Northbrook Notes October 2013 Northbrook Presbyterian Church Newsletter “Live the Love of Jesus Christ” We are Open. Rational. Compassionate…But what does that mean? Open. What do you think of when you hear that word? I think of ‘open doors’, ‘open minds’, ‘open hearts’, ‘open hands’, ‘wide open spaces’, ‘open up’. I think of hospitality, generosity, curiosity and possibility. I think of invitation, anticipation, dialogue, understanding, and respect. I suppose the word ‘Open’ might also prompt negative imagery—notions of a vacillating vagueness of ‘anything goes’ and ‘no holds barred’. But that’s not the openness I encounter in the Bible. From Genesis to Revelation, scripture is full of stories of men and women who lived open lives, open first and foremost to the love of God, the urging of the Holy Spirit, and the presence of the living Christ. Of course, the epitome of Openness is to be found in Jesus: the one who hung out with the folks who were most likely to find doors closed to themthe lepers, hemorrhaging women, madmen, tax collectors and Samaritans. Jesus: the one who painted pictures of a sumptuous feasts where those who live under the bridges and in the hedgerows are given the seat of honor. Jesus: the one who always opened up the possibility that the kingdom of God is about sweeping away all our prejudices and preconceptions, our narrow thinking and limited perspectives, to be replaced by the realization of a world in which people from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, come together in beloved community. If the same Jesus we read about in the gospels is still present and active among us nowby the power of the same Holy Spirit that moved the disciples out of their comfort zones to take the Good News into the worldthen even today we can expect to be invited into the amazing adventure of making new discoveries, expecting new surprises, encountering new challenges to old ways of thinking, of seeing new visions we could never have seen on our own. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to be open to having our minds changed… open to having our lives changed… open to new people who probably don’t look like us, or dress like us, or eat like us. Open to new experiences that will take us out of our comfort zones into places we haven’t been before. Open to new ideas, that may well shatter old paradigms and break open whole new worlds. It means that we are called to practice hospitality, open to inviting ‘outsiders’ in, and equally open to the adventure of taking us ‘insiders’ out – out into the world to engage itto engage all the possibility, potential and promise that comes when the stranger knocks on the door. Open. Bringing all of our heart, mind, soul and strength on this adventure called faith. That’s what we’re called to do at Northbrook. In Christ’s love, Marjorie

We are Open.

Of course, the epitome of Openness is to be found in Jesus: the one who hung out with the folks who were most likely to find doors closed to them—the lepers, hemorrhaging women, madmen, tax collectors and Samaritans.

If the same Jesus we read about in the gospels is still present and active among us now—by the power of the same Holy Spirit that moved the disciples out of their comfort zones to take the Good News into the world—then even today we can expect to be invited into the amazing adventure of making new discoveries, expecting new surprises, encountering new challenges to old ways of thinking, of seeing new visions we could never have seen on our own. It means that we are called to practice hospitality, open to inviting ‘outsiders’ in, and equally open to the adventure of taking us ‘insiders’ out – out into the world to engage it—to engage all the possibility, potential and promise that comes when the stranger knocks on the door.

Open. Bringing all of our heart, mind, soul and strength on this adventure called faith. That’s what we’re called to do at Northbrook.

Finance Committee So, do you remember the pretty heavy message in last month’s newsletter from Finance? If you don’t, please go back and read it. If you do, here is something light this month to balance out.

FAMILY RULES “Help each other. Always tell the truth. Share. Do your best. Pay with hugs and kisses. Listen to your parents. Laugh at yourself. Say I love you. Try new things. Be thankful. Show compassion. Be happy. Love each other. Dream big. Respect one another. Laugh out loud. Keep your promises. Say please and thank you. Be grateful. Think of others before yourself. Use kind words. Know you are loved. Hug often.” -- Louise Carey FINANCES We need your help! Although it is normal for income to lag expenses somewhat, especially during those summer months when so many people are traveling, this year we are considerably under budget. Our deficit through August is $58,631, mostly due to contributions lagging anticipated receipts. If you’re current with your pledge, we sincerely thak you. If your envelope is sitting on the corner of the desk waiting to be mailed, please send it in as soon as possible and help us get back in the black! Bill Travis for Finance

Special Presentation The Line & Speaker Ben Ogden,

Director of Fort Street Open Door and Salad Potluck

Sunday, October 6 after worship

Please join us on Sunday, October 6 after worship for a very special presentation and salad potluck. Ben Ogden, Director of Fort Street Open Door, will be our guest speaker. He will be showing the film The Line, an award winning documentary on families across the country living at or below the poverty line—hard working people with goals and families who deserve our attention. October 6th will be a special day at Northbrook when three of our Session committees, Mission, Adult Education and Congregational Life, collaborate on a salad potluck luncheon following our regular Sunday service. The highlight speaker will be Ben Ogden, the Director at Fort Street Open Door program, an amazing support system to which the Northbrook community has contributed for many years with donations of clothing, essential bedding, mission dollars and many volunteer hours. Ben will give us an update on the condition of those less-fortunate in the Detroit area. Our only request is that each family bring something to contribute to the making of a huge salad. Please bring your family and friends. All are welcome for this important presentation. A sign up sheet is in Fellowship Hall.

