Getting Your Affairs in Order—Hospice Care Program

The final program of Northbrook’s popular series, Getting Your Affairs in Order, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7 in Fellowship Hall. The guest speaker will be Tom Avery. Mr. Avery is a Social Worker and Chaplain for St. Joseph Mercy Hospice in Troy and is currently located at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac. He says that over the last two and a half years, he has met with about 800 patients and their families and has experienced their struggles to put their affairs in order before it is too late. Mr. Avery has a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Wayne State University as well as degrees in pastoral and religious studies. However, his personal and professional experience extends well beyond his time with Hospice.

All are invited to attend free of charge. We encourage you to invite your family, friends and neighbors. Light refreshments will be served. For information, call the church at (248)642-0200.

Pastor’s Bible Study: Why in the World, The Reason God Became One of Us Christians believe a lot of crazy things—including that God showed up in a human body form and lived among humankind. Why would God want to become one of us and live in a world of anxiety, chaos and heartache? Why would God leave the comfort and recognition of heaven to live in this world? In this four week study, we will explore these perplexing questions.

Classes will be held on Wednesdays, November 18th, December 2nd, 9th and 16th. We will not have class on November 25 for those who may be preparing or traveling for Thanksgiving. Classes are offered at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the Library. The same material will be covered each week at both times, so come morning or evening, as fits your schedule. Please RSVP so we can be sure to have enough seating and materials for everyone. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….………………………………….. Sign me up for LIVING THE QUESTIONS!

Name: ______________________________________email: _______________________________________

I’ll mostly attend in the __________ morning , _________evening.

We have a new club at Northbrook. It is very exclusive. As you know, we celebrate 90th birthdays at church coffee hours. To continue honoring members, each member who is 90 or older becomes a member of our Roaring 90’s Club. Guess how many people are in the club? 21! God bless you and wishing you continued good health. Pictured below are some of our members.

Please Welcome our Newly Elected Officers. The following people have accepted the nomination of the Nominating Committee and were elected at the October 18th Congregational Meeting. They have agreed to faithfully serve you.

Elders Matt Broadwell—Allison and I were married in 1995 and have two children, Madison, who attends Wayne State, and Pierce who is a Groves High School Senior. I was born and raised in Birmingham and graduated from Seaholm. I grew up going to North Congregational Church in Southfield. The church later moved and is currently located in Farmington. I graduated from U of M Dearborn with a BA in History. I work for Pulte Group as Branch Manager for Pulte Mortgage.

I have served on the Worship Committee and am eager to continue to serve in anyway as needed. Northbrook has helped me realize my deep desire to be closer to God and that my spirituality should not be taken for granted but is something I need to continue to develop. I always look forward to Wednesdays and Sundays when I can surround myself with other members and visitors who help me learn from their experiences and backgrounds in my search for a closer relationship with God.

Tricia LaSota—My husband, Frank, and I have been members of Northbrook since 1986. We met while attending U of M. After marrying in 1985, we moved to Beverly Hills and began searching for a church home. We were fortunate to join the wonderful family of faith called Northbrook. I am thankful for the many ways Northbrook has helped my family grow in faith.

We have a dog named Juno and two adult daughters. Allison lives in Franklin, Tennessee, and Claire is a senior at MSU. I have been an elder and served on the Mission Connection Committee, the Personnel Committee and the most recent Pastoral Nominating Committee. Over the years, I have been blessed to serve the children of Northbrook as a teacher for Vacation Bible School, LOGOS and KIDS’ Connection and as a counselor at Church Camp. Currently, I continue to fill my passion for working with children through teaching at Northbrook Preschool. I am looking forward to serving as an elder again and am excited to see what God has planned for Northbrook as we grow stronger as a community of faith.

Dorothy Warren—I am a 3rd generation Detroiter. My three children are all in Michigan. Kim (Berkley) is a member at Greenfield Presbyterian Church. Rick lives in Royal Oak and David in St. Joseph. I have 4 grandchildren and two great-grandkids, a sister in Troy, a sister-in-law in Texas and many nieces and nephews.

