North Wirral Coast The North Wirral section of the Circular Trail takesyou from Seacombe Ferry Terminal to West Kirby, viathe rejuvenated New Brighton Resort with its FloralPavilion, Fort Perch Rock, Lighthouse, Marine Lakeand new Retail Park. The route continues along thepromenade to Wallasey Beach and into North WirralCoastal Park.

The route then turns inland at The Gunsite, the locationof World War II gun emplacements, to follow the BirketCycle Route. Pedestrians can if they wish carry on alongthe embankment past Leasowe Common where in 1864the oldest skeleton in Merseyside was found.

Moreton Beach is where the world’s first passengerhovercraft service operated to Rhyl in North Wales.The route joins North Shore near Leasowe Lighthouse,which is the oldest brick built lighthouse in the country.Together horse riders, walkers and cyclists can continuepast the prehistoric sunken forest and onto Meols,famous for the number of archaeological metal findsthat have been made there totalling over 5,000and most of which date from 500BC to 1500AD.

At King’s Gap, cyclists head inland, whilst pedestrianscan continue along the foreshore or via Stanley Road toRed Rocks and onto West Kirby.

Wallasey Town Hall

Wallasey Town Hall was builtto replace the old Town Hall andits foundation stone was laid intoposition by means of electricity,by King George V in 1914, while9,000 school children sang in thechoir. Its nickname 'back-to-

front' town hall arose as it was built to face the river andhas a fine flight of steps leading up from the promenade.

Seacombe Ferry Terminaland Spaceport

This is one of two sites inWirral from which you can takea trip on the Mersey Ferry toLiverpool. Also based here is the £10 million, space-themedattraction, Spaceport which

takes you on an inspirational journey through spacethrough the several themed galleries, all of which feature a large variety of interactive hands-on exhibits and audiovisual experiences.

Guinea Gap Baths

Guinea Gap Baths in Seacombeis the oldest pool in Wirral.Between 1908 and 1957 no fewerthan 205 world and nationalswimming records were achievedhere. Its name is derived fromthe days before the promenade

was built where there was a break in the riverbank knownto locals as Guinea Gap. This was a popular place foranyone wishing to go for a swim as it was free fromdangerous currents that lurk in the river itself.

The Magazines areaand Vale Park

The area was established in the1750s when the Port of Liverpoolset up the major gunpowder andweaponry storage magazines inthe local sand dunes. Opened in1889, Vale Park became a public

park in 1899 and was one of the best small parks in the north.With its excellent acoustics and striking appearance thebandstand is the main feature of the park.

New Brighton Seafront

Fort Perch Rock

Fort Perch Rock was completedin 1829 as a permanentfortification to protect the Portof Liverpool in times of war.Inside today lies a cornucopia ofexhibits ranging from WorldWar II aviation to naval history

displays of the doomed submarine HMS Thetis, theLusitania and the Titanic. Even Beatles and Elvis Presleymemorabilia is on show inside this unusual fortress at themouth of the Mersey Estuary.

New Brightonpast and present

New Brighton has been a seasideresort for nearly 200 years. It wascreated and named by Liverpoolmerchant, James Atherton in1830 as a seaside retreat for thegentry. In the latter half of the

19th century it developed into a popular seaside resort forthe surrounding industrial towns. It suffered a decline in thelatter part of the last century but has been the recipient ofhuge investment through ‘Brand New Brighton’.

The Floral Pavilion

In its hey-day New Brighton was the accepted rendezvousfor theatre goers and with seven theatres, was rich in liveentertainment. With the declineof the resort, the Floral Pavilionwas the last to survive. ‘Brand

New Brighton’ partly funded by The European RegionalDevelopment Fund was used to create the award-winningnew Floral Pavilion that exists today.

Tower Grounds

This is where the Tower Ballroomand New Brighton Tower itselfused to be. The tower wascompleted in 1900, 10 years afterBlackpool Tower and, at 567ft(173m), was 49ft (15m) taller. Itwas modelled on the Eiffel Tower,attracted over 500,000 visitors ayear in it's hey-day and featured

one of the largest ballrooms in the world. Sadly, due to thewar, the Tower became neglected and was finally dismantledin 1921.

