Specific requirements established by each individual teacher for every course will be distributed to students, discussed with each class, and posted in classrooms.

GradesGrades will be calculated with the following percentages: A = 92-100% B = 83-91% C = 70-82% D = 60-69% E = 0-59%

(102% is the maximum that can be earned)

* -- Indicates that the student has not completed all course requirements. Course work must be completed within 45 days or the student will receive an “F” for any work not completed.

I -- Indicates Incomplete

WD -- Indicates the student withdrew from the course within the required time limit. No penalty accompanies this grade.

WF-- Indicates course withdrawal after the established limit. The student receives a failure grade in the course. This does affect the GPA of the student.

NC -- Credit denied due to lack of attendance.

Honor RollAll A’s and/or B’s (no C’s, D’s or E’s) or a combination of both in all subjects.

Class Rank and GPA The Board acknowledges the necessity for a system of computing grade point averages and class rank for secondary school students to inform students, parents and others of their relative academic placement among their peers.

The Board authorizes a system of class rank, by, grade point average (GPA) for students in grades 9-12. All students in a grade/class shall be ranked.

Class rank shall be computed by the grade point average (GPA) in all subjects for which credit is awarded.

GPA will be calculated every semester. An A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0. For all Honor Courses, Advanced Placement Courses and Dual Enrollment Courses receive an additional weight by adding (1/2) quality point to the grade achieved by the student, providing that the student earns a final grade of at least a “C” (e.g. A=4.5, B=3.5, C=2.5).

Any two (2) or more students whose computed grade point averages are identical shall be given the same rank. The rank of the student who immediately follows a tied position will be determined by the number of students preceding and not by the rank of the proceeding person.

A student's grade point average and rank in class shall be entered on the student's record and transcripts and shall be subject to Board policy on release of student records.

Valedictorian and Salutatorian will be determined at the end of the fourth nine weeks in grade 12.

North Star High School Graduation PlanStudents will be required to meet the following three criteria for graduation from the North Star School District:

1. Completion of 24 credits A. 4 – English B. 4 – Social Studies C. 3 – Science D. 3 – Mathematics E. 1 – Health/Physical Education F. 1 – Arts & Humanities (Foreign Language) G. .75 – Computer H. .25 – Driver Education I. 7 – Electives

(SCTC Students - * 0.25 Credits of Computer, * 0.50 credits of Health/Physical Education, * 9.00 Credits of Elective)

a. Satisfactory completion of the North Star High School Graduation Project. * Will not be a requirement for the class of 2017 and beyond.

b. Students must score advanced or proficient in required areas of the applicable Keystone Exams.

Any student exempted from the Keystone Exam shall be required to show proficiency by taking an end-of-course final exam, locally produced and comparable in rigor to the Keystone Exam. Students taking the end-of-course local exam must demonstrate proficiency by scoring 90% correct on each final exam. Students may retake the exam following a designated period of supplemental instruction.

2. Students not meeting the criteria for graduation will be evaluated for graduation candidacy as follows:

2

Page 3: NORTH STAR SCHOOL DISTRICThsnscougars.ss7.sharpschool.com/UserFiles/Servers/Serv…  · Web viewYou must submit a short (150-300 word) essay confirming what ways you have shown character,

a. Students not successfully completing twenty-four (24) credits as listed in Board policy will be required to take summer school courses (at their own expense) to complete requirements or repeat course work the following school year.

b. Students not scoring at the advanced or proficient level will be required to attend remediation classes for supplemental instruction and retake the state assessment when next available.

3. Students must score proficient or advanced on the Keystone Exams, the Keystone Exam retest, the local final exam (Keystone-Exempt students only), or the Project-Based Assessments in order to graduate. The graduating class of 2017 is the first graduating class that must demonstrate proficiency in Algebra I, Biology, and Literature in order to meet state graduation requirements.

Make-up WorkThe following guidelines have been established for make-up work in the high school.

1. If a student is absent from class for one (1) day, he/she, upon return to school, is required to submit all work due that was assigned prior to the day of absence and take test(s) assigned prior to the day of absence provided no new material on the test was taught that day.

