The York Rotary recognized Northeastern juniors Autumn Wil-hide and Christopher Lee as Students of the Month during their April 1 luncheon meeting. Autumn was accompanied by her par-ents Gregory and Crystal Wilhide, grandmothers Judy Wertz and Lorreta Wilhide. and her school counselor Kris Hach. Christopher was accompanied by his mother Susan Misiolek-Lee and his school counselor Bethany Gamber.

Jen Fertenbaugh, her student teacher Katherine Lindner, and Eric Bierker helped prepare Autumn and Christopher for their speeches. Autumn spoke about her passion for animals and Chris-topher shared about his life changing experience at HOBY, the Hugh O'Brian Leadership Seminar, last Spring. Both Autumn and Christopher did a great job on their speeches and we are very proud of their hard work, achievements, and personal character.

Special thanks to Matt Gay for hosting and students Chris Wickline and Coulson Miller for providing assis-tance with all technology used in the auditorium.

Overall, it was a great evening and everyone got to take home an ABC27 Weather Almanac that were signed at the end of the evening.

Northeastern received a ton of positive press from ABC27 by the weather segment being broad-casted live at 5, 5:30, and 6 pm from our parking lot. Overall, there were about 100 attendees including many community members and the local Girl Scout troop. The Girl Scout troop also held a public survey on air quality as attendees entered the auditorium. The forum started by discussing record breaking cold lows this winter, continued with how the weather is actually forecasted, and concluded with tornado formation, historical area events, and what to do in case of severe weather outbreaks.

NHS art teachers Ms. Gainer and Mrs. Schedin and their students have registered for the York County Solid Waste Authority’s Earth Day Recycled Art Contest. The students will be designing art from trash. The public reception and awards ceremony will be held Wednesday, April 22 at 6:30 PM at YorkArts’ CityArt Gallery. We are looking forward to seeing some of the great artwork created by Northeastern students!

Two NHS students will be competing in York County’s Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program! Jun-iors Emily Myers and Ashli Glatfelter are both preparing for the event. Placing an emphasis on excellence, this program recognizes and rewards young women for scholastic achievement. This year’s 50th Distinguished Young Women Program will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at Central York High School. We wish both of them the best of luck!

Third Graders at Mt. Wolf Elementary recently completed their Annual Math Madness Competition. Students in each 3rd grade class completed math problems individually and in small teams for nine days in a row. Each day, after completing their problem of that day, the students would gather together and find the correct solu-tion to the problem with their teachers. The following day, they would be presented with a new problem of the day. At the conclusion of the competition, students were recognized at an awards assembly. Students earning the highest points were awarded with a trophy (for places 1-3) or a medal (for places 4-10). Congratulations to all of our third graders on a job done well, and especially to our top ten finishers! Thanks to our third grade team for their work to organize this fun event each year!

6th Grade students at SBI are celebrating Youth Art Month by creating a permanent installation piece for their building. The artwork is based off the history of Friendship Quilts. Students learned that during the Westward Expansion many friends and families moved westward in hopes of land ownership and a better life. Not knowing if they were ever going to see each other again, loved ones would decorate squares of fabric and piece them to-gether to make a beautiful quilt. SBI students are putting a wire twist on the tradition. After learning about the characteristics of the wire medium such as being measured in gauges and the importance of using annealed wire for their armature, each student decorated his or her square in as a remembrance of each student as they broaden their horizons and move on to Middle School. Upon completion these squares will be joined to make a beautiful installation piece that will be on display in the Art Lobby of SBI.

Conewago received a grant from Longwood Garden for our second graders to tour the garden and partici-pate in a 90 minute program about recycling. They saw a real tree house, plants that grew on walls, car-nivorous plants, and planted their own corn seed. The smells and sights of the garden were amazing and something the children will always remember.