I was baptized in the Methodist church in Fenton, Michigan. I graduated from Cooley High in Detroit, attended Albion and graduated from Wayne State. I did some substitute teaching, but my career was accounting, especially tax. Currently, I serve as a Bingham Farms trustee.

I was a teenager in the Presbyterian Church and have been a member for over 60 years. I began at Grace in Detroit, then to St. Paul’s in Livonia, on to Southfield, Church of Our Savior in West Bloomfield, First Pres. of Farmington and now Northbrook. I have been a deacon, elder, member of a PNC, a Sunday school teacher and a preschool chair. Northbrook has meant a great deal to me in the very short time I’ve been here. We felt welcome from the first time we walked through the door. There were a few familiar faces, but the new ones went out of their way also. You embody all the elements of what I believe to be necessary in a church; the way we worship, the choice of mission opportunities, the priorities in talent and treasure, the fellowship and support.

Northbrook Deacons Bill Travis—I have been a member of Northbrook since January 18, 1986. I have held many positions at

Northbrook including being a 3-term Elder, member Self Study in 2009/2010, member of the PNC in 2010, garage sale Chair/Co-Chair, greeter coordinator, SOS Transportation, funeral usher, member of the Sunday Morning Bible Class, member of Men’s Connection and Children’s Sunday school teacher. I bring both financial and organizational abilities to my work at Northbrook. I love my family, my church, my friends and my countries. My faith journey continues at Northbrook where my teachers are all the congregation. I retired in 2007. By

trade, I was an accountant in industry. I am pleased to be aboard the Good Ship Northbrook. Let’s set sail together.

Lee Anne Hemberg—Hello Northbrook! I am Lee Anne Hemberg, long time member of this congregation and very excited to serve as your deacon. I was raised and confirmed at Northbrook, married my U of M sweetheart, Don, here 36 years ago and our 4 children were baptized, confirmed and lovingly supported by this congregation. We also have three

beautiful daughters-in-law, 4 precious grandchildren as well as our dog Buster. I have served as a deacon and elder here in the past as well as participating in choir, LOGOS, garage sale and as camp nurse. As deacon, I will do my best to give back to Northbrook the care and kindness that it has always given me.

Nancy Best—I have been a member of Northbrook for 22 years. During my first few months, I began my service as a Sunday school teacher and then moved to a variety of roles including elder, clerk of session, LOGOS volunteer and deacon. I currently work as a school secretary for Birmingham Public Schools and enjoy reading and bicycle riding. My greatest joy is watching my adult children navigate their lives and careers. Diane Joppie—I was born in Cadillac, MI and baptized into the Christian Reformed Church as an infant along with my twin sister, Donna. I graduated from Northern Michigan Christian High School in McBain, MI & Mercy Central School of Nursing in Grand Rapids, Mi. Doug and I were married on March 7, 1970. We celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary this year! We have three children: Jen (Neil) Bright in Atlanta, GA; Chris (Samantha) Joppie in Ferndale, MI;

and Alex (Andrea) Joppie in Chicago, IL. We also have four of the most adorable grandchildren – Sara, Colin, Tristan and Grayson. I worked as a Registered Nurse at Mercy Hospital in Muskegon and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac for a total of 40 years. Last year, I decided to leave to pursue a full time avocation of care-giving to my parents and grandchildren along with enjoying life with my wonderful husband.

Doug and I have been active members of the Reformed Church of America. In the past, we were leaders of Senior High and Junior High Youth Groups. I also served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher and was a member of several small group bible studies. We started attending Northbrook about eight years ago after extensive searching when our previous church closed. We chose Northbrook not only because of the message preached but because of the active participation and action on that message. Every week, we find friendly people working hard to walk the walk and live the love of Jesus. Sunday mornings center my week and remind me of God’s love and steer me to make a difference in the world.

Nancy Schaefer—I have been a member of Northbrook for 50 years. Prior to that, our family were members of Evergreen Presbyterian Church in Detroit. I have served as Elder, Deacon and on several committees including Building & Grounds for many years. Singing in the choir was a joy!

