Outing to Casino Drill Hall & Military Museum
17th
June 2018
After leaving Brown’s Creetk car park we made our way through the Lismore CBD, past the
Airport then on to the Caniaba turnoff and through Caniaba to the Casino Drill Hall Military
Museum. The museum consisted of military exhibits from wars dating back to WWI and
through to the Vietnam war of the 1960’s.There were many photographs, models of war
planes, ships, bullets, shells and items of interest too numerous to mention. After morning
tea in the sunshine at the entrance to the hall we made our way through the countryside to
the Coraki Hotel for lunch.
Lunch at the hotel was very enjoyable and during lunch a Poet appeared and gave us many
renditions of poems writen by Banjo Patterson & Henry Lawson and his powerful renditions
made us pause in conversing and sit up and take notice. The day was very interesting
and enjoyable and our thanks go to Graeme and Sharin Gill for organising the day for us.

Koala Capers
The NRVVCC’s ‘Mid-Week Muster’ held 6-6-18 was attended by eleven and a half
Members!
How can that be you ask? Well, to be fair young Willow Middleton isn’t old enough to
drive yet, so we reckon Willow counts as ‘half’ a member. Seems fair enough, half
price for kids!
The Koala Care Centre, Rifle Range Rd, Lismore was the venue for our visit. Staffed
by volunteers but with one employee to manage the office and paperwork, the Centre
provides care and management for sick or injured Koala throughout our region. The
centre takes visitors each Wednesday morning. Ring Clare 66 21 4664.
Bev, a knowledgeable volunteer took us through a power point presentation and
answered many questions from the group.
Informed detail of ST diseases left us wondering about the future of this iconic native
animal.
It’s obvious that the centre could use financial help and help from volunteers. Bev
took us into the holding areas for recovering animals where we watched volunteer
Des introducing fresh cut Eucalyptus leaf to the recovering Koalas.
Eric Davison moved a vote of thanks on our behalf.
Members attending were Narelle and Chris Loadsman, Narelle Middleton, Jess and
Willow Middleton, Allan Keys and Dave Hancock, Steven George, Eric Davison,
Renate Gravert, Peter and Bev Henson.
Scones by Beverley, Anzacs by Narelle Loadsman, both yummy, thanks.
The hirsute Eric and a furry friend!
Manpower Help for Horsepower In Ballina’s First Cars
Old cars that were driven around the streets of Ballina in the first days of the automobile
were recalled in an address by Mr. Charles Bewers to a meeting of the Ballina Rotary Club.
The first car, was owned by Dr. Donellan and was said to use more manpower than
horsepower due to the frequency of its breakdowns. Mr. Bewers recalled however that a
really stallwart performer was a De Dion Buton owned by an early schoolteacher, Mr.
Morgan. The car regularly made the then rugged journey to Alstonville, where Mr. Morgan’s
daughter was a teacher.
Mr. Charles Schaeffer said that he was teaching at Alstonville at that time and could
remember riding in Mr. Morgan’s car on many occasions. Mr. Bewers said that a Reo,
owned by Baggot Brothers, made a historic journey to Brisbane on the occasion of the visit
of the Duke of Windsor, then the Prince of Wales. Messrs. Bagot Brothers took Mr. and Mrs.
Roy Lang, but because of the hazards of the journey, Mrs. Lang was taken only only as far
as Murwillumbah in the car and proceeded to Brisbane by train.
They met Mrs. Lang at South Brisbane and were so pleased with the performance of the car
they returned via Toowoomba and the highlands.
“This old Reo” said Mr. Bewers, was later turned into a timbr truck at the mill and
remainded in service for many years.”
Memories of Mr. Charley Brewer of Ballina
My father had a Hotel at the top of Brewers Hill and cars climbing the hill in the early days
lost considerable water from the radiator. My job was to refill them, charging one penny. I
remember the first time I ever rode in a car. It was in 1906 and it was owned by Mr. Bill
Corbbet. I was a hero at school after my experience as the children those days would run a
mile to see a car and much further to ride in one. Many a time while driving a car I had to
use the upholstery trim from the doors as sleeves when repairing punctures and blowouts
which were quite common in early motoring.
In 1919 I drove a Ford T to Sydney and took four days to complete the journey. The first
night’s stop was at Coffs Harbour, the second night Taree, the third, Maitland and finally,
Sydney. In 1915 I drove a Benz bus between Lismore and Ballina, returning daily. It reqired
changing gear seventy times on the trip up.

LOOKING BACK To 1917
Perth to Cairns in Baby Austin
Mr. T Crouch arrived in Lismore on Tuesday in his baby Austin car, on the way to Cairns
having travelled from Perth. For the past 18 months he has journeyed all over Western
Australia. Leaving Perth in January, his expenses to date amount to 11 pound, as he has
been living on wild game and fish en route, and on many occasions picked up a passenger
who was willing to put in a gallon of two of petrol for a lift. An engineer by trade, Mr.
Crouch, who was for some time engaged by the Sunshine Harvesting Co.in Western
Australia, found himself out of employment owing to the depression, decided on his novel
and cheap way of seeing Australia. Wherever possible he performs work for a day or two at
his trade; in fact, he will do any class of work to keep the “wolf form the door.” He has not
slept in a bed for over 18 months, and he is quite happy and healthy, and narrates some
rather interesting experiences of his travels.

AFTERNOON DELIGHT
The only way to pull off a Sunday afternoon “quickie” with their 8 year old son in the
apartment was to send him out on the balcony with ice cream and lollies and tell him to
report on all the neighbourhood activities. He began his commentary as his parents put their
plan into operation.
“There’s a car being towed from the parking lot” he shouted.
A few moments passed “An ambulance just drove by”
A few moments later “Looks like the Andersons have company”, he called out, “Mat’s
riding a new bike.”
A few moments later “Looks like the Saunders are moving. Jason’s on his skateboard.”
A few more moment “The Coopers are having some nookie the same as you two!!
Startled, his mother & father shot up in bed! Dad cautiously called out, “how do you know
what they are doing?”
“Jimmy Cooper is standing on his balcony with ice cream and lollies the same as me.”
