Wayne King receives DoubleHonors in Annual Third CoastNational Art Competition andExhibition

New Hampshire photographerand artist Wayne D. King hasbeen chosen among the honoredphotographers in the annual Artcompetition sponsored by TheK Space Contemporary ArtGallery of Corpus ChristiTexas. Two of Kings images

were chosen from among morethan 524 images submitted by38 artists from across the US.Only two artists had more thanone image selected.

Incessantly scouring the uni-verse (and my back yard) forthe weird, the wacky, and thestupid so you dont have to.

So... I was online looking atsome pictures of groups of peo-

ple who work in various places(I miss that). They all look soyoung! You know, that got methinking thatyourbusiness maynot be in compliance with TheAge Discrimination inEmployment Act (ADEA)!Maybe you could hire me for aday or two a week so when such

pictures are taken, you can haveat least one old person there andat least appear to be in compli-ance.

I recently got a phone call aboutrenewing a magazine subscrip-tion. I didnt have a copy handy,and I wasnt sure when itexpired, so I asked the person to

please call back. Meanwhile,

coincidentally, I received a $10-off e-coupon, so I went aheadand used that service to renew.In early July, the latest issuecame, and I looked at the label,which said SEP14. Good thing Irenewed..., BUT when I lookedfurther at the label, I also saw

N/D18. I am guessing the nextissue will read N/D19. Theissue date was from this comingSept. (even though it was earlyJuly). I am hoping I live longenough to read them all....

There was a piece going around

Facebook that stated a HobbyLobby manager stoned a gayemployee to death on thegrounds that he is within hisreligious rights to do so. I guess

people can (and do) post virtu-ally anything, and, no matter

what it is, there are alwaysthose who will believe it. (Bythe way, did you see Obamas

phony college ID? And... hewants to implant us all withmicrochips! Really!)

Strange supposedly true laws:(1) You must warn buyers ifyour house is thought to behaunted. (CA), (2) In Boulder,its illegal to roll a boulder on

public property. (CO... butapparently its legal there to rollother things). (3) You arentallowed to harvest seaweed atnight (NH I wonder if order-ing sushi at night qualifies). (4)Falsely claiming to be marriedis a crime (but falsely claimingto be single is okay?) (N.Dak).

(5) In Middlebury, more thanone person cannot ride on askateboard at a time (VT).Bonus: Owning explosive golf

balls is a crime (MA).

I sat down to finish what wasleft in the container and startedreading it. It was Friendlys andcalled Sundae Extreme. Theflavor was Chocolate FudgeBrownie, and it was Loadedwith the Stuff You Love. Butthere was one thing missing itwas not ice cream but aChocolate Frozen Dairy

Dessert. Whats up withthat??? There has to be a rea-son....

The best example of a Love-Hate relationship is thosevideos that surprise familymembers with returning sol-diers! I love the reunions buthate that they even have to take

place... if you know what Imean.

As if Big Smo wasntenough, I just saw an ad for anobnoxious Lone Star Lady.Looks like another real winner(*eye roll)! Seriously, whowatches these shows? Identifyyourselves NOW!

So how hot was it? I was stag-gering around the Hatch Plaza

parking lot back on July 2 andneeded to get out of the heat, soI ended up in an air-conditionedRed Cross Bloodmobile. I leftwith a t-shirt and coupons fortwo free pan pizzas (and mayhave saved up to three lives). A

pretty good trade, if I do say so.

I did something for the firsttime in my life: I watched anentire soccer game! ThanksUSA!

LIVE FREE OR DIE (or not)!Following a recent stateSupreme Court decision, the

NH Department of Safety hasbeen drafting new rules aboutwhat can and cant go onlicense plates. Until July 21, theDMV has been waiting. It cantfollow the old rules, which thecourt ruled were too vague. Thecase involved a man who suedafter the DMV rejected hisrequest for a plate that saidCOPS LIE. The new rules

ban obscenities, references to

certain body parts, sexual acts,illegal activities, drugs, gangsor bigotry in any language, for-

Fish and Game urges individu-als and businesses to removeany bear attractant from theirproperty. Bears seek out the

highest quality foods in theirhome range. When naturalfoods are low in quality (fat and

protein), bears will seek outfoods like birdseed, poultrygrain, pet foods, and garbagewhich are higher in fat, proteinand carbohydrates. Be proac-tive by removing birdfeedersduring spring and summer,secure garbage and protect

poultry and livestock with elec-tric fence. Think about long-term solutions to common

problems.