Brighten the Holidays with Baldwin Baldwin Center in Pontiac, one of Northbrook mission dollar recipients, needs help providing new, unused gift items for those served by the organization. In addition to food baskets, Baldwin provides a “holiday store” where qualified clients can select gifts for their families. If you would like to go beyond your purchases for your Northbrook angel tree individual and help Baldwin also, you can bring items to church, to the Center or donate monetarily directly online at www.baldwincenter.org.

New items requested are: wrapping paper, tape, holiday cards, stocking stuffers, gift cards to Walmart or Meijer, clothing (undergarments, lounge wear, pants, tops, and outerwear in sizes XS to XXXL), age appropriate learning toys for 0 – 5 and 6 – 12. For teens, movie passes, crafts, games and sports equipment are desired. Items for women can include purses, hair dryers, kitchen items, scarves, etc.; and for men, suggested items include tools, personal grooming products, flashlight lanterns, wallets and shavers.

You may have something new that you have wanted to re-gift that Baldwin could use in their holiday store. All items are needed by November 29. Watch for a box in Fellowship Hall to place your items. If you have questions, call Donna Young at (248)932-3874.

2015 Angel Tree Christmas Present Drive

Sunday, November 22 through Friday, December 11

Sharing the love of Jesus Christ this Christmas with the families, residents and clients of:

Oakland Family Services - a private human services agency, serving families who are facing financial difficulty. While most families in our community look forward to the holidays with joy and anticipation, there are some who are struggling to meet the financial demands of day-to-day life and do not have the means to provide gifts for their children on Christmas day. For them, the holidays bring a sense of dread and disappointment. We have the opportunity to make the holidays brighter for a few of these families. Oakland Family Services has provided us with five families who need our help. Our Angel Tree will be decorated with angel tags that describe specific clothing needs, gift wishes, household needs and food items for the members of these families.

A Place of Refuge - a home providing safe transitional housing to homeless youth who have or will soon age out of foster care. For youth who are transitioning out of foster care, the holidays can be a lonely and difficult time. Through our angel tree gifts, we can show our love and support to the two young men who are currently living at A Place of Refuge. Our Angel Tree will include tags representing their personal needs and gift wishes as well as items that are needed for the house.

Open Door Ministry - a mission supplying meals and clothing to the homeless and those in great need. Our Angel Tree will include tags detailing general clothing donations that are needed to help keep the clients of Open Door warm this winter.

To adopt an angel, simply detach the bottom portion of the angel tag from the tree and record your name on the sign-out sheet. Wrapped gifts and donations should be placed under the tree by Friday, December 11.

The Mission Connection Empty Bowls Collection from now through December will benefit Freedom House in Detroit. If you would like to learn more about this organization supported by our mission funds, check out the website: http://www.freedomhousedetroit.org/. Please contribute your loose change in the bowl on the nametag table in the main hallway.

Mission Updates Thank you to everyone who donated fresh produce and/or raised a tomato plant as part of The Great Tomato Giveaway initiative. Fifty churches within the Presbytery participated in this year's collection. Northbrook contributed many pounds of fruits and vegetables to The Baldwin Center in Pontiac through the duration of the program over the summer and through October.

Believe it or not, FEMA-declared disaster flood relief from the September 2014 flooding in the Greater Metro Detroit area is still needed. If you are interested in working as part of a team with The Northwest Detroit Flood Recovery Project, please contact Winnie Davies-Hancock at (248)593-8035 or [email protected] or see information on the Mission Bulletin Board in Fellowship Hall. Different types of work still need to be done.

Thank you to everyone who donated to the Diaper Drive for Baby Basics of

Troy!!

