PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEby Susan Bloyer

Dear North Star Lily Society Members,

It’s an exciting time of year for me. My lilies and other plants arepeaking thru the ground and there are signs of life in the test tubes fromour March 30th embryo rescue program. In addition, I am taking over thereins of our lily society. If I wasn’t busy before I am now.

A few things to note about me.

I first fell in love with Oriental lilies, though I had trouble growing them.No wonder! I have a lot of shade and they just don’t like that. I’vefound a few places to grow them, but the problem introduced me to mylatest obsession: martagon lilies. I have several varieties. It’s just toobad that I’m terrible at promptly marking what variety is located where.

So, when I have seeds from Mother Nature pollinating them, I have NOidea what I will end up with. I’m beginning to start them indoors to increase the chance I will see somethingeventually.

I’d like to talk to you today, though, about increasing our membership’s attendance at our programs and meetings.Eventually, we would like to encourage you to take on leadership roles. I would like to know generally* Why did you join?* Is there something that we can do to make it easier to participate?

As our membership changes, I would like us to meet your changing needs. If you are so inclined, please leave amessage on my home phone (in case I’m not there) and leave your thoughts at 952-926-7351.

I hope to see you at a future meeting or event!

Showing Lilies - Learn How to Prep Lilies for a ShowBy Forrest Peiper

Judith Freeman’s visit to us at North Star Lily Society was trulyamazing. I was so pleased that we had 35 people at the tissue cultureclass! Judith was in in her element, sharing her skill and enthusiasmwith us all. We had 65 people at the afternoon session aboutOrienpets. Twenty of us went out to eat with Judith at the end ofthe day.

Something new that I learned was that Judith not only producedmany new garden lilies for the market, but she also developed andrefined the methods of tissue culture for Oriental Trumpets. I wentback through the Spring 2018 Lily Garden Catalogue and found 14Asiatics, 8 trumpets and 16 orienpets that Judith has developed -lilies that many of us have and love.

An especially intriguing story that Judith shared with us was about the lily ‘Miss Libby’. Judith worked witha woman named Sharon for many years at the Lily Garden. Her daughter, Libby got lymphoma while in highschool and went through chemo. The lymphoma returned 4 years later and she had to repeat the chemo. Shehas now been cancer free for 18 years. About the time of Libby’s wedding, Judith named a lily ‘Miss Libby’after the woman who had been through so much. A trellis for Libby’s wedding was decorated with ‘Miss Libby’flowers. Libby is a tireless fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Judith wanted to make an ongoing giftto the American Cancer Society in Libby’s name, so every dollar (not just the profits) received by the LilyGarden for ‘Miss Libby’ bulbs goes to the American Cancer Society.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but now, after my 3rd class on tissue culture, I have all my supplies gatheredand am prepared to give it a go. My Dad and my husband cut my box out for me, I visited Axman in person, andPhytotech and Amazon on line. I am ready!! Thank you, Judith for helping to fulfill my dream of doing tissueculture.

The fourth annual NSLS Hybridizing Workshop will be held as before at the NSLS Hybridizers’ Garden inArneson Acres in Edina. Forrest Peiper will lead the workshop. Participation is open to NSLS membersonly and is limited to 12 participants. There is no cost for participation and materials will be providedby NSLS.

The workshop is informal and only an interest in the subject is required. The session will begin with ashort discussion on hybridization – Why and how? Participants will then choose among severalMinnesota hybrids for their hybrid crosses and will make and document the crosses themselves. In thefall, seed pods from these crosses will be gathered and given to the participants for growing or, ifdesired, grown for them. On the average, these seeds will require two years to flower.

Before July 1, Forrest will communicate with workshop members regarding any preparation for thesession.

When: July 1, 2019 6:00 - 8:00 pmWhere: Lily Garden, Arneson Acres, EdinaContact: Forrest Peiper ([email protected] or (952) 541-7800 with questions or to reserve yourspot.

Make Your Own Lilies - Hybridizing Lilies WorkshopBy Forrest Peiper

Art in Bloom - by Kathryn Malody

For several years, Denese Erickson, Phyllis Andrews and Kathryn Malodyhave taken turns representing the North Star Lily Society at the MIA’s Art InBloom. Set up day came as a late season winter storm was descendingupon the Twin Cities. Nevertheless, spirits were bright and spring was in fullbloom inside the MIA.

This year was Denese’s turn to represent the Lily Society. Denese chose towork with the large candlestick holders in gallery 303. The lily buds andblossoms resembled the candles and the crown and other ornamentation.Working with lilies in an art museum always takes special care. The pollen isespecially sticky and can damage the artwork so we are always diligent toremove anthers as soon as they are visible. The results are well worth theattention to such details. Denese’s lily design commanded the gallery!

Recently I had communication between Mr. Duncan Donald, Royal Horticultural Society'sRegistrar, about another matter. Included in Mr. Donald's response was his concern that sofew Lilium seedlings from the USA and Canada had been registered between September2012 and August 2014. He urged us to exert and encourage growers to register their lilies.

The Summary of Registrations per country speak volumes: The Netherlands had 152,Russia 71, China 47, Canada 15, Australia 7, Germany 7, USA 7, Czech Republic 4, UK 2,Korea 1, Latvia 1, and New Zealand 1.

Set a personal goal after reading this to grow your lilies of hybridizing worth, and plan toregister lily seedlings with the Royal Horticultural Society. Lilium registration forms arefound on the RHS website and there’s no charge to register. For seedlings that you'regrowing and are not your own, request permission from the hybridizer, if possible. Inreturn you'll receive a pretty classy and distinguished looking certificate for each lilyregistered. It really is a painless process. Contact Mr. Duncan Donald with your questions.Download the form from the website (included below) making a few extra for each lilyseedling and use one to collect asked-for data.