Follow the coastal promenade past the shops and otherattractions of New Brighton and eventually past the newNeptune Development to the Pierrot roundabout and the new Swan Lake. From the roundabout, continue along thepromenade keeping the King’s Parade on your left and the sea on your right to the Lifeguard Station where the cycletrack becomes the coastal path.

From the Lifeguard Station where the coastalpath becomes the cycle track, continue along the seafrontpromenade keeping King’s Parade on your right and thesea on your left all the way to New Brighton.

Arrive in New Brighton, passing the new NeptuneDevelopment, with the mouth of the River Mersey andFort Perch Rock ahead on the left. Follow the coastalpromenade, past the shops and other attractions of NewBrighton on your right. Eventually the promenade turnsright from the seafront to the Mersey Estuary promenadeand past the Floral Pavilion. The Tower Grounds will now appear on your right.

North Wirral Coastal Park

The North Wirral Coastal Parkwas established in 1986 andstretches from Derby Pool at theWallasey end to Dove Point atMeols, a distance of about 3.5miles. The entire length of thepark is bordered on its seaward

side by a manmade embankment. An embankment of somedescription has been present on the North Wirral foreshorefor 250 years. The Coastal Rangers undertake regular projects within the dunes to encourage stabilisation throughvegetation management. Sand is imported into the dunes as they are cut off from their natural supply by the seadefence embankment. They once formed a natural defenceagainst the sea and gave shelter from strong sea winds. The Park is a collection of open spaces behind the seaembankment that include the Gunsite picnic area andLeasowe Common, with numerous open grassed areas inbetween Leasowe Lighthouse can been seen from pointswithin the park. The lighthouse is at the western end ofLeasowe Common near to the hay meadow and the startof the River Birket cycle track.

The Gunsite and Leasowe Dunes

The Gunsite was formerly ananti-aircraft station during theSecond World War, establishedto protect the docks andsurrounding areas from air raid.It is now a picnic area and

wildlife haven for numerous butterflies and bees. The sand dunes are situated between Leasowe Bay andthe Gunsite. They once formed a natural defence againstthe sea and gave shelter from strong winds. They are aunique and threatened habitat nationally, containing avariety of species including Sand Lizard, Burnet Moth,Marram and Lyme grasses. Look out for Kestrel andSkylark flying above your head.

Derby Pool

The Derby Pool was formerly an open air swimming pool.Some of the structure stillremains as shelters. Here youcan get stunning views overLiverpool Bay with glorioussunsets in the evening. There

is now a pub/restaurant on-site with a mini golf courseand clean beaches nearby.

From the Lifeguard Station the cycle track becomesthe coastal path. Continue along to the Derby Pool car park.Follow the trail along the north shore, cyclists on cyclepathand walkers alongside.

At this point the route turns inland. (Walkers have anoption to walk along the concrete track of the sea defence wall because of the current by-law prohibiting cycling.) Leasowe Lighthouse can be seen in the distance ahead.

From the north shore, continue along the track. Careneeds to be taken because this is a shared use bridleway withmotor vehicles accessing the car parks. Follow the track leftinto Green Lane and after 200yds turn right into TelegraphLane. National Cycle Network Route 56 continues straight oninto central Wirral.

At the main Leasowe Rd, the route continues acrossthe road to the right of the garage. Take care crossing thisbusy dual carriageway. You may wish to cross this road at thepelican crossing about 200yds left or at the roundabout 100ydsto the right. Enter the playing fields area leaving the garageand houses on your left, continue across the playing fields.Before the houses, turn left across the field with the houses on the right until you get to the raised embankment.

Turn right onto the raised embankment with theriver on the left and the houses on your right. Follow thisgrass path past the access path to the Golf Club on the left.The path turns right to run alongside the main River Birketon your left. Continue to the metal bridge where you turn leftand then immediately right.

Clockwise:River Birket - North Wirral Coastal Park

From the metal bridge, follow the grass path aroundto the left, keeping the river on your right. Past the path tothe Golf Club on your right, and continue along until theembankment reaches the end of the line of houses.

Turn left to go across the playing field to the surfacedpath. Turn right onto this path which leads out to Leasowe Rd.

