What is Minibaja?Minibaja is an intercollegiate design competition that began in 1976. The Society of Automotive

Engineers (SAE) hosts several events worldwide; and three in the United States. The students goal is todesign, build, and race a prototype all-terrain vehicle. The competition is intended to simulate real-worlddesign, marketing, and business challenges.

The Car:Briggs & Stratton Motor Company sponsors the Minibaja

series by providing a ten horsepower Intek Model 20 engineto each team. This engine is a requirement of the competition, and cannot be modified in any way. The competitors mustdesign their chassis, suspension, and drivetrain around thisengine, as well as the stringent safety rules set by SAE.

The Competitions:Each individual race presents its own challenges. Cars that

compete in the East competition must be completelyamphibious, crossing lakes and ponds over thirty feet deep.Cars that are designed for the Midwest competition are typically much smaller and lighter, because theyare raced on a groomed motocross track. The West competition is known for its especially rough terrain, part of which is a rock crawl event. For the past two years the Northeastern University team hascompeted in all three of these events.

The Challenges:Prior to the competition, the teams must submit a design report and cost report to SAE officials. The

design reports are judged on originality and innovation, suspension and brake system, power train, structural design, craftsmanship, operator comfort, feasibility for mass production, serviceability, andflotation and water propulsion. The cost reports are judged on prototype cost, manufacturing cost, documentation, and an optional overview. A strong pair of reports is essential to boost a teams overallstanding in the competition.

The teams must put their cars through rigorous tests at the competitions. First, the cars are thoroughlyinspected for safety and design. They are then raced through a number of qualifying events: top speed,

acceleration, braking, land maneuverability, water maneuverability, tractor pull, hill climb, mud bog, rock crawl, and suspension. Finally, every car still standing is raced for four hours in the competitionscenterpiece endurance race.

In addition to the design and testing, the competition also presents the challenge of fundraising. Ourteam is wholly responsible for raising all of the funds to continue competing in Minibaja. Tooling, construction materials, and travel expenses must be covered by either material or monetary donations tothe team.

The Mini Baja competition is an excellent learningexperience that requires the students to push their creative

and engineering ability to the limit. The project providesstudents with significant challenges that require completecommitment and determination to overcome. NortheasternUniversity has supported a Mini Baja team for 20 years, and the competition is always a remarkable experience.

The Mini Baja Project is beneficial to all thosedirectly or indirectly involved. The objective of

the project is to present engineering students withthe opportunity to apply their classroom skills toreal world engineering problems and tasks.Although the project is geared towardsengineering students, a student from any majorcan participate and apply their particular trainingand skills. Students who participate in theprogram gain experience in mechanical design, fabrication, testing, communication, and projectand labor-time management. The team memberscarry the engineering technical and managerial

experience gained from this project into theprofessional world.

Northeastern University is proud to display the logo of our sponsors on the vehicle. These sponsorsbecome honorary members of the N. U. Mini Baja Pit Crew. They are as essential to the success of theproject as the students who design, build, drive, and maintain the vehicle. Sponsors of the Mini Baja

team gain exposure to a unique group of dedicated and disciplined college students.

The vehicle is displayed at all open houses and engineering events on the Northeastern Universitycampus, usually once a week. During special events where the vehicle is displayed, the vehicleimmediately becomes the focal point of the attention of alumni, future students, current students, andtheir parents. The vehicle is proudly displayed before and after each competition, where local andnational newspapers can capture the dedicated spirit of the students. The vehicle is also seen in theUniversity newspaper and has been on the cover of the Northeastern University College of EngineeringHandbook and Northeastern University website. An article about the team and the car has also beenfeatured in the Universitys annual Engineering Magazine. The magazine is sent to Engineering alumniand is available at the University.

The vehicle is evaluated and awarded points by experienced SAE judges throughout the competition.A grueling four-hour endurance competition takes place during the three-day meet. Only a fraction ofthe vehicles that enter the race will endure the entire competition. A complete list of the maximumpoints awarded for each event is listed below:

Northeastern University has placed in the top ten every year since 1998, with the competition fieldconsisting of over 200 schools. A full summary of the point standings is available on our website:www.numotorsports.com.
