Police keep an eye on firebugsWHITTLESEA firebugs are in thegun with police identifying potentialarsonists before the fire season.

Acting Inspector Paul Tysoe saidpolice would watch suspected arson-ists and intensify preventive meas-ures against bushfires and firebugsduring Operation Firesetter.

‘‘In Firesetter we identify recidivistarsonists at the start of each season,’’he said. ‘‘We develop a program onthem and sort out which ones we

have to talk to. Dedicated teams tar-get recidivist offenders.’’

Acting Inspector Tysoe declined tocomment on the number of firebugs, their location or their potential tar-gets. ‘‘We do target people we haveidentified as potential arsonists —we will watch them,’’ he said.

He said during the operationpolice would increase patrols inhigh-risk fire areas, including thoseareas identified by locals.

Police would also hold briefingsfor bushfire preparedness with fireauthorities next month, internalbriefings on the roles police officerswould play and liaise with theWhittlesea council on fire readinessissues such as trees on roadsides.

Acting Inspector Tysoe said policewould review resources and relevantagencies and review plans for evacu-ations and traffic management.

SOME Whittlesea ratepayers havewon appeals against valuations oftheir homes that added hundreds ofdollars to their rates.

Cheryl Booth, of Doreen, said herrates rose from $1800 to $2600. Sheobtained sales results on similarhouses and argued her home wasovervalued. It was reassessed and therate increase halved to $400, whichthe council says was a one-off case.

Phillip Stacey said the councilvalue on his Doreen house jumpedby $90,000 to $683,000 this year.

‘‘I wouldn’t have a hope of sellingit for that,’’ he said. ‘‘It jumped$90,000 in one year at a time whenthe market has fallen.’’

He said his rates rose from $1800to $2122. The self-employed car-penter, who is off work withoutinsurance because of injury, said theincrease hurt. He won a revaluationbut it only knocked off $67. ‘‘If I gotan independent valuer it could cost$120 or more and any saving wouldbe eaten up by that.’’

The council’s manager of property

and valuation services, Gino Mi-trione, said there had been 350objections to the 75,000 valuationsmade. ‘‘Around half of the objec-tions have been processed, with ahandful resulting in the propertyvalue being adjusted by a nominalamount,’’ he said.

“There are over 50 attributes thatcan affect the value of properties, including location, size of land, sizeof buildings, date of construction, number of rooms and bedrooms.’’

Meanwhile, Whittlesea ratepayersface possible further rate rises nextyear, plus a compulsory $100 stategovernment fire insurance levy oneach residential property. The coun-cil must fund a $6.8 million shortfallin a super scheme for employees.

Councillor Mary Lalios called forthe state government to change thescheme, which was compulsory forcouncils until it closed in 1993.

‘‘We all know that if our superan-nuation funds make losses we justbear the negative returns, while thefew that are in this scheme are beingpropped up by Whittlesea resid-ents.’’

The question of how women plan for their aged care, and how they pay for it, led WHIN to look at superannuation.

It seems everyone knows women retire with much less super than men, but there is no discussion about it, certainly no outrage!

The fi gures are stark. Australian women retire with only half the retirement savings of men. More than 50 per cent of retired women live in households with an annual income of less than $30,000, and single, divorced and widowed women are among the worst off. Unfortunately, even though this has been well documented since the inception of compulsory super in 1992, their plight remains largely unheeded by politicians, the government and industry.

The problem is that the compulsory superannuation system is built on a model of a ‘‘normal’’ taxpayer, who works full-time for 35 years – a system that favours what was a typical male working pattern. Women have always worked, but traditionally mostly in the private sphere, caring for family, providing food and running the household. In Australia in the 20th century,

this was evident in the fact that many women were unpaid ‘‘housewives’’ and their husbands were ‘‘breadwinners’’. Yet, the idea that women have only recently entered the paid labour force is a myth. Women, particularly poor women, have always been part of the paid labour force – usually in the worst-paid jobs under the worst conditions.

The main reason women have less super is reduced time in the paid workforce – because they are bearing and raising the next generation. Financial analyses show a strong relationship between the number of children a woman has and the amount of super accumulated – not the case for men. The other key reason is that women earn only 83 cents for every dollar earned by men.

Our population is ageing. With baby boomers rapidly expanding the proportion of retired people, the huge challenge facing us now is to prevent women from ageing and dying in poverty. Women over 65 make up 15 per cent of the population and can expect to live well beyond age pension entitlement at 67. New policies in regard to super would be the fi rst important step. ■

WHITTLESEA’S favourite footballingson, Trent Cotchin, has had the ball inhis sights since he was a small boy.

