Synopsis of Scenes

“The Bare Necessities”

“Look for the bare necessities,

the simple bare necessities;

forget about your worries and your strife.

I mean the bare necessities,

Old Mother Nature’s recipes

that bring the bare necessities of life!

Wherever I wander, wherever I roam,

I couldn’t be fonder of my big home.

The bees are buzzin’ in the tree

to make some honey just for me.

When you look under the rocks and plants

and take a glance at the fancy ants,

then maybe try a few.

The bare necessities of life will come to you.”

University of Denver, and has directed more than 100 productions across the

country. Greg has appeared in ! ve national commercials, appeared brie" y

on Broadway, and acts and directs locally. Beginning in August, Greg begins

a new role as he takes over as Artistic Director at the Waterloo Community

Playhouse. Greg enjoys playing the banjo. This is his ! fth North Star show.

Chad Hackenmiller (King Louie) Chad resides in Waterloo and has worked

at North Star for four years, and also works part-time at Casey’s. He has

numerous theatre credits and relates that one of his favorite roles was as Mr.

Green in last fall’s Oster Regent production of “Clue.” Chad enjoys 80’s music

and old classic movies and says that he met Jesus (Ted Neeley) and Pontius

Pilate (Barry Dennen) from the 1973 movie, “Jesus Christ Superstar.” This is

Chad’s fourth appearance in a North Star production.

Tristan Holt (Mowgli) Making his North Star debut, Tristan lives in Cedar

Falls, graduated from Northern University High School and is currently

attending Hawkeye Community College. A life-long actor, he has appeared

in numerous plays, several high school shows, and a few commercials, too!

Tristan is a Minnesota Vikings fan, enjoys ! shing and being outdoors. He has

two wonderful dogs, Tarah and Isabella.

Chelsey Linza (Baloo) In 2011, Ms. Linza volunteered to play Veruca Salt in

“Willy Wonka,” and states she “fell in love with the participants, and North

Star, as an organization.” So much so, that she has worked for North Star

as a Day Hab Specialist for four years! Chelsey lives in Waterloo and enjoys

photography. She would like to say, “Thanks to Ethan and Darlene for their

love and support.” This is Chelsey’s third North Star credit.

Brian John McCarty (Bagheera) Mr. McCarty lives in Waterloo with his wife,

Rebecca. He studied Theatre and Vocal Music Performance at the University

of Northern Iowa , and is a property manager for Covington Properties. Brian

is a veteran stage performer with both amateur and professional theatre

credits. He relates that his favorite credit to date was last summer’s WCP

production of Les Misérables in which he portrayed Jean Valjean. This is

Brian’s ! rst appearance in a North Star show.

Japhy Holt (Maȳura the Peacock) Miss Holt ! rst appeared as Toto in North

Star’s Wizard of Oz at the age of 6 (half a lifetime for her). Since that time

she played a squirrel in Willie Wonka, and a dancing snail in Peter Pan. Japhy

appeared as Junie B. Jones in a Black Hawk Children’s Theatre production. A

student at Holmes Jr. High, she loves dancing and cheerleading.

Director’s Notes

The story of Mowgli’s adventures in an Indian jungle were written by

Rudyard Kipling 111 years ago. Kipling was born in India, educated

in London, and was living in Vermont at the time he wrote “The Jungle

Book.” The short stories rst appeared in magazines, thrilling its readers.

Adaptations of “The Jungle Book” have been made into at least

nine movies, two TV shows and two video games. The most popular

adaptation, and the one most of us identify with, is Disney’s animated

movie from 1967. Far from Disney’s best animation (many stock

backdrops were used, rather than individually hand-painted cells), and

considerably lighter in tone than Kipling’s original work, the characters

and songs proved to be a huge hit. For rst time an all-star cast of voices

were employed for an animated lm. Phil Harris and Sebastian Cabot

brought the fun-loving Baloo and wise Bagheera to life. While George

Sanders deep voice lent frightening sophistication to the role of Shere

Khan, and Louie Prima’s big band style dazzled us as King Louie.

North Star is itself a delightful jungle, and we’ve had a marvelous time

singing and dancing as animals of all shapes and sizes. We hope to

recapture a bit of Kipling’s drama, and a dash of Disney’s magic; while at

the same time adding our own unique avor to this adventure. Thanks so

much for traveling with us!
