my husband has battled skin cancer since 2010 (we lost his dad to mela-noma in 2008). In April, melanoma was detected in a lifelong freckle in Steve’s cheek. Surgeries were completed in June to remove the cancer. Since then, Steve has had monthly visits for cor-tisone shots – so painful that it brings tears to his eyes – to fill in the space where the cancer had been. This has left a visible scar which is a reminder of the battle he has fought and won.
4). In August I received the news that I would lose my job of 25 years when Kmart on Bridford Parkway closed for good. This job has always helped feed my family, provided health insurance and an income for all of our needs and
some of our wants. This news came only 12 days after I purchased a SUV to pro-vide space for my granddaughter and family to do things together (before this we had always had to take two vehicles to go places together). My last day of employment was Nov. 7.
This year has been a reminder that the building fire was only a test – a test to see just how strong we are. Losing the building, although devastating at the time, was nothing compared to losing my dear friend, the battle to fight skin cancer, and now, to losing my job.
Mementos can be replaced, memo-ries will remain, but some things you will never get back.
We wish to thank numerous people who donated items to put in the new building, some of whom were complete strangers – Willie McLaughlin, Lisa Swain, Jack and Becky Moore, Janet Al-len, Gerald Mabe, Tony Swain, Donna Gauldin, Otilia Glossom, Kim Hemric, Shay Ruff and others who have just come by to see our building.
We appreciate the continued support of family and friends, and know that God has shown us love in many forms. We are truly blessed.
she was diagnosed with leukemia.
Like others who have faced seri-ous health issues, when Casey says she is grateful for her health, she does so from the perspective of someone who has been on the other side, scared and having endured being endlessly poked, prodded and tested – and in her case, being told she could never have children. And when she thanks God for miracles, she does so as she looks at her 2-year-old daughter Savannah, as healthy as she is beautiful. Casey and her husband Phillip are all the more grateful to be expecting their second child in January and all indi-cations are that they will have a healthy baby boy. Life is good.
To add to the gratitude that so many of you have shared, I want to express how deeply grateful I am for the love of family and friends, for my team of competent, committed co-workers who
face endless deadlines with positive attitudes and humor, and for being in business this year and for the past 18 years – after losing 40 percent of our advertising during the Great Recession, we came very close to going down. Behind the scenes I was both financially and emotionally stretched. Having now been on the other side, being back on firmer footing is something I do not, and will not take for granted.
Despite the challenges of publishing a community newspaper, it is something I find great joy in doing (most of the time) and I’m grateful for the readers who value what we do and the advertis-ers who make it financially possible for us to do it.
For you and yours, I wish not only abundant blessings, but daily gratitude for all there is to celebrate even in the midst of some of life’s biggest storms.

GRIPES to... Those who put out
Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving. My children see them and think Santa is coming soon. I have to tell them Thanksgiving comes before Christmas. They agonize for over a month wanting to know when Santa’s coming.
Northern Guilford HS athletic direc-tor and principal who allowed football players to be released from school seven hours before the start of the game. That left cheerleaders and band to arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the game.
Those who decorate for Christmas before we take time to recognize our American tradition to set aside one day each year to give thanks for our many blessings. Don’t be brainwashed by the retailers’ commercialization of Christ-mas that starts right after Halloween.
People who gripe about putting Christmas decorations up early. If I’m going to put all that work into putting them up I want to enjoy them a long time! Be merry and enjoy the lights!
President Obama for his arrogance in issuing executive orders and attempting to circumvent Congress. This year, his policies were on the ballot and he lost. When liberal stances are uncovered, the people reject them. Mr. Obama, elec-tions have consequences.

The organizers, participating pastors and church members, and Oak Ridge Military Academy for hosting the an-nual Thanksgiving community service in Oak Ridge on Nov. 23. Loved the collaboration and wish we could do this at other times of the year!