Richmond’s 22-year-old midfieldgun, who is tipped to be the club’s nextcaptain, was only five when he dis-closed his secret to his father, Wollertbusinessman Peter Cotchin.

Peter said: ‘‘He was playing for theunder nines (Reservoir Colts) and hadan uncanny sense of knowing wherethe ball would be next.

‘‘Trent said he could tell by his com-petitor’s eyes where they were kicking.

‘‘The ability to know where the ballwill be next is his secret weapon – itmeans he can be there first.’’

Trent has been awarded a secondsuccessive best and fairest award, orJack Dyer Medal, by Richmond afteran outstanding 2012 season.

Trent, who played 22 games thisseason, scored No.1 in the club fortotal disposals with 606 and was ran-ked No.2 for his 273 contested posses-sions.

His father said that although thewin was ‘‘impressive’’, his son waslevel-headed about his success.

‘‘He treats it like his job – he doesn’t

Mum, daughter cut off

AN elderly Bundoora woman and herdisabled adult daughter claim theyhave been left virtually houseboundbecause of bus cutbacks.

They live together on Mill ParkDrive where a bus used to stop threedoors from their home, but since thebus service was axed they have had torely on taxis.

Ann Feltis and her daughter,Annette, 58, who relies on a walkingframe or wheelchair for longer dis-tances, claim they are being discrimin-ated against because the nearest busservice is too far away for Annette toget to. ‘‘I am 78 and Annette is men-tally and physically handicapped,’’Mrs Feltis said. ‘‘My daughter hasmedical and dental appointments andwe now have to catch cabs.’’

Mrs Feltis said there was a pathwaythat ran between houses from MillPark Drive to McKimmies Roadwhere there was a bus, but the pathwas too rough for Annette’s walkingframe.

‘‘Then in McKimmies Road there’sno pedestrian crossing nearby and wehave to try and cross a very busy roadand Annette is very slow.’’

The women support the Bring Back

the Buses Action Group, which lastweek staged a protest outside Parlia-ment House.

Helen Said, the group’s spokes-woman, said the elderly, disabled, peo-ple without cars and parents withtoddlers and school children had beendisadvantaged by bus cuts.

‘‘They now have to walk further, change buses more often and cross bu-sier roads. Many elderly people havebecome housebound because they can-not walk the extra distance to catch adifferent bus,’’ she said.

Ms Said put Liberal members, Plan-ning Minister and Northern Metro-politan MLC Matthew Guy, andNorthern Metropolitan MLC CraigOndarchie on notice.

‘‘If they don’t assist us, then theymay become targets for protests,’’ shesaid.

The group wants the state govern-ment to reinstate buses, including the563 and 571 services in Epping, MillPark and Bundoora, and the 561 busstops in East Reservoir and WestfieldPlenty Valley services.

Clean sweepIt’s about time some people on the dole were made to report to local councils and made to clean up parks, streets, etc. Why should working people and ratepayers continually fund those who are not contributing? This country is heading for tough times. The days of money for nothing must stop. Work together.

Grateful thanksWe were so pleased to read the article ‘‘Little Lives Lost’’ (NW, September 11) explaining the caring company Heartfelt, which photographed our dear little granddaughter’s hands being held by us.

Sian had beautiful hands, always creating things and clapping with enjoyment at life. Sian passed away on May 12 this year aged 5½ after suffering a critical asthma attack.

Thank you for showing people that this is a loving and lasting way to remember those dear to us. To Heartfelt goes our gratitude for allowing us these memories.

Free and easyAustralians talk of how ridiculous Russia looks jailing members of the irreverent Pussy Riot, who’ve simply behaved just as arts students across the world do and like many satirists in history. Yet in Australia, following a federal government-instigated review, there are moves afoot to set up a media regulator with the power to jail journalists. The right to free expression and speech should be written into the constitution of every nation, with the single proviso that such does not incite hatred.

COVERSTORY

The spicy aroma tickles the nostrils. A bouquet of heady fl oral, fungi and cinnamon scents, touched with a pinch of citrus, wafts in the air. It’s like taking in the perfume of a fi ne wine but, in fact, you are smelling ancient history.

The aromas come from herbs used in medicinal recipes dating back thousands of years, which are still being used to treat patients at RMIT’s Chinese Medicine Teaching Clinic in Bundoora.