The route now follows Telegraph Lane that isdiagonally right across the road. Take care crossing the busydual carriageway. Consider using the pelican crossing orroundabout nearby. Follow this bridleway to the end, whereyou turn left, the NCN Route 56 joins the trail from centralWirral from your right. After 200yds turn right with theGunsite car park now on your left.

Take care along this track because it is a shared useroute with motor vehicles accessing the North Wirral CoastalPark car parks. Continue along the track until you reach thesea defence wall.

Turn right and follow the trail along the north shore,cyclists on cyclepath and walkers alongside. When you get tothe Derby Pool car park, continue along in front of the carpark on the coastal path past the Lifeguard Station and alongthe seafront promenade to New Brighton.

Leasowe Lighthouse -River Birket

River Birket

Most small rivers on NorthWirral flow into The Birket,the river from which Birkenheadtakes its name. The Birketflows from near West Kirby toBirkenhead docks, much of thesurrounding is reclaimed marsh.

This area provides a rich habitat corridor for animals andbirds. Look out for herons and ducks along the trail.

Leasowe Lighthouse

Built in 1763 by the MerseyDocks and Harbour Board,Leasowe Lighthouse is the oldestbrick built lighthouse in Britainand possibly the first building ofits kind in the world to use cavitywalls for insulation. It stands

101ft (27m) tall on Leasowe Common. It was one of fourlights on the North Wirral Foreshore used to guide ships intothe entrance to the Rock Channel and the Port of Liverpool. Now a site of public interest, and a Grade II Listedmonument, the Lighthouse features guided tours and specialevents with displays about Leasowe Lighthouse, the NorthWirral Coastal Park and the Wirral Coastline.

Leasowe Bay

Leasowe Bay is a secluded areawhich is becoming popularwith surfers and windsurfers. A boardwalk path through thedunes gives access to a haymeadow and the Gunsite picnicarea, a former anti-aircraft base.

Leasowe Castle

Leasowe Castle was built byFerdinando Stanley, 5th Earl of Derby around 1593, possiblyas an observation platform forthe Wallasey Races which tookplace on the sands opposite atLeasowe in the 16th and 17th

centuries and which are regarded as a forerunner of theDerby races. At first the Castle consisted only of anoctagonal tower. This had become disused by 1700, and it became known as ‘Mockbeggar Hall’. The term‘Mockbeggar Wharf ’ is still used for the adjoiningforeshore. Leasowe Castle is now a hotel.

At the metal bridge near to Davis Rd, turn leftover the bridge and then immediate right. Follow the pathalong until you come to Reeds Lane, where you turn rightand then immediate left onto the riverside path keeping the River Birket now on your left. Continue along this path until you come to Pasture Rd, where you turn left,and then right.

Having crossed the road and onto the track again,with the river on your left, continue across the fields andturn left to go past the lighthouse which is on your left.After the lighthouse car parks on your right, the route then turns right onto the public bridleway as the road goes left. Follow this bridleway along until it rejoins the sea defence wall.

From the sea defence wall the route veers righttowards the lighthouse. Eventually, you come to anothertrack where you turn left, then go past the car parks onthe left and Leasowe Lighthouse is on your right. About200yds after the lighthouse turn right onto the track thatgoes across the field to run alongside the River Birket.

At the junction with Pasture Rd, cross over theroad, turn left and then immediately right onto thecontinuation of the River Birket cycle track keeping theriver on your right. Go as far as Reeds Lane, where youturn right and then immediately, left onto the River Birketcycle track, keeping the river this time on your left. Keepgoing until you get to the metal bridge where you turn leftand then immediately right passing Davis Rd on the left.Follow this grassed track keeping the river on your rightand the houses on your left.

Meols Promenade

Hoyle Lake

Pictured here is the new modelboating lake next to the NewLifeboat Station. For thousands of years, people had made use of a natural harbour called the Hoyle Lake. This gave its name in modern times to Hoylake.

In the 17th century Hoyle Lake was a deep-water anchoragefor vessels on passage to Chester and the River Dee ports. By the 1830s, with the silting of the Lake and the River Dee,the ships docked at Liverpool. By the end of the 19th century,the Lake had disappeared altogether to form the East Hoylesandbank that can be seen in the distance today.

