Thanks to the Mill Creek Tunnel (which is 20 feet in diameter and 41,400 feet long!), annual CSO in this watershed will be reduced by 97%!
CSO?This photo of Mill Creek prior to the construction of the Mill Creek Tunnel shows a discharge of CSO into the environment.
The CSO outfall was sealed in 2003, eliminating discharges at this location.
Since 1972, the District’s tunnel projects have DRASTICALLY REDUCED the amount of CSO released into our region’s waterways:
1972 9 billion
2009 4.5 billion
These important projects are funded ENTIRELY by our customers’ sewer bills!
what is
Cleveland’s earliest sewers are “combined sewers.”

WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT?
WHY IS CSO A PROBLEM?
An expert in
CSO reduction, the District
has worked to eliminate CSOs
since 1972.
COMBINED SEWER
gallons per year gallons per year
In this combined sewer under East 107th Street, both rain and untreated wastewater flow in the top trough. In heavy rains, the combined water overflows into the lower tunnel, through an outfall, and then into the environment.