Brown Bag Luncheon and Book Discussion

Monday, October 28 11:30 a.m.

The next Brown Bag Luncheon and Book Discussion will be held on Monday, October 28 at 11:30 a.m. The discussion will be led by our

very own Nancy Gifford, a former member of our board. Nancy is requesting that we read the book, A Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife by Dr. Eben Alexander, MD. Our discussion will give us much to think on and to become more informed about. We will gather in the Library at 11:30 a.m. to listen, eat and discuss. Desserts and drinks will be provided.

Give a BIG welcome to Bob and Dorothy Warren who have been married for 60 years. They have three adult children, four grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Both retired, they are residents of Bingham Farms. Bob and Dorothy are longtime Presbyterians and have been actively engaged in congregations in Detroit, Livonia, Southfield, West Bloomfield and Farmington Hills. Bob is a retired sales executive, who loves travel and stamp collecting. Dorothy is a retired accountant and office manager and has also enjoyed being active in local politics. Dorothy enjoys sewing and knitting. Both Bob and Dorothy were drawn to Northbrook because of the people they already know who attend here and the

friendliness of the people they are getting to know. They also enjoy the mission programs of Northbrook and Sunday morning sermons.

Dear Northbrook,

This summer I had the amazing pleasure and honor

of working with a program called Mission Intern

through the Detroit United Methodist Conference.

For six weeks, along with two other interns, we ran a

day camp for around 30 kids from the area, who

couldn’t afford to pay for summer programs so we

offered them something fun and free to do.

At first, I was really nervous. I didn’t feel prepared to

take on something like this, but I knew that Christ

was with me and I had so many people supporting

me. From the beginning Northbrook was there for me. You provided me with so much love,

prayers and support—I can never explain how much that meant to me.

This experience is one of the best things I have ever done. I grew so much as a person and

learned so much more about the gifts that Christ has blessed me with. Sometimes I get really

stressed out and instead of turning to the One who can always comfort me, I would run away,

retreat into myself. This summer taught me that I can’t do that anymore, ever.

This experience was also one of the hardest things I have ever done. Sometimes the kids didn’t

listen, they would argue or be disrespectful, and it would get

really tough, but I had to keep going. One day in particular

was so difficult that when I managed to get 5 minutes alone

I laid on the floor and prayed the Lord would give me the

strength to keep going. I felt something come over me and I

was at peace. He told me that I could do this. I knew that not

only did He believe in me, but I had a whole community that

He had given me that believed in me too.

The hardest day of summer was the last day, leaving them all. Mission Intern really touched

my heart and made me realize that mission work with kids is something that I have a passion

for. I loved teaching the children about Christ. Some of them had NEVER heard a single

passage from the Bible! I loved seeing the wonder on their faces when I told them that there

was this God and from the moment they were thought into existence, He loved them and that

He would always love them. Those faces changed my life and renewed my entire faith.

Thank you Northbrook for being such a vital part of this experience for me. I couldn’t have

done it without your prayers or support; you were there to remind me that God is amazing

and that through God I have the potential to do amazing things.

Love always,

Janelle Moulding

Upcoming Presbytery of Detroit Hands-on Mission Opportunities Join the efforts for fellowship and to make a difference in the lives of others.

Saturday, October 5 Hands-On Mission Fair and Workshop 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. This great morning for mission enthusiasts begins with a continental breakfast at Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church in Ferndale. Join us for an opportunity to hear about successful mission projects within the Presbytery of Detroit; to learn about ways to raise funds for outbound mission trips; and to meet with some of our local mission partners: Cass Community Social Services, Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, Everyone Eats, Central Detroit Christian, World Medical Relief, Baldwin Center, and HOPE (Ypsilanti medical non-profit). Northbrook has been directly involved with several of these organizations. Last year we hosted this event in our Fellowship Hall, and those of us who attended left informed and inspired. Come to this year’s event to see why and to catch the spirit for mission!!

