The last two times North and Westlake hooked up

on the football field the game was decided on

the final play as time expired.

On Aug. 26, that certainly was not the case.

The Rangers made sure of it.

“The offensive line and our running backs really

North will play its second consecutive road

game to start the 2017 season when the Rangers

travel to Richfield to take on Revere in Week 2.

North is coming off an impressive 47-16 win over

Westlake while the Minutemen are looking to

rebound after losing to Buckeye, 24-10, in Week

1.

Revere lost several starters to graduation as they

prepare for their fifth season with

coach Mike Murphey. Toledo commit and

senior guard Conor Head will be a key to the

success of Revere’s offense and protecting

senior quarterback Eric Lazbin. Defensive

lineman Nolan Printy and linebacker

Hunter Bonfiglio return for their final season

providing leadership on defense. Revere is

looking for its first playoff berth since 2005.

The Rangers used a punishing run game to get

by Westlake. Brett Payne and Chase Valletto

each rushed for more than 100 yards in the win.

Jake Tanski and Taylor Valletto also accounted

for three touchdowns combined for North.

Revere was dominated by Buckeye in Week 1 in

most statistical categories. Buckeye outgained

Revere, 349-210, and had a 17-8 edge in first

downs. The Minutemen will have to be better

against a confident North offense playing

behind a physical offensive line and coming into

the game with a ton of momentum.

Buckeye QB Adam Fauver rushed 22 times for 64 yards

and completed 8-of-10 passes for 147 yards to lead

the Bucks to a 24-10 non-league win over Revere in the

season opener for both teams.

With Fauver directing the offense, Buckeye outgained

Revere 349-210 and had a 17-8 edge in first downs. The

disparity was much greater after the first half, which

ended with the Bucks leading 24-3 and holding a 277-

94 advantage in yards total offense and a 13-3 edge

in first downs.

Gage Williams had two sacks and Isaiah Williams had

one, Evan Tesar had an interception, Austin Bir and

Schulz had key tackles for loss and Pat Caniglia broke

up a pass in the end zone on fourth-and-7 from the

Buckeye 13.

Revere’s only touchdown came on a 1-yard run by

Matt Buser (16 rushes for 76 yards, 6 receptions for 94)

with 10.2 seconds to go and a lot of Buckeye second-

teamers on the field.

Shawn Dodd didn’t need

directions to get to

Stevens Boulevard when

he was approved as the

next coach of the North

Rangers in March 2015.

He didn’t need to be led

down the hallways to the

football office or the

weight room. And he

definitely didn’t need much persuading either to

take over the football program at his alma mater.

Dodd, who was a standout wide receiver for the

Rangers during his playing days from 1987-1990,

was approved as the head football coach at North

in early March 2015.

“Being an alumni, still living in the community, this

was the right move for me and my family,” said

Dodd, a 1991 graduate of North. “How many guys

get a chance to go home to coach their alma

mater? I can’t wait. I couldn’t be more excited

about a job. And we are going to be successful

here, I believe that, I don’t just hope it happens

eventually.”

Dodd begins his second season at North after a

four-year stint at Gilmour, where he led the Lancers

to back-to-back 8-2 seasons and Division V playoff

berths.

Dodd is adding some stability to a Rangers

program that has three coaches in as many years

following Mike Bell and another former North grad –

George Burich.

Dodd indicated he’s in this for the long haul.

Dodd remembers being part of the Rangers’

football team that broke a 33-game losing streak

during his junior year in a 1989 game at Brush, then

going 4-6 as a senior in the fall of 1990 – including a

41-20 rout of rival South in Week 10.

A year later, under then-coach Dan Kukura, the

Rangers went 8-2.

“North is the only place I would ever have taken a

phone call from, and the response from other North

grads and guys I went to school with and played

football with has been overwhelming,” Dodd said.

Dodd, a long-time sixth grade social studies

teacher at Euclid, is now an English / Language

Arts teacher at Willoughby Middle School.

Dodd is a father of three and is married to Kim

Shumar-Dodd. They live in Willowick.

The stadium is named after Nick Carter, the head football coach for the Rangers and North’s athletic director from 1959-1977. The stadium was formally dedicated to Carter prior to the start of the 1978 season. Carter was one of the original North High Athletic Hall of Fame inductees in 2007. Nick Carter Stadium was built in 1959 and originally, the stadium was home to both the North Rangers and the South Rebels - until 1963 when South built its own facility. Nick Carter Stadium is home to the North Rangers football teams, the North boys and girls soccer squads and boys and girls track teams at the school. The stadium seats 5,500 and the surface is artificial turf. The annual Ranger Relays are run at Nick Carter Stadium each spring, one of the marquee track and field events in Northeast Ohio.

STADIUM RENOVATIONS, TURF ENHANCE RANGERS' HOME

North coach Shawn Dodd is eagerly anticipating the 2017 season. When a coach has a team with the

Rangers’ personality and work ethic, that type of excitement is understandable.

“This is just a great group of guys that are fun to be around and I hope that translates to their play on the

field because they deserve success,” Dodd said. “Our weight room was full this entire offseason and we

have guys that look the part physically. And I know they won’t back down. Now we just have to go out

and prove it on Friday night.”

The offense starts with QB Jake Tanski, who accounted for almost 2,000 total yards and 19 total TDs in

2016. Tanski will have weapons to go to with running back Chase Valletto and Nate Rummel and Kenny

Streb catching the ball. Dodd expects big things from his offensive line as well – a physically strong unit.

Defensively, North changed its scheme a little from a year ago to a four-man front and graduated

several key players. Lou Severino and Brad Burrows are expected to make a major impact for the

Rangers on defense.

Brett Payne and Devin Kleinhenz are experienced leaders. Tyler Dodd is a versatile athlete who will be

called on to make plays on both sides of the ball.

North opens with road games at Westlake and at Revere before coming home for the first time in Week

3 to host Maple Heights. The WRC schedule has changed dramatically from a year ago and now the

Rangers will open league play vs. Kenston and then play rival South in Week 5. North has maybe the

toughest closing schedule in the WRC with Mayfield, Madison and defending champ Chardon to end

October and the regular season.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association

released its final football computer ratings of the

season on Sunday, Nov. 1. The weekly computer

ratings are released every Tuesday afternoon

beginning after the fourth week of the season.

After a bond issue passed in November of 2015, the Willoughby-Eastlake School District began

looking at plans for new bleachers, a press box and field turf at Nick Carter Stadium in Eastlake.

The renovations began this past May and today the North Rangers have one of the nicest and most

modern facilities and home fields in the area. The home bleachers were replaced with a new

structure along with a new press box.

The natural grass field was replaced with a new turf surface. The track around the field has also been

resurfaced and upgrades to the bathrooms under the bleachers were done as well.

“It’s a great thing not just for our program, for the whole school and the entire community,” North

coach Shawn Dodd said. “It is a sense of pride to go out and practice and play in such a fantastic

new stadium. Our guys are very grateful and excited.”

North AD Dennis Reilly said any Rangers teams that need a dry surface will be welcome on the turf

for practice, such as spring sports like baseball and softball. In addition, football, soccer and the

marching band have all utilized the turf this summer while many of the grass fields are taken away by

construction. Youth leagues and the middle schools will be able to utilize the turf when scheduling

allows.

“It’s an unbelievable experience. It’s like a whole new place,” Reilly said. “Everybody has been really

positive. It’s a beautiful facility.”

Saturday, Aug. 19 the new turf was christened and the stadium officially opened as boys soccer got

a win over Cleveland Heights. The first varsity football game at the newly renovated Nick Carter

Stadium will take place Sept. 8 vs. Maple Heights.
