Hello again – now we are into spring and so
far the first day looks amazing. No clouds
and lots of sun. I am looking out the window
and am watching a man negotiate crossing
St. John street with a walker and I am think-
ing how lucky I am to have all my bits work-
ing enough that I have
no need for such things
in this stage of my life.
I can still get down and
dirty as required, even though the getting up
is a lot less eloquent than previously. My
legs do take me places I want to go, perhaps
not as fast or as easy as ten years ago, but
they do still get me there. Plus I can also see
and hear enough to be grateful, regardless of
needing glasses, buggers they are as far as
photography goes, but they are better than
not seeing at all. Is it spring inviting this
thought, who knows, but I do know it is en-
thusing me to get the camera out again and
head towards beaches.
Where are all of you in your photography
journey? Hopefully exploring and enjoying
your abilities to utilize the camera when the
opportunity arises. Maybe even sharing your
images with others or looking for something
different in your work. We all travel a path
in some ways that may be as we went it or
sometimes we have to turn corners and move
around obstacles to get to destinations, cho-
sen by us or given to us, as we move through
the landscape.
Thinking of times when I have been
totally frustrated,
even angry that I cannot
fathom out something or
am struggling to get
through a chosen or given path, I remember
the satisfaction that comes when you manage
to achieve what you are struggling with. Or
alternately be happy to say goodbye to it and
change direction if achievement is not possi-
ble. Camera Clubs, organisations are all like a
path we tread and work our ways through
belonging and/or visiting for a time. Each of
us finds a place within the society or club
that suits us. We are not all the same and do
not need to see the club in the same way.
This is much like taking photos. I could
guarantee that 50 people
standing in a space near
to each other would take
50 different images, even
if one person stood in an-
other person’s footprints,
the photo they took,
would not be an exact
copy of the person before
them.
We do see photos that
others have taken and
say why didn’t I see this
or take this at the time. It can
often send us back to the same
place to re-take the photo that
we thought we should have
taken in the first place. This can be about
learning and taking us on our journey in pho-
tography. But the beauty of it is that we are
all different. Science tells us we have our
own unique DNA, something that cannot be
found in someone else. Yes we all can have
bits of DNA that are the same as another, but
the total in each of us is an original, not to be
found in someone else. In this present day
anyway, who knows what the future will
bring. So I guess it is perfectly understand-

able that we all like different things, par-
ticipate in things differently, do things
differently and take different types of im-
ages. This is not wrong. This quote by
Elliott Erwitt sums up what I am saying
and if you click on his name you will find
more information about him.
“To me, photography is an art of observation.
It’s about finding something interesting in an
ordinary place...I’ve found it has little to do
with the things you see and everything to do
with the way you see them.” Elliott Erwitt
And in talking about favourite images,
especially my own, I totally relate to this.
“Which of my photographs is my favourite?
The one I’m going to take tomorrow”. – Imo-
gen Cunningham

Until next time, keep looking. Maybe, if
your search is taking you in this direction,
one day you will find your perfect image.
As far as I am concerned, hopefully I
never will.

News & Views ... Cont. Editor’s note .... Welcome to the first DRUM
of Spring. The winds of seasonal change are still blowing strongly but colour is appearing along with the bright green that typifies our Tasmanian countryside providing great ‘rebirth’ photographic opportunities.
Having missed the last few club meetings I am probably not in the best place to comment but the number of entries in some of the recent club com-petitions have been, to me, disappointingly low.
Putting your images forward in club comps is the best way to measure your early development as a photographer. Based on my experiences I encour-age all to ‘have a go’.
Our club continues to receive external recognition. The 2012 APS Gallery has accepted five Tasmanian images, three by NTCC members—Ruth Timperon, Felix Staub and Anne O’Connor. Congratulations to all three.

Photoshop online tutorials
For those who are interested in online tutorials
using Photoshop Elements and Photoshop
CS 4 or 5 you might like to have a look at the
watchphotoshop.tv. website.
Peter Wear lives near Brisbane and has made a
series of very good tutorials which are avail-
able for download for $34.95. His tutorials
are clear and easy to follow, and use both
Photoshop Elements and the full version of
Photoshop.
I am not on commission, but would thor-
oughly recommend these tutorials for anyone
who is just starting with Photoshop, or even
for those who are further down the track but
want to learn more.

Recently you would have received an email from Rod with the application forms for this competition which has a closing date in December this year, instead of around April next year. In the past this competition has been associated with the June Tasmanian Photo-graphic Federation meeting (TPF). At this years June meeting, the TPF committee opted to change this for certain reasons. Now the competition is to be associ-ated with the March meeting each year instead of June. The reasons were based on the difficulty in us-ing the March meeting for a club competition. Being that a number of clubs do not have a January meeting and getting images together after Christmas was often difficult, based on the time frame of needing the im-ages by the middle of February, which would have been the closing date for the March competition. In-stead they opted for swapping the June POY to March. On top of that, the decision was made to have the cut-off time for entries in December, which means that you will need to get your entries in for next year at the end of this year. This would also give the club
more time to process the entries and get them sent off to a mainland group for judging over the Christmas break. They would then come back sometime next year before the March get together, which will be hosted next year by Devonport Club. On the entry form that Devonport sent out, it still states they will be displayed at the June meeting. This is an error, possi-bly because they had revamped the previous forms and failed to notice this was still present when they were sent out. Underneath this they have added March as the presentation and display month. The June meeting will relate only to the competition be-
tween the clubs, which was normally run in March.
So no, you are not totally confused, instead you are
the subjects of change with this year's closing date being almost on top of this year's competition. This means that there will be quite a long time in the lead in to March, 3 months instead of the usual 2 months from April to June. But it does mean that the competition is closing four months earlier than previously. This year
instead of next year.
The Photographer of the Year or POY as it gets
called, is about a competition between individual pho-tographers within the State, it is not related to clubs. The POY requires you to supply four individual images, all addressing different concepts, (ie, one por-trait, one landscape, one social documentary and one nature) Just one example but you can submit to other concepts, not specifically these. The competition tests the photographer's ability to take images on different subjects, (4) rather than be good at only one type of imagery. There are four different competitions, large colour prints, large mono prints, small prints and edi's. You may enter only one category or enter all four cate-
gories. That is up to you.
HOWEVER, it is important to take note of the closing
date, being 20th November 2012