From humble beginnings 18 years ago, RMIT is now Australia’s largest Chinese medicine education and research institution and its Chinese medicine degree is recognised internationally.

It has won multi-million dollar research grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council, the federal government and international industry partners, and pioneered the world’s fi rst master’s degree in medical acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

So it was not by chance that the World Health Organisation set up a Collaborating Centre for Traditional Medicine at RMIT in 2005 to further training and research in traditional medicine. Nor was it an accident that Australia’s fi rst Chinese Medicine Confucius Institute – promoting Chinese culture and language – opened at RMIT two years ago.

‘‘This is where East meets West,’’ says Dr Tony Zhang, the head of RMIT’s Chinese Medicine discipline. ‘‘It is where we take traditional Chinese medicine and test it using modern evidence-based research.’’

Chinese-born Dr Zhang is himself a blend of East and West. His grandfather practised the craft but the discipline skipped a generation and it was Dr Zhang, not his father, who followed the family tradition.

Dr Zhang embraced eastern health care practice and gained a Bachelor of Medicine in China, before going on to study western health, gaining a Master of Public Health

from the University of NSW. He then completed a PhD in complementary traditional medicine at RMIT on combining the knowledge of epidemiology and traditional methods. He studied under Professor Charlie Xue, head of RMIT’s School of Health Sciences, who has been instrumental in driving RMIT to be a leading educator in Chinese medicine and in dispelling doubters.

Chinese medicine focuses on the overall relationships between body systems and organs, and works on the assumption that an imbalance affects the body, making it susceptible to disease. It looks at qi (pronounced chee) or life energy, which fl ows through the body’s meridian – a series of invisible channels through the body. If the life energy becomes blocked, it affects the body’s harmony, creating illness.

If it all sounds a bit fanciful, bear in mind that many of the traditional treatments have been used successfully for more

than 2000 years. RMIT students study and, in their senior years, prescribe treatments such as herbs, acupuncture and acupressure to treat imbalance and restore harmony and health. They treat members of the public at the Chinese medicine teaching clinic, under the supervision of registered Chinese medicine practitioners.

There is order in the herb room at the institute’s Chinese medicine teaching clinic. Here, senior students in the fi ve-year Chinese medicine double degree program, or those studying postgraduate acupuncture or herbal medicine programs practise under supervision.

A bank of fl oor-to-ceiling timber drawers holds hundreds of herbs, labelled neatly with both Chinese and English names.

Dr Zhang slides open one drawer to reveal what appear to be sleeping baby mice. Covered in a pale, soft fuzz, with stems that look like tails, they are magnolia buds – also

known by the more exotic name xin yi hua – used to treat hayfever and sinus problems. The magnolia bud is known for its ‘‘warm’’ properties.

‘‘Herbal medicine works on yin and yang, cold and hot, and in creating a balance,’’ explains Dr Zhang.

Other herbs include crumbling dry leaves and the yellow bark of the cork tree, or huang bai. ‘‘The huang bai clears the heat and is good for infection. You observe the symptoms, say a cough with sputum, and balance it out.’’

Next, he picks up what looks like twisted, dried noodles. They are, in fact, bulrush pith, or deng xin cao. ‘‘We use this to help people with urinary tract infection; it takes out the heat,’’ he explains.

In another drawer are stems of the vine caulis spatholobi, or ji xue teng, sliced into thin sections exposing growth rings in extraordinarily artistic patterns.

In all, there are 400 raw herbs, 180 granulated herbal powders and 50 patented tablets in the herb room. These

are blended according to the patient’s condition, and used as a decoction. Unlike herbal teas or infusions, where hot water is added, decoctions are blended herbs that are boiled to extract the active ingredients and later drunk.

The measurements for each recipe are exact, and Dr Zhang uses scales to mete out slivers of the hot red, orange and yellow saffl ower, or hong hua.

It is not the colour of the next herb that excites him. He reverently picks up a root resembling an old man’s arthritic hands. ‘‘This is one of the most powerful in Chinese herbal medicine. Ginseng,’’ he says.

The Chinese have considered ginseng root a tonic for centuries but at RMIT its properties are being tested by Western methodology.

Dr Zhang says to dispel the West’s distrust of traditional medicine, the school concentrates on ‘‘evidence-based medicine’’ to prove it works. ‘‘It is a relatively new discipline in Australia and in order to teach it, we must teach quality and evidence-based medicine.’’