2. If a student is absent from class for more than one day, the student has make-up days equivalent to the number of days absent from the day he/she returns to school to make up all work (tests, quizzes, assignments, etc.). It is the responsibility of the student to meet with the teacher before or after class to make proper arrangements and secure the information needed regarding the tests, etc., that need to be completed.

3. In extenuating circumstances, when a student has been absent due toillness, accident, etc. for more than seven consecutive days, provisions may be made to extend the timeline for make-up work.

4. Students who fail to fulfill their responsibilities for make-up work will receive a “0” for the work, tests, etc. not completed.

*Students who are absent from class for excused reasons, including approved school activities, must be given the opportunity to make up all work and cannot

3

Page 4: NORTH STAR SCHOOL DISTRICThsnscougars.ss7.sharpschool.com/UserFiles/Servers/Serv…  · Web viewYou must submit a short (150-300 word) essay confirming what ways you have shown character,

be penalized academically for not being present in class, provided they complete all make-up work according to the above guidelines.

Students who participate in an approved school activity must check with their teachers to receive information concerning classroom work prior to participating in the activity.

Approved school activities include those listed on the daily bulletin, field trips, school programs, athletic events, etc. Visits to the guidance office, other teachers’ areas, are not legitimate reasons to be absent from a scheduled class unless previously approved by the scheduled classroom teacher.

Homework PolicyEach student has the responsibility to develop good work and study habits. The student in preparing the assignment should:

1. Make sure he/she understands the assignment – its purpose, when it is due, how it should be done.

2. Ask for further explanation if original directions are not completely understood prior to due date.

3. Arrange to make up missed assignments as required by the teachers.

4. Budget time for homework. Anticipate 90-120 minutes of cumulative homework daily. When study time is provided during the school day, the student should take advantage of it. Long-term assignments should be planned so they do not have to be done all at once. Honors or Advanced Placement courses may require additional time for assignments.

5. Analyze study habits and take advantage of available study aids.

6. Write homework in a neat and legible manner on appropriate paper.

Mid-Terms/Online GradesAt approximately the middle of each nine week grading period, a mid-term report will be generated from PowerSchool. On this day, students will be given their current percentage grade. The parents should contact the teacher or school counselor if they have questions or would like to schedule a conference. It is recommended that parents contact the teacher or make an appointment to meet with them if their child is failing. In this way the parent/guardian will

4

know specific causes of the deficiency and may be given suggestions for helping their child improve.

North Star parents have the opportunity to access student grades and lunch account balances through PowerSchool. To receive access to this information for your child, parents must come to the child’s school office where they will be given a user name and password.

Students in grades 9 -12 also have the opportunity to access their grades. Students are encouraged to use their PowerSchool access on a regular basis to help maintain their grades and follow up on any missing assignments.

Tutorial ProgramsTeachers will be available daily from the time of dismissal until 3:15 for tutoring with a prior appointment. This time can be used to review extra classroom assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to request an appointment; moreover it is the student’s responsibility to arrange transportation home after the tutoring session is complete. No student is permitted on school property if not under the supervision of a member of the District Staff.

Graduation Project (Ends with the class of 2016)In order to comply with the Pennsylvania state-mandated graduation project regulations, supported by Pennsylvania’s governor, the North Star School District requires each student to complete a graduation project in order to graduate. This project must go above and beyond the normal academic scope or current job. The objective is to showcase the student’s ability and be a benefit to others. This project must not financially benefit the student or the student’s family and cannot be completed during school hours.

The graduation project proposal will be submitted to the faculty graduation project committee for approval. Following approval, the student may then begin accumulating hours towards the project. The project should be presented during the spring of the student’s junior year, unless prior approval was given to present during the first nine-weeks of their senior year. After the spring of their junior year, a reduction of one letter grade will be incurred for each nine-weeks of their senior year that the project has not been presented. Therefore, failure to present prior to the fourth nine-week grading period will result in the loss of the privilege of participating in graduation ceremonies.

The student will receive a final grade for this project. The final grade will appear on the student’s report card and transcripts. Students not completing the graduation project will not receive a diploma.