Surprise, Surprise! On September 20th, the congregation, along with family and friends, joined in surprising Pastor Marjorie Wilhelmi in celebration of the 10th anniversary of her ordination. The celebration included the presentation of this painting by one of her favorite artists, He Qi, depicting the baptism of Jesus. Thank You . . . It is difficult to find the words to say thank you for the wonderful celebration of the tenth anniversary of my ordination last Sunday. I can say I have never been more surprised in my life! I feel so blessed, so honored and so humbled by your care and encouragement to me, and so very privileged to be your pastor. Thank you very much for the wonderful painting by He Qi. It now hangs in the entrance to my home, always reminding me, coming and going, of my baptism in Christ and my call to serve you in His name. The prayer of recommitment during worship was a blessed opportunity to recommit myself to this ministry with you. I look forward to all that our journey together will hold! May the blessings of abundant joy and gratitude continue to pour upon us, and through us, to touch others as we strive together to live the love of Jesus Christ!

In Christ’s love, Marjorie

Northbrook Book Club On November 2, we will discuss Station Eleven at 7 p.m. in the Library. Station Eleven is a 2014 science fiction novel by Emily St. John Mandel which takes place in the Great Lakes region after a fictional disease, the "Georgia Flu," has devastated the world, killing most of the population. The novel follows a group of actors and musicians who perform Shakespeare and classical music throughout the Great Lakes region as they perform, alternating between the world before and after the virus has spread. Station Eleven is set in a world turned upside down but is ultimately an exploration of people surviving and remaking their lives by preserving the qualities that make us human: culture, art and the humanities.

Station Eleven is the 2015-16 Great Michigan Read novel selected by the Michigan Humanities Council. A statewide panel of teachers, librarians, community leaders and book lovers select the Great Michigan Read every two years. This is Mandel's fourth novel and was well received by critics with praise emphasizing the understated nature of Mandel's writing. It appeared on several end of year lists as one of the best novels of 2014 and won the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2015.

On Monday, December 14, we will meet at 7:00 pm in the Library to discuss Christmas UnWrapped: Lighthearted Humor to Get You through the Holiday by Scott Emmons. Rhyme master Scott Emmons approaches Christmas with a joke and a grin by offering 47 original poems. If the holidays conjure up images of maxed-out credit card bills, mile-long mall lines, or

that lamp from Aunt Jane that graces your abode only when she comes to visit, this colorful, 96 page keepsake provides rhyming redemption.

All are welcome to join the Northbrook Book Club discussions.

Yule Souper Supper December 10 at 5:30 p.m.

Senior Souper Supper will have a Christmas theme on December 10. Join us for a festive special supper and program at 5:30 p.m. in the Library. As this is always a popular event, please make a reservation with Becky in the Church office.

Senior Souper Supper

Drive away those November chills with a yummy dinner at Senior Souper Supper. Join us for delicious soup and sparkling conversation at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, November 12, in the library. Remember, there will be no soup supper on the fourth Thursday in November -- Thanksgiving Day.

Happy Turkey Day!

Dear Northbrook Family, Thank you for your warm welcome back to church on September 20th! I was so proud to be there to enjoy the party for our Marjorie and the lovely luncheon. I appreciated all the beautiful cards that I received when I was in

Beaumont and in the Nursing Center on Woodward. I also loved the personal visits there and seeing Marjorie’s lovely face at the nursing center visiting and praying with me! I felt all your prayers and thank you for them. I’m on my way back to better health now. It makes me so happy! Again, you all mean the world to me and I’m privileged to know you all and to be part of Northbrook! Love you all!

Northbrook Rose By the time you receive the next Newsletter, we will have celebrated four holidays, three religious and the beginning of a New Year. If you ask folks, they will say Christmas is their favorite celebration day. This day is a favorite of disciples, sages, authors and poets. They have penned volumes about the Christ Child who came to us. Let us open our minds to rekindle His birth.

Use our eyes to see good things while trying to remedy that which is not. Open our ears to the message of Him through music and verse. Let us use our noses to relish Christmas feasts, evergreens and hearth side fires. Choose words from our mouths to comfort, encourage and pray together. Let us clasp hands in friendship while doing good works. Walk with the intent to do what is right for you and others.

Finally....In our hearts, Christmas can be every day. Celebrate God's love for us every day. You can then say,"Yes, I truly believe." What is even better...He loves us in return.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Blessings from my house to your house, Rose
