July 18 Eid-al-Fitr - Many Muslims in Canada celebrate Eid al-Fitr (also known as Id al-Fitr or Eid ul-Fitr) on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic calendar. It marks the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan and the start of a feast that lasts up to three days in some countries. People dress in their finest clothes and adorn their homes with lights and other decorations. Eid al-Fitr is a joyous occasion but its underlying purpose is to praise God and give thanks to him, according to Islamic belief.

Active For Life

Raising healthy happy kids Activity for Babies and Toddlers

http://activeforlife.com/raising-happy-healthy-successful-kid/

TODDLER CLIMBING 1-3 years

Time 10-15 minutes Skill: Agility, balance, coordination

Requirements; staircase, sofas, large chairs, bed, cushions, and pillows

Outdoors: simple climbing obstacles such as benches and garden walls, or

play frames at a playground

Directions 1. Encourage your toddler to climb obstacles that are free of sharp edges.

Stay close and be ready to catch your child if she loses her balance, her footing, or her hand grip. 2. If you are indoors, encourage your child to climb the stairs or climb onto beds and sofas. You can also create a climbing/crawling obstacle course using sofa cushions and pillows. 3. If you are outdoors, encourage your child to climb objects you encounter such as park benches, garden retaining walls, logs and even smalls rock outcroppings. Low playground equipment and climbing frames designed for toddlers are excellent if available. 4. Always stay close to your toddler, especially between ages 1-2 years, and be prepared to catch her if she loses her balance, her footing, or her hand grip! Don’t allow her to climb too high, or into any areas beyond your arm reach. 5. Use encouraging words, and avoid comments that communicate fear. Simply lift her down from any place where you feel she is exposed to excessive risk of falling and possibility of injury. Variation

If you sense that your toddler needs encouragement to climb, try placing one of her favourite toys on top of an obstacle in full view, or make a motion to climb the obstacle yourself and encourage her to climb with you. Benefits

This activity develops balance and physical coordination, along with some agility, and it builds strength in the limbs.

No Excuses – Get Outside

Participation in outdoor recreation is good for us mentally and physically. Whatever the weather, just being outside in the fresh air can be really energizing and mentally refreshing. If you're out under blues skies and a warm sun, all the better! As we enjoy the beautiful Edmonton weather, we see the wide range of benefits outdoor play offers: •Gives kids a chance to burn off energy •Can be calming and allow kids to "recharge" their energy levels •Helps kids learn to interact with and understand the natural world •Offers a chance for more social interaction with peers •Helps to develop their powers of observation and their assessment of risk •Offers more opportunities for creativity and free play •Helps to build a strong link between physical health and outdoor play Retrieved from http://www.healthyalberta.com/1424.htm (June 18, 2015)

Providers often say children sleep better, they are happier and they see less behavior problems when children are outside. We can be outside year round with appropriate modifications and adjustments. Many inside toys can be taken outside; play kitchen, blocks, puzzles, paints, musical instruments etc.

As you see, some things change with the seasons and some don’t.

The most important fact that stays the same, children want and need to be outside year round.
