Approaching a Prime -
Understand The Rules Of The Game
• Primes have a broad recruiting reach and can typically hire people quickly
– “We have good people” is not a strong value proposition
• Killer App gets defined in our baseline solution
– Intellectual Property (IP) that meets, or preferably exceeds the customer’s requirements at prices
that are affordable
• Customer intimacy and niche capabilities
– Get work share defined in terms of work content, not a percentage
– You understand (and have positioned) what the customer wants to buy, and can prove it
– Strong niche capabilities or technologies that can be integrated into our solution
• Socio-economic ‘slots’ are allocated based on commitments
– SI’s cover their bets on performance by having overlapping capabilities
– People in a contract-required geographic area where the Prime lacks a presence
– Tends to be ‘hired labor’ rather than specific content
Create Value and Know what work share you want 8
What is the best way for smaller companies to
interact with a System Integrator?
Treat The Prime Like A Customer
• Assign an Account Manager
– Understand how we operate; change
• Find a champion & develop the
account
– It takes time
• Find a niche and know where it is
needed in the customer set
– Introduce us to the client
– Create Demand for OUR value
• Bring a target to the table
Don’t Treat The Prime Like A Customer
• Let them know your strengths and
weaknesses up front (especially past
performance issues)
– We don’t deal well with surprises
• Be brutally honest with yourself
– Focus on what your company has the
bandwidth to do
– Not what YOU can do or have done
somewhere sometime in the past.
• Find the people who might specify your
product (but are not decision-makers)
– Match-up points of contact, for
example, techies like talking to techies
Demonstrate Alignment and Create Credibility 9