No student is expected to incur a financial obligation to complete a project. Should the student elect to make a financial investment in the project, the student, parents, and/or guardian must assume that financial obligation.

Scheduling Scheduling for the following school year is done each spring. All students and parents will receive information on how to access an electronic copy of the Program of Studies for the North Star School District. Discussions of this curriculum guide will be conducted for all classes by the School Counselors and Principal. A parent/guardian night may be scheduled so that parents/guardians interested in general explanations of courses of study may hear them.

Schedule Changes

1. Students will be permitted to make adjustments in their course selections according to the timetable that accompanies the scheduling information. Changes in Honors or Advanced Placement classes should also follow the timetable.

2. All course selections will take place by completing a schedule change request form and/or requesting the counselor to schedule an appointment to discuss options.

3. Classes that the student specifically selects and fits in their schedule, WILL NOT be changed.

4. Deadlines to change schedules will be set yearly. Parents and students will receive notification.

AFTER THE DEADLINE, CHANGES WILL ONLY BE MADE FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS:

a) A computer scheduling error occurred.

b) A student failed a course, needs to repeat it, and the change did not occur. (Usually this change will automatically occur.)

c) A student desires to add an additional elective course in place of a Learning Period. (This will only be considered if the desired course is not full.)

Drop/Add PolicyAll students will receive a tentative schedule during the summer months. Students who desire to drop or add a course may do so following the deadlines

6

Page 7: NORTH STAR SCHOOL DISTRICThsnscougars.ss7.sharpschool.com/UserFiles/Servers/Serv…  · Web viewYou must submit a short (150-300 word) essay confirming what ways you have shown character,

outlined in the summer mailing. Additionally, once the deadlines pass or once school begins, students may drop/add courses only if:

a) There is an error in the schedule that affects graduation requirements or

b) Students would like to drop a Learning Period and take an elective class offered during that same period, provided the elective class is not closed due to enrollment capacity.

No schedule changes of any kind will be made after the first five days of a semester.

If a student drops a course after the first five days of a semester, he/she will receive a “WF” indicating withdrawal failure for the final grade. This grade will be included in calculating GPA and class rank.

A student may not drop a course if he/she is unable to maintain his/her enrollment with a minimum of 7.0 credits as a senior, 7.5 credits as a junior, 8.0 credit as a sophomore and 8.0 credits as a freshmen.

NCAA EligibilityThe NCAA is made up of three membership classifications that are known as Divisions I, II and III. Each division creates its own rules governing personnel, amateurism, recruiting, eligibility, benefits, financial aid, and playing and practice seasons – consistent with the overall governing principles of the Association. Every program must affiliate its core program with one of the three divisions.

A commitment to academics and student-athlete success in the classroom is a vital part of the NCAA’s mission to integrate athletics into the fabric of higher education. The NCAA pledges to help student-athletes achieve their academic goals as well as their athletics goals.

NCAA members schools create rules to ensure that the Association’s 430,000 student-athletes compete on equal footing. The membership has implemented policies to help student-athletes prepare for the rigors of college coursework and to progress toward graduation once they enroll.

Different divisions have different academic requirements, but the Association’s belief in student-athletes as students first is paramount. NCAA student-athletes annually outperform their student-body counterparts in graduation rates, and in almost all demographic categories.

Students who do not complete all course work at North Star High School may be in jeopardy of not having enough core courses to meet NCAA Clearinghouse requirements. This includes students attending Somerset County Technology Center, transfer students, etc. These students must notify the Guidance Department of their desire to participate in intercollegiate sports so that proper course work can be planned.

offense in addition to the described above if the occurrence was at school, on school grounds, or at a school function.

Code of EthicsIt is the duty of all concerned with school activities:

1. To emphasize the proper ideals of sportsmanship, respect, and ethical conduct.

2. To stress the values derived from good citizenship.3. To show cordial courtesy to fellow students, visitors, and others.4. To establish a positive relationship among participants.5. To encourage leadership, use of initiative, and good judgment

School Spirit and SportsmanshipSchool spirit and sportsmanship may be divided into the following three (3) categories:

1. Courtesy toward teachers, fellow students & officials of school athletic activities.

2. Pride in everything our school endeavors to accomplish and has accomplished.

Transportation

Busing ProcedureThe assignment of school bus stops will be the responsibility of the school district. If a secondary stop is needed, a change of transportation form must be completed.