The National Health and Medical Research Council is funding a study of the use of ginseng extract to treat respiratory disorders known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. RMIT is partnering with Box Hill Hospital and Austin Health to examine whether ginseng helps ease the symptoms of the incurable disease, testing 168 participants with either ginseng or a placebo.

Clinical researcher and PhD candidate Johannah Shergis has been working on the project since 2009, supervised by Professor Xue and Dr Zhang, and says they need another 100 former smokers aged between 40 and 80 to complete the 24-week program. ‘‘It’s totally blind research – we won’t know who was taking the ginseng or the placebo, or the results, until next year,’’ she says.

Shergis is one of 30 PhD Master by Research students undertaking further study in Chinese medicine at RMIT. More than 150 students are studying a double degree in Chinese medicine and human biology. Introduced in 1996, the program is considered on par with the Chinese medicine degree programs in mainland China. A further 90 students are undertaking post-graduate degrees.

As part of the undergraduate program, Shergis spent six months on a clinical internship at Nanjing University Hospital, one of China’s busiest. ‘‘In China, the community is accustomed to Chinese medicine and to having both Western and Eastern medical treatment,’’ she says.

Shergis, whose father is an acupuncturist, was left wanting to learn more after completing a Bachelor of Health Sciences and Bachelor of Applied Science (Chinese medicine) degree in 2008.

‘‘The reason I chose to do a PhD in Chinese medicine was to make a contribution to the understanding of Chinese medicine through evidence-based research,’’ she says.

Another PhD student has just completed a clinical trial on the benefi ts of acupuncture on hayfever, with results expected soon.

Ester Huang, 22, is a third-year student who has two more years of study before she qualifi es with a nationally accredited degree. ‘‘I like it [Chinese medicine] because I believe in it,’’ she says. ‘‘Chinese medicine is helping people heal; it’s a trigger for their body to heal itself.’’ ■

RMIT’s Chinese medicine teaching clinic, at Building 213, McKimmies Road, Bundoora, is open Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 9am to 1pm and Monday to Friday

from 2pm to 6pm. Details: call 9925 7666.

TIMEOUT

For as long as anyone can remember, the Brownlow Medal has been known as

‘‘football’s night of nights.’’ As far as I can tell, that means two things. It’s a chance for gruff, tattooed footballers to stand around awkwardly in rented suits; and it’s a chance for their ‘‘other halves’’ to dress up and pretend they’re off to the Oscars, instead of evading gamblers at Crown.

The prestigious medal, fi rst awarded in 1924, has become more and more made-for-TV every year. Footy players were once the focus; the attention is now on the WAGs. An arrival special before the medal count is an opportunity for footballers’ partners to squeeze in as many plugs for their designer/stylist/hairdresser as they can manage.

If the player himself is quizzed about what he’s wearing, nine times out of 10 he will respond with: a) ‘‘not sure, the club organised it’’ b) ‘‘just

grabbed whatever was around when I jumped out of the shower’’ or c) a plug for his T-shirt label. Try it at home as a drinking game, it’s fun!

Last year, Channel Seven seemed to cross the mark with its ‘‘fashion pod’’ – literally a spinning dais (or rotisserie, as some preferred to call it) in which WAGs were fi lmed from all angles while attempting to hold an uncomfortable smile and not tumble over in their heels.

Once everybody moves inside, things speed up ... that is, if you enjoy sitting through AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou reading the three, two and one votes from each game. Sometimes there are unintended amusements but for the most part it’s about two hours of largely inconsequential television until the count heats up in the later stages of the season.

Seven has all sorts of ‘‘vote predictors’’ based on how their experts think players will poll, and there’s always a touching tribute to recently passed greats (this year’s tribute to Jim Stynes won’t leave a dry eye in the house).

By 11pm, most of the girls are bored and restless, most of the footballers have had too

many beers and everybody raises their glasses to celebrate the winner (last year Dane Swan, pictured, took the gong). A quick speech, a few photos and it’s time to call it a night.

Richmond’s Trent Cotchin, Gold Coast’s Gary Ablett and Essendon’s Jobe Watson are among the favourites for Monday night’s medal.

book★★★★A DARK PLACE TO DIEEd ChattertonRandom HouseThis is the fi rst adult novel by author

Ed Chatterton, who has been writing

children’s books (under the name Martin

Chatterton) for 20 years. It’s a doozy.