"Above all, the public mustunderstand that it is illegal tointentionally feed bears in New

Hampshire and you can befined if caught," said Timmins."Intentional feeding causesextreme problems and is highlydetrimental to bears. This activ-ity habituates bears, which mayresult in the bear having to bedestroyed due to negative

behavior. Once a bear becomesaccustomed to human areas andfoods, the behavior is nearlyimpossible to break. If yourespect bears, keep them wildand don't tempt them withfood."

This issue is a major concernfor Timmins, who issued aheartfelt statement in Mayexplaining that intentional feed-

ing, and the public's unwilling-ness to be diligent with com-mon food attractants, had creat-ed nuisance behaviors thatcaused Fish and Game to haveto kill multiple mature bearsthis spring (seehttp://www.wildnh.com/Newsroom/2014/Q2/bear_human_conflicts_ATimmins.html).

The bad news is that since thatmessage went out, things havenot improved that much. Thenumber of bears shot by home-owners this year, mostly at

unsecured chicken pens, ishigher than ever. "Staff fromthe Department and USDAWildlife Services has been busyaddressing bear conflicts overthe past several weeks. It isastonishing how many of theseconflicts are the direct result ofgarbage, birdfeeders and chick-ens," said Timmins."Intentional backyard feeding isnot the only problem. Peopleappear not to realize they arecontributing to bear/humanconflicts by having open or

plastic-topped dumpsters, unse-cured household garbage, birdfeeders or unprotected poultryand livestock."

Campers and hikers can avoid

conflicts with bears by main-taining a clean campsite andstoring food, garbage and aro-matic items, like toothpaste andother toiletries, out of reach of

bears (not in your tent!) If carcamping, keep all food andcoolers in a building or vehiclewith the windows rolled up. Ifcamping at a remote site, bringrope to properly hang theseitems, or use food canisters; theWhite Mountain NationalForest Androscoggin RangerDistrict in Gorham has a limitednumber of bear-resistant foodcanisters available to borrow;v i s i thttp://www.fs.fed.us/r9/white.

What can we play for youSky? The question came fromthe two young talented musi-cians gracing the stage of theGreen House in Warren a fewweeks back. And with out skip-ping a beat I replied AllmanBrothers, Jessica! Without apause Dane Anderson and TylerWayne launched into one of themost legendary and complicat-

ed instrumentals ever recorded.And of course they nailed it!The amazing thing is this wasdone with just two acoustic gui-tars when the original versionboasted at least a seven pieceband. And this is not the onlynumber they pull off with twoguitars and make it sound like a

huge ensemble. It is just one ofthe plethora of reasons youshould put the Whiskey Geeseon your must see list and soon!

Originally using the nameCluck & Chuck Tyler andDane spent quite a bit of timewriting and recording in a cot-tage on Goose pond and duringthat time would occasionallyindulge in a beverage of choice,which led to the name, The

Whiskey Geese (I'll let you fig-ure that one out!) And plans forthe future include the release ofthese seasons recorded over the

past few year to be titledSongs from the Goose.Always in pursuit of perfection,this record has been a long timein coming. I for one cannot wait

to hear it!

Tyler and Dane are both localnorth country guys who foundthemselves furthering theirmusical education at BerkleeCollege of Music in Bostonwhich led to many writing andrecording sessions in the dorms.Tyler graduated in 2003 andDane in 2004. The years of

practice and education comeblasting through any time youhave a chance to see these guys.Although billed as a duo quiteoften the sound will be rounded

out with the addition of a drum-mer, Jared Steer, Blake Goedde,Jon Fisher, and Aaron Moreyhave all played with theWhiskey Geese.

Aside from the phenomenal andmeticulous guitar playing, bothof these young men have stellarvocal ability and the harmoniesmesmerizing! And to add to themix Tyler will also pull out aMelodica which is a small key-

board wind instrument, all thewhile playing guitar andsinging. Ask them to play A

When you are Will's age chal-lenges come and go. It's natu-ral. It's the cost of admissionfor being elderly. I understandthat. Nothing is guaranteed.Nothing. So we take each dayas it comes.