Wednesday, October 9 World Medical Relief Workday 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. We will be sorting medical supplies and equipment. Bring your own lunch and drink. 11745 Rosa Parks Blvd., Detroit (313-866-5333) Donations of medical supplies and equipment are welcome.

If you are interested in any of these mission opportunities, please go to the Presbytery of Detroit Hands-on Mission web site at www.hands-on-mission.org or contact Winnie Davies-Hancock at [email protected] or 248-593-8035. More information, including sign-up sheets and applicable forms, is posted on the mission bulletin board in Fellowship Hall and will appear in Sunday bulletins.

Consider ways in which you can Live the Love of Jesus Christ. Live our mission that is open, rational and compassionate!

THANK YOU to all of you who have donated produce to the community served by The Baldwin Center in Pontiac, as well as to Stephanie Wicker and Amy Annett who have helped make the deliveries! The veggies have been beautiful and we have collected over 60 pounds of garden produce. As weather permits, please keep them coming. — Winnie Davies-Hancock

Just some of the beautiful bounty we have shared with the community served by The

Fort Street Open Door—October 31, 2013

Following our visit on October 6th from Ben Ogden, the director of Fort St./Open Door program and his informed experiences working with Detroit's needy and often homeless, the Mission Connection is hopeful that many more of you will be inspired to join us for our next morning of service coming soon on Oct. 31st. This will be our final opportunity as a community as this will be the last 5th Thursday of 2013. But, in case you miss it, there's always time in 2014!

Your generosity toward this downtown community never fails to humble me. The beautiful clothing, shoes, coats, bedding, and reading/writing materials placed lovingly in the M. Campion bins located in our church's front hallway in short time find their way downtown to warm the hearts and bodies of our guests. Please keep up this important work. Join us on Thursday morning, Oct. 31st at 8:00 a.m. to ride together in the van. If there continues to be interest, we may stop for a mystery lunch in downtown "D". For more information, call Seglinda at 248-626-6514.

This favorite, fun, and festive mission event will be held on Sunday, December 8th following worship. For those of you who are new to our church family, this market is a wonderful opportunity to do your holiday shopping by purchasing meaningful gifts and/or making donations in honor of someone – gifts that will also help improve the lives of fellow world citizens who are in need. Proceeds from the sales of items purchased from represented organizations benefit local and worldwide enterprises, non-profits, and the people they serve. Prices are very reasonable with most under $50. This event allows shoppers to double the joy of gift-giving, for their purchases are a gift to loved ones and friends as well as a gift that brings joy and relief to others who share our world.

We will have many of our familiar and favorite organizations at this year’s market as well as some new surprises. Stay tuned for more information regarding the organizations we will be supporting through this event. If you would like to help with this event, have any suggestions for this year or any feedback on past markets, please contact Winnie Davies-Hancock at 248-593-8035, via e-mail at [email protected], or see her in church.

Souper Senior Supper Enthusiastic applause greeted the ten Mid and Senior High volunteers who helped serve the first Souper Supper of September.

The youth prepared fruit salad and dessert for the 16 regular attendees. Everyone enjoyed the event. Souper Senior Supper is held at 5:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month in the Library. Join us October 10 and 24.

Knit Wits Our Northbrook Knit Wits have enjoyed a busy summer but have continued our knitting projects to provide the care and comfort of prayer shawls. In addition, we have begun to concentrate on our fall time to prepare for the Alternative Gift Market. We have a small collection of hand crafted items to display in the lobby showcase, and we plan to offer a closer look during the coffee hour on October 20. For those who may be interested in purchasing specific items, you will be able to see them up close, ask questions and pre-order a specific color or size of an item. This will assure you that it will be finished and ready for you by the Christmas giving season. We are so grateful to those who have offered yarn to replenish our stock in the yarn cabinet as well as those who have made contributions. We are also grateful to our "at-large" knitters who have brought in projects although they cannot join us during our regularly scheduled meeting times. We are also grateful for the gift of this mission and we have all benefited from the wonderful fellowship of our group and the gratification we feel in the giving. Blessings all around us!

PWN Book Club

The PWN Book Club’s next meeting will be held on November 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Library. The discussion will be led by Seglinda Pritchard.

We will be reading The Reluctant Fundamentalist, by Mohsin Hamid. This book is an intelligent and absorbing 9/11 novel written from the perspective of Changez, a young Pakistani whose sympathies, despite his fervid immigrant embrace of America, lie with the attackers. The book unfolds as a monologue that Changez delivers to a mysterious American operative over dinner at a Lahore, Pakistan cafe.

Please join us!

Sunday, October 27 Join us right after church for a late breakfast/early lunch at Hogan’s. Come for fun, food and friendship. No advance reservations required.