Set against the backdrop of a massive

international drug deal between Liverpool

and Australia (Chatterton has lived in

both), the story opens with the discovery

of an artistically arranged corpse on a

cold Liverpool beach. The badly burned

body turns out to be the estranged son

of detective inspector Frank Keane’s

old boss, DI Menno Koopman, who has

moved to Byron Bay. A Dark Place to Die

isn’t your typical crime thriller. Yes, there’s

plenty of violence, cops and thugs, but the

psychological thriller is written more like a

fi lm as the action fl its between continents

and characters. There are some grisly

moments, but Chatterton also explores

issues of family, home and loyalty that

keeps you hanging on until the very end.

album★★★★JARROD CASPERZSomething Mine Melbourne-based singer/songwriter Jarrod

Casperz decided to add guitar strings to

his piano-player bow when sitting down to

write debut album Something Mine. The

10-track package skips between genres,

opening with Music My Life & Death, a

wistfully melodic piece of lyrical honey

with more than a hint of nostalgia to it.

Soothing vocals render Take Me To The

Water a quite fantastically bittersweet

piece of melancholic wordsmithery,

capped off with the long-overdue return

of the sexy sax solo. Heartless Hill slows

tricks down with a bluesier kick of country

to its sharp lyrics. Nobody Save Me

brings in a buzzing electro baseline that

ramps up the album’s second half, while

Superchild offers a surreal Mario Land

pop romp. There’s no denying Something

Mine’s eccentric, eclectic nature, but it’s

all held together by the cohesive core of

Casperz’ mellifl uous voice.

Directorial duo Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who delivered 2006’s runaway hit Little Miss Sunshine return

with the quirk factor amped up for their sophomore effort, Ruby Sparks.

Paul Dano (pictured), the grumpy teen brother in Little Miss Sunshine, plays introverted and neurotic author Calvin. He’s living off the proceeds of his successful debut novel, an instant American classic, but has suffered writer’s block ever since. Mooching around the house, leaving only for short strolls with his new pooch and

to hit the gym with buff brother Harry, played with charm by Chris Messina, Calvin prefers staring absently at his dormant typewriter to forming real-world friendships.

Then one enchanted night he dreams of a kooky vision in red hair, with a fun persona that’s a little too good to be true. Until, that is, he wills her into existence after being encouraged to write about her by his psychologist (Elliott Gould).

First time scribe Zoe Kazan, who also plays the eponymous Sparks, can’t quite sell what is a genuinely interesting fl ight of fancy. It’s telling that when Harry fi rst reads his brother’s manuscript, he challenges Calvin’s unrealistic representation of women. So hamstrung, what we have for at least half the movie is predictably cheesy, tried-and-tested rom com fare.

Things get more interesting as Calvin gradually exposes Ruby to the world, with enjoyably over-the-top cameos by Annette Benning and Antonio Banderas as his parents. Steve Coogan chews the scenery as Calvin’s drunk agent, and there’s a fantastic confrontation with his ex, played by Deborah Ann Woll.

When the fl edgling relationship starts to go stale, a clued-in Harry suggests Calvin re-write Ruby however he wants, and the fi lm suddenly lurches into very dark territory. While far more interesting, it’s a violent jolt, and one that Kazan’s inexperienced scriptwriting fumbles. She hasn’t the courage to follow through, either, with everything tied up neat and tidy by fi lm’s close.

Ruby Sparks is not terrible by any stretch, but it’s certainly no American classic.

Cats and dogs reign in a stage adaptation of the long-running children’s book series Hairy Maclary

at the Plenty Ranges Arts Centre this month.

New Zealand author Lynley Dodd says there is a special pleasure in seeing her famous stories played out in front of children. “It’s tremendous fun. It’s the best thing being in an audience with children,’’ she says. ‘‘There’s plenty of audience involvement. They love to shout out and give answers.”

Dodd had no input in writing or staging the adaptation Hairy Maclary and Friends, but retains the right to correct anything that strays from the book’s intentions.

The show, which sold out at the Sydney Opera House and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, is produced by Scottish company Nonsense Room Productions.

Dodd says the main diffi culty for the company was producing costumes that

recreated the characters as ‘‘human dogs’’. The show relies on narration because

her animals don’t talk. Dodd says the characters, including dalmatian Bottomley Potts (who’s ‘‘covered in spots’’) and dachshund Schnitzel von Krumm (‘‘with a very low tum’’), are loosely based on animals she’s known.

The book series has stretched to 20 volumes, including a recently released book about mischievous black cat Slinky Malinki.