Meols Promenade

Meols has a promenade andbeach which stretches on toHoylake and Moreton. Meols issteeped in Viking history andthere is said to be a Viking Shipburied under the Railway Inncar park. It is an excellent spot

to observe waders at low tide. A channel runs close to theshore here and this attracts the usual Oystercatchers andRedshank along with a good variety of other species,including Bar-tailed Godwit and Grey Plover.

The new Hoylake Lifeboat Station

The Royal National LifeboatInstitution is the charity thatsaves lives at sea. Its volunteersprovide a 24-hour search andrescue service around the UK and Ireland coasts. The RNLI

operates over 230 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland.Three lifeboat stations are on or near the Wirral CircularTrail. Today the Mersey class lifeboat ‘Lady of Hilbre’ andcarriage are towed by a caterpillar tracked Talus tractor whichhas been specifically designed to launch carriage lifeboats.

The old Hoylake Lifeboat Station

Hoylake Lifeboat station is one of the oldest on the coasts ofGreat Britain and Ireland. Itwas founded by the MerseyDocks & Harbour Board in1803 and taken over by the

RNLI in 1894. For a time there was also a Lifeboat Stationon Hilbre Island. This Station was closed in the 1930s. Hoylake has always had a ‘carriage launched’ lifeboat. In earlier times, the boat was pulled to the water by a team of horses. Frames for storing the harnesses can still be seenon the wall of the old boathouse which was built in1899.

From point 12 the route returns to the northshore along to the Coastguard Station at Dove Point.

From Dove Point the route then goes around theend of the sea defence wall and joins Meols Promenade.Follow this all the way along, keeping the sea on the right,to the new Lifeboat Station and model boating lake.

Continue along the promenade to King’s Gap.Please note that from this point the road is one-way in theopposite direction and according to the by-law, cyclists must notexceed 10mph! (On the promenade, not the road)

From King’s Gap continue along the promenadeto the new Lifeboat Station on the left.

Continue on the route along the promenadewhich becomes Meols Parade and follow that until you getto the slipway at Bennet’s Lane and Dove Point. At thislocation the route turns right and then immediate leftbehind the sea wall. Walkers have the alternative option ofremaining on the concrete track on the sea defence wallbecause of the current by-law prohibiting cycling.

From Dove Point Coastguard Station continueonto the new path on the sea defence embankment. Theroute veers to the right away from the sea defence walltowards Leasowe Lighthouse.

Hoylake - West Kirby (Cubbins Green)

King’s Gap

The King’s Gap was so calledbecause in 1690, Prince Williamof Orange joined his ships at theHoyle Lake and set sail forIreland with his fleet from theseshores for his meeting with KingJames. His 10,000 strong army

was victorious in the Battle of the Boyne.

Hilbre Islands/Red Rocks

The three islands, isolated from the mainland by the tides, bring asense of isolation and castaway feel,until the ebb tide exposes the beachagain for the walk back to WestKirby and the everyday world. Red Rocks, designated as a Site of

Special Scientific Interest, is an area of sand dunes and reedbedsand home to a variety plants the rarest of which is Mackay'sHorsetail, which is not found in any other location in England.The area is important for recording migrant birds, and is abreeding site for Natterjack Toads, a breed common inmainland Europe, but rare in the UK.

The Marine Lake

One of the largest man-madelakes in the UK, it is 52 acresin size, 5ft deep and totallyenclosed.

The Lake is home to theWirral Sailing School, whichoffers courses in sailing,

windsurfing and canoeing, making it the ideal place toindulge your adventurous side. The less energetic can alsoenjoy the Marine Lake by taking a leisurely stroll aroundthe lake edge path. At low tide there is a large stretch ofbeach from West Kirby to Red Rocks.

The Royal LiverpoolGolf Club

Founded in 1869, Hoylake, as itis called by those in the know,has a long and illustrious historyof playing host to the BritishOpen and has now hosted eleven,its first in 1897. The Open is set

to return to The Royal Liverpool Golf Club in 2014.