School Bus Code of BehaviorPupils are encouraged to arrive at the bus stop on time, respect the property surrounding the bus stop, keep noise to a minimum, enter the bus in an orderly manner, cooperate with the bus driver (the driver is responsible for your safety) take care of the bus, and maintain order on the bus.

Any infraction of the rules or other behavior considered by the driver to be detrimental will be reported to the building principal in triplicate on forms provided by the school district for disciplinary action. After notifying the parents on the first offense, the principal may deny bus privileges for the student for a period no more than three (3) days for the second offense and for five (5) days on the third offense. A fourth violation will be sufficient to warrant suspension on bus privileges.

If a student is removed from the bus for disciplinary reasons, the parent will be responsible for transportation or for payment of van services. Suspension of school bus privileges does not relieve the parents of their responsibility as the compulsory attendance laws apply. Absence from school for the above reason would be considered as an inexcusable absence. It is the responsibility of the bus driver to report any infractions of the stated rules and guidelines for riding buses.Student Driver Procedure

1. Students must submit a completed Student Driving Pass Request form to the office.

2. Students must acquire and display the school parking permit.

5. Only licensed vehicles are permitted on school property.6. All traffic laws that apply while traveling in a school zone must be

obeyed.7. Violations of these rules will result in the suspension of privileges

and disciplinary action.

Attendance

* Extracurricular attendance information can be found in the Extracurricular Section.* Any student, 18 years or older, still needs parent/guardian permission to be excused from school.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania requires all children between the ages of 8 and 17 to attend school unless legally excused. Parents/Guardians are responsible for their child’s attendance at school. As part of their responsibility, parents/guardians are expected to provide the school with a written excuse for their child’s absence on the day the student returns but no later than the third school day following the absence. Parents/Guardians should contact the school if extenuating circumstances regarding a child’s absence exist.

Excused Absences1. Excused absences are prescribed by law in the Pennsylvania School

Code. The following reasons will be considered an excused absence from school (verification required):

a. A student’s illness or physical injury b. Death in the immediate familyc. Quarantined. Observance of a bona-fide religious holiday in accordance

with the student’s religious beliefse. Health care from a licensed practitioner when it is not

9. At 45 days of absence of any type, the student will be retained in the present grade level and loss of credit will result.

Tardy to SchoolWe would like to remind all parents/guardians and students about the importance of attending school and not being tardy. Research has shown there is a direct relation to punctuality and success in school. A student who arrives tardy is missing valuable instructional time in addition to causing a disruption to the learning environment of fellow students. We encourage parents to take seriously their obligation and responsibility to get their child to school in a timely manner. Please make a concerted effort to schedule all appointments after the academic day. The building is open to students at 7:25 a.m. each morning. Students are not to arrive before this time because there is no one to supervise them. We encourage parents/guardians to do their part by simply making sure their child is in his/her first period class by 7:53 a.m. each morning. Students will be marked late after the 7:53 a.m. bell. Special allowances will occur if buses are not here on time.

Being on time to school and class is optimum for teaching and learning. School bus transportation is provided free of charge to students of the North Star School District. For this reason, tardies related to car problems, oversleeping, etc. are not valid reasons for tardiness. To receive an excused tardy when late to school, the student must have either: (A) a doctor’s excuse (B) an official court notice (C) a parent note, including the information needed for an excused absence.

Consequences for unexcused tardies to school (per school year):1st offense = warning2nd offense = warning3rd offense = warning and parent/guardian notification4th - 9th offense = Wednesday detention each time10th - 14th offense = Saturday detention each time15th offense and above = OSS each time (at discretion of principal/designee)

* Excessive tardiness can lead to alternative education placement and/or expulsion.* A student driver who is habitually tardy (unexcused) to school will have his/her parking privileges revoked.

