a winterland of wonderThey write songs about this stuff – snow, sleighs, meadows, skating, skiing and evenings in the company of friends and fireplaces. They’re called holiday songs. And when you find yourself at North Lake Tahoe, you’ll swear there’s a holiday album constantly playing in your mind.

Resort at Squaw Creek celebrations kick off with its Gingerbread Village and Grand Tree Lighting Ceremony, featuring gold medalist Peggy Fleming. The Village at Northstar’s “Noel Nights” serves up free s’mores, hot chocolate, free skating, carolers and visits from Santa, while Tahoe City’s “Family Winter Wonderland” celebrates with a Town Tree Lighting and lakeside photos with Santa, who glides into Granlibakken Resort not once, but twice this holiday season. Kings Beach’s Holiday Fair and Tree Lighting are set for December 5, while the man in red appears at Diamond Peak December 23-25.

In addition, you’ll find storytelling sessions, snowman-making competitions, craft fairs, New Year’s celebrations and an air alive with music at all points on the compass at North Lake Tahoe – the perfect setting for making spirits bright.

things that go bump in the nightAll things exciting under a North Tahoe sun are simply foreplay to an après scene that never ceases to amaze, burns long into the night, and runs on guitar riffs, drum beats, and live music that make places like the Crystal Bay Club and Tahoe Biltmore legendary. You’ll find bars, lounges and entertainment scenes ranging from intimate to elaborate. Same goes for cafés and restaurants whose fare runs from quick and simple to four stars.

Somewhere (more likely anywhere up here), you’ll find that place with the ambience, attitude or menu that’s “just right.” And that special spot is likely just a few minutes from the base lodge or your Tahoe hangout. Newcomers are many, including Tahoe City’s Fat Cat Café, Corkscrews Wine & Cheese Bar and Thai Kitchen, Truckee’s FIftyFifty Brewery, Squaw Valley’s Cornice Cantina and Soupa, Incline Village’s Bite, and Baxter’s Bistro at Northstar.

Classic dining favorites include Gar Woods Grill, Moody’s Bistro and Lounge, and the Hyatt Regency’s Lone Eagle Grille. Rule of thumb at North Tahoe: when the sun sets, things are only just beginning to heat up.

deals AS LOVELY AS THE LAkE ITSELFDoes North Lake Tahoe become even more beautiful when value is added to the picture? We think so. With our Cool Deals, you’ll find values as jaw-dropping as nature itself.

Most of our dozen ski resorts offer a variety of discounts. Join Alpine Meadows Ski Resort’s “Alpine Club” for $15 and you’ll save big on lift tickets, equipment, lessons, food and drink. Squaw Valley’s Frequent Skier Program has a deal that allow kids 12 and under to ski for just $10 any day and a plan that rewards your purchase of four tickets with a fifth day of free skiing. Groups of ten or more ski Diamond Peak for as little as $33 a day, while Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe serves up daily discounts, and on weekdays Sugar Bowl offers free basic rentals and free two-hour group lessons to those aged 13-69. With Northstar’s any day Six-Pack Lift Ticket, you can save up to 30 percent.

Those deals are scarcely the tip of the iceberg. And a great time to enjoy those deals is December 12-13, during our 10th annual Learn To Ski

and Board Weekend. For $25, get beginner tickets, group lesson and gear rental. Details at GoTahoeNorth.com/CoolDeals.
