Northumberland Public Library Volume 5 Issue 4 Summer 2017 S pring heralds change and this year the season brought some exciting transitions. After nearly four years as children’s program director, Jan Bates is moving on to blaze trails outdoors in some of our nation’s glori- ous parks. She is leaving the program in the capable hands of Marilyn Smith, who just moved here from Hickory, North Carolina. Leaving the helm of our small “ship,” Alice Cooper, who has been our library director during the last four years, will move just up the road to head the Lancaster library. Cherie Carl will be interim director. (see inside for more on both women.) For Alice, this was a second stint. She was library di- rector for six years, from 1996 until 2002, and returned for another four years in January 2013. “It’s a bittersweet decision as this library and this community, where I’ve lived for more than 20 years, has a big place in my heart,” she said. At a time when libraries are changing with new tech- nologies, Alice worked hard to be sure the library was no longer a place to just borrow books and videos. It has become the place where you can get free internet to work on your resume, conduct research and take an online class. The library building has become the place where patrons can hold meetings, take a class, see local artwork as part of the Artisan Trail, fax an application, Build-a-Bear, get tech tutoring, and meet an author. Alice left just as the library is making preparations for for its newest service, a Mobile Library equipped with internet service. “This will release the library from its bricks and mortar facility and has the potential to take it out to all geographic points of Northumber- land County,” she said. Both Alice and Jan are moving on to new ven- tures, but they leave behind a foundation for the Nor- thumberland Public Library to continue growing and to offer the very best to the community. Their emphasis on the library as a commu- nity means it revolves around the needs of neighbors as well as the nurturing and openness that comes with belonging to a community. Volunteering here remains key to the library’s suc- cess. Alice was always on the lookout to find the per- son who might enjoy volunteering to fill a certain need. This will continue. As the library searches for a new director, its volun- teers, dedicated staff, board, and Cherie, will keep the library and all of its projects up and running. Upon her departure at the end of May, Alice empha- sized Lancaster as a sister library and a desire for col- laboration. Working together in rural communities is what makes them thrive. Working together for all that Northumberland Public Library can do and become proves that it truly belongs to everyone. May today there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.”