Tardy to Class (Other Than First Period)A student is tardy when he enters an assigned classroom after the bell has rung and he has no written excuse from a school official. A tardy of 6 minutes or more will be considered a class cut (see next section).

Class CutA class cut occurs when a student fails to attend a scheduled class or when a student is 6minutes or more tardy for a class.

Consequences for class cuts (per class per school year):1st offense = Wednesday detention and “0” for all missed class work; parent/guardian notification2nd offense = Saturday detention and “0” for all missed class work; parent/guardian notification3rd offense = Saturday detention and “0” for the course (student will be reassigned to resource/study during that period); parent/guardian notification

Students who leave school without permission or who are truant will be assigned two Saturday detentions. Additionally, their absence will be recorded as unexcused, and their individual classes will be given a class cut.

Early DismissalsEarly dismissals from school are considered absence from school and will follow the same guidelines for classification of excused/unexcused. Students are responsible for making up all missed work in a timely fashion while being dismissed from school for excused reasons.

If a student wishes to be dismissed early from school, he/she is required to submit to the main office a written statement, signed by a parent/guardian that contains the following: (Request forms may be obtained in the main office).

a. Student’s name (first/last)b. Day, date, and time for dismissalc. Reason for early dismissal; if medical appointment, name of doctor

and time of appointment must be includedd. Parent/Guardian signaturee. Phone number where parent/guardian may be contacted during the

day No early dismissal will be granted without a parent/guardian available unless verification via phone has been given along with the written notification.

Access to School FacilitiesAt the end of the school day, students are expected to leave the building by 3:00 p.m. unless properly supervised. Students may have access to school facilities only when properly supervised.

Textbooks/MaterialsTextbooks and certain materials are furnished to your child by the school system on a loan basis and should be treated as borrowed property. Students must pay for loss of or damage to such textbooks and materials.

LockersStudents are assigned a locker to use for the school year. Textbooks and other materials should be stored in a student’s assigned locker only, not another student’s locker or an unassigned locker. Students are permitted to use locks as long as a key or combination is supplied to the office.

Agendas Students are not permitted in the hallways during class periods unless they have their agenda signed by the classroom teacher. No student is permitted to run in the halls. Students caught in the hallway without a signed agenda may earn a discipline consequence. Replacement agendas may be purchased in the office for $5.00.

Check PolicyA fee of $50.00 will be assessed for the issuance of a non-sufficient fund check to any fund of the North Star School District.

Cafeteria ProceduresThe North Star School District maintains a closed lunch period. No fast food may be brought into the school for lunch, and students may not leave the school grounds for lunch.

All students are assigned a PIN number and corresponding lunch account. Students may deposit money in their account during the pre-homeroom period upon arrival to the high school from 7:25am to 7:53am or funds may be deposited via US mail clearly identifying the student and their PIN/Student number. At the high school there will be no negative balances. Therefore, the following procedure will be employed:

All students must have a positive balance to charge any meal, drink, or a la carte item.

All students receiving FREE lunches will need a positive balance to purchase extra or a la carte items.

19

Page 20: NORTH STAR SCHOOL DISTRICThsnscougars.ss7.sharpschool.com/UserFiles/Servers/Serv…  · Web viewYou must submit a short (150-300 word) essay confirming what ways you have shown character,

In the event a daily purchase causes the account to go into the negative THAT PURCHASE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.

Example: Student “A” approaches the cashier with a full meal and has 40 cents in his/her account. Lunch for this student is the full price of $1.55. This purchase takes the account into the negative $1.15 cents; therefore, this purchase would not be permitted, and the student would receive an equitable nutritious substitute at the expense of our Food Service Department.

We will allow (provide the equitable nutritious substitute) this to occur 2 times per school year; after that, we will not permit the student to purchase a meal until there is a positive amount in his/her account to make the purchase.

PLEASE keep your student’s account in the positive and replenished.