On some of those days, he'ssleeping so soundly, I checkhim to make sure he's stillbreathing because one neverknows. On those days we takeeach hour as it comes.

Our contract is a simple one.I've told him from the begin-ning that I like having him here,that he's welcome to stickaround for as long as he wants,but I also remind him it'salways up to him. This is hislife to live and to leave when hewishes.

Last night he stumbled out ofthe bedroom. He was having adifficult time with his breath-

ing. Outside the air was hot,thick as syrup, even after the

sun went down. Inside, the airconditioners had been on allday. It was cool but not cold.

I had been sitting on the couch

with Atticus but when I metWill halfway he wanted to bepicked up. I held him and helooked me in the eyes. It's iron-ic, those cloudy, old, mostly-

blind eyes say so much whenwe come face to face and he's inmy arms. People talk abouthow beautiful Will's eyes are,

but mostly they are talkingabout his lashes. But his eyes,those cloudy orbs that dontwork very well, really are beau-tiful on their own.

I came close to texting Rachaelto ask her to meet us at NorthCountry Animal Hospital, but Iheld off for a few minutes.Instead, I took him outside. Hecoughed and he choked. We

got Atticus, stuffed a few thingsin my backpack and led by myheadlamp, we walked throughthe ferns and the undergrowthdown to the river.

I lit candles and placed them onsome of the rocks. Some wereCitronella to ward off the bugs.I turned on music on my iPhoneand plugged it into a smallwooden speaker. Lately, I've

been listening to various sound-tracks over and over again. Themelodies help my writing. Themusic flows into me, just as theEllis River flows down from ofthe mountains and over myankles and by the yard.

Atticus sat on his flat rock and

watched as fireflies flashed andglowed around him and all over

the river. They are like starsamong us, dancing, daring to becloser to us than to the rest ofthe heavenly firmament.

I held Will. Even in the dark-ness I could see his eyes look-ing into mine. I could hear therattle of his chest.

Nothing is guaranteed. Nothingbut this moment. And thatdoesnt go just for the elderly.It goes for all of us. I wasreminded of a sign in one of theAppalachian Mountain ClubHuts: Remember, you aredying.

Under an orange moon seenthrough a gap in the shadowytrees above us, I carried Will tothe middle, where the land risesand the water is shallow. It'sthe same place he sat yesterdayin the high heat during late

morning. I slowly lowered him.The way his body relaxed intomy arms reflects the trust he'sregained in the two years he's

been with us.

I placed him in the cool waterand then I sat in it behind him,my legs on either side of him togive him balance. Slowly hesat as well. Then lowered therest of his body. I could hearhis little tongue lapping at themountain waters, drinking it in.

Then there was nothing. Wejust sat. His body pushed upagainst my right leg and he layhis head atop my right shin.

His body relaxed. HIs breathing

slowed.

Just upstream an owl hooted atus. Mostly though, it was justthe music from our little speak-er and the song of the river

playing together. A sweet sym-

phony made by man and nature.I have no idea how long we satin the water but by the time westood up and I wrapped Will ina towel, everything was goodagain. Will was breathing regu-larly. His body shivered as Icarried him up the slight hill,through the ferns and the fallentrees, over the small tumble ofrocks, on the same pathAragorn and the other bearsoften take to our yard from theriver.

We climbed the stairs, Atticusin the lead. Right outside ourdoor, a large spider was hover-ing overhead. I remind her shecan stay, but to give us space

and I do this by blowing softlyon her. She retreats to this littleroof above our deck and eachmorning when I arise, her webnever seems to get in our way,as it did the first few nights.

Now she keeps it above ourheads.

Inside, I dried Will off and saton the floor with him. My backwas to the couch and Atticus layhis head on my shoulder towatch. I picked up the water

bowl for Will to take anotherdrink. Then I passed it up toAtticus. When they were donewe all sat together. Then we allfell asleep together. Atticusabove us, Will in my arms. Meon the floor.

I woke up a couple of hours

later, Will still in my Atticuss chin still on my sder. There was a heanoise outside. Loud and pful and relentless. A delu

rain on our metal roof aboThis morning, when we up, the air was crystal clea