From the outset, Dodd was intent on making the books’ rollicking rhymes a good read for adults as well as children.

‘‘As a child I loved the musicality of language. It’s got to be fun and have rhythm. ’’ ■

All of which begs the question, just how can cars get any safer?

Technology that’s coming will take care of you in slow moving traffi c, so that your car automatically follows the car in front and avoids a fender bender while merging. Your headlights will automatically lower, giving you the maximum distance they can while not blinding

Just how safe can we get? Safe as houses? I’d rather be safe as cars, thanks. You’re far more likely to be killed or injured at home

than in a modern car.Consider the latest Volvos. They have lights to

tell you if there’s a car in your blind spot. They warn you if you’re straying out of your lane, the cruise control won’t let you get too close to the car in front and they’ll brake automatically if you’re closing too fast on a solid object ahead of you.

They’ll even apply the brakes if a dog runs out in front of you. Or, indeed, a pedestrian. Further, if the car fi gures you’re not applying suffi cient

pressure on the brake pedal it will up the force itself.

A number of other brands are introducing this new technology and similar ideas, all of which are making cars much safer. Add them to anti-lock braking systems to stop you quicker in emergencies, stability control to reduce the chances of skidding, and seatbelts and airbags and you have a very effective self-defence package.

The effectiveness of all this technology is unarguable. In Europe Volvo has been studying accidents involving its cars for more than 40 years and says that the risk of being injured in one has been reduced by 50 per cent since the year 2000.

Further, the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says automatic braking technology, fi rst seen in Volvos, has brought a reduction in collision frequency of up to 22 per cent. Another independent safety body in Europe concludes that cars with adaptive cruise control to maintain minimum distances between you

and the car in front, as well as collision warning systems, reduce the risk of rear-ending another car by up to 42 per cent.

Some years ago Volvo announced an objective of recording no fatalities or serious injuries in its new cars by 2020. It seemed exceptionally ambitious at the time but now you have to allow that it may just be possible.

Step inside and prepare to be amazed by the beautiful, ridiculously broad, parquetry entrance hall, which sweeps inwards towards a vast, circular bar at the heart of the ground fl oor – perfect for pulling up a pew and fi xing yourself a drink after a hard day’s work.

With a slick, dark stone bar top and plenty of room for glassware, it’s an immediately arresting focal point that gives the property a real sense of character.

The slick parquetry extends throughout the expansive, open-plan living space surrounding this central bar, which dominates the ground fl oor. A formal dining space to the right of the bar is roomy enough to easily accommodate a table for 12.

On the far side of the bar is a more relaxed meals area and vast, stone-topped kitchen with striking views out towards the hills. With an island bench, plenty of work space, mammoth DeLonghi oven with six-burner stovetop, Asko range and spacious corner pantry, it’s

a contemporary kitchen designed to make feeding a crowd a breeze.

Cream and purple cabinetry with frosted glass panels add a dash of colour.

A well-proportioned bedroom sits in the front right-hand corner of the property with two tall windows, walk-in wardrobe and large, peach-hued en suite with turquoise mosaic wall shower. Across the hallway sits a spacious study.

Beyond the huge family room to the rear are two further bedrooms, both with built-in wardrobes, separated by a communal bathroom with chocolate-coloured fl oor tiles and a separate laundry with side yard access.

Upstairs from the central bar you come to the huge main bedroom with fantastic views from windows on three sides of the property. Thick royal purple carpet is luxuriously soft underfoot, with the room benefi ting from its own en suite and roomy walk-in wardrobe, as well as allowing access out on to the balcony above the residence’s front door.

As if this wasn’t enough, head down from that central bar and you’ll uncover another self-contained apartment with its own entry.

A good-sized bedroom is joined by a study, storeroom with wine cellar, bathroom and an enormous open-plan lounge and meals area with a second kitchen. Perfect for guests, or perhaps the oldest child, it also allows direct access to the double garage and vast under-house storage area.

The well-maintained garden out back, split over multiple levels, is also a treat. A decked balcony steps down, following the twist of a cascading water feature that bubbles soothingly over smooth pebbles, like a waterfall.

A vast, covered, alfresco dining area is surrounded by the well-kept backyard, lush with shrubbery, trees and with spectacular views out to the hills. With spring warming the air again, it’s a wonderful space to enjoy friends, family and the sun as it comes around again. ■

Rising up in the worldThink big, enjoy the views and know that you have arrived