Anti-clockwise:Hoylake - West Kirby (Cubbins Green)

From the promenade at King’s Gap turn left. There isthe alternative option for walkers to remain on the beachand follow the coastline around to West Kirby. This shouldbe possible at anytime other than at very high tides.Unless you take the beach route, continue into King’s Gapand go along to the junction of Stanley Rd. At this point,walkers and cyclists have separate routes.

Walkers: Having turned right into Stanley Rd from King’sGap continue along to the end keeping the Royal LiverpoolGolf Club on the left. At the end of Stanley Rd turn leftonto the beach and follow the beach path. Keep the sanddunes on your left all the way to West Kirby promenade. At the end of Dee Lane, in front of Morrisons car park, theinformation board at this location gives details of suitabletimes to walk to Hilbre Island. There is the Sailing Cluband Marine Lake to the right, and at this location walkershave 3 options.

Option 1: Turn left into Dee Lane passing Morrisons on the right. At the end of Dee Lane turn right into GrangeRd, keeping West Kirby railway station and the Concourseon the left. The start of the Wirral Way is on the right.

Option 2: Continue along the promenade with the MarineLake on the right all the way to the end. When you get tothe West Kirby Sailing Club turn left then right, intoMacdona Drive. Follow this along to Cubbins Green. The route continues across the grassed area and you areable to join the Wirral Way at two locations on your left.

Option 3: Turn right at the end of Dee Lane and walkaround the Marine Lake path where it joins the WestKirby Sailing Club, the instructions are as Option 2.

Opposite the Cubbins Green access to the Wirral Way isMelloncroft Drive that leads straight up to the publicfootpaths of Caldy Hill.

Cyclists: Continue straight on from King’s Gap over theroundabout and straight over the level crossing next toHoylake station. Take the turn immediately right onto thecycle track that runs adjacent to the railway. At the end of thiscycle track turn left into Greenbank Rd, then immediatelyright into Jubilee Drive and then fork right into BrightonAvenue. Follow the paths between the houses until they exitonto the open grassed area and then turn right and left intoOrrysdale Rd. Follow this road past the petrol station on theleft and West Kirby Concourse on the right. The start of theWirral Way is opposite the end of Orrysdale Rd. Continuealong the Wirral Way to Cubbins Green.

Clockwise:West Kirby (Cubbins Green) - Hoylake

As walkers and cyclists approach West Kirby fromThurstaston, walkers are presented with 2 options.

Option 1: When on the Wirral Way, you can turn leftonto Cubbins Green at two locations. Follow this grassedarea along the cliff top to the road. This is Macdona Drive,which you should follow to the end, and turn left up to thestart of the West Kirby promenade with the Sailing Clubon the left.

From this point you can choose whether to walk aroundthe Marine Lake, or turn right and follow the promenadealong, keeping the Marine Lake on your left.

The Marine Lake path and the promenade meet up at thejunction with Dee Lane in front of Morrisons car park.

Option 2:Walkers can remain on the Wirral Way to itsend where you will need to turn left into Grange Rdleaving West Kirby Concourse and the railway station onyour right. Pass both these locations and turn left intoDee Lane. Follow this road keeping Morrisons to yourleft until you get to the seafront.

With Morrisons behind you, turn right onto the beach,leaving the Marine Lake behind you. The informationboard at this location gives suitable times to walk out to Hilbre Island.

Follow the beach path, passing the sand dunes on yourright, until you get to the rocky area locally known as RedRocks. At the end of Stanley Rd where you can turn right,follow Stanley Rd to the end keeping the Royal LiverpoolGolf Club on your right. At the end of Stanley Rd turn leftinto King’s Gap to the seafront promenade. It is possible to remain on the beach and go around fromRed Rocks to Hoylake Promenade at times other thanwhen there is a very high tide.

Cyclists: From Cubbins Green, continue to the end ofthe Wirral Way and go straight over into Orrysdale Rdkeeping West Kirby Concourse on your left and thepetrol station on your right. At the end of Orrysdale Rd,turn right and immediate left onto the track behind thehouses and follow this through to Jubilee Drive, and thenleft into Greenbank Rd. Turn immediately right on thebend onto the cycle track which takes you all the way toHoylake railway station, where you turn left over the levelcrossing. Continue over the roundabout into King’s Gapand straight down to the seafront promenade.