Medication at SchoolMost student medications can be taken at home either before/after school; this includes most antibiotics. If a physician deems it medically necessary for a student to take medication at school (prescription/non-prescription) during the school day, a Medical Permission Form must be completed. These forms are available in the building nurse’s office or main office. This form must be completed by a physician and signed by the parent/guardian before the medication can be administered at school. No exceptions will be made. A new form must be filled out if there is a change in the medication, dosage, or time to be taken as well as for the new school year. It is the responsibility of the child to report to the nurse’s office for his/her medication. It is the obligation of the parent to deliver the medication to the school. Please do not send the medication to school with your child as this can lead to the medication being misused, lost, or stolen.

School SurveillanceThe building is under video surveillance at all times and that surveillance can and will be used during investigations or prosecutions.

Disciplinary Structure

Level ILevel I misconduct involves minor misbehavior on the part of the student which impedes orderly classroom procedure or interferes with the orderly operation of the school and/or school-sponsored activities.

These behaviors are to be handled by the individual staff member; however, such misbehavior may be indicative of a problem that should be referred to appropriate support staff. An accurate record for the offense, intervention, and disciplinary action must be maintained by the staff member. Reoccurrence of the misbehavior may require a referral to the administration for further intervention and disciplinary action.

Examples of Level I Offenses

Classroom disruption (minor) InsubordinationClassroom tardiness PDA (see below)Disrespectful language or gesture (minor)

Unauthorized use of electronic device (see below)

Hallway disruption (minor) Food/Beverage infraction (see below)Cheating Purse infraction (see below)

Listed below are possible consequences for Level I offenses: Verbal reprimand Student conference Special assignment Behavioral contract Conference with student/teacher/counselor Conference with parent/student/teacher Teacher assigned and monitored detention Confiscation of device by staff member and submission to office

After the above disciplinary options have been exhausted, the discipline may proceed to Level II.

Public Displays of Affection (PDA)Public displays of affection such as hand-holding and kissing are considered inappropriate while students are under the school’s supervision.

Electronic DevicesCell phones, MP3 players, and other electronic devices are only to be used in the school building between 7:53 AM and 2:44 PM for educational purposes or with staff’s permission. Violators will have their device confiscated and returned at the end of the period. A second offense will result in the holding of the confiscated item until the end of the school day. (Devices are permitted to be used at lunch and between periods).

Reasonable ForceEven when a parent or local school board prohibits corporal punishment, reasonable force may be used by teachers and school authorities in the following situations:

To quell a disturbance To obtain possession of weapons or other dangerous objects For the purpose of self-defense For the protection of persons or property

School authorities shall notify all parents/guardians of this policy.

Searches1. School authorities may search a student’s locker and seize any

illegal materials without the presence of the student. Such materials may be used against the student in disciplinary, juvenile, or criminal proceedings. When a student’s locker is being searched, it is suggested that the student and an adult witness shall be notified, and the student will be given the opportunity to be present.

2. The courts have upheld the claim that the school lockers are school property, loaned or rented to the students for the students’ convenience. Students shall not expect privacy regarding items placed in school lockers. School property is subject to search at any time by school officials, and random, periodic or sweeping searches of all lockers will occur. School authorities may search the student’s locker without prior warning in seeking contraband because, standing in loco parentis, school authorities are charged with the safety of all students under their care and supervision. Such a search is not an illegal search but a reasonable exercise of board power in the interest of the health, welfare, and safety of all school students.

Police Authority in SchoolPolice have the authority to interview a child in school if the parents/guardians of the student involved have been notified of the police request, explained the situation, informed that they may be present at interview, and asked permission for the interview to take place. If the parents/guardians cannot be reached, no interview will be permitted. Students and parents can request the principal/designee to be present at the police interview.

Student RightsStudents have the right to express themselves in any matter unless such expression directly interferes with the educational process, threatens harm to the school or community, encourages unlawful activity, or interferes with another individual’s rights.

Students have the responsibility to obey the laws governing libel and obscenity and to be aware of others and to give them a fair opportunity to express their views.

Flag Salute and the Pledge of Allegiance: It is the responsibility of every citizen to show proper respect for his/her country and its flag. However, students may decline to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and may refrain from saluting the flag on the basis of personal belief or religious convictions.
